Cornelius Calls for Peter

10 At Caesarea^(A) there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. ²He and all his family were devout and God-fearing;^(B) he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. ³One day at about three in the afternoon^(C) he had a vision.^(D) He distinctly saw an angel^(E) of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

⁴Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.

The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering^(F) before God.^(G) ⁵Now send men to Joppa^(H) to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. ⁶He is staying with Simon the tanner,^(I) whose house is by the sea.”

⁷When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. ⁸He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.^(J)

Peter’s Vision^(K)

⁹About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof^(L) to pray. ¹⁰He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.^(M) ¹¹He saw heaven opened^(N) and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. ¹²It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. ¹³Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

¹⁴“Surely not, Lord!”^(O) Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”^(P)

¹⁵The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”^(Q)

¹⁶This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

¹⁷While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision,^(R) the men sent by Cornelius^(S) found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. ¹⁸They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.

¹⁹While Peter was still thinking about the vision,^(T) the Spirit said^(U) to him, “Simon, three^[a] men are looking for you. ²⁰So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”^(V)

²¹Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

²²The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man,^(W) who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”^(X) ²³Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers^(Y) from Joppa went along.^(Z) ²⁴The following day he arrived in Caesarea.^(AA) Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. ²⁵As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. ²⁶But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”^(AB)

²⁷While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.^(AC) ²⁸He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile.^(AD) But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.^(AE) ²⁹So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

³⁰Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes^(AF) stood before me ³¹and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. ³²Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ ³³So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

³⁴Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism^(AG) ³⁵but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.^(AH) ³⁶You know the message^(AI) God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news^(AJ) of peace^(AK) through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.^(AL) ³⁷You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— ³⁸how God anointed^(AM) Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing^(AN) all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.^(AO)

³⁹“We are witnesses^(AP) of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,^(AQ) ⁴⁰but God raised him from the dead^(AR) on the third day and caused him to be seen. ⁴¹He was not seen by all the people,^(AS) but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate^(AT) and drank with him after he rose from the dead. ⁴²He commanded us to preach to the people^(AU) and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.^(AV) ⁴³All the prophets testify about him^(AW) that everyone^(AX) who believes^(AY) in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”^(AZ)

⁴⁴While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on^(BA) all who heard the message. ⁴⁵The circumcised believers who had come with Peter^(BB) were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out^(BC) even on Gentiles.^(BD) ⁴⁶For they heard them speaking in tongues^[b]^(BE) and praising God.

Then Peter said, ⁴⁷“Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.^(BF) They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”^(BG) ⁴⁸So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.^(BH) Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

⁹“If my heart has been enticed^(S) by a woman,^(T)
    or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door,
¹⁰then may my wife grind^(U) another man’s grain,
    and may other men sleep with her.^(V)
¹¹For that would have been wicked,^(W)
    a sin to be judged.^(X)
¹²It is a fire^(Y) that burns to Destruction^[a];^(Z)
    it would have uprooted my harvest.^(AA)

¹³“If I have denied justice to any of my servants,^(AB)
    whether male or female,
    when they had a grievance against me,^(AC)
¹⁴what will I do when God confronts me?^(AD)
    What will I answer when called to account?^(AE)
¹⁵Did not he who made me in the womb make them?^(AF)
    Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?^(AG)

¹⁶“If I have denied the desires of the poor^(AH)
    or let the eyes of the widow^(AI) grow weary,^(AJ)
¹⁷if I have kept my bread to myself,
    not sharing it with the fatherless^(AK)—
¹⁸but from my youth I reared them as a father would,
    and from my birth I guided the widow^(AL)—
¹⁹if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing,^(AM)
    or the needy^(AN) without garments,
²⁰and their hearts did not bless me^(AO)
    for warming them with the fleece^(AP) from my sheep,
²¹if I have raised my hand against the fatherless,^(AQ)
    knowing that I had influence in court,^(AR)
²²then let my arm fall from the shoulder,
    let it be broken off at the joint.^(AS)
²³For I dreaded destruction from God,^(AT)
    and for fear of his splendor^(AU) I could not do such things.^(AV)

²⁴“If I have put my trust in gold^(AW)
    or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’^(AX)
²⁵if I have rejoiced over my great wealth,^(AY)
    the fortune my hands had gained,^(AZ)
²⁶if I have regarded the sun^(BA) in its radiance
    or the moon^(BB) moving in splendor,
²⁷so that my heart was secretly enticed^(BC)
    and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,^(BD)
²⁸then these also would be sins to be judged,^(BE)
    for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.^(BF)

²⁹“If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s misfortune^(BG)
    or gloated over the trouble that came to him^(BH)—
³⁰I have not allowed my mouth to sin
    by invoking a curse against their life^(BI)—
³¹if those of my household have never said,
    ‘Who has not been filled with Job’s meat?’^(BJ)—
³²but no stranger had to spend the night in the street,
    for my door was always open to the traveler^(BK)—
³³if I have concealed^(BL) my sin as people do,^[b]
    by hiding^(BM) my guilt in my heart
³⁴because I so feared the crowd^(BN)
    and so dreaded the contempt of the clans
    that I kept silent^(BO) and would not go outside—

³⁵(“Oh, that I had someone to hear me!^(BP)
    I sign now my defense—let the Almighty answer me;
    let my accuser^(BQ) put his indictment in writing.
³⁶Surely I would wear it on my shoulder,^(BR)
    I would put it on like a crown.^(BS)
³⁷I would give him an account of my every step;^(BT)
    I would present it to him as to a ruler.^(BU))—

³⁸“if my land cries out against me^(BV)
    and all its furrows are wet^(BW) with tears,
³⁹if I have devoured its yield without payment^(BX)
    or broken the spirit of its tenants,^(BY)
⁴⁰then let briers^(BZ) come up instead of wheat
    and stinkweed^(CA) instead of barley.”

The words of Job are ended.^(CB)

Elihu

32 So these three men stopped answering Job,^(CC) because he was righteous in his own eyes.^(CD) ²But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite,^(CE) of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself^(CF) rather than God.^(CG) ³He was also angry with the three friends,^(CH) because they had found no way to refute Job,^(CI) and yet had condemned him.^[c]^(CJ) ⁴Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he.^(CK) ⁵But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused.

⁶So Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite said:

“I am young in years,
    and you are old;^(CL)
that is why I was fearful,
    not daring to tell you what I know.
⁷I thought, ‘Age should speak;
    advanced years should teach wisdom.’^(CM)
⁸But it is the spirit^[d]^(CN) in a person,
    the breath of the Almighty,^(CO) that gives them understanding.^(CP)
⁹It is not only the old^[e] who are wise,^(CQ)
    not only the aged^(CR) who understand what is right.^(CS)

¹⁰“Therefore I say: Listen to me;^(CT)
    I too will tell you what I know.^(CU)
¹¹I waited while you spoke,
    I listened to your reasoning;
while you were searching for words,
¹²    I gave you my full attention.
But not one of you has proved Job wrong;
    none of you has answered his arguments.^(CV)
¹³Do not say, ‘We have found wisdom;^(CW)
    let God, not a man, refute^(CX) him.’
¹⁴But Job has not marshaled his words against me,^(CY)
    and I will not answer him with your arguments.

¹⁵“They are dismayed and have no more to say;
    words have failed them.^(CZ)
¹⁶Must I wait, now that they are silent,
    now that they stand there with no reply?
¹⁷I too will have my say;
    I too will tell what I know.^(DA)
¹⁸For I am full of words,
    and the spirit^(DB) within me compels me;^(DC)
¹⁹inside I am like bottled-up wine,
    like new wineskins ready to burst.^(DD)
²⁰I must speak and find relief;
    I must open my lips and reply.^(DE)
²¹I will show no partiality,^(DF)
    nor will I flatter anyone;^(DG)
²²for if I were skilled in flattery,
    my Maker^(DH) would soon take me away.^(DI)
