How to Live the Bible — What Does It Take to Live a “Good” Life?

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-twenty-ninth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

An older man walks haltingly through the cemetery at Normandy on the north coast of France. He passes through the sea of clean white crosses and stars of David marking the resting places of hundreds of young men whose lives were cut off on D-Day; they died decades earlier so that multitudes could go on living in peaceable societies as parents and teachers and engineers and neighbors. He drops to his knees in front of the marker of someone who saved his life, is thrust into a moment of self-examination, and struggles to get out a plea to his wife who is standing at his side:

“Tell me I’ve lived a good life…. Tell me I’m a good man.”

What Is a Lectionary?

A lectionary is a collection of readings from the Bible (called “lections”) that are intended to enhance the act of worship.

Lectionaries have been in use in the Christian church from the fourth century, spanning denominational differences. Scripture selections are arranged according to a schedule which follows the church calendar of Sundays and festivals, centering on the life and work of Christ.

Church Calendar

Christian lectionaries generally include a reading from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), a Psalm, a reading from the Epistles, and a Gospel reading. The The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) offers a three-year cycle with four readings for every Sunday in the church year, which begins on the first Sunday of Advent (four Sundays prior to December 25).

The Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous) is now a part of Bible Gateway’s many Bible reading plans for your daily enjoyment, personal worship, and spiritual benefit. You can have it sent to your inbox for free each morning when you sign up here.

4 Bible Gateway Free Account Basics for a Great Scripture-Reading Experience

If you’re new to Bible Gateway—or even if you’ve been coming to our site for years—we hope this basic tutorial on how to customize your Bible-reading will help you get the most out of your own Bible Gateway free personal account.

To ensure that your Bible Gateway personal account is as helpful as possible as you read the Bible online, here are a few quick notes about the toolbar (pictured below).

Bible Gateway toolbar

1. Highlighting Verses

When reading the Bible, you can highlight Bible passages in different colors, much as you might use a physical highlighter to mark passages in a print Bible. To highlight a passage, tap, double-click, or drag-select the passage you want to highlight. The toolbar pictured above will appear and you’ll see circles of colors from which to choose.

Click or tap one of the four colors (yellow, red, blue, green) to highlight the passage using that color. Click or tap the X icon (to the right of the colors) to remove the highlight.

How a Biblical View of Money Changed Our Marriage

Aaron and Jennifer SmithBy Aaron and Jennifer Smith

A survey done by Ramsey Solutions published in February 2018 reported that money is the number one issue married couples argue about. We have definitely had our moments of arguing about money problems. However, as God transformed our hearts and minds toward money, not only did we get out of debt, but the contention around our finances drastically declined. We strongly believe having a healthy, biblical view of finances and being willing to embrace God’s perspective on debt and money is a significant part of pursuing a marriage after God.

Does reading the headlines each day stress you out? Are you already anxious about the hectic holiday season? The Bible instructs us not to spend our lives worrying—but that’s easier said than done. In addition to trying not to worry, is there something active we can do to keep our focus centered on Christ and not the day-to-day grind of headlines and deadlines?

The Bible has practical advice for anyone who wants to live differently:

…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 (NIV)

This holiday season, choose to do something different. Take a break from angry politics and holiday stress, and rediscover the joy of simple thankfulness. How to Live the Bible — What Is Holiness?

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-twenty-eighth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

The idea that we need someone else’s help to do what seems to be our responsibility is hard for many people to accept. Living a “clean” life is our responsibility, and we can’t pull it off on our own. Have you ever made a resolution to improve your life in some significant way, and been disappointed to find that your resolve lasted about 30 days (or 30 minutes), and then you were back to your old ways? I’m not talking about something as simple as changing your eating habits or exercise. I’m talking about change of the heart. “I’m going to start being a patient person—right now!” “I’m going to decide not to have this hot anger inside that keeps burning other people.” “I’m going to stop obsessing about the things I want and stop being jealous of others who have more than I do.” I, I, I. It’s like asking a man standing in a barrel how far off the ground he thinks he can lift himself.

How and Why to Pray the Scriptures for Your Children: An Interview with Jodie Berndt

Jodie BerndtHow can using the Bible to shape your desires and requests open the door to God’s provision to free you from worry and fear in your parenting? How can you pray the Bible for developing your children’s faith, character, safety, relationships, and their future?

Bible Gateway interviewed Jodie Berndt (@jodieberndt), author of Praying the Scriptures for Your Children 20th Anniversary Edition: Discover How to Pray God’s Purpose for Their Lives (Zondervan, 2020).

Why is praying for children important?

Jodie Berndt: Every parent wants to give good gifts to their kids. Robbie and I certainly tried to equip our four children with everything we thought they might need.

The trouble is, our children don’t always want the gifts that we give (like that one Christmas, when I got everyone their own posture brace), and sometimes even the best gifts are not in our power to give. We cannot, for example, give “salvation” to our children, nor can we bless them with things like wisdom, kindness, and joy.

Recapture the Wonder of God-With-Us This Advent Season

Scott EricksonBy Scott Erickson

I. Love. Holidays. I’m always up for a celebration! And the crème de la crème for me is Christmas. It is by far my favorite time of year. But a few years ago, as the twinkly lights and evergreens came out, as they always do, I found myself increasingly ambivalent about the whole ordeal.

We had just finished an exhausting and divisive election. We were overwhelmed by the destruction in Syria. We had an unprecedented year of school shootings. Zika. Flint water crisis. Et cetera. And then came Christmas.
