³⁹ As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,^(A) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,^(B) he must die.”^(C) But not one of them said a word.

⁵ David^(A) burned with anger^(B) against the man^(C) and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives,^(D) the man who did this must die!

⁴⁴ Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,^(A) if you do not die, Jonathan.^(B)”

Jonathan Eats Honey

²⁴ Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath,^(A) saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.

² All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,^[a] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.

¹⁰ Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.”

¹⁶ But the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.^(A)”

³¹ As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom^(A) will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”

⁶ Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”
