Jerusalem Is Assured of Help

30 Take courage, Jerusalem. God, who gave you your name, will now bring comfort to you. 31 Misery will come to those who mistreated you and then rejoiced when you fell. 32 Misery will come to those cities that made your children slaves. Misery will be the fate of Babylon, that city which swallowed up your children. 33 Just as that city rejoiced when you fell and took delight in your ruin, so now she will mourn when she herself is deserted. 34 I will turn her proud boastings into mourning and take away her large population in which she took pride. 35 I, the Eternal God, will send down fire on her, and it will burn for many days. Her ruins will be haunted by demons for a long time to come.

36 Look to the east, Jerusalem, and see the joy that God is bringing to you. 37 Look, your children are coming home, the children that were taken from you. They have been gathered together from the east and from the west by the command of God, the Holy One. And now they are coming home, rejoicing in the glory of God.

(A)Jerusalem, take off the clothes you have worn in your mourning and distress, and put on the eternal splendor of God's glory. Put around you the cloak of God's righteousness. Place on your head the crown of the glory of the Eternal God. God will show your splendor to every nation on earth. Forever he will say to you:

Your security comes from your righteousness, and your splendor from your devotion to me.[a]

Get up, Jerusalem, stand on the mountaintop; see where God, the Holy One, is bringing your children together from the east and from the west. They are rejoicing that God has remembered them. Jerusalem, your children were led away by their enemies; they left you on foot, but God is bringing them back to you, carried in royal splendor. God has commanded that every high mountain and the everlasting hills shall be made low; he has commanded that the valleys shall be filled and the ground leveled, so that the people of Israel may come safely home in the glory of God. At the command of God, forests of fragrant trees will spring up to provide shade for the people of Israel. God will lead Israel home. They will return with great joy, guided by his mercy and righteousness, surrounded by the light of his glorious presence.

Jerusalem Is Assured of Help

30 Take courage, O Jerusalem,
    for the one who named you will comfort you.(A)
31 Wretched will be those who mistreated you
    and who rejoiced at your fall.
32 Wretched will be the cities that your children served as slaves;
    wretched will be the city that received your offspring.
33 For just as she rejoiced at your fall
    and was glad for your ruin,
    so she will be grieved at her own desolation.
34 I will take away her pride in her great population,
    and her insolence will be turned to grief.(B)
35 For fire will come upon her from the Everlasting for many days,
    and for a long time she will be inhabited by demons.

36 Look toward the east, O Jerusalem,
    and see the joy that is coming to you from God.(C)
37 Look, your children are coming, whom you sent away;
    they are coming, gathered from east and west,
at the word of the Holy One,
    rejoicing in the glory of God.(D)

Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem,
    and put on forever the beauty of the glory from God.(E)
Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God;
    put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting,(F)
for God will show your splendor everywhere under heaven,
for God will give you evermore the name,
    “Righteous Peace, Godly Glory.”(G)

Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height;
    look toward the east,
and see your children gathered from west and east
    at the word of the Holy One,
    rejoicing that God has remembered them.(H)
For they went out from you on foot,
    led away by their enemies,
but God will bring them back to you,
    carried in glory, as on a royal throne.(I)
For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low
    and the valleys filled up, to make level ground,
    so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God.(J)
The woods and every fragrant tree
    have shaded Israel at God’s command.(K)
For God will lead Israel with joy,
    in the light of his glory,
    with the mercy and righteousness that come from him.

D. Baruch Addresses Jerusalem

30 Take courage, Jerusalem!
    The one who gave you your name will console you.(A)
31 Wretched shall be those who harmed you,
    who rejoiced at your downfall;
32 Wretched shall be the cities where your children were enslaved,
    wretched the city that received your children.(B)
33 As that city rejoiced at your collapse,(C)
    and made merry at your downfall,
    so shall she grieve over her own desolation.
34 I will take from her the rejoicing crowds,
    and her exultation shall be turned to mourning:
35 For fire shall come upon her(D)
    from the Eternal One, for many a day,
    to be inhabited by demons for a long time.[a]
36 Look to the east, Jerusalem;
    see the joy that comes to you from God!(E)
37 Here come your children whom you sent away,
    gathered in from east to west
By the word of the Holy One,
    rejoicing in the glory of God.

Chapter 5

Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery;
    put on forever the splendor of glory from God:(F)
Wrapped in the mantle of justice from God,
    place on your head the diadem
    of the glory of the Eternal One.(G)
For God will show your splendor to all under the heavens;
    you will be named by God forever:
    the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship.(H)

Rise up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights;
    look to the east and see your children
Gathered from east to west
    at the word of the Holy One,
    rejoicing that they are remembered by God.
Led away on foot by their enemies they left you:
    but God will bring them back to you
    carried high in glory as on royal thrones.(I)
For God has commanded
    that every lofty mountain
    and the age-old hills be made low,
That the valleys be filled to make level ground,
    that Israel may advance securely in the glory of God.(J)
The forests and every kind of fragrant tree
    have overshadowed Israel at God’s command;(K)
For God is leading Israel in joy
    by the light of his glory,
    with the mercy and justice that are his.
