³³ Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything. ³⁴ Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.”^(A)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(A)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted^[a](B) by the devil.^{(C) 2} After fasting forty days and forty nights,^(D) he was hungry.

¹¹ Then the devil left him,^(A) and angels came and attended him.^(B)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(A)

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,^(B) left the Jordan^(C) and was led by the Spirit^(D) into the wilderness, ² where for forty days^(E) he was tempted^[a] by the devil.^(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

³¹ Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,^(A) eat something.”

³² But he said to them, “I have food to eat^(B) that you know nothing about.”

³³ Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

³⁴ “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will^(C) of him who sent me and to finish his work.^(D)

⁸ But food does not bring us near to God;^(A) we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

²¹ “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? ²² These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish^(A) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.^{(B) 23} Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility^(C) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
