  1. The idea seemed good to me; so I selected twelve of you, one man from each tribe.

  9. Driving Out the Nations

    When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—
  10. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
  11. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.
  12. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
  13. so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
  14. For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.
  15. If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant,
  16. take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.
  17. He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.
  18. For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life.
  19. The Right of the Firstborn

    If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,
  20. A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.
  21. Marriage Violations

    If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her
  22. Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her.
  23. and the elders shall take the man and punish him.
  24. They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.
  25. If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
