¹⁴ And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into ^(A)an angel of light.

¹¹ lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

⁴ whose minds ^(A)the god of this age ^(B)has blinded, who do not believe, lest ^(C)the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, ^(D)who is the image of God, should shine on them.

^44 (A)You are of your father the devil, and the ^(B)desires of your father you want to ^(C)do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and ^(D)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

⁵ And now, O Father, glorify Me together ^[a]with Yourself, with the glory ^(A)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

^6 (B)“I have ^[b]manifested Your name to the men ^(C)whom You have given Me out of the world. ^(D)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. ⁷ Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. ⁸ For I have given to them the words ^(E)which You have given Me; and they have received them, ^(F)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that ^(G)You sent Me.

⁹ “I pray for them. ^(H)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. ¹⁰ And all Mine are Yours, and ^(I)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. ^11 (J)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, ^(K)keep^[c] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one ^(L)as We are. ¹² While I was with them ^[d]in the world, ^(M)I kept them in ^[e]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and ^(N)none of them is ^[f]lost ^(O)except the son of ^[g]perdition, ^(P)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³ But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. ¹⁴ I have given them Your word; ^(Q)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, ^(R)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but ^(S)that You should keep them from the evil one.

John’s Witness: The True Light

⁶ There was a ^(A)man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ This man came for a ^(B)witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might ^(C)believe. ⁸ He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that ^(D)Light. ^9 (E)That^[a] was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

Cain Murders Abel^(A)

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore ^[a]Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” ² Then she bore again, this time his brother ^[b]Abel. Now ^(B)Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. ³ And ^[c]in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit ^(C)of the ground to the Lord. ⁴ Abel also brought of ^(D)the firstborn of his flock and of ^(E)their fat. And the Lord ^(F)respected Abel and his offering, ⁵ but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

⁶ So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? ⁷ If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is ^[d]for you, but you should rule over it.”

⁸ Now Cain ^[e]talked with Abel his ^[f]brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and ^(G)killed him.

⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”

He said, ^(H)“I do not know. Am I ^(I)my brother’s keeper?”

¹⁰ And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood ^(J)cries out to Me from the ground.

The Temptation and Fall of Man^(A)

3 Now ^(B)the serpent was ^(C)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

² And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the ^(D)fruit of the trees of the garden; ³ but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you ^(E)touch it, lest you die.’ ”

^4 (F)Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. ⁵ For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The Imperative of Love^(A)

¹⁰ In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. ¹¹ For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, ^(B)that we should love one another, ¹² not as ^(C)Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
