Jesus at the Temple^(A)

⁴⁵ When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. ⁴⁶ “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’^[a];^(B) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’^[b]”^(C)

⁴⁷ Every day he was teaching at the temple.^(D) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.^{(E) 48} Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

⁴⁵ When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. ⁴⁶ They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.^(A)

⁹ “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted^(A) and put to death,^(B) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.^(C)

¹⁸ The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,^(A) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.^(B)

¹² “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.^(A)

⁴⁹ Because of this, God in his wisdom^(A) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’^{(B) 50} Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel^(C) to the blood of Zechariah,^(D) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.^(E)

¹⁶ You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,^(A) and they will put some of you to death. ¹⁷ Everyone will hate you because of me.^(B)

²⁵ Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it^(A) for eternal life.^(B)
