31 “O generation, see the word of the Lord!
Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
Or a land of darkness?
Why do My people say, ‘We [a]are lords;
(A)We will come no more to You’?
32 Can a virgin forget her ornaments,
Or a bride her attire?
Yet My people (B)have forgotten Me days without number.

33 “Why do you beautify your way to seek love?
Therefore you have also taught
The wicked women your ways.
34 Also on your skirts is found
(C)The blood of the lives of the poor innocents.
I have not found it by [b]secret search,
But plainly on all these things.
35 (D)Yet you say, ‘Because I am innocent,
Surely His anger shall turn from me.’
Behold, (E)I will plead My case against you,
(F)Because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’
36 (G)Why do you gad about so much to change your way?
Also (H)you shall be ashamed of Egypt (I)as you were ashamed of Assyria.
37 Indeed you will go forth from him
With your hands on (J)your head;
For the Lord has rejected your trusted allies,
And you will (K)not prosper by them.

Israel Is Shameless

“They say, ‘If a man divorces his wife,
And she goes from him
And becomes another man’s,
(L)May he return to her again?’
Would not that (M)land be greatly polluted?
But you have (N)played the harlot with many lovers;
(O)Yet return to Me,” says the Lord.

“Lift up your eyes to (P)the desolate heights and see:
Where have you not [c]lain with men?
(Q)By the road you have sat for them
Like an Arabian in the wilderness;
(R)And you have polluted the land
With your harlotries and your wickedness.
Therefore the (S)showers have been withheld,
And there has been no latter rain.
You have had a (T)harlot’s forehead;
You refuse to be ashamed.
Will you not from this time cry to Me,
‘My Father, You are (U)the guide of (V)my youth?
(W)Will He remain angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken and done evil things,
As you were able.”

A Call to Repentance

The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what (X)backsliding Israel has done? She has (Y)gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot. (Z)And I said, after she had done all these things, ‘Return to Me.’ But she did not return. And her treacherous (AA)sister Judah saw it. Then I saw that (AB)for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had (AC)put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; (AD)yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she (AE)defiled the land and committed adultery with (AF)stones and trees. 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me (AG)with her whole heart, but in pretense,” says the Lord.

11 Then the Lord said to me, (AH)“Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and proclaim these words toward (AI)the north, and say:

‘Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord;
‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you.
For I am (AJ)merciful,’ says the Lord;
‘I will not remain angry forever.
13 (AK)Only acknowledge your iniquity,
That you have transgressed against the Lord your God,
And have (AL)scattered your [d]charms
To (AM)alien deities (AN)under every green tree,
And you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.

14 “Return, O backsliding children,” says the Lord; (AO)“for I am married to you. I will take you, (AP)one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to (AQ)Zion. 15 And I will give you (AR)shepherds according to My heart, who will (AS)feed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 “Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and (AT)increased in the land in those days,” says the Lord, “that they will say no more, ‘The ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ (AU)It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.

17 “At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, (AV)to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they (AW)follow[e] the dictates of their evil hearts.

18 “In those days (AX)the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of (AY)the north to (AZ)the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers.

19 “But I said:

‘How can I put you among the children
And give you (BA)a pleasant land,
A beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?’

“And I said:

‘You shall call Me, (BB)“My Father,”
And not turn away from Me.’
20 Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her [f]husband,
So (BC)have you dealt treacherously with Me,
O house of Israel,” says the Lord.

21 A voice was heard on (BD)the desolate heights,
Weeping and supplications of the children of Israel.
For they have perverted their way;
They have forgotten the Lord their God.

22 “Return, you backsliding children,
And I will (BE)heal your backslidings.”

“Indeed we do come to You,
For You are the Lord our God.
23 (BF)Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills,
And from the multitude of mountains;
(BG)Truly, in the Lord our God
Is the salvation of Israel.
24 (BH)For shame has devoured
The labor of our fathers from our youth—
Their flocks and their herds,
Their sons and their daughters.
25 We lie down in our shame,
And our [g]reproach covers us.
(BI)For we have sinned against the Lord our God,
We and our fathers,
From our youth even to this day,
And (BJ)have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

Jeremiah Laments over Judah

“If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord,
(BK)“Return to Me;
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
Then you shall not be moved.
(BL)And you shall swear, ‘The Lord lives,’
(BM)In truth, in [h]judgment, and in righteousness;
(BN)The nations shall bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they shall (BO)glory.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

(BP)“Break up your [i]fallow ground,
And (BQ)do not sow among thorns.
(BR)Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
And take away the foreskins of your hearts,
You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My fury come forth like fire,
And burn so that no one can quench it,
Because of the evil of your doings.”

An Imminent Invasion

Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:

(BS)“Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry, ‘Gather together,’
And say, (BT)‘Assemble yourselves,
And let us go into the fortified cities.’
Set up the [j]standard toward Zion.
Take refuge! Do not delay!
For I will bring disaster from the (BU)north,
And great destruction.”

(BV)The lion has come up from his thicket,
And (BW)the destroyer of nations is on his way.
He has gone forth from his place
(BX)To make your land desolate.
Your cities will be laid waste,
Without inhabitant.
For this, (BY)clothe yourself with sackcloth,
Lament and wail.
For the fierce anger of the Lord
Has not turned back from us.

“And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord,
That the heart of the king shall perish,
And the heart of the princes;
The priests shall be astonished,
And the prophets shall wonder.”

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God!
(BZ)Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
(CA)Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the [k]heart.”

11 At that time it will be said
To this people and to Jerusalem,
(CB)“A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness
Toward the daughter of My people—
Not to fan or to cleanse—
12 A wind too strong for these will come for Me;
Now (CC)I will also speak judgment against them.”

13 “Behold, he shall come up like clouds,
And (CD)his chariots like a whirlwind.
(CE)His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are plundered!”

14 O Jerusalem, (CF)wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares (CG)from Dan
And proclaims [l]affliction from Mount Ephraim:
16 “Make mention to the nations,
Yes, proclaim against Jerusalem,
That watchers come from a (CH)far country
And raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 (CI)Like keepers of a field they are against her all around,
Because she has been rebellious against Me,” says the Lord.
18 “Your(CJ) ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”

Greeting

Paul, (A)an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the saints (B)and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse:

(C)Grace to you and peace from God our Father [a]and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Their Faith in Christ

(D)We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, (E)since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of (F)your love for all the saints; because of the hope (G)which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, (H)as it has also in all the world, and (I)is bringing forth [b]fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew (J)the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from (K)Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is (L)a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your (M)love in the Spirit.

Preeminence of Christ

(N)For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask (O)that you may be filled with (P)the knowledge of His will (Q)in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 (R)that you may walk worthy of the Lord, (S)fully pleasing Him, (T)being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the (U)knowledge of God; 11 (V)strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, (W)for all patience and longsuffering (X)with joy; 12 (Y)giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of (Z)the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from (AA)the power of darkness (AB)and [c]conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 (AC)in whom we have redemption [d]through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is (AD)the image of the invisible God, (AE)the firstborn over all creation. 16 For (AF)by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or (AG)dominions or [e]principalities or [f]powers. All things were created (AH)through Him and for Him. 17 (AI)And He is before all things, and in Him (AJ)all things consist.

The Majesty of God in Judgment

To the Chief Musician. On [a]stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

76 In (A)Judah God is known;
His name is great in Israel.
In [b]Salem also is His tabernacle,
And His dwelling place in Zion.
There He broke the arrows of the bow,
The shield and sword of battle. Selah

You are more glorious and excellent
(B)Than the mountains of prey.
(C)The stouthearted were plundered;
(D)They [c]have sunk into their sleep;
And none of the mighty men have found the use of their hands.
(E)At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep.

You, Yourself, are to be feared;
And (F)who may stand in Your presence
When once You are angry?
(G)You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
(H)The earth feared and was still,
When God (I)arose to judgment,
To deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah

10 (J)Surely the wrath of man shall praise You;
With the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself.

11 (K)Make vows to the Lord your God, and pay them;
(L)Let all who are around Him bring presents to Him who ought to be feared.
12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes;
(M)He is awesome to the kings of the earth.
