How to Live the Bible — To Be Human Is to Believe

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)

When my daughter was a baby and my wife would put her in my arms and leave the room, the baby’s head would shift, eyes would scan back and forth, brow would wrinkle, and then—most certainly—came that cry of distress. A cry that cut to the quick. I knew that she was thinking, “Mom has disappeared. She is gone. She has ceased to exist. And I will never ever see her again.” A baby does not have the cognitive ability to know that someone continues to exist even when the physical evidence is withdrawn. Babies cannot be “certain of what we do not see.”

Is Love Your First Priority?: An Interview with Jared Byas

Jared ByasWhat does the Bible mean when it instructs us to “speak the truth in love”? Does a biblically-based Christian life mean you have all the answers? What should it look like for Christians to love their neighbors deeply and authentically? How is truth lived out in love in practical ways every day? Is what we believe less important than how we believe it?

Bible Gateway interviewed Jared Byas (@jbyas) about his book, Love Matters More: How Fighting to Be Right Keeps Us from Loving Like Jesus (Zondervan, 2020).

What does “love matters more” mean?

Jared Byas: Somehow so many of us Christians have let getting our facts right about God be the most important thing in the Christian life. That was my life and my story. Until slowly, some very patient people kindly pointed me toward a life that revolves around those two great commandments to love God and love our neighbor. It does not mean that truth doesn’t matter. But it does mean that love matters more. Than truth. Than being right. Than making sure our friend on Facebook knows they’re wrong about their political or religious beliefs. Than all of it.

I love watching the sunrise on the horizon of Lake Michigan, and it always reminds me of the dawning of the new life of faith. The black-painted sky gradually thins and stars lose their sparkle against the graying morning. On the horizon, where the sun hides low like a lion in tall grass, the darkness melts before the advancing, red-tinged light. A fire is coming. And then it shoots out across the landscape—just a small ray—but the darkness has no chance against it. Then the brilliant arch advances. By the time the full orb rides on the horizon, its radiant heat is already drying the night air and warming my face.

Galatians Reminds Us We’re Accepted and Free: An Interview with Jada Edwards

Jada EdwardsWhen was the last time you thoroughly studied the book of Galatians? Do you know who wrote it, why he did, and how it should impact your life? How should the words of this book, written centuries ago, help you today when you have an overwhelming sense of feeling unaccepted?

Bible Gateway interviewed Jada Edwards (@JadaEdwards1721) about her video Bible study, Galatians Study Guide with DVD: Accepted and Free—Beautiful Word Bible Studies (Zondervan, 2020).

What is the Beautiful Word Bible Study Series?

Jada Edwards: It’s a series that’s connected to the Beautiful Word Bible, which is a version of the Bible that uses illustrated pages and graphics that just make the text more visually appealing. It doesn’t change any content. It’s the NIV. The Beautiful Word Bible Study Series is going to be a compatible series that will go through various books of the Bible. This first one is Galatians. The audience is for anybody that loves the Bible. Clearly, it has a bias toward women because it has a lot of feminine graphics and coloring pages, which is a big thing now among women.

How to Live the Bible — Working for Christ

In recent lessons we’ve looked at a biblical view of work, how it comes from the nature of God, and what happens if we work too little or too much. And what the biblical view of rest is.

Whatever corrective we need for our attitudes toward work or the way we go about it, there is one biblical principle that defines and shapes work in such a way that it becomes a noble and rich part of our experience: We work for Christ.
