How did a study Bible help you early in your Christian faith?

Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr.: I was a teenager when I first received a study Bible, and it was like having the lights turned up in a room. All of a sudden, I wasn’t just sitting there trying to figure out what the tabernacle was, but I had a note in the Bible that explained the tabernacle to me. That study Bible helped me follow scriptural arguments and answer questions—all in such a way that I never confused the notes about the Word of God with the Word of God itself. It fueled my appetite for Scripture, because there was an even greater exhilaration of reading the Word of God. I’ve been a huge encourager about study Bibles ever since I first started the serious study of Scripture.

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-seventieth lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:2-6

Study: Bible-Based Worldview Declining Among American Christians

Chart from the Religious Views & Practices SurveySince 2010, the number of young adult (18–39 year-olds) born again Christians with a basic biblical worldview has dropped by two-thirds, from almost 15% of the population to near 5%, according to Probe Ministries’ Religious Views & Practices Survey—a comprehensive study of the results of numerous surveys conducted in the last decade by Pew, Barna, GSS (General Social Survey), and Probe.

“The Probe survey shows that even born again Christians can have a false view of Jesus Christ and embrace a pluralistic worldview,” says Kerby Anderson, Probe Ministries president and host of the nationally-syndicated Point of View radio program. “Pastors and church leaders just can’t assume any longer that members of their church or Christian organization have a biblical worldview.”

“God has chosen to make known… the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.” Colossians 1:27-29

Study: Gen Z Has a Precarious Relationship with the Bible

Visit State of the Bible 2021Americans born between 1997 and 2012—characterized as Gen Z—are still deciding what to do with the Bible while exhibiting openness to Scripture, according to American Bible Society’s (@americanbible) 11th annual State of the Bible report.

“Many in Gen Z are coming of age without the wisdom and comfort that others have found in the Bible,” says John Farquhar Plake, PhD and director of ministry intelligence for American Bible Society. “More than other generations, Gen Z is uncertain about the value and uniqueness of the Bible for their daily lives.”

My Biggest Surprise When I Became a Mom

Sarah BraggBy Sarah Bragg

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. —Proverbs 22:6

I thought having kids was all about them being born and raised. What I didn’t know was how much they were going to raise me. On May 31, 2008, when Sinclair Bragg was born, I, too, was born. I just didn’t know it yet.

She learned to walk. So did I—I learned to walk into who I really am.

She learned to talk. So did I—I learned to speak differently to myself.

She learned to face her fear of the dark. So did I—I learned to face the fear of failure.
