Perfect Love That Drives Out Fear: 1 John 4:18
February often brings a quieter kind of reflection — a time when questions of fear, confidence, and trust surface beneath the routines of daily life. Scripture speaks directly into that space with clarity and assurance in 1 John 4:18 (NIV):
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”
At first glance, this verse offers comfort. The NIV Application Bible (available with Bible Gateway Plus) helps clarify what John is emphasizing here:
“The most immediate result of this perfect love is assurance: We will have boldness or confidence on the day of judgment. Fear and love are mutually exclusive. To fear God’s character or the final judgment paralyzes us. It destroys the perfection that love offers. Knowing unequivocally that God by his Spirit resides in our lives results in unbounded confidence as we approach the day when we meet God.”
This note reminds us that John isn’t describing everyday worries or reverence for God — but a deeper fear that comes from uncertainty about where we stand with Him. God’s love, made complete through Christ, replaces that fear with confidence and assurance.
