Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 (A)On the evening (B)of that day, the first day of the week, (C)the doors being locked where the disciples were (D)for fear of the Jews,[a] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, (E)“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, (F)he showed them his hands and his side. Then (G)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As (H)the Father has sent me, (I)even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he (J)breathed on them and said to them, (K)“Receive the Holy Spirit.

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, (A)will you at this time (B)restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, (C)“It is not for you to know (D)times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive (E)power (F)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and (G)you will be (H)my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and (I)Samaria, and (J)to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, (K)he was lifted up, and (L)a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, (M)two (N)men stood by them in (O)white robes, 11 and said, (P)“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (Q)will (R)come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (A)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like (B)a mighty rushing wind, and (C)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues (D)as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. And they were all (E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (F)to speak in other tongues (G)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (H)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (I)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (J)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and (K)Medes and (L)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and (M)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And (N)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
