The Fall of Mankind

3 Now ^(A)the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” ² The woman said to the serpent, “^(B)From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; ³ but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” ^4 (C)The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! ⁵ For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and ^(D)you will ^[a]become like God, knowing good and evil.” ^6 (E)When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. ⁷ Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they ^(F)knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.

⁸ Now they heard the sound of ^(G)the Lord God walking in the garden in the ^[b]cool of the day, ^(H)and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “^(I)Where are you?” ¹⁰ He said, “^(J)I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” ¹¹ And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” ^12 (K)The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.” ¹³ Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “^(L)The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” ¹⁴ Then the Lord God said to the serpent,

¹⁶ To the woman He said,

¹⁷ Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

²⁰ Now the man named his wife ^[j](W)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. ²¹ And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

²² Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of ^(X)Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from ^(Y)the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— ²³ therefore the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. ²⁴ So ^(Z)He drove the man out; and at the ^(AA)east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the ^(AB)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to ^(AC)the tree of life.

Healing the Man Born Blind

9 As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. ² And His disciples asked Him, “^(A)Rabbi, who sinned, ^(B)this man or his ^(C)parents, that he would be born blind?” ³ Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was ^(D)so that the works of God might be displayed in him. ⁴ We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me ^(E)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. ⁵ While I am in the world, I am ^(F)the Light of the world.” ⁶ When He had said this, He ^(G)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, ⁷ and said to him, “Go, wash in ^(H)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and ^(I)washed, and ^(J)came back seeing. ⁸ So the neighbors, and those who previously saw ^[a]him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to ^(K)sit and beg?” ⁹ Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” ^[b]The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.”

Controversy over the Man

¹³ They *brought ^[a]the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. ^14 (A)Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. ^15 (B)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” ¹⁶ Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He ^(C)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such ^[b](D)signs?” And ^(E)there was dissension among them. ¹⁷ So they *said ^(F)again to the man who was blind, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a ^(G)prophet.”

²⁸ They spoke abusively to him and said, “You are His disciple, but ^(A)we are disciples of Moses. ²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, ^(B)we do not know where He is from.” ³⁰ The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes! ³¹ We know that ^(C)God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is ^[a]God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. ^32 [b]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. ^33 (D)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” ³⁴ They answered him, “^(E)You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?” So they ^[c](F)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had ^[d](G)put him out, and upon finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the ^(H)Son of Man?” ³⁶ He answered ^[e]by saying, “And ^(I)who is He, ^[f]Sir, that I may believe in Him?” ³⁷ Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and ^(J)He is the one who is talking with you.” ³⁸ And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And he ^(K)worshiped Him. ³⁹ And Jesus said, “^(L)For judgment I came into this world, so that ^(M)those who do not see may see, and ^(N)those who see may become blind.” ⁴⁰ Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, “^(O)We are not blind too, are we?” ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, “^(P)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, ‘^(Q)We see,’ your sin remains.
