18 Trong năm thứ ba của nạn hạn hán, CHÚA phán cùng Ê-li rằng: “Hãy đi gặp vua A-háp vì ta sắp cho mưa xuống.” 2 Vậy Ê-li đi gặp A-háp.
Đến lúc đó không có thực phẩm trong Xa-ma-ri. 3 Vua A-háp sai gọi Áp-đia, quản lý cung vua. Áp-đia là người theo CHÚA thật lòng. 4 Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các nhà tiên tri của CHÚA thì Áp-đia giấu một trăm tiên tri trong hai hang đá, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Ông mang thức ăn và nước uống cho họ. 5 A-háp bảo Áp-đia, “Hãy đi xem xét mọi suối và thung lũng trong xứ. Biết đâu chúng ta tìm được cỏ để nuôi sống ngựa và la để chúng ta khỏi phải giết chúng nó.” 6 Cho nên mỗi người chọn một vùng trong xứ để đi lùng; A-háp đi một phía, còn Áp-đia đi phía khác. 7 Trong khi Áp-đia đang đi đường thì Ê-li gặp ông. Áp-đia nhận ra Ê-li nên cúi rạp xuống đất và thưa, “Thầy có phải là Ê-li không?”
8 Ê-li trả lời, “Phải. Hãy đi bảo chủ ngươi rằng ta đang ở đây.”
9 Áp-đia thưa, “Tôi có làm gì quấy mà ông trao mạng tôi cho vua A-háp? Vua sẽ giết tôi.
10 Tôi thề trong danh CHÚA là Thượng Đế hằng sống của ông rằng vua đã sai người đi lùng kiếm ông khắp mọi dân, mọi nước. Nếu quan cai trị vùng nào nói ông không có ở đó thì A-háp buộc quan ấy phải thề rằng đúng ông không có trong xứ ấy. 11 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi nói với chủ tôi rằng, ‘Ê-li đang ở đây.’ 12 Rồi lỡ Thần Linh của CHÚA mang ông đi nơi khác sau khi tôi rời ông thì sao? Nếu tôi đi bảo A-háp rằng ông ở đây mà vua đến không gặp ông thì mạng tôi sẽ không còn! Tôi đã theo CHÚA từ khi còn nhỏ. 13 Không có ai thuật cho ông nghe điều tôi đã làm sao? Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các tiên tri của CHÚA thì tôi mang họ đi giấu trong hai cái hang, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Tôi mang thức ăn và nước nuôi họ. 14 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi bảo chủ tôi rằng ông ở đây. Chắc chắn vua sẽ giết tôi!”
15 Ê-li đáp, “Ta chỉ CHÚA vạn quân, Đấng ta phục vụ rằng hôm nay ta sẽ ra mắt A-háp.”
16 Vậy Áp-đia đi gặp A-háp và cho biết chỗ Ê-li đang ở. A-háp liền đi gặp Ê-li.
17 Khi vua thấy Ê-li liền hỏi, “Có phải anh là tay quấy rối trong Ít-ra-en không?”
18 Ê-li đáp, “Tôi không gây rối trong Ít-ra-en. Chính bệ hạ và nhà cha bệ hạ mới gây rối vì không vâng theo mệnh lệnh CHÚA. Vua đã đi theo Ba-anh. 19 Bây giờ xin bảo tất cả dân Ít-ra-en gặp tôi trên núi Cạt-mên. Bệ hạ cũng hãy mang đến bốn trăm năm mươi tiên tri của Ba-anh và bốn trăm tiên tri của A-sê-ra là những người ăn chung bàn với Giê-xa-bên.” [a]
20 Vậy A-háp triệu tập tất cả dân Ít-ra-en và các tiên tri đó đến núi Cạt-mên. 21 Ê-li đến gần dân chúng và bảo, “Các ngươi đi hàng hai cho đến bao giờ? Nếu CHÚA là Thượng Đế thật, hãy theo Ngài. Nhưng nếu Ba-anh là Thượng Đế thật thì hãy theo hắn đi!”
Nhưng dân chúng làm thinh. 22 Ê-li nói, “Ta là nhà tiên tri duy nhất của CHÚA ở đây, còn số tiên tri của Ba-anh là bốn trăm năm mươi người. 23 Hãy mang hai con bò đực. Các tiên tri Ba-anh hãy chọn một con, giết nó và sả thịt ra. Họ phải chất thịt lên củi nhưng không được châm lửa. Ta sẽ làm con bò kia, chất thịt trên củi và cũng không châm lửa. 24 Tiên tri Ba-anh của các ngươi sẽ khẩn cầu cùng thần mình, còn ta sẽ khẩn cầu cùng CHÚA. Thần nào trả lời bằng cách làm cho củi cháy lên là Thượng Đế thật.”
Tất cả dân chúng đồng ý.
25 Ê-li liền bảo các nhà tiên tri Ba-anh, “Mấy anh đông cho nên làm trước đi. Hãy chọn một con bò rồi làm thịt. Hãy cầu nguyện thần của mấy anh, nhưng không được châm lửa.”
26 Vậy chúng bắt con bò và làm thịt. Chúng cầu nguyện với Ba-anh từ sáng đến trưa, kêu la lên, “Ba-anh ơi, xin đáp lời chúng tôi!” Nhưng chẳng thấy động tĩnh gì cũng không thấy ai trả lời. Chúng nhảy múa quanh bàn thờ chúng đã dựng lên.
27 Đến trưa Ê-li chế giễu chúng rằng, “Hãy cầu nguyện lớn lên nữa đi. Nếu Ba-anh là thần chắc ông ta đang suy nghĩ, bận việc, hay đang đi ngao du! Có thể ông ta đang ngủ cũng chưa biết chừng cho nên mấy anh phải đánh thức ông ta dậy mới được!” 28 Các nhà tiên tri cầu nguyện lớn tiếng hơn nữa, chúng lấy gươm và giáo cắt thịt mình đến nỗi máu chảy ra, vì đó là lối chúng thờ phụng. 29 Đến quá xế trưa mà chúng vẫn làm như thế cho tới giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều. Nhưng không nghe động tĩnh gì. Ba-anh không trả lời, chẳng ai ngó ngàng tới.
30 Sau đó Ê-li gọi toàn dân, “Bây giờ các ngươi hãy lại đây.” Vậy họ tụ tập quanh ông rồi Ê-li xây sửa lại bàn thờ của CHÚA đã bị phá sập. 31 Ông lấy mười hai tảng đá đại diện cho mười hai chi tộc, tức số con trai Gia-cốp. (CHÚA đã đổi tên Gia-cốp ra Ít-ra-en.) 32 Ê-li dùng các tảng đá đó xây lại bàn thờ để tôn kính CHÚA. Rồi ông đào một cái rãnh xung quanh bàn thờ lớn đủ chứa được khoảng mười bốn lít hột giống [b]. 33 Ê-li chất củi lên bàn thờ, sả con bò ra từng miếng rồi đặt các miếng đó lên củi. 34 Rồi ông bảo, “Lấy bốn vò đựng đầy nước đổ lên thịt và củi.” Ông bảo tiếp, “Làm một lần nữa,” thì họ làm lần nữa. Ông bảo, “Làm lần thứ ba,” thì họ làm lần thứ ba. 35 Nước tràn xuống từ bàn thờ và chảy đầy rãnh.
36 Đến giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều, tiên tri Ê-li đến gần bàn thờ. Ông cầu nguyện, “Lạy Chúa, Ngài là Thượng Đế của Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác, và Ít-ra-en. Xin chứng tỏ cho mọi người thấy Ngài là Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en và tôi là tôi tớ Ngài. Xin hãy cho dân nầy thấy rằng chính Ngài đã truyền lệnh cho tôi làm những điều nầy. 37 Lạy CHÚA, xin đáp lời cầu nguyện của tôi để dân nầy biết rằng Ngài là CHÚA và là Thượng Đế để khiến họ đổi lòng.”
38 Lửa từ CHÚA loè xuống thiêu đốt sinh tế, củi, đá, và đất xung quanh bàn thờ đồng thời làm cạn khô hết nước trong rãnh. 39 Khi toàn thể dân chúng thấy vậy, họ đều sấp mặt xuống đất kêu lên, “CHÚA là Thượng Đế! CHÚA là Thượng Đế!”
40 Ê-li liền ra lệnh, “Hãy bắt hết các nhà tiên tri của Ba-anh! Đừng để ai trốn thoát!” Dân chúng bắt tất cả các nhà tiên tri. Rồi Ê-li dắt họ xuống thung lũng Ki-sôn và giết họ tại đó.
41 Sau đó Ê-li bảo A-háp, “Bây giờ vua hãy đi, ăn và uống vì mưa lớn sắp đổ xuống.” 42 Vậy vua A-háp đi ăn uống. Trong lúc ấy Ê-li lên đỉnh núi Cạt-mên cúi xuống đất gục đầu giữa hai đầu gối. 43 Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi nhìn về phía biển.”
Đứa đầy tớ đi nhìn rồi trình, “Tôi chẳng thấy gì cả.” Ê-li bảo nó đi nhìn lại lần nữa. Nó làm như thế bảy lần. 44 Đến lần thứ bảy, đầy tớ trình, “Tôi thấy có một đám mây nhỏ cỡ bằng nắm tay nhô lên từ dưới biển.”
Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi bảo A-háp chuẩn bị quân xa sẵn sàng để đi về nhà ngay bây giờ. Nếu không mưa sẽ giữ ông lại.”
45 Ít lâu sau trời phủ mây đen kịt. Gió bắt đầu thổi và trong chốc lát mưa lớn đổ xuống. A-háp liền leo lên quân xa đi về Ghít-rê-ên. 46 CHÚA ban sức mạnh cho Ê-li. Ông buộc áo quần ngang hông và chạy bộ trước A-háp cho đến Ghít-rê-ên.
18 Bien des jours s’écoulèrent. Au cours de la troisième année de sécheresse, l’Eternel adressa la parole à Elie en ces termes : Va trouver Achab, et je ferai pleuvoir sur ce pays.
2 Elie partit afin de rencontrer Achab.
Comme la famine s’était aggravée à Samarie, 3 Achab avait convoqué Abdias, l’intendant de son palais. Celui-ci craignait l’Eternel : 4 lorsque la reine Jézabel avait voulu exterminer tous les prophètes de l’Eternel, Abdias avait sauvé cent d’entre eux en les cachant en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et en leur procurant à manger et à boire. 5 Achab avait ordonné à Abdias : Va, parcours le pays à la recherche de toute source d’eau et de tout fond de torrent ; peut-être découvrirons-nous assez d’herbe pour maintenir en vie nos chevaux et nos mulets sans être obligés d’abattre une partie de notre bétail.
6 Ils se répartirent le pays à parcourir. Achab partit seul de son côté, et Abdias prit une autre direction.
7 Alors qu’Abdias était en chemin, Elie arriva à sa rencontre. Abdias le reconnut et s’inclina face contre terre devant lui en demandant : Est-ce bien toi, mon seigneur Elie ?
8 – C’est moi-même, lui répondit-il. Va dire à ton maître que j’arrive.
9 – Oh ! répliqua Abdias, par quel péché ai-je mérité que tu me fasses mettre à mort par la main d’Achab ? 10 Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, je t’assure qu’il n’y a pas un peuple ni un royaume où mon maître ne t’ait pas fait chercher ; et quand les représentants de ces pays disaient que tu n’étais pas chez eux, il les faisait jurer qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé. 11 Et maintenant, tu me demandes d’aller annoncer à mon seigneur que tu arrives. 12 Mais, à peine t’aurai-je quitté que l’Esprit de l’Eternel te transportera je ne sais où ; moi, j’irai t’annoncer à Achab, mais il ne te trouvera plus et c’est moi qu’il tuera. Pourtant, rappelle-toi que ton serviteur craint l’Eternel depuis sa jeunesse. 13 Mon seigneur, n’as-tu pas appris ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel massacrait les prophètes de l’Eternel ? J’en ai caché cent en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et je leur ai fourni à manger et à boire. 14 Et c’est moi que tu envoies maintenant à mon seigneur pour lui annoncer que tu viens. Mais il va me tuer !
15 Elie lui dit : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes, au service duquel je me tiens, est vivant, je t’assure que je me présenterai aujourd’hui même devant Achab.
16 Abdias courut donc rejoindre Achab et lui annonça la chose. Alors Achab vint à la rencontre d’Elie. 17 Lorsqu’il l’aperçut, il lui cria : Te voilà, toi qui sèmes le malheur en Israël !
18 Elie lui répondit : Ce n’est pas moi qui sème le malheur en Israël, mais c’est toi et la famille de ton père, puisque vous avez refusé d’obéir aux commandements de l’Eternel, et que tu t’es rallié au culte des dieux Baals. 19 Maintenant, convoque tout Israël en ma présence sur le mont Carmel[a]. Tu y rassembleras aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes de la déesse Ashéra qui sont tous entretenus par la reine Jézabel.
20 Achab envoya des messagers à tous les Israélites et il rassembla les prophètes sur le mont Carmel. 21 Alors Elie s’avança devant tout le peuple et s’écria : Combien de temps encore sauterez-vous des deux côtés ? Si l’Eternel est le vrai Dieu, suivez-le. Si c’est Baal, alors ralliez-vous à lui !
Mais le peuple ne lui répondit pas un mot.
22 Elie poursuivit : Je suis le seul prophète de l’Eternel qui reste et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal. 23 Qu’on nous amène deux taureaux ; qu’ils choisissent pour eux l’un d’eux, qu’ils le découpent et qu’ils en disposent les morceaux sur le bois, mais sans y allumer de feu. Je ferai de même avec l’autre taureau : je le placerai sur le bois et je n’y mettrai pas le feu. 24 Puis vous invoquerez votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai l’Eternel. Le dieu qui répondra en faisant descendre le feu, c’est celui-là qui est Dieu[b].
Tout le peuple répondit : D’accord ! C’est bien !
25 Elie se tourna vers les prophètes de Baal et leur dit : Choisissez pour vous l’un des taureaux et préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux ; puis invoquez votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu au bois.
26 On leur donna le taureau et ils le prirent et le préparèrent. Puis ils invoquèrent Baal, du matin jusqu’à midi, en répétant : O Baal, réponds-nous !
Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Ils sautaient autour de l’autel qu’ils avaient dressé.
27 Vers midi, Elie se moqua d’eux et leur dit : Criez plus fort ! Puisqu’il est dieu, il doit être plongé dans ses réflexions, ou il a dû s’absenter, ou bien il est en voyage ! Ou peut-être dort-il et faut-il le réveiller.
28 Les prophètes crièrent à tue-tête et se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions dans la peau à coups d’épées et de lances jusqu’à ce que le sang ruisselle sur leur corps. 29 L’heure de midi était passée et ils demeurèrent encore dans un état d’exaltation jusqu’au moment de l’offrande du soir. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni aucune réaction.
30 Alors Elie ordonna à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi !
Tout le peuple avança vers lui. Elie rétablit l’autel de l’Eternel qui avait été démoli. 31 A cet effet, il prit douze pierres, une pour chacune des tribus des descendants de Jacob, à qui l’Eternel avait déclaré : « Tu t’appelleras Israël[c]. » 32 Il rebâtit avec ces pierres un autel dédié à l’Eternel. Autour, il creusa une rigole capable de contenir une trentaine de litres. 33 Puis il disposa des bûches de bois sur l’autel, dépeça le taureau, plaça les morceaux de viande sur le bois 34 et ordonna : Remplissez quatre cruches d’eau et répandez-la sur l’holocauste et sur le bois.
On fit ainsi.
– Faites-le encore une fois, ordonna-t-il.
Ils le firent.
– Une troisième fois !
Et ils le firent une troisième fois. 35 L’eau se répandit autour de l’autel et remplit la rigole.
36 A l’heure habituelle de l’offrande du soir, le prophète Elie s’approcha de l’autel et pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que c’est toi qui es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur et que j’ai fait tout cela sur ton ordre ! 37 Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple sache que c’est toi, Eternel, qui es le vrai Dieu, et que c’est toi qui veux ramener leurs cœurs à toi comme autrefois.
38 Le feu de l’Eternel tomba du ciel, et consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il réduisit en vapeur l’eau de la rigole. 39 Quand le peuple vit cela, tous tombèrent le visage contre terre en s’écriant : C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu ! C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu !
40 Elie leur ordonna : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, qu’aucun d’eux ne s’échappe !
Ils se saisirent d’eux. Elie les fit descendre dans le ravin du Qishôn[d] pour les y égorger.
41 Ensuite, Elie dit à Achab : Allez, va manger et boire, car j’entends le grondement qui annonce l’averse.
42 Achab alla manger et boire, tandis qu’Elie montait vers le sommet du mont Carmel où il se prosterna jusqu’à terre, le visage entre les genoux[e]. 43 Il dit à son jeune serviteur : Monte plus haut et regarde du côté de la mer[f].
Celui-ci monta, scruta l’horizon et revint dire : Je ne vois rien.
Elie l’envoya sept fois pour regarder. 44 A la septième fois, le serviteur annonça : Je vois venir un petit nuage qui s’élève de la mer, il n’est pas plus grand que la main d’un homme.
Alors Elie lui ordonna : Va dire à Achab : « Dépêche-toi d’atteler ton char et de rentrer chez toi, sinon la pluie te bloquera[g]. »
45 Déjà, de tous côtés, le ciel s’obscurcissait d’épais nuages poussés par un vent de tempête. Soudain, une pluie torrentielle se mit à tomber. Achab monta sur son char et partit pour Jizréel[h]. 46 Rempli de force par l’Eternel, Elie serra sa ceinture autour des reins et courut devant le char du roi Achab jusqu’à l’entrée de Jizréel[i].
18 After a long time, in the third(A) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(B) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(C) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(D) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(E) (Obadiah was a devout believer(F) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(G) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(H) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(I) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(J) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(K) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(L) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(M) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(N) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(O) myself to Ahab today.”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(P) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(Q) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(R) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(S) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(T) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(U)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(V) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(W) between two opinions? If the Lord(X) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(Y) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(Z) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AA) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AB) The god who answers by fire(AC)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AD) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AE) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AF) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AG) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AH) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(AI)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(AJ) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(AK) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(AL) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged(AM) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(AN) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(AO) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(AP) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(AQ) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(AR) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(AS) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(AT) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(AU)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(AV) and slaughtered(AW) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(AX)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(AY) the servant reported, “A cloud(AZ) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BA) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BB) 46 The power(BC) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BD) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
18 Trong năm thứ ba của nạn hạn hán, CHÚA phán cùng Ê-li rằng: “Hãy đi gặp vua A-háp vì ta sắp cho mưa xuống.” 2 Vậy Ê-li đi gặp A-háp.
Đến lúc đó không có thực phẩm trong Xa-ma-ri. 3 Vua A-háp sai gọi Áp-đia, quản lý cung vua. Áp-đia là người theo CHÚA thật lòng. 4 Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các nhà tiên tri của CHÚA thì Áp-đia giấu một trăm tiên tri trong hai hang đá, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Ông mang thức ăn và nước uống cho họ. 5 A-háp bảo Áp-đia, “Hãy đi xem xét mọi suối và thung lũng trong xứ. Biết đâu chúng ta tìm được cỏ để nuôi sống ngựa và la để chúng ta khỏi phải giết chúng nó.” 6 Cho nên mỗi người chọn một vùng trong xứ để đi lùng; A-háp đi một phía, còn Áp-đia đi phía khác. 7 Trong khi Áp-đia đang đi đường thì Ê-li gặp ông. Áp-đia nhận ra Ê-li nên cúi rạp xuống đất và thưa, “Thầy có phải là Ê-li không?”
8 Ê-li trả lời, “Phải. Hãy đi bảo chủ ngươi rằng ta đang ở đây.”
9 Áp-đia thưa, “Tôi có làm gì quấy mà ông trao mạng tôi cho vua A-háp? Vua sẽ giết tôi.
10 Tôi thề trong danh CHÚA là Thượng Đế hằng sống của ông rằng vua đã sai người đi lùng kiếm ông khắp mọi dân, mọi nước. Nếu quan cai trị vùng nào nói ông không có ở đó thì A-háp buộc quan ấy phải thề rằng đúng ông không có trong xứ ấy. 11 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi nói với chủ tôi rằng, ‘Ê-li đang ở đây.’ 12 Rồi lỡ Thần Linh của CHÚA mang ông đi nơi khác sau khi tôi rời ông thì sao? Nếu tôi đi bảo A-háp rằng ông ở đây mà vua đến không gặp ông thì mạng tôi sẽ không còn! Tôi đã theo CHÚA từ khi còn nhỏ. 13 Không có ai thuật cho ông nghe điều tôi đã làm sao? Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các tiên tri của CHÚA thì tôi mang họ đi giấu trong hai cái hang, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Tôi mang thức ăn và nước nuôi họ. 14 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi bảo chủ tôi rằng ông ở đây. Chắc chắn vua sẽ giết tôi!”
15 Ê-li đáp, “Ta chỉ CHÚA vạn quân, Đấng ta phục vụ rằng hôm nay ta sẽ ra mắt A-háp.”
16 Vậy Áp-đia đi gặp A-háp và cho biết chỗ Ê-li đang ở. A-háp liền đi gặp Ê-li.
17 Khi vua thấy Ê-li liền hỏi, “Có phải anh là tay quấy rối trong Ít-ra-en không?”
18 Ê-li đáp, “Tôi không gây rối trong Ít-ra-en. Chính bệ hạ và nhà cha bệ hạ mới gây rối vì không vâng theo mệnh lệnh CHÚA. Vua đã đi theo Ba-anh. 19 Bây giờ xin bảo tất cả dân Ít-ra-en gặp tôi trên núi Cạt-mên. Bệ hạ cũng hãy mang đến bốn trăm năm mươi tiên tri của Ba-anh và bốn trăm tiên tri của A-sê-ra là những người ăn chung bàn với Giê-xa-bên.” [a]
20 Vậy A-háp triệu tập tất cả dân Ít-ra-en và các tiên tri đó đến núi Cạt-mên. 21 Ê-li đến gần dân chúng và bảo, “Các ngươi đi hàng hai cho đến bao giờ? Nếu CHÚA là Thượng Đế thật, hãy theo Ngài. Nhưng nếu Ba-anh là Thượng Đế thật thì hãy theo hắn đi!”
Nhưng dân chúng làm thinh. 22 Ê-li nói, “Ta là nhà tiên tri duy nhất của CHÚA ở đây, còn số tiên tri của Ba-anh là bốn trăm năm mươi người. 23 Hãy mang hai con bò đực. Các tiên tri Ba-anh hãy chọn một con, giết nó và sả thịt ra. Họ phải chất thịt lên củi nhưng không được châm lửa. Ta sẽ làm con bò kia, chất thịt trên củi và cũng không châm lửa. 24 Tiên tri Ba-anh của các ngươi sẽ khẩn cầu cùng thần mình, còn ta sẽ khẩn cầu cùng CHÚA. Thần nào trả lời bằng cách làm cho củi cháy lên là Thượng Đế thật.”
Tất cả dân chúng đồng ý.
25 Ê-li liền bảo các nhà tiên tri Ba-anh, “Mấy anh đông cho nên làm trước đi. Hãy chọn một con bò rồi làm thịt. Hãy cầu nguyện thần của mấy anh, nhưng không được châm lửa.”
26 Vậy chúng bắt con bò và làm thịt. Chúng cầu nguyện với Ba-anh từ sáng đến trưa, kêu la lên, “Ba-anh ơi, xin đáp lời chúng tôi!” Nhưng chẳng thấy động tĩnh gì cũng không thấy ai trả lời. Chúng nhảy múa quanh bàn thờ chúng đã dựng lên.
27 Đến trưa Ê-li chế giễu chúng rằng, “Hãy cầu nguyện lớn lên nữa đi. Nếu Ba-anh là thần chắc ông ta đang suy nghĩ, bận việc, hay đang đi ngao du! Có thể ông ta đang ngủ cũng chưa biết chừng cho nên mấy anh phải đánh thức ông ta dậy mới được!” 28 Các nhà tiên tri cầu nguyện lớn tiếng hơn nữa, chúng lấy gươm và giáo cắt thịt mình đến nỗi máu chảy ra, vì đó là lối chúng thờ phụng. 29 Đến quá xế trưa mà chúng vẫn làm như thế cho tới giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều. Nhưng không nghe động tĩnh gì. Ba-anh không trả lời, chẳng ai ngó ngàng tới.
30 Sau đó Ê-li gọi toàn dân, “Bây giờ các ngươi hãy lại đây.” Vậy họ tụ tập quanh ông rồi Ê-li xây sửa lại bàn thờ của CHÚA đã bị phá sập. 31 Ông lấy mười hai tảng đá đại diện cho mười hai chi tộc, tức số con trai Gia-cốp. (CHÚA đã đổi tên Gia-cốp ra Ít-ra-en.) 32 Ê-li dùng các tảng đá đó xây lại bàn thờ để tôn kính CHÚA. Rồi ông đào một cái rãnh xung quanh bàn thờ lớn đủ chứa được khoảng mười bốn lít hột giống [b]. 33 Ê-li chất củi lên bàn thờ, sả con bò ra từng miếng rồi đặt các miếng đó lên củi. 34 Rồi ông bảo, “Lấy bốn vò đựng đầy nước đổ lên thịt và củi.” Ông bảo tiếp, “Làm một lần nữa,” thì họ làm lần nữa. Ông bảo, “Làm lần thứ ba,” thì họ làm lần thứ ba. 35 Nước tràn xuống từ bàn thờ và chảy đầy rãnh.
36 Đến giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều, tiên tri Ê-li đến gần bàn thờ. Ông cầu nguyện, “Lạy Chúa, Ngài là Thượng Đế của Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác, và Ít-ra-en. Xin chứng tỏ cho mọi người thấy Ngài là Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en và tôi là tôi tớ Ngài. Xin hãy cho dân nầy thấy rằng chính Ngài đã truyền lệnh cho tôi làm những điều nầy. 37 Lạy CHÚA, xin đáp lời cầu nguyện của tôi để dân nầy biết rằng Ngài là CHÚA và là Thượng Đế để khiến họ đổi lòng.”
38 Lửa từ CHÚA loè xuống thiêu đốt sinh tế, củi, đá, và đất xung quanh bàn thờ đồng thời làm cạn khô hết nước trong rãnh. 39 Khi toàn thể dân chúng thấy vậy, họ đều sấp mặt xuống đất kêu lên, “CHÚA là Thượng Đế! CHÚA là Thượng Đế!”
40 Ê-li liền ra lệnh, “Hãy bắt hết các nhà tiên tri của Ba-anh! Đừng để ai trốn thoát!” Dân chúng bắt tất cả các nhà tiên tri. Rồi Ê-li dắt họ xuống thung lũng Ki-sôn và giết họ tại đó.
41 Sau đó Ê-li bảo A-háp, “Bây giờ vua hãy đi, ăn và uống vì mưa lớn sắp đổ xuống.” 42 Vậy vua A-háp đi ăn uống. Trong lúc ấy Ê-li lên đỉnh núi Cạt-mên cúi xuống đất gục đầu giữa hai đầu gối. 43 Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi nhìn về phía biển.”
Đứa đầy tớ đi nhìn rồi trình, “Tôi chẳng thấy gì cả.” Ê-li bảo nó đi nhìn lại lần nữa. Nó làm như thế bảy lần. 44 Đến lần thứ bảy, đầy tớ trình, “Tôi thấy có một đám mây nhỏ cỡ bằng nắm tay nhô lên từ dưới biển.”
Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi bảo A-háp chuẩn bị quân xa sẵn sàng để đi về nhà ngay bây giờ. Nếu không mưa sẽ giữ ông lại.”
45 Ít lâu sau trời phủ mây đen kịt. Gió bắt đầu thổi và trong chốc lát mưa lớn đổ xuống. A-háp liền leo lên quân xa đi về Ghít-rê-ên. 46 CHÚA ban sức mạnh cho Ê-li. Ông buộc áo quần ngang hông và chạy bộ trước A-háp cho đến Ghít-rê-ên.
18 Bien des jours s’écoulèrent. Au cours de la troisième année de sécheresse, l’Eternel adressa la parole à Elie en ces termes : Va trouver Achab, et je ferai pleuvoir sur ce pays.
2 Elie partit afin de rencontrer Achab.
Comme la famine s’était aggravée à Samarie, 3 Achab avait convoqué Abdias, l’intendant de son palais. Celui-ci craignait l’Eternel : 4 lorsque la reine Jézabel avait voulu exterminer tous les prophètes de l’Eternel, Abdias avait sauvé cent d’entre eux en les cachant en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et en leur procurant à manger et à boire. 5 Achab avait ordonné à Abdias : Va, parcours le pays à la recherche de toute source d’eau et de tout fond de torrent ; peut-être découvrirons-nous assez d’herbe pour maintenir en vie nos chevaux et nos mulets sans être obligés d’abattre une partie de notre bétail.
6 Ils se répartirent le pays à parcourir. Achab partit seul de son côté, et Abdias prit une autre direction.
7 Alors qu’Abdias était en chemin, Elie arriva à sa rencontre. Abdias le reconnut et s’inclina face contre terre devant lui en demandant : Est-ce bien toi, mon seigneur Elie ?
8 – C’est moi-même, lui répondit-il. Va dire à ton maître que j’arrive.
9 – Oh ! répliqua Abdias, par quel péché ai-je mérité que tu me fasses mettre à mort par la main d’Achab ? 10 Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, je t’assure qu’il n’y a pas un peuple ni un royaume où mon maître ne t’ait pas fait chercher ; et quand les représentants de ces pays disaient que tu n’étais pas chez eux, il les faisait jurer qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé. 11 Et maintenant, tu me demandes d’aller annoncer à mon seigneur que tu arrives. 12 Mais, à peine t’aurai-je quitté que l’Esprit de l’Eternel te transportera je ne sais où ; moi, j’irai t’annoncer à Achab, mais il ne te trouvera plus et c’est moi qu’il tuera. Pourtant, rappelle-toi que ton serviteur craint l’Eternel depuis sa jeunesse. 13 Mon seigneur, n’as-tu pas appris ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel massacrait les prophètes de l’Eternel ? J’en ai caché cent en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et je leur ai fourni à manger et à boire. 14 Et c’est moi que tu envoies maintenant à mon seigneur pour lui annoncer que tu viens. Mais il va me tuer !
15 Elie lui dit : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes, au service duquel je me tiens, est vivant, je t’assure que je me présenterai aujourd’hui même devant Achab.
16 Abdias courut donc rejoindre Achab et lui annonça la chose. Alors Achab vint à la rencontre d’Elie. 17 Lorsqu’il l’aperçut, il lui cria : Te voilà, toi qui sèmes le malheur en Israël !
18 Elie lui répondit : Ce n’est pas moi qui sème le malheur en Israël, mais c’est toi et la famille de ton père, puisque vous avez refusé d’obéir aux commandements de l’Eternel, et que tu t’es rallié au culte des dieux Baals. 19 Maintenant, convoque tout Israël en ma présence sur le mont Carmel[a]. Tu y rassembleras aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes de la déesse Ashéra qui sont tous entretenus par la reine Jézabel.
20 Achab envoya des messagers à tous les Israélites et il rassembla les prophètes sur le mont Carmel. 21 Alors Elie s’avança devant tout le peuple et s’écria : Combien de temps encore sauterez-vous des deux côtés ? Si l’Eternel est le vrai Dieu, suivez-le. Si c’est Baal, alors ralliez-vous à lui !
Mais le peuple ne lui répondit pas un mot.
22 Elie poursuivit : Je suis le seul prophète de l’Eternel qui reste et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal. 23 Qu’on nous amène deux taureaux ; qu’ils choisissent pour eux l’un d’eux, qu’ils le découpent et qu’ils en disposent les morceaux sur le bois, mais sans y allumer de feu. Je ferai de même avec l’autre taureau : je le placerai sur le bois et je n’y mettrai pas le feu. 24 Puis vous invoquerez votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai l’Eternel. Le dieu qui répondra en faisant descendre le feu, c’est celui-là qui est Dieu[b].
Tout le peuple répondit : D’accord ! C’est bien !
25 Elie se tourna vers les prophètes de Baal et leur dit : Choisissez pour vous l’un des taureaux et préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux ; puis invoquez votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu au bois.
26 On leur donna le taureau et ils le prirent et le préparèrent. Puis ils invoquèrent Baal, du matin jusqu’à midi, en répétant : O Baal, réponds-nous !
Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Ils sautaient autour de l’autel qu’ils avaient dressé.
27 Vers midi, Elie se moqua d’eux et leur dit : Criez plus fort ! Puisqu’il est dieu, il doit être plongé dans ses réflexions, ou il a dû s’absenter, ou bien il est en voyage ! Ou peut-être dort-il et faut-il le réveiller.
28 Les prophètes crièrent à tue-tête et se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions dans la peau à coups d’épées et de lances jusqu’à ce que le sang ruisselle sur leur corps. 29 L’heure de midi était passée et ils demeurèrent encore dans un état d’exaltation jusqu’au moment de l’offrande du soir. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni aucune réaction.
30 Alors Elie ordonna à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi !
Tout le peuple avança vers lui. Elie rétablit l’autel de l’Eternel qui avait été démoli. 31 A cet effet, il prit douze pierres, une pour chacune des tribus des descendants de Jacob, à qui l’Eternel avait déclaré : « Tu t’appelleras Israël[c]. » 32 Il rebâtit avec ces pierres un autel dédié à l’Eternel. Autour, il creusa une rigole capable de contenir une trentaine de litres. 33 Puis il disposa des bûches de bois sur l’autel, dépeça le taureau, plaça les morceaux de viande sur le bois 34 et ordonna : Remplissez quatre cruches d’eau et répandez-la sur l’holocauste et sur le bois.
On fit ainsi.
– Faites-le encore une fois, ordonna-t-il.
Ils le firent.
– Une troisième fois !
Et ils le firent une troisième fois. 35 L’eau se répandit autour de l’autel et remplit la rigole.
36 A l’heure habituelle de l’offrande du soir, le prophète Elie s’approcha de l’autel et pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que c’est toi qui es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur et que j’ai fait tout cela sur ton ordre ! 37 Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple sache que c’est toi, Eternel, qui es le vrai Dieu, et que c’est toi qui veux ramener leurs cœurs à toi comme autrefois.
38 Le feu de l’Eternel tomba du ciel, et consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il réduisit en vapeur l’eau de la rigole. 39 Quand le peuple vit cela, tous tombèrent le visage contre terre en s’écriant : C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu ! C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu !
40 Elie leur ordonna : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, qu’aucun d’eux ne s’échappe !
Ils se saisirent d’eux. Elie les fit descendre dans le ravin du Qishôn[d] pour les y égorger.
41 Ensuite, Elie dit à Achab : Allez, va manger et boire, car j’entends le grondement qui annonce l’averse.
42 Achab alla manger et boire, tandis qu’Elie montait vers le sommet du mont Carmel où il se prosterna jusqu’à terre, le visage entre les genoux[e]. 43 Il dit à son jeune serviteur : Monte plus haut et regarde du côté de la mer[f].
Celui-ci monta, scruta l’horizon et revint dire : Je ne vois rien.
Elie l’envoya sept fois pour regarder. 44 A la septième fois, le serviteur annonça : Je vois venir un petit nuage qui s’élève de la mer, il n’est pas plus grand que la main d’un homme.
Alors Elie lui ordonna : Va dire à Achab : « Dépêche-toi d’atteler ton char et de rentrer chez toi, sinon la pluie te bloquera[g]. »
45 Déjà, de tous côtés, le ciel s’obscurcissait d’épais nuages poussés par un vent de tempête. Soudain, une pluie torrentielle se mit à tomber. Achab monta sur son char et partit pour Jizréel[h]. 46 Rempli de force par l’Eternel, Elie serra sa ceinture autour des reins et courut devant le char du roi Achab jusqu’à l’entrée de Jizréel[i].
18 After a long time, in the third(A) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(B) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(C) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(D) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(E) (Obadiah was a devout believer(F) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(G) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(H) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(I) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(J) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(K) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(L) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(M) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(N) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(O) myself to Ahab today.”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(P) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(Q) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(R) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(S) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(T) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(U)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(V) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(W) between two opinions? If the Lord(X) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(Y) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(Z) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AA) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AB) The god who answers by fire(AC)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AD) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AE) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AF) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AG) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AH) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(AI)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(AJ) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(AK) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(AL) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged(AM) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(AN) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(AO) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(AP) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(AQ) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(AR) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(AS) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(AT) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(AU)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(AV) and slaughtered(AW) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(AX)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(AY) the servant reported, “A cloud(AZ) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BA) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BB) 46 The power(BC) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BD) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
18 Trong năm thứ ba của nạn hạn hán, CHÚA phán cùng Ê-li rằng: “Hãy đi gặp vua A-háp vì ta sắp cho mưa xuống.” 2 Vậy Ê-li đi gặp A-háp.
Đến lúc đó không có thực phẩm trong Xa-ma-ri. 3 Vua A-háp sai gọi Áp-đia, quản lý cung vua. Áp-đia là người theo CHÚA thật lòng. 4 Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các nhà tiên tri của CHÚA thì Áp-đia giấu một trăm tiên tri trong hai hang đá, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Ông mang thức ăn và nước uống cho họ. 5 A-háp bảo Áp-đia, “Hãy đi xem xét mọi suối và thung lũng trong xứ. Biết đâu chúng ta tìm được cỏ để nuôi sống ngựa và la để chúng ta khỏi phải giết chúng nó.” 6 Cho nên mỗi người chọn một vùng trong xứ để đi lùng; A-háp đi một phía, còn Áp-đia đi phía khác. 7 Trong khi Áp-đia đang đi đường thì Ê-li gặp ông. Áp-đia nhận ra Ê-li nên cúi rạp xuống đất và thưa, “Thầy có phải là Ê-li không?”
8 Ê-li trả lời, “Phải. Hãy đi bảo chủ ngươi rằng ta đang ở đây.”
9 Áp-đia thưa, “Tôi có làm gì quấy mà ông trao mạng tôi cho vua A-háp? Vua sẽ giết tôi.
10 Tôi thề trong danh CHÚA là Thượng Đế hằng sống của ông rằng vua đã sai người đi lùng kiếm ông khắp mọi dân, mọi nước. Nếu quan cai trị vùng nào nói ông không có ở đó thì A-háp buộc quan ấy phải thề rằng đúng ông không có trong xứ ấy. 11 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi nói với chủ tôi rằng, ‘Ê-li đang ở đây.’ 12 Rồi lỡ Thần Linh của CHÚA mang ông đi nơi khác sau khi tôi rời ông thì sao? Nếu tôi đi bảo A-háp rằng ông ở đây mà vua đến không gặp ông thì mạng tôi sẽ không còn! Tôi đã theo CHÚA từ khi còn nhỏ. 13 Không có ai thuật cho ông nghe điều tôi đã làm sao? Khi Giê-xa-bên giết các tiên tri của CHÚA thì tôi mang họ đi giấu trong hai cái hang, mỗi hang năm mươi người. Tôi mang thức ăn và nước nuôi họ. 14 Bây giờ ông muốn tôi đi bảo chủ tôi rằng ông ở đây. Chắc chắn vua sẽ giết tôi!”
15 Ê-li đáp, “Ta chỉ CHÚA vạn quân, Đấng ta phục vụ rằng hôm nay ta sẽ ra mắt A-háp.”
16 Vậy Áp-đia đi gặp A-háp và cho biết chỗ Ê-li đang ở. A-háp liền đi gặp Ê-li.
17 Khi vua thấy Ê-li liền hỏi, “Có phải anh là tay quấy rối trong Ít-ra-en không?”
18 Ê-li đáp, “Tôi không gây rối trong Ít-ra-en. Chính bệ hạ và nhà cha bệ hạ mới gây rối vì không vâng theo mệnh lệnh CHÚA. Vua đã đi theo Ba-anh. 19 Bây giờ xin bảo tất cả dân Ít-ra-en gặp tôi trên núi Cạt-mên. Bệ hạ cũng hãy mang đến bốn trăm năm mươi tiên tri của Ba-anh và bốn trăm tiên tri của A-sê-ra là những người ăn chung bàn với Giê-xa-bên.” [a]
20 Vậy A-háp triệu tập tất cả dân Ít-ra-en và các tiên tri đó đến núi Cạt-mên. 21 Ê-li đến gần dân chúng và bảo, “Các ngươi đi hàng hai cho đến bao giờ? Nếu CHÚA là Thượng Đế thật, hãy theo Ngài. Nhưng nếu Ba-anh là Thượng Đế thật thì hãy theo hắn đi!”
Nhưng dân chúng làm thinh. 22 Ê-li nói, “Ta là nhà tiên tri duy nhất của CHÚA ở đây, còn số tiên tri của Ba-anh là bốn trăm năm mươi người. 23 Hãy mang hai con bò đực. Các tiên tri Ba-anh hãy chọn một con, giết nó và sả thịt ra. Họ phải chất thịt lên củi nhưng không được châm lửa. Ta sẽ làm con bò kia, chất thịt trên củi và cũng không châm lửa. 24 Tiên tri Ba-anh của các ngươi sẽ khẩn cầu cùng thần mình, còn ta sẽ khẩn cầu cùng CHÚA. Thần nào trả lời bằng cách làm cho củi cháy lên là Thượng Đế thật.”
Tất cả dân chúng đồng ý.
25 Ê-li liền bảo các nhà tiên tri Ba-anh, “Mấy anh đông cho nên làm trước đi. Hãy chọn một con bò rồi làm thịt. Hãy cầu nguyện thần của mấy anh, nhưng không được châm lửa.”
26 Vậy chúng bắt con bò và làm thịt. Chúng cầu nguyện với Ba-anh từ sáng đến trưa, kêu la lên, “Ba-anh ơi, xin đáp lời chúng tôi!” Nhưng chẳng thấy động tĩnh gì cũng không thấy ai trả lời. Chúng nhảy múa quanh bàn thờ chúng đã dựng lên.
27 Đến trưa Ê-li chế giễu chúng rằng, “Hãy cầu nguyện lớn lên nữa đi. Nếu Ba-anh là thần chắc ông ta đang suy nghĩ, bận việc, hay đang đi ngao du! Có thể ông ta đang ngủ cũng chưa biết chừng cho nên mấy anh phải đánh thức ông ta dậy mới được!” 28 Các nhà tiên tri cầu nguyện lớn tiếng hơn nữa, chúng lấy gươm và giáo cắt thịt mình đến nỗi máu chảy ra, vì đó là lối chúng thờ phụng. 29 Đến quá xế trưa mà chúng vẫn làm như thế cho tới giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều. Nhưng không nghe động tĩnh gì. Ba-anh không trả lời, chẳng ai ngó ngàng tới.
30 Sau đó Ê-li gọi toàn dân, “Bây giờ các ngươi hãy lại đây.” Vậy họ tụ tập quanh ông rồi Ê-li xây sửa lại bàn thờ của CHÚA đã bị phá sập. 31 Ông lấy mười hai tảng đá đại diện cho mười hai chi tộc, tức số con trai Gia-cốp. (CHÚA đã đổi tên Gia-cốp ra Ít-ra-en.) 32 Ê-li dùng các tảng đá đó xây lại bàn thờ để tôn kính CHÚA. Rồi ông đào một cái rãnh xung quanh bàn thờ lớn đủ chứa được khoảng mười bốn lít hột giống [b]. 33 Ê-li chất củi lên bàn thờ, sả con bò ra từng miếng rồi đặt các miếng đó lên củi. 34 Rồi ông bảo, “Lấy bốn vò đựng đầy nước đổ lên thịt và củi.” Ông bảo tiếp, “Làm một lần nữa,” thì họ làm lần nữa. Ông bảo, “Làm lần thứ ba,” thì họ làm lần thứ ba. 35 Nước tràn xuống từ bàn thờ và chảy đầy rãnh.
36 Đến giờ dâng của lễ buổi chiều, tiên tri Ê-li đến gần bàn thờ. Ông cầu nguyện, “Lạy Chúa, Ngài là Thượng Đế của Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác, và Ít-ra-en. Xin chứng tỏ cho mọi người thấy Ngài là Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en và tôi là tôi tớ Ngài. Xin hãy cho dân nầy thấy rằng chính Ngài đã truyền lệnh cho tôi làm những điều nầy. 37 Lạy CHÚA, xin đáp lời cầu nguyện của tôi để dân nầy biết rằng Ngài là CHÚA và là Thượng Đế để khiến họ đổi lòng.”
38 Lửa từ CHÚA loè xuống thiêu đốt sinh tế, củi, đá, và đất xung quanh bàn thờ đồng thời làm cạn khô hết nước trong rãnh. 39 Khi toàn thể dân chúng thấy vậy, họ đều sấp mặt xuống đất kêu lên, “CHÚA là Thượng Đế! CHÚA là Thượng Đế!”
40 Ê-li liền ra lệnh, “Hãy bắt hết các nhà tiên tri của Ba-anh! Đừng để ai trốn thoát!” Dân chúng bắt tất cả các nhà tiên tri. Rồi Ê-li dắt họ xuống thung lũng Ki-sôn và giết họ tại đó.
41 Sau đó Ê-li bảo A-háp, “Bây giờ vua hãy đi, ăn và uống vì mưa lớn sắp đổ xuống.” 42 Vậy vua A-háp đi ăn uống. Trong lúc ấy Ê-li lên đỉnh núi Cạt-mên cúi xuống đất gục đầu giữa hai đầu gối. 43 Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi nhìn về phía biển.”
Đứa đầy tớ đi nhìn rồi trình, “Tôi chẳng thấy gì cả.” Ê-li bảo nó đi nhìn lại lần nữa. Nó làm như thế bảy lần. 44 Đến lần thứ bảy, đầy tớ trình, “Tôi thấy có một đám mây nhỏ cỡ bằng nắm tay nhô lên từ dưới biển.”
Ê-li bảo đầy tớ, “Hãy đi bảo A-háp chuẩn bị quân xa sẵn sàng để đi về nhà ngay bây giờ. Nếu không mưa sẽ giữ ông lại.”
45 Ít lâu sau trời phủ mây đen kịt. Gió bắt đầu thổi và trong chốc lát mưa lớn đổ xuống. A-háp liền leo lên quân xa đi về Ghít-rê-ên. 46 CHÚA ban sức mạnh cho Ê-li. Ông buộc áo quần ngang hông và chạy bộ trước A-háp cho đến Ghít-rê-ên.
18 Bien des jours s’écoulèrent. Au cours de la troisième année de sécheresse, l’Eternel adressa la parole à Elie en ces termes : Va trouver Achab, et je ferai pleuvoir sur ce pays.
2 Elie partit afin de rencontrer Achab.
Comme la famine s’était aggravée à Samarie, 3 Achab avait convoqué Abdias, l’intendant de son palais. Celui-ci craignait l’Eternel : 4 lorsque la reine Jézabel avait voulu exterminer tous les prophètes de l’Eternel, Abdias avait sauvé cent d’entre eux en les cachant en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et en leur procurant à manger et à boire. 5 Achab avait ordonné à Abdias : Va, parcours le pays à la recherche de toute source d’eau et de tout fond de torrent ; peut-être découvrirons-nous assez d’herbe pour maintenir en vie nos chevaux et nos mulets sans être obligés d’abattre une partie de notre bétail.
6 Ils se répartirent le pays à parcourir. Achab partit seul de son côté, et Abdias prit une autre direction.
7 Alors qu’Abdias était en chemin, Elie arriva à sa rencontre. Abdias le reconnut et s’inclina face contre terre devant lui en demandant : Est-ce bien toi, mon seigneur Elie ?
8 – C’est moi-même, lui répondit-il. Va dire à ton maître que j’arrive.
9 – Oh ! répliqua Abdias, par quel péché ai-je mérité que tu me fasses mettre à mort par la main d’Achab ? 10 Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, je t’assure qu’il n’y a pas un peuple ni un royaume où mon maître ne t’ait pas fait chercher ; et quand les représentants de ces pays disaient que tu n’étais pas chez eux, il les faisait jurer qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé. 11 Et maintenant, tu me demandes d’aller annoncer à mon seigneur que tu arrives. 12 Mais, à peine t’aurai-je quitté que l’Esprit de l’Eternel te transportera je ne sais où ; moi, j’irai t’annoncer à Achab, mais il ne te trouvera plus et c’est moi qu’il tuera. Pourtant, rappelle-toi que ton serviteur craint l’Eternel depuis sa jeunesse. 13 Mon seigneur, n’as-tu pas appris ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel massacrait les prophètes de l’Eternel ? J’en ai caché cent en deux groupes de cinquante dans des grottes et je leur ai fourni à manger et à boire. 14 Et c’est moi que tu envoies maintenant à mon seigneur pour lui annoncer que tu viens. Mais il va me tuer !
15 Elie lui dit : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes, au service duquel je me tiens, est vivant, je t’assure que je me présenterai aujourd’hui même devant Achab.
16 Abdias courut donc rejoindre Achab et lui annonça la chose. Alors Achab vint à la rencontre d’Elie. 17 Lorsqu’il l’aperçut, il lui cria : Te voilà, toi qui sèmes le malheur en Israël !
18 Elie lui répondit : Ce n’est pas moi qui sème le malheur en Israël, mais c’est toi et la famille de ton père, puisque vous avez refusé d’obéir aux commandements de l’Eternel, et que tu t’es rallié au culte des dieux Baals. 19 Maintenant, convoque tout Israël en ma présence sur le mont Carmel[a]. Tu y rassembleras aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes de la déesse Ashéra qui sont tous entretenus par la reine Jézabel.
20 Achab envoya des messagers à tous les Israélites et il rassembla les prophètes sur le mont Carmel. 21 Alors Elie s’avança devant tout le peuple et s’écria : Combien de temps encore sauterez-vous des deux côtés ? Si l’Eternel est le vrai Dieu, suivez-le. Si c’est Baal, alors ralliez-vous à lui !
Mais le peuple ne lui répondit pas un mot.
22 Elie poursuivit : Je suis le seul prophète de l’Eternel qui reste et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal. 23 Qu’on nous amène deux taureaux ; qu’ils choisissent pour eux l’un d’eux, qu’ils le découpent et qu’ils en disposent les morceaux sur le bois, mais sans y allumer de feu. Je ferai de même avec l’autre taureau : je le placerai sur le bois et je n’y mettrai pas le feu. 24 Puis vous invoquerez votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai l’Eternel. Le dieu qui répondra en faisant descendre le feu, c’est celui-là qui est Dieu[b].
Tout le peuple répondit : D’accord ! C’est bien !
25 Elie se tourna vers les prophètes de Baal et leur dit : Choisissez pour vous l’un des taureaux et préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux ; puis invoquez votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu au bois.
26 On leur donna le taureau et ils le prirent et le préparèrent. Puis ils invoquèrent Baal, du matin jusqu’à midi, en répétant : O Baal, réponds-nous !
Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Ils sautaient autour de l’autel qu’ils avaient dressé.
27 Vers midi, Elie se moqua d’eux et leur dit : Criez plus fort ! Puisqu’il est dieu, il doit être plongé dans ses réflexions, ou il a dû s’absenter, ou bien il est en voyage ! Ou peut-être dort-il et faut-il le réveiller.
28 Les prophètes crièrent à tue-tête et se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions dans la peau à coups d’épées et de lances jusqu’à ce que le sang ruisselle sur leur corps. 29 L’heure de midi était passée et ils demeurèrent encore dans un état d’exaltation jusqu’au moment de l’offrande du soir. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni aucune réaction.
30 Alors Elie ordonna à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi !
Tout le peuple avança vers lui. Elie rétablit l’autel de l’Eternel qui avait été démoli. 31 A cet effet, il prit douze pierres, une pour chacune des tribus des descendants de Jacob, à qui l’Eternel avait déclaré : « Tu t’appelleras Israël[c]. » 32 Il rebâtit avec ces pierres un autel dédié à l’Eternel. Autour, il creusa une rigole capable de contenir une trentaine de litres. 33 Puis il disposa des bûches de bois sur l’autel, dépeça le taureau, plaça les morceaux de viande sur le bois 34 et ordonna : Remplissez quatre cruches d’eau et répandez-la sur l’holocauste et sur le bois.
On fit ainsi.
– Faites-le encore une fois, ordonna-t-il.
Ils le firent.
– Une troisième fois !
Et ils le firent une troisième fois. 35 L’eau se répandit autour de l’autel et remplit la rigole.
36 A l’heure habituelle de l’offrande du soir, le prophète Elie s’approcha de l’autel et pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que c’est toi qui es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur et que j’ai fait tout cela sur ton ordre ! 37 Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple sache que c’est toi, Eternel, qui es le vrai Dieu, et que c’est toi qui veux ramener leurs cœurs à toi comme autrefois.
38 Le feu de l’Eternel tomba du ciel, et consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il réduisit en vapeur l’eau de la rigole. 39 Quand le peuple vit cela, tous tombèrent le visage contre terre en s’écriant : C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu ! C’est l’Eternel qui est Dieu !
40 Elie leur ordonna : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, qu’aucun d’eux ne s’échappe !
Ils se saisirent d’eux. Elie les fit descendre dans le ravin du Qishôn[d] pour les y égorger.
41 Ensuite, Elie dit à Achab : Allez, va manger et boire, car j’entends le grondement qui annonce l’averse.
42 Achab alla manger et boire, tandis qu’Elie montait vers le sommet du mont Carmel où il se prosterna jusqu’à terre, le visage entre les genoux[e]. 43 Il dit à son jeune serviteur : Monte plus haut et regarde du côté de la mer[f].
Celui-ci monta, scruta l’horizon et revint dire : Je ne vois rien.
Elie l’envoya sept fois pour regarder. 44 A la septième fois, le serviteur annonça : Je vois venir un petit nuage qui s’élève de la mer, il n’est pas plus grand que la main d’un homme.
Alors Elie lui ordonna : Va dire à Achab : « Dépêche-toi d’atteler ton char et de rentrer chez toi, sinon la pluie te bloquera[g]. »
45 Déjà, de tous côtés, le ciel s’obscurcissait d’épais nuages poussés par un vent de tempête. Soudain, une pluie torrentielle se mit à tomber. Achab monta sur son char et partit pour Jizréel[h]. 46 Rempli de force par l’Eternel, Elie serra sa ceinture autour des reins et courut devant le char du roi Achab jusqu’à l’entrée de Jizréel[i].
18 After a long time, in the third(A) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(B) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(C) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(D) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(E) (Obadiah was a devout believer(F) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(G) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(H) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(I) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(J) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(K) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(L) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(M) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(N) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(O) myself to Ahab today.”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(P) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(Q) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(R) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(S) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(T) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(U)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(V) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(W) between two opinions? If the Lord(X) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(Y) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(Z) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AA) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AB) The god who answers by fire(AC)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AD) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AE) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AF) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AG) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AH) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(AI)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(AJ) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(AK) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(AL) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged(AM) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(AN) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(AO) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(AP) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(AQ) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(AR) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(AS) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(AT) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(AU)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(AV) and slaughtered(AW) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(AX)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(AY) the servant reported, “A cloud(AZ) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BA) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BB) 46 The power(BC) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BD) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
