How long has it been since you and your family were amazed by God? I mean really, speechlessly, surprised and wowed?

Sometimes the Bible seems full of stories we’ve been hearing forever. We think that we know the Bible stories and what they mean for our lives. And sometimes it’s hard even to get children out of bed for the same old cereal, much less get them up 15 minutes early to hear “the same old story.” And all their favorite books, movies, games, and TV shows—filled with monsters, quests, and ancient secrets—compete with the Bible for our nights and weekends too.

When Truth Invades Your Brokenness

Sandi PattyBy Sandi Patty

I pretended that I was good.

Marriage was good. Life was good. Being a mom of young children was good. My career was good. I worked hard to make it look like I had it all together. I would sing from emotional depths, then leave the stage, go to my dressing room, where no one would see me, and sit in the corner and cry. I would weep tears from so deep down I honestly didn’t know where they were coming from. And then I’d put the mask back on to go meet the people who were kind enough to come to the concert. When the line dwindled and the venue lights dimmed, I’d get back on the bus and do what? Eat.

ESV Story of Redemption Bible: An Interview with Greg Gilbert

Greg GilbertDo you view the Bible as a disconnected series of moral tales interspersed between impossible commandments, woven into a maze of mysteries that somehow produces a message about a nice Jesus in the New Testament to counter the mean God of the Old Testament (as Bryan Chapell, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, has phrased it)?

Bible Gateway interviewed Greg Gilbert (@greggilbert), general editor of the ESV Story of Redemption Bible: A Journey Through the Unfolding Promises of God (Crossway, 2018).

Life and Light Books

If you walked into someone’s home, picked a big book off a shelf, and read a single line on a random page, one thing is certain: you would not understand it. That is because we receive meaning through words by seeing them in their context.

One of the most helpful things we can do to understand the Bible better is to gain a clear comprehension of the whole sweep of the biblical text. To see “the big picture.” Grabbing a verse here and there for life meaning is like saying to God that we will only listen to him if he uses Twitter to send us tweets.

No, the Bible is a vast, epic story. The story of God, and the story of humanity.

The Hebrew Scriptures (what Christians call “The Old Testament”) are a collection of writings that dozens of authors wrote over hundreds of years. It is breathtaking. The books of the Old Testament include history, prophecy, poetry, wisdom, and law.

The Pentateuch (“five books”)—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—tell the story of beginnings. The creation of the universe, the fall of humanity into sin and corruption, the development of humanity. We learn about the character of God, a personal God who uses a particular family to show how he would work through covenant. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Out of love God delivered this people from slavery (Exodus), gave them definition for life (the commandments and laws), and brought them eventually to a land of their own.

Discover Your Ministry in Everyday Living: An Interview with Shannan Martin

Shannan MartinAre you feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to live a life of intention and meaning? Where do we begin? How can you best learn what it means to love and be loved right where God has placed you?

Bible Gateway interviewed Shannan Martin (@shannanwrites) about her book, The Ministry of Ordinary Places: Waking Up to God’s Goodness Around You (Thomas Nelson, 2018).

How does the title of your book speak to its theme?

Shannan Martin: When my family moved to an unfamiliar, unspectacular neighborhood, I desperately wanted to believe we were here for a reason. I longed for meaning, but in a world that grows more complicated and fractured by the day, I wasn’t sure where to start. Christian culture has done a great job of instilling in believers the idea that we should always be doing something for the kingdom of God. But with our ideas of “ministry” reserved for pastors, church-planters, and overseas missionaries, where does that leave the rest of us?

Be Inspired By Biblical Stories of Gratitude

Every year, the Thanksgiving holiday serves as a reminder for us to give thanks to our Creator. Many of us find it easier to focus on aspects of the season’s stress—the demands of family and work and homemaking, packed into shortening days. But the Bible has some radical advice for anyone who wants to live differently:

…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 (NIV)

In all circumstances. How difficult that so often is! We need all the help—all the training in gratitude—we can get our hands on. Fortunately, the Bible has a lot of lessons in gratitude. What would it look like for us to be students of gratitude over the course of this season? To help with this, Bible Gateway is offering the free Give Thanks email devotional.

How Jonah’s Story Fits the 21st Century: An Interview with Anthony Carter

Anthony CarterHow is the ancient story of Jonah the prophet a microcosm of the human story in the 21st century? How does the prophet’s rebellious spirit and his resulting circumstances demonstrate the surprising and unstoppable grace of God?

Bible Gateway interviewed Anthony Carter (@eastpc) about his book, Running from Mercy: Jonah and the Surprising Story of God’s Unstoppable Grace (B&H Books, 2018).

Briefly describe the story found in the book of Jonah.

Anthony Carter: The story of Jonah is the story of God. It’s the story of God’s desire to use sinners in sharing the message that God saves sinners.

Jonah was a prophet called upon by God to go preach the message of salvation to those whom Jonah had determined did not deserve the mercy of God. Jonah refuses to go but soon discovers that God’s will does not get compromised by the will of men. Jonah suddenly finds himself in the middle of a storm—both naturally and spiritually. From the depths of the storm, he’s thrown into the depths of the sea; Jonah finds himself running from God, but he can’t outrun God. God finally gets Jonah’s attention, and Jonah repents of his sin while in the belly of a fish. The greatness of God’s mercy is seen in that God commissions Jonah a second time. And this time, Jonah preaches to the people of Nineveh. They repent and are the recipients of the mercy and grace of God as well. Jonah is frustrated at their repentance because he believes God’s mercy is too wide. Yet, God reminds Jonah that the mercy that was wide enough for him is also wide for all who call upon his name.
