Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin

4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard^(A) and the Sadducees^(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. ²They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.^(C) ³They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail^(D) until the next day. ⁴But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew^(E) to about five thousand.

⁵The next day the rulers,^(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. ⁶Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,^(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. ⁷They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

⁸Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,^(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!^(I) ⁹If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame^(J) and are being asked how he was healed, ¹⁰then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,^(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,^(L) that this man stands before you healed. ¹¹Jesus is

“‘the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’^[a]^(M)

¹²Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”^(N)

¹³When they saw the courage of Peter and John^(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,^(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.^(Q) ¹⁴But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. ¹⁵So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin^(R) and then conferred together. ¹⁶“What are we going to do with these men?”^(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,^(T) and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

¹⁸Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.^(U) ¹⁹But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?^(V) You be the judges! ²⁰As for us, we cannot help speaking^(W) about what we have seen and heard.”^(X)

²¹After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people^(Y) were praising God^(Z) for what had happened. ²²For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

The Believers Pray

²³On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. ²⁴When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.^(AA) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.^(AB) ²⁵You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:^(AC)

“‘Why do the nations rage
    and the peoples plot in vain?
²⁶The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
against the Lord
    and against his anointed one.^[b]’^[c]^(AD)

²⁷Indeed Herod^(AE) and Pontius Pilate^(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(AG) whom you anointed. ²⁸They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.^(AH) ²⁹Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.^(AI) ³⁰Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders^(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”^(AK)

³¹After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.^(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit^(AM) and spoke the word of God^(AN) boldly.^(AO)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

³²All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.^(AP) ³³With great power the apostles continued to testify^(AQ) to the resurrection^(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace^(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all ³⁴that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,^(AT) brought the money from the sales ³⁵and put it at the apostles’ feet,^(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.^(AV)

³⁶Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas^(AW) (which means “son of encouragement”), ³⁷sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.^(AX)

Job

19 Then Job replied:

²“How long will you torment^(A) me
    and crush^(B) me with words?
³Ten times^(C) now you have reproached^(D) me;
    shamelessly you attack me.
⁴If it is true that I have gone astray,
    my error^(E) remains my concern alone.
⁵If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me^(F)
    and use my humiliation against me,
⁶then know that God has wronged me^(G)
    and drawn his net^(H) around me.^(I)

⁷“Though I cry, ‘Violence!’ I get no response;^(J)
    though I call for help,^(K) there is no justice.^(L)
⁸He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;^(M)
    he has shrouded my paths in darkness.^(N)
⁹He has stripped^(O) me of my honor^(P)
    and removed the crown from my head.^(Q)
¹⁰He tears me down^(R) on every side till I am gone;
    he uproots my hope^(S) like a tree.^(T)
¹¹His anger^(U) burns against me;
    he counts me among his enemies.^(V)
¹²His troops advance in force;^(W)
    they build a siege ramp^(X) against me
    and encamp around my tent.^(Y)

¹³“He has alienated my family^(Z) from me;
    my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.^(AA)
¹⁴My relatives have gone away;
    my closest friends^(AB) have forgotten me.
¹⁵My guests^(AC) and my female servants^(AD) count me a foreigner;
    they look on me as on a stranger.
¹⁶I summon my servant, but he does not answer,
    though I beg him with my own mouth.
¹⁷My breath is offensive to my wife;
    I am loathsome^(AE) to my own family.
¹⁸Even the little boys^(AF) scorn me;
    when I appear, they ridicule me.^(AG)
¹⁹All my intimate friends^(AH) detest me;^(AI)
    those I love have turned against me.^(AJ)
²⁰I am nothing but skin and bones;^(AK)
    I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.^[a]

²¹“Have pity on me, my friends,^(AL) have pity,
for the hand of God has struck^(AM) me.
²²Why do you pursue^(AN) me as God does?^(AO)
Will you never get enough of my flesh?^(AP)

²³“Oh, that my words were recorded,
    that they were written on a scroll,^(AQ)
²⁴that they were inscribed with an iron tool^(AR) on^[b] lead,
    or engraved in rock forever!^(AS)
²⁵I know that my redeemer^[c]^(AT) lives,^(AU)
    and that in the end he will stand on the earth.^[d]
²⁶And after my skin has been destroyed,
    yet^[e] in^[f] my flesh I will see God;^(AV)
²⁷I myself will see him
    with my own eyes^(AW)—I, and not another.
    How my heart yearns^(AX) within me!

²⁸“If you say, ‘How we will hound^(AY) him,
    since the root of the trouble lies in him,^[g]’
²⁹you should fear the sword yourselves;
    for wrath will bring punishment by the sword,^(AZ)
    and then you will know that there is judgment.^[h]”^(BA)

Zophar

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite^(BB) replied:

²“My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
because I am greatly disturbed.^(BC)
³I hear a rebuke^(BD) that dishonors me,
and my understanding inspires me to reply.

⁴“Surely you know how it has been from of old,^(BE)
    ever since mankind^[i] was placed on the earth,
⁵that the mirth of the wicked^(BF) is brief,
    the joy of the godless^(BG) lasts but a moment.^(BH)
⁶Though the pride^(BI) of the godless person reaches to the heavens^(BJ)
    and his head touches the clouds,^(BK)
⁷he will perish forever,^(BL) like his own dung;
    those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’^(BM)
⁸Like a dream^(BN) he flies away,^(BO) no more to be found,
    banished^(BP) like a vision of the night.^(BQ)
⁹The eye that saw him will not see him again;
    his place will look on him no more.^(BR)
¹⁰His children^(BS) must make amends to the poor;
    his own hands must give back his wealth.^(BT)
¹¹The youthful vigor^(BU) that fills his bones^(BV)
    will lie with him in the dust.^(BW)

¹²“Though evil^(BX) is sweet in his mouth
    and he hides it under his tongue,^(BY)
¹³though he cannot bear to let it go
    and lets it linger in his mouth,^(BZ)
¹⁴yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;^(CA)
    it will become the venom of serpents^(CB) within him.
¹⁵He will spit out the riches^(CC) he swallowed;
    God will make his stomach vomit^(CD) them up.
¹⁶He will suck the poison^(CE) of serpents;
    the fangs of an adder will kill him.^(CF)
¹⁷He will not enjoy the streams,
    the rivers^(CG) flowing with honey^(CH) and cream.^(CI)
¹⁸What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;^(CJ)
    he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.^(CK)
¹⁹For he has oppressed the poor^(CL) and left them destitute;^(CM)
    he has seized houses^(CN) he did not build.

²⁰“Surely he will have no respite from his craving;^(CO)
    he cannot save himself by his treasure.^(CP)
²¹Nothing is left for him to devour;
    his prosperity will not endure.^(CQ)
²²In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;^(CR)
    the full force of misery will come upon him.^(CS)
²³When he has filled his belly,^(CT)
    God will vent his burning anger^(CU) against him
    and rain down his blows on him.^(CV)
²⁴Though he flees^(CW) from an iron weapon,
    a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.^(CX)
²⁵He pulls it out of his back,
    the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors^(CY) will come over him;^(CZ)
²⁶    total darkness^(DA) lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire^(DB) unfanned will consume him^(DC)
    and devour what is left in his tent.^(DD)
²⁷The heavens will expose his guilt;
    the earth will rise up against him.^(DE)
²⁸A flood will carry off his house,^(DF)
    rushing waters^[j] on the day of God’s wrath.^(DG)
²⁹Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
    the heritage appointed for them by God.”^(DH)
