The Compassion of the Lord

55 ^(A)“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    ^(B)come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
²^(C)Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
³Incline your ear, and come to me;
    ^(D)hear, that your soul may live;
^(E)and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    ^(F)my steadfast, sure love for ^(G)David.
⁴^(H)Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
    ^(I)a leader and commander for the peoples.
⁵^(J)Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and ^(K)a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
    ^(L)for he has glorified you.

⁶^(M)“Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call upon him while he is near;
⁷let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
    and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
⁸For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
⁹^(N)For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

¹⁰^(O)“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    ^(P)giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
¹¹so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but ^(Q)it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

¹²^(R)“For you shall go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
^(S)the mountains and the hills before you
    shall break forth into singing,
    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
¹³^(T)Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall make a name for the Lord,
    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

O God of Our Salvation

65 Praise ^(A)is due to you,^[a] O God, in Zion,
    and to you shall ^(B)vows be performed.
²O you who ^(C)hear prayer,
    to you ^(D)shall all flesh come.
³When ^(E)iniquities prevail against me,
    you ^(F)atone for our transgressions.
⁴^(G)Blessed is the one you choose and bring near,
    to ^(H)dwell in your courts!
We shall be ^(I)satisfied with the goodness of your house,
    the holiness of your temple!

⁵By ^(J)awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,
    O God of our salvation,
the hope of all ^(K)the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas;
⁶the one who by his strength established the mountains,
    being ^(L)girded with might;
⁷who ^(M)stills the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    ^(N)the tumult of the peoples,
⁸so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs.
You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.

⁹You visit the earth and ^(O)water it;^[b]
    you greatly enrich it;
^(P)the river of God is full of water;
    ^(Q)you provide their grain,
    for so you have prepared it.
¹⁰You water its furrows abundantly,
    settling its ridges,
softening it with ^(R)showers,
    and blessing its growth.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty;
    your wagon tracks ^(S)overflow with abundance.
¹²^(T)The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
    the hills ^(U)gird themselves with joy,
¹³^(V)the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
    the valleys deck themselves with grain,
    they ^(W)shout and sing together for joy.

Romans 8:7-17

⁷For the mind that is set on the flesh is ^(A)hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; ^(B)indeed, it cannot. ⁸Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

⁹You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact ^(C)the Spirit of God dwells in you. ^(D)Anyone who does not have ^(E)the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. ¹⁰But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. ¹¹If the Spirit of ^(F)him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus^[a] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies ^(G)through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Heirs with Christ

¹²So then, brothers,^[b] we are debtors, ^(H)not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. ¹³For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you ^(I)put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. ¹⁴For all who are ^(J)led by the Spirit of God are ^(K)sons^[c] of God. ¹⁵For ^(L)you did not receive ^(M)the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of ^(N)adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ^(O)“Abba! Father!” ¹⁶^(P)The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷and if children, then ^(Q)heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, ^(R)provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house ^(A)and sat beside the sea. ²And great crowds gathered about him, ^(B)so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. ³And ^(C)he told them many things in parables, saying: ^(D)“A sower went out to sow. ⁴And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. ⁵Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, ⁶but ^(E)when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, ^(F)they withered away. ⁷Other seeds fell among ^(G)thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. ⁸Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some ^(H)a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. ⁹^(I)He who has ears,^[a] let him hear.”

The Parable of the Sower Explained

¹⁸^(A)“Hear then the parable of the sower: ¹⁹When anyone hears the word of ^(B)the kingdom and ^(C)does not understand it, ^(D)the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. ²⁰As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately ^(E)receives it with joy, ²¹yet he has no root in himself, but ^(F)endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately ^(G)he falls away.^[a] ²²As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but ^(H)the cares of ^(I)the world and ^(J)the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. ²³As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and ^(K)understands it. He indeed ^(L)bears fruit and yields, in one case ^(M)a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
