  1. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.

  10. Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
  11. Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.
  12. He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
  13. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now arise, go out from this land and return to the land of your kindred.’”
  14. God Blesses and Renames Jacob

    God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”
  15. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.”
  16. And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him,
  17. and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.
  18. And Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth.
  19. So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.
  20. The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

    Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor.
  21. So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem),
  22. As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
  23. Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
  24. they camped by the Jordan from Beth-jeshimoth as far as Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.
  25. So we remained in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
