  1. The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle.
  2. Abner looked behind him and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?” “It is,” he answered.
  3. Then Abner said to him, “Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
  4. Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
  5. But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
  6. Then Joab stopped pursuing Abner and assembled the whole army. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing.
  7. They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak.
  8. Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.
  9. (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)
  10. Among the Thirty were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
  11. And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son succeeded him as king.
  12. Asa King of Judah

    In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah,
  13. Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done.
  14. He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
  15. Although he did not remove the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life.
  16. There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.
  17. Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
  18. Asa then took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace. He entrusted it to his officials and sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.
  19. Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. He conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinnereth in addition to Naphtali.
  20. Then King Asa issued an order to all Judah—no one was exempt—and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using there. With them King Asa built up Geba in Benjamin, and also Mizpah.
  21. As for all the other events of Asa’s reign, all his achievements, all he did and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased.
  22. Then Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king.
  23. Nadab King of Israel

    Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.
  24. Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.
  25. There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.
