How to Live the Bible — Time for Rest

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-nineteenth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

It is good to work, good to get tired, and good to rest. Work is an important principle of life, but it’s not the only principle. God allows rest, even demands it, because there are some things that we experience only when we cease the work we usually do and take a different posture in life.

Work involves our spirits, but in the quiet, peace, and play of rest there are other ways we hear the voice of God. Rest is both a natural law, and a law revealed by God. We find it in different forms in the social customs of all the various cultures, and in the Scriptures there are over 30 different Hebrew and Greek words meaning rest. One of them is a foundation stone of biblical teaching: Sabbath.

Approaching Prayer with Thanksgiving and Praise

Chrystal Evans HurstBy Chrystal Evans Hurst

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Sometimes when we go to God in prayer, we do it with a big laundry list of what we want God to do for us! (Not me, of course. Other people.) And thankfully, God is gracious to hear and receive our prayers for what we need and want.

But what if we first focused on praising and thanking God? When we praise God, we adore him for who he is. When we thank God, we express our gratitude for what he has done. Rather than beginning with ourselves, our prayers of praise begin with God. If God never did another thing for us, these are the reasons we would still love, admire, and honor him.

Spiritual Lessons Christians and Jews Share During the High Holy Days

Days of Repentance banner graphic to subscribe to free daily email devotions during the High Holy Days

By Yael Eckstein

Yael Eckstein

The High Holy Days are about to begin! During these 10 holy days of introspection and prayer, the Jewish people will embark on a spiritual journey—a chance for meaningful change, repentance, and reconnecting with God.

The holidays begin with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and end with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest time of the year for the Jewish people.

During this sacred time, the Jewish people are reminded to actively practice three virtues, called the three pillars: repentance, prayer, and charity. Putting these biblical principles into practice helps to ready our hearts for God.

These virtues are rooted in the Hebrew Bible (which Christians know as the Old Testament), a source of wisdom for Jews and Christians alike. So we can all reconnect with God by reflecting on and practicing these three virtues.

If 100 Christians Represented All of Global Christianity

According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, the global Christian population totals 2.5 billion people. How to Live the Bible — When We Work Too Much

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-eighteenth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

Imbalance can be the result of too much of a good thing. At least on one day that we know of Jesus told his disciples to knock off work. Throngs of people were coming and going, the disciples “did not even have a chance to eat,” Mark tells us, and so Jesus said: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mk. 6:31). This simple but important event models four characteristics of rest: dropping the normal thing you do, finding a quiet place, enjoying fellowship with Christ, and being rejuvenated by rest. Some people hardly ever get around to doing any of them.
