⁵ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;^(A) apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.^{(B) 7} If you remain in me^(C) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.^(D)

¹⁰ If you keep my commands,^(A) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

³¹ To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,^(A) you are really my disciples. ³² Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”^(B)

³³ They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants^(C) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

³⁴ Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.^(A)

⁵⁶ Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.^(A)

⁶ Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.^(A)

³⁹ She had a sister called Mary,^(A) who sat at the Lord’s feet^(B) listening to what he said. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care^(C) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

⁴¹ “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried^(D) and upset about many things, ⁴² but few things are needed—or indeed only one.^[a](E) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

²⁶ and whoever lives by believing^(A) in me will never die.^(B) Do you believe this?”

²⁰ But you have an anointing^(A) from the Holy One,^(B) and all of you know the truth.^[a](C)
