Introducing Bible Chapter Overviews From Bible Gateway

|

Since 1993, Bible Gateway has helped hundreds of millions of people around the world read, search, and explore Scripture. Through more than 200 Bible versions in over 70 languages, we continue to help make God’s Word accessible for daily reading. And with Bible Gateway Plus, we offer dozens of study resources to help readers at every experience level engage more deeply with Scripture, all for the cost of a single commentary.

Now, Bible Gateway offers another way to explore each chapter of the Bible: short, AI-generated overviews drawn exclusively from trusted resources, with every overview read and vetted by a trained evangelical pastor and theologian. These chapter overviews are available now, free to all Bible Gateway users.

At Bible Gateway, we believe artificial intelligence is a powerful tool — but it needs firm guardrails to ensure it remains accurate and credible. And never more so than when it comes to Holy Scripture.

That’s why we made these. With these overviews, we hope to offer another path for those who want to go deeper into God’s Word, but aren’t quite sure where to start.

What Are Bible Gateway’s Chapter Overviews?

Bible Gateway’s chapter overviews are brief study guides to every chapter of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Free to all Bible Gateway users, these overviews cover the main events or ideas, contextual background, and practical application of each chapter — all drawn exclusively from carefully vetted Bible Gateway Plus resources.

Although generated by artificial intelligence, these overviews have several crucial safeguards in place to ensure their accuracy and dependability:

  1. Each overview is fixed content prepared in advance. You won’t get a different overview each time you open it. It’s exactly the same for everyone.
  2. Aside from sticking to resources from Bible Gateway Plus, every single overview was reviewed and approved by a qualified evangelical pastor and theologian.
  3. Each statement contained in the overviews provides a direct citation to its original source, so you can follow the research, double-check the conclusion, and get a fuller picture of the context.

Which Resources Do Chapter Overviews Use?

Bible Gateway’s chapter overviews draw exclusively from five trusted study resources available in Bible Gateway Plus. Each resource brings a different perspective to your reading, from understanding a passage’s background to considering its application in daily life.

Here are the resources used in our chapter overviews, and the perspective they offer:

  • NIV Study Bible: General explanatory information and reflections.
  • NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible: Key theological takeaways and interpretation within the broader storyline of Scripture.
  • NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible: Historical and cultural context that illuminates biblical language and imagery.
  • NIV Application Bible: Connects the world of the Bible to your everyday life.
  • NIV Quest Study Bible: Succinct, straightforward answers to common questions.

All five of these sources are published by Zondervan, a leading evangelical publisher since 1931.

Within each overview, source citations show you where each statement comes from and give you a starting point for further study in the original resource. (Note: A Bible Gateway Plus subscription is needed for accessing the full study notes of each resource.)

Note that source selection varies by chapter; not every chapter cites all five.

Why Did Bible Gateway Make These Overviews?

We made these chapter overviews for two distinct purposes — one simple, one more complex.

1. Making Bible Study More Accessible

First and foremost, we want to make it easier for people to study the Bible. These overviews provide a convenient entry point to learn more about what you’re reading, and to guide you into deeper study when you are ready.

Bible Gateway Plus is a powerful tool for Bible study — but with over 70 resources in its library, it can feel overwhelming for new users. How do you choose which resource to start with for any given passage? Bible Gateway’s chapter overviews give you that accessible starting point, while connecting you to relevant material within that collection.

2. Leveraging — and Restraining — AI

Second, we want to recognize the potential that AI can bring to Bible study — while remaining clear-eyed about its risks.

Most of us are aware of the increasing presence of AI in everyday life. Its ability to rapidly organize and summarize information at scale has sent ripples across nearly every industry and activity. And faith is no exception.

The Christian research firm Barna found that 44% of practicing Christians use AI often or very often in their personal lives, compared to just 31% of U.S. adults overall. About a third of practicing Christians said they had turned to AI for spiritual guidance or Bible-related questions in the past month. As many as two-thirds said it was improving their lives.

At the same time, 57% regarded AI as a threat, and 83% expressed concern about it misinterpreting Scripture. Among pastors, that concern jumps to 94%.

These concerns are valid. AI does make mistakes. In some cases, it even makes stuff up. For many everyday uses, these errors — known as “hallucinations” — can be troubling. When it comes to Scripture, they could, in some cases, lead to serious sin (see Deut. 4:2, Prov. 30:6, Rev. 22:18–19).

That’s why we created these overviews the way we did. Unlike a typical chatbot, which might pull information from anywhere (or nowhere), Bible Gateway’s chapter overviews use a predefined source collection, fixed text, individual theological review, and clear citations readers can inspect and follow. While not a failsafe against all error, this approach grants what we believe to be the highest level of confidence and transparency currently achievable with this technology.

See How a Chapter Overview Can Help Your Study

Let’s look at Psalm 23 to see how even a familiar passage can offer more to explore. We recommend following this pattern for using chapter overviews:

  1. Read the passage.
  2. Consult the overview.
  3. If interested, follow a citation and read the full source note.
  4. Return to the passage with added context, and continue.

In this case, start by reading Psalm 23.

Then, consult the overview in the Insights tab. Here’s what it says, in full:

Let’s follow footnote 7, which leads us to the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible. Here’s its full note, available with Bible Gateway Plus, on this subject:

“The peaceful and luxuriant picture of security in vv. 2–3 (‘green pastures,’ ‘quiet waters’) gives way to a terrifying image; the Hebrew evokes ‘the shadow of death.’ The type of valley in view here is the deep, rocky wadi, a dry streambed carved by rushing waters in the spring but dark and forbidding most of the year. Dangers included flash floods and attacks from animals or outlaws. Yet even here, Yahweh leads David so that he fears no evil.”

You can now choose whether to study deeper into that same source, go back and follow footnotes into other sources, or continue on to another passage.

How to Find Chapter Overviews in Bible Gateway

Bible Gateway’s Chapter Overviews are available now in English on all devices. Here’s how to access them:

  • On mobile, tap Insights at the top of of the passage page (just below the Bible Books and Versions dropdown menus).
  • In the mobile app, tap the Study icon at the top-right of the screen to see the Insights tab as an overlay.

Questions About Chapter Overviews

Here are some short answers to common questions about Bible Gateway’s Chapter Overviews.

Is this a chatbot?

No. These are fixed-content chapter overviews prepared in advance. They do not generate new answers in response to your questions or each time you open a chapter.

Who reviewed the overviews?

Every single overview was read, vetted, and approved by a trained evangelical pastor and theologian.

How do I know where the information comes from?

Each overview includes citations to the specific resources used to create it, so you can explore the source material for yourself. You can see the list of sources under the section “Which Resources Do Chapter Overviews Use?” above.

Can an overview still contain an error?

Careful sourcing and human review provide strong reasons for confidence, but no study aid is beyond correction. We encourage you to read the biblical passage closely and explore the cited resources as you study. When in doubt, consult your pastor.

What theological perspective do the overviews reflect?

The overviews reflect a broadly evangelical theological perspective, drawing on the study resources listed above.

Does this feature change the Bible text?

No. We will never edit, replace, or otherwise modify the actual Bible text with these overviews. They appear alongside Scripture as study material, not within the biblical text.

Do I have to use Chapter Overviews?

No. Using Chapter Overviews is entirely optional. You can continue reading and studying with the Bible Gateway tools you already use.

How should I use them in my faith journey?

Use an overview as a starting point for further reading and reflection. Personal engagement with Scripture, prayer, discernment, and life in Christian community remain essential.

Conclusion: Scripture Remains the Center
