The Shipwreck

³⁹Now when it was day, ^(A)they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned if possible to run the ship ashore. ⁴⁰So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that tied the rudders. Then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach. ⁴¹But striking a reef,^[a] ^(B)they ran the vessel aground. The bow stuck and remained immovable, and the stern was being broken up by the surf. ⁴²^(C)The soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape. ⁴³But the centurion, ^(D)wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and make for the land, ⁴⁴and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that ^(E)all were brought safely to land.

¹⁰Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way
    ^(A)will fall into his own pit,
    but the blameless ^(B)will have a goodly inheritance.
¹¹A rich man is wise in his ^(C)own eyes,
    but a poor man who has understanding ^(D)will find him out.
¹²When ^(E)the righteous triumph, there is great glory,
    but when ^(F)the wicked rise, people hide themselves.
¹³Whoever ^(G)conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
    but he who ^(H)confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
¹⁴Blessed is the one who ^(I)fears the Lord^[a] always,
    but whoever ^(J)hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
¹⁵Like ^(K)a roaring lion or ^(L)a charging bear
    is ^(M)a wicked ruler over a poor people.
¹⁶A ruler who ^(N)lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor,
    but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.
¹⁷If one is burdened with ^(O)the blood of another,
    he will be a fugitive until death;^[b]
    let no one help him.
¹⁸^(P)Whoever ^(Q)walks in integrity will be delivered,
    but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.
