Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and ^(A)revelations of the Lord. ² I know a man ^(B)in Christ who fourteen years ago was ^(C)caught up to ^(D)the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, ^(E)God knows. ³ And I know that this man was caught up into ^(F)paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, ^(G)God knows— ⁴ and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. ⁵ On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, ^(H)except of my weaknesses— ⁶ though if I should wish to boast, ^(I)I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. ⁷ So ^(J)to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,^{[a] (K)}a thorn was given me in the flesh, ^(L)a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. ^8 (M)Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. ⁹ But he said to me, ^(N)“My grace is sufficient for you, for ^(O)my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that ^(P)the power of Christ may rest upon me. ^10 (Q)For the sake of Christ, then, ^(R)I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For ^(S)when I am weak, then I am strong.

Concern for the Corinthian Church

^11 (T)I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I was ^(U)not at all inferior to these super-apostles, ^(V)even though I am nothing. ^12 (W)The signs of a true apostle were performed among you ^(X)with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. ¹³ For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that ^(Y)I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

¹⁴ Here ^(Z)for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for ^(AA)I seek not what is yours but you. For ^(AB)children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but ^(AC)parents for their children. ^15 (AD)I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If ^(AE)I love you more, am I to be loved less? ¹⁶ But granting that ^(AF)I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by deceit. ¹⁷ Did I take advantage of you ^(AG)through any of those whom I sent to you? ^18 (AH)I urged Titus to go, and sent ^(AI)the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not act in the same spirit? Did we not take the same steps?

¹⁹ Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? It is ^(AJ)in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and ^(AK)all for your upbuilding, beloved. ²⁰ For I fear that perhaps ^(AL)when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. ²¹ I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those ^(AM)who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, ^(AN)sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

Final Warnings

13 ^(AO)This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established ^(AP)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. ^2 (AQ)I warned ^(AR)those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that ^(AS)if I come again I will not spare them— ³ since you seek proof that Christ ^(AT)is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but ^(AU)is powerful among you. ⁴ For ^(AV)he was crucified in weakness, but ^(AW)lives by the power of God. For ^(AX)we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you ^(AY)we will live with him by the power of God.

⁵ Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. ^(AZ)Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that ^(BA)Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! ⁶ I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. ⁷ But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. ⁸ For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. ⁹ For we are glad when ^(BB)we are weak and you are strong. Your ^(BC)restoration is what we pray for. ¹⁰ For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come ^(BD)I may not have to be ^(BE)severe in my use of ^(BF)the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.

Final Greetings

¹¹ Finally, brothers,^[b] rejoice. ^(BG)Aim for restoration, comfort one another,^{[c] (BH)}agree with one another, ^(BI)live in peace; and the God of love and ^(BJ)peace will be with you. ^12 (BK)Greet one another with a holy kiss. ^13 (BL)All the saints greet you.

^14 (BM)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and ^(BN)the love of God and ^(BO)the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Greeting

1 Paul, an ^(BP)apostle—^(BQ)not from men nor through man, but ^(BR)through Jesus Christ and God the Father, ^(BS)who raised him from the dead— ² and all ^(BT)the brothers^[d] who are with me,

To ^(BU)the churches of Galatia:

^3 (BV)Grace to you and peace ^(BW)from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, ^4 (BX)who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present ^(BY)evil age, according to the will of ^(BZ)our God and Father, ⁵ to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

No Other Gospel

⁶ I am astonished that you are ^(CA)so quickly deserting ^(CB)him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to ^(CC)a different gospel— ^7 (CD)not that there is another one, but ^(CE)there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. ⁸ But even if we or ^(CF)an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, ^(CG)let him be accursed. ⁹ As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, ^(CH)let him be accursed.

¹⁰ For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying ^(CI)to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a ^(CJ)servant^[e] of Christ.

Paul Called by God

¹¹ For ^(CK)I would have you know, brothers, that ^(CL)the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel.^{[f] 12 (CM)}For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it ^(CN)through a revelation of Jesus Christ. ¹³ For you have heard of ^(CO)my former life in Judaism, how ^(CP)I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. ¹⁴ And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely ^(CQ)zealous was I for ^(CR)the traditions of my fathers. ¹⁵ But when he ^(CS)who had set me apart ^(CT)before I was born,^[g] and who ^(CU)called me by his grace, ¹⁶ was pleased to reveal his Son to^[h] me, in order ^(CV)that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone;^{[i] 17} nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

¹⁸ Then ^(CW)after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. ¹⁹ But I saw none of the other apostles except James ^(CX)the Lord's brother. ²⁰ (In what I am writing to you, ^(CY)before God, I do not lie!) ^21 (CZ)Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. ²² And I was still unknown in person to ^(DA)the churches of Judea that are in Christ. ²³ They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” ²⁴ And they glorified God because of me.

Paul Accepted by the Apostles

2 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. ² I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those ^(DB)who seemed influential) the gospel that ^(DC)I proclaim among the Gentiles, ^(DD)in order to make sure I was not running or had not ^(DE)run in vain. ³ But even Titus, who was with me, ^(DF)was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. ^4 (DG)Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who ^(DH)slipped in to spy out ^(DI)our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, ^(DJ)so that they might bring us into slavery— ⁵ to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that ^(DK)the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. ⁶ And from those ^(DL)who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; ^(DM)God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential ^(DN)added nothing to me. ⁷ On the contrary, when they saw that I had been ^(DO)entrusted with ^(DP)the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised ⁸ (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), ⁹ and when James and Cephas and John, ^(DQ)who seemed to be ^(DR)pillars, perceived the ^(DS)grace that was given to me, they ^(DT)gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. ¹⁰ Only, they asked us to remember the poor, ^(DU)the very thing I was eager to do.

Paul Opposes Peter

¹¹ But ^(DV)when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him ^(DW)to his face, because he stood condemned. ¹² For before certain men came from James, ^(DX)he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing ^(DY)the circumcision party.^{[j] 13} And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ But when I saw that their ^(DZ)conduct was not in step with ^(EA)the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas ^(EB)before them all, “If you, though a Jew, ^(EC)live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Justified by Faith

¹⁵ We ourselves are Jews by birth and not ^(ED)Gentile sinners; ¹⁶ yet we know that ^(EE)a person is not justified^[k] by works of the law ^(EF)but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, ^(EG)because by works of the law no one will be justified.

¹⁷ But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found ^(EH)to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! ¹⁸ For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. ¹⁹ For through the law I ^(EI)died to the law, so that I might ^(EJ)live to God. ²⁰ I have been ^(EK)crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives ^(EL)in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, ^(EM)who loved me and ^(EN)gave himself for me. ²¹ I do not nullify the grace of God, for ^(EO)if righteousness^[l] were through the law, ^(EP)then Christ died for no purpose.
