Luke 20:41-44

⁴¹Jesus asked, “Why do people say that the Messiah will be the son of King David?^[a] ⁴²^(A) In the book of Psalms, David himself says,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right side^[b]
⁴³until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you.’

⁴⁴David spoke of the Messiah as his Lord, so how can the Messiah be his son?”

⁴¹Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?^(B) ⁴²David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
⁴³until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’^[a]^(C)

⁴⁴David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
