Judgment on the Earth

24 Behold, the Lord (A)lays the earth waste, devastates it, twists its surface, and scatters its inhabitants. And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the female servant like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (B)creditor like the debtor. The earth will be completely laid waste and completely plundered, for the Lord has spoken this word. The (C)earth dries up and crumbles away, the mainland dries out and crumbles away, the (D)exalted of the people of the earth dwindle. The earth is also (E)defiled [a]by its inhabitants, for they violated laws, altered statutes, and (F)broke the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a (G)curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer for their guilt. Therefore, the (H)inhabitants of the earth decrease in number, and few people are left.

The (I)new wine mourns,
The vine decays,
All the joyful-hearted sigh.
The (J)joy of tambourines ceases,
The noise of revelers stops,
The joy of the harp ceases.
They do not drink wine with song;
(K)Intoxicating drink is (L)bitter to those who drink it.
10 The (M)city of chaos is broken down;
(N)Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.
11 There is an (O)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
(P)All joy [b]turns to gloom.
The joy of the earth is banished.
12 Desolation is left in the city
And the (Q)gate is battered to ruins.
13 For (R)so it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the [c]shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.
14 (S)They raise their voices, they shout for joy;
They cry out from the [d]west concerning the majesty of the Lord.
15 Therefore (T)glorify the Lord in the [e]east,
The (U)name of the Lord, the God of Israel,
In the [f](V)coastlands of the sea.
16 From the (W)ends of the earth we hear songs: “(X)Glory to the Righteous One,”
But I say, “[g]I am finished! I am finished! Woe to me!
The (Y)treacherous deal treacherously,
And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
17 (Z)Terror and pit and snare
[h]Confront you, you inhabitant of the earth.
18 Then it will be that the one who flees the sound of terror will fall into the pit,
And the one who [i]climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare;
For the (AA)windows [j]above are opened, and the (AB)foundations of the earth shake.
19 (AC)The earth is broken apart,
The earth is (AD)split through,
The earth is shaken violently.
20 The earth (AE)trembles like a heavy drinker
And sways like a hut,
For its (AF)wrongdoing is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, (AG)never to rise again.
21 So it will happen on that day,
That the Lord will (AH)punish the rebellious [k](AI)angels of [l]heaven on high,
And the (AJ)kings of the earth on earth.
22 They will be gathered together
Like (AK)prisoners in the [m]dungeon,
And will be confined in prison;
And after many days they will (AL)be punished.
23 Then the (AM)moon will be ashamed and the sun be put to shame,
For the (AN)Lord of armies will reign on (AO)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory will be before His elders.

Song of Praise for God’s Favor

25 Lord, You are (AP)my God;
I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name;
For You have (AQ)worked wonders,
(AR)Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
For You have turned a city into a (AS)heap,
A (AT)fortified city into a ruin;
A (AU)palace of strangers is no longer a city,
It will never be rebuilt.
Therefore a strong people will (AV)glorify You;
(AW)Cities of ruthless nations will revere You.
For You have been a (AX)stronghold for the helpless,
A stronghold for the poor in his distress,
A (AY)refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the (AZ)ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall.
Like heat in a dry land, You subdue the (BA)uproar of foreigners;
Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is [n]silenced.

(BB)Now the Lord of armies will prepare a [o]lavish banquet for (BC)all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of [p]aged wine, [q]choice pieces with marrow,
And [r]refined, aged wine.
And on this mountain He will destroy the [s](BD)covering which is over all peoples,
The veil which is [t]stretched over all nations.
He will [u](BE)swallow up death for all time,
And the Lord [v]God will (BF)wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the (BG)disgrace of His people from all the earth;
For the Lord has spoken.
And it will be said on that day,
“Behold, (BH)this is our God for whom we have (BI)waited [w]that (BJ)He might save us.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
(BK)Let’s rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
10 For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain,
And (BL)Moab will be trampled down in his place
As straw is trampled down in the water of a manure pile.
11 And he will (BM)spread out his hands in the middle of it
As a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim,
But the Lord will (BN)lay low his pride together with the trickery of his hands.
12 The (BO)unassailable fortifications of your walls He will bring down,
Lay low, and throw to the ground, to the dust.

Song of Trust in God’s Protection

26 (BP)On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a (BQ)strong city;
He sets up walls and ramparts for [x](BR)security.
Open the (BS)gates, that the (BT)righteous nation may enter,
The one that [y]remains faithful.
The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect (BU)peace,
Because he trusts in You.
(BV)Trust in the Lord forever,
For in [z]God the Lord, we have an everlasting (BW)Rock.
For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the (BX)unassailable city;
(BY)He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust.
(BZ)The foot will trample it,
The feet of the (CA)poor, the steps of the helpless.”

The (CB)way of the righteous is smooth;
O Upright One, (CC)make the path of the righteous level.
Indeed, while following the way of (CD)Your judgments, Lord,
We have waited for You eagerly;
(CE)Your name, and (CF)remembering You, is the desire of our souls.
(CG)At night [aa]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, [ab]my spirit within me (CH)seeks You diligently;
For when the earth [ac]experiences Your judgments,
The inhabitants of the world (CI)learn righteousness.
10 Though the wicked person is shown compassion,
He does not (CJ)learn righteousness;
He (CK)deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord.

11 Lord, Your hand is lifted up, yet they (CL)do not see it.
[ad]They see (CM)Your zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, [ae](CN)fire will devour Your enemies.
12 Lord, You will establish (CO)peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
13 Lord, our God, (CP)other masters besides You have ruled us;
But through You alone we [af](CQ)confess Your name.
14 (CR)The dead will not live, the [ag]departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have (CS)punished and destroyed them,
And You have eliminated all remembrance of them.
15 (CT)You have increased the nation, Lord,
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have (CU)extended all the borders of the land.
16 Lord, they sought You (CV)in distress;
They [ah]could only whisper a prayer,
Your discipline was upon them.
17 (CW)As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth,
She writhes and cries out in her labor pains;
This is how we were before You, Lord.
18 We were pregnant, we writhed in labor,
We (CX)gave birth, as it seems, only to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth,
Nor were (CY)inhabitants of the world [ai]born.
19 Your (CZ)dead will live;
[aj]Their corpses will rise.
You who lie in the dust, (DA)awake and shout for joy,
For your dew is as the dew of the [ak]dawn,
And the earth will [al]give birth to the [am]departed spirits.

20 Come, my people, (DB)enter your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little [an](DC)while
Until (DD)indignation [ao]runs its course.
21 For behold, the Lord is about to (DE)come out from His place
To (DF)punish the inhabitants of the earth for their wrongdoing;
And the earth will (DG)reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover her slain.

God’s Blessings for Israel

27 On that day (DH)the Lord will punish [ap](DI)Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
With His fierce and great and mighty sword,
Even [aq]Leviathan the twisted serpent;
And (DJ)He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.

On that day,
“A [ar](DK)vineyard of beauty, sing of it!
I, the Lord, am its keeper;
(DL)I water it every moment.
So that no one will [as]damage it,
I (DM)guard it night and day.
I have no wrath.
Should [at]someone give Me (DN)briars and thorns in battle,
Then I would step on them, (DO)I would burn them [au]completely.
Or let him [av](DP)rely on My protection,
Let him make peace with Me,
Let him (DQ)make peace with Me.”
[aw]In the days to come Jacob (DR)will take root,
Israel will (DS)blossom and sprout,
And they will fill the [ax]whole world with (DT)fruit.

Like the striking of Him who has struck them, has (DU)He struck them?
Or like the slaughter of His slain, [ay]have they been slain?
You contended with them [az]by banishing them, by (DV)driving them away.
With His fierce wind He has expelled them on the day of the (DW)east wind.
Therefore through this Jacob’s wrongdoing will be (DX)forgiven;
And this will be [ba]the full price of the [bb](DY)pardoning of his sin:
When he makes all the (DZ)altar stones like pulverized chalk stones;
When [bc]Asherim and incense altars will not stand.
10 For the fortified city is (EA)isolated,
A [bd]homestead deserted and abandoned like the desert;
(EB)There the calf will graze,
And there it will lie down and [be]feed on its branches.
11 When its (EC)limbs are dry, they are broken off;
Women come and make a fire with them,
For they are not a people of (ED)discernment,
Therefore (EE)their Maker (EF)will not have compassion on them.
And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

12 On that day the Lord (EG)will thresh from the flowing stream of the (EH)Euphrates River to the brook of Egypt, and you will be (EI)gathered up one by one, you sons of Israel. 13 It will come about also on that day that a great (EJ)trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of (EK)Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and (EL)worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem Is Warned

29 Woe, [a]Ariel, [b]Ariel the city where David once (A)camped!
Add year to year, [c](B)keep your feasts on schedule.
I will bring distress to Ariel,
And she will be a city of grieving and (C)mourning;
And she will be like an [d]Ariel to me.
I will (D)camp against you [e]encircling you,
And I will set up siegeworks against you,
And I will raise up battle towers against you.
Then you will (E)be brought low;
From the earth you will speak,
And from the dust where you are prostrate
Your words will come.
Your voice will also be like that of a [f]spirit from the ground,
And your speech will whisper from the dust.

But the multitude of your [g]enemies will become like fine (F)dust,
And the multitude of the (G)ruthless ones like the chaff which [h]blows away;
And it will happen (H)instantly, suddenly.
From the Lord of armies you will be (I)punished with (J)thunder and earthquake and loud noise,
With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.
And the (K)multitude of all the nations who wage war against [i]Ariel,
Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her,
Will be like a dream, a (L)vision of the night.
It will be as when a hungry person dreams—
And behold, he is eating;
But when he awakens, his [j]hunger is not satisfied,
Or as when a thirsty person dreams—
And behold, he is drinking,
But when he awakens, behold, he is faint
And his [k]thirst is not quenched.
(M)So will the multitude of all the nations be
Who wage war against Mount Zion.

(N)Be delayed and horrified,
Blind yourselves and be blind;
They (O)become drunk, but not with wine,
They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.
10 For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep (P)sleep,
He has (Q)shut your eyes—the prophets;
And He has covered your heads—the seers.

11 The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed [l](R)book, which, when they give it to the one who [m]is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.” 12 Then the [n]book will be given to the one who [o]is illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I [p]cannot read.”

13 Then the Lord said,

“Because (S)this people approaches Me with their [q]words
And honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me,
And their [r]reverence for Me [s]consists of the commandment of men that is taught;
14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal (T)marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And (U)the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the understanding of their men who have understanding will be concealed.”

15 Woe to those who deeply (V)hide their [t]plans from the Lord,
And whose (W)deeds are done in a dark place,
And they say, “(X)Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
16 You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered [u]as equal with the clay,
That (Y)what is made would say to its maker, “He did not make me”;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

Blessing after Discipline

17 Is it not yet just a little while
[v]Before Lebanon will be turned into a (Z)fertile field,
And the fertile field will be considered as a forest?
18 On that day those who are (AA)deaf will hear (AB)words of a book,
And out of their gloom and darkness the (AC)eyes of those who are blind will see.
19 The (AD)afflicted also will increase their joy in the Lord,
And the (AE)needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the (AF)ruthless will come to an end and the (AG)scorner will be finished,
Indeed (AH)all who [w]are intent on doing evil will be eliminated,
21 Who [x]cause a person to be indicted by a word,
And (AI)set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate,
And [y](AJ)defraud the one in the right with [z]meaningless arguments.

22 Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed (AK)Abraham, says concerning the house of Jacob:

“Jacob (AL)will not be ashamed now, nor will his face turn pale now;
23 But when [aa]he sees his (AM)children, the (AN)work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will (AO)sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24 Those who (AP)err in [ab]mind will (AQ)know [ac]the truth,
And those who [ad]criticize will [ae](AR)accept instruction.
