The Resurrection

20 (A)Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that (B)the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, (C)the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and (D)we do not know where they have laid him.” (E)So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw (F)the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and (G)the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'[a] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, (H)who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet (I)they did not understand the Scripture, (J)that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And (K)she saw (L)two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, (M)“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, (N)“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and (O)saw Jesus standing, (P)but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, (Q)“Woman, why are you weeping? (R)Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be (S)the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[b] (T)“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (U)my brothers and say to them, (V)‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to (W)my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene (X)went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 (Y)On the evening (Z)of that day, the first day of the week, (AA)the doors being locked where the disciples were (AB)for fear of the Jews,[c] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, (AC)“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, (AD)he showed them his hands and his side. Then (AE)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As (AF)the Father has sent me, (AG)even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he (AH)breathed on them and said to them, (AI)“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (AJ)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

24 Now (AK)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[d] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, (AL)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. (AM)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, (AN)“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, (AO)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, (AP)“My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? (AQ)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

30 (AR)Now Jesus did many other signs (AS)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (AT)but these are written so that you may (AU)believe that Jesus is the Christ, (AV)the Son of God, and that by believing (AW)you may have life (AX)in his name.

Great Is the Lord

[a] A Song of Praise. Of David.

145 (A)I will extol you, my God and (B)King,
    and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
    (C)and praise your name forever and ever.
(D)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his (E)greatness is unsearchable.

(F)One generation shall commend your works to another,
    and shall declare your mighty acts.
On (G)the glorious splendor of your majesty,
    and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of (H)the might of your awesome deeds,
    and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your (I)abundant goodness
    and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is (J)gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is (K)good to all,
    and his mercy is over all that he has made.

10 (L)All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
    and all your (M)saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
    and tell of your power,
12 to (N)make known to the children of man your[b] (O)mighty deeds,
    and (P)the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 (Q)Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[The Lord is faithful in all his words
    and kind in all his works.][c]
14 The Lord (R)upholds all who are falling
    and (S)raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all (T)look to you,
    and you give them their food in due season.
16 You (U)open your hand;
    you (V)satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is (W)righteous in all his ways
    and (X)kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is (Y)near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him (Z)in truth.
19 He (AA)fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
    he also (AB)hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord (AC)preserves all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
    and (AD)let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

Put Not Your Trust in Princes

146 (AE)Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord (AF)as long as I live;
    (AG)I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

(AH)Put not your trust in princes,
    (AI)in a son of man, in whom there is (AJ)no salvation.
When (AK)his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.

(AL)Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose (AM)hope is in the Lord his God,
(AN)who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
(AO)who keeps faith forever;
    (AP)who executes justice for the oppressed,
    (AQ)who gives food to the hungry.

(AR)The Lord sets the prisoners free;
    (AS)the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
(AT)The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    (AU)the Lord loves the righteous.
(AV)The Lord watches over the sojourners;
    (AW)he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
    but (AX)the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 (AY)The Lord will reign forever,
    your God, O Zion, to all generations.
(AZ)Praise the Lord!

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147 (BA)Praise the Lord!
For (BB)it is good to sing praises to our God;
    for (BC)it is pleasant,[d] and (BD)a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord (BE)builds up Jerusalem;
    he (BF)gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals (BG)the brokenhearted
    and (BH)binds up their wounds.
He (BI)determines the number of the stars;
    he (BJ)gives to all of them their names.
(BK)Great is our Lord, and (BL)abundant in power;
    (BM)his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord (BN)lifts up the humble;[e]
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

(BO)Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on (BP)the lyre!
He covers the heavens with clouds;
    he prepares (BQ)rain for the earth;
    he makes (BR)grass grow on the hills.
He (BS)gives to the beasts their food,
    and to (BT)the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in (BU)the strength of the horse,
    nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord (BV)takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who (BW)hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
    Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens (BX)the bars of your gates;
    he blesses your children within you.
14 He (BY)makes peace in your borders;
    he (BZ)fills you with the (CA)finest of the wheat.
15 He (CB)sends out his command to the earth;
    his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives (CC)snow like wool;
    he scatters (CD)frost like ashes.
17 He hurls down his crystals of (CE)ice like crumbs;
    who can stand before his (CF)cold?
18 He (CG)sends out his word, and melts them;
    he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
    his (CH)statutes and rules[f] to Israel.
20 He (CI)has not dealt thus with any other nation;
    they do not know his rules.[g]
(CJ)Praise the Lord!
