In Iconium

14 At Iconium^(A) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.^(B) There they spoke so effectively that a great number^(C) of Jews and Greeks believed. ²But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.^(D) ³So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly^(E) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.^(F) ⁴The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.^(G) ⁵There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,^(H) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.^(I) ⁶But they found out about it and fled^(J) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, ⁷where they continued to preach^(K) the gospel.^(L)

In Lystra and Derbe

⁸In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth^(M) and had never walked. ⁹He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed^(N) ¹⁰and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”^(O) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.^(P)

¹¹When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”^(Q) ¹²Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.^(R) ¹³The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

¹⁴But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes^(S) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: ¹⁵“Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,^(T) like you. We are bringing you good news,^(U) telling you to turn from these worthless things^(V) to the living God,^(W) who made the heavens and the earth^(X) and the sea and everything in them.^(Y) ¹⁶In the past, he let^(Z) all nations go their own way.^(AA) ¹⁷Yet he has not left himself without testimony:^(AB) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;^(AC) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”^(AD) ¹⁸Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

¹⁹Then some Jews^(AE) came from Antioch and Iconium^(AF) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul^(AG) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. ²⁰But after the disciples^(AH) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

²¹They preached the gospel^(AI) in that city and won a large number^(AJ) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium^(AK) and Antioch, ²²strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.^(AL) “We must go through many hardships^(AM) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. ²³Paul and Barnabas appointed elders^[a]^(AN) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,^(AO) committed them to the Lord,^(AP) in whom they had put their trust. ²⁴After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,^(AQ) ²⁵and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

²⁶From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,^(AR) where they had been committed to the grace of God^(AS) for the work they had now completed.^(AT) ²⁷On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them^(AU) and how he had opened a door^(AV) of faith to the Gentiles. ²⁸And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.^(AW)

39 “Do you know when the mountain goats^(A) give birth?
    Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?^(B)
²Do you count the months till they bear?
    Do you know the time they give birth?^(C)
³They crouch down and bring forth their young;
    their labor pains are ended.
⁴Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds;
    they leave and do not return.

⁵“Who let the wild donkey^(D) go free?
    Who untied its ropes?
⁶I gave it the wasteland^(E) as its home,
    the salt flats^(F) as its habitat.^(G)
⁷It laughs^(H) at the commotion in the town;
    it does not hear a driver’s shout.^(I)
⁸It ranges the hills^(J) for its pasture
    and searches for any green thing.

⁹“Will the wild ox^(K) consent to serve you?^(L)
    Will it stay by your manger^(M) at night?
¹⁰Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness?^(N)
    Will it till the valleys behind you?
¹¹Will you rely on it for its great strength?^(O)
    Will you leave your heavy work to it?
¹²Can you trust it to haul in your grain
    and bring it to your threshing floor?

¹³“The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
    though they cannot compare
    with the wings and feathers of the stork.^(P)
¹⁴She lays her eggs on the ground
    and lets them warm in the sand,
¹⁵unmindful that a foot may crush them,
    that some wild animal may trample them.^(Q)
¹⁶She treats her young harshly,^(R) as if they were not hers;
    she cares not that her labor was in vain,
¹⁷for God did not endow her with wisdom
    or give her a share of good sense.^(S)
¹⁸Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
    she laughs^(T) at horse and rider.

¹⁹“Do you give the horse its strength^(U)
    or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
²⁰Do you make it leap like a locust,^(V)
    striking terror^(W) with its proud snorting?^(X)
²¹It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,^(Y)
    and charges into the fray.^(Z)
²²It laughs^(AA) at fear, afraid of nothing;
    it does not shy away from the sword.
²³The quiver^(AB) rattles against its side,
    along with the flashing spear^(AC) and lance.
²⁴In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
    it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.^(AD)
²⁵At the blast of the trumpet^(AE) it snorts, ‘Aha!’
    It catches the scent of battle from afar,
    the shout of commanders and the battle cry.^(AF)

²⁶“Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom
    and spread its wings toward the south?^(AG)
²⁷Does the eagle soar at your command
    and build its nest on high?^(AH)
²⁸It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night;
    a rocky crag^(AI) is its stronghold.
²⁹From there it looks for food;^(AJ)
    its eyes detect it from afar.
³⁰Its young ones feast on blood,
    and where the slain are, there it is.”^(AK)

40 The Lord said to Job:^(AL)

²“Will the one who contends with the Almighty^(AM) correct him?^(AN)
Let him who accuses God answer him!”^(AO)

³Then Job answered the Lord:

⁴“I am unworthy^(AP)—how can I reply to you?
I put my hand over my mouth.^(AQ)
⁵I spoke once, but I have no answer^(AR)—
twice, but I will say no more.”^(AS)

⁶Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:^(AT)

⁷“Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.^(AU)

⁸“Would you discredit my justice?^(AV)
    Would you condemn me to justify yourself?^(AW)
⁹Do you have an arm like God’s,^(AX)
    and can your voice^(AY) thunder like his?^(AZ)
¹⁰Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
    and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.^(BA)
¹¹Unleash the fury of your wrath,^(BB)
    look at all who are proud and bring them low,^(BC)
¹²look at all who are proud^(BD) and humble them,^(BE)
    crush^(BF) the wicked where they stand.
¹³Bury them all in the dust together;^(BG)
    shroud their faces in the grave.^(BH)
¹⁴Then I myself will admit to you
    that your own right hand can save you.^(BI)

¹⁵“Look at Behemoth,
    which I made^(BJ) along with you
    and which feeds on grass like an ox.^(BK)
¹⁶What strength^(BL) it has in its loins,
    what power in the muscles of its belly!^(BM)
¹⁷Its tail sways like a cedar;
    the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.^(BN)
¹⁸Its bones are tubes of bronze,
    its limbs^(BO) like rods of iron.^(BP)
¹⁹It ranks first among the works of God,^(BQ)
    yet its Maker^(BR) can approach it with his sword.^(BS)
²⁰The hills bring it their produce,^(BT)
    and all the wild animals play^(BU) nearby.^(BV)
²¹Under the lotus plants it lies,
    hidden among the reeds^(BW) in the marsh.^(BX)
²²The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
    the poplars by the stream^(BY) surround it.
²³A raging river^(BZ) does not alarm it;
    it is secure, though the Jordan^(CA) should surge against its mouth.
²⁴Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
    or trap it and pierce its nose?^(CB)
