And when they came to Jesus they besought Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was worthy,

The leaders went to Jesus and begged him to do something. They said, “This man deserves your help!

But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this,

The men went to Jesus. They begged Jesus to help the officer. They said, “This officer is worthy to have your help.

A Roman centurion’s extraordinary faith in Jesus

1-5 When Jesus had finished these talks to the people, he came to Capernaum, where it happened that there was a man very seriously ill and in fact at the point of death. He was the slave of a centurion who thought very highly of him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him with the request that he would come and save his servant’s life. When they came to Jesus, they urged him strongly to grant this request, saying that the centurion deserved to have this done for him. “He loves our nation and has built us a synagogue out of his own pocket,” they said.

So they began pleading earnestly with Jesus to come with them and help the man. They told him what a wonderful person the captain was.

“If anyone deserves your help, it is he,” they said,

A Place of Holy Mystery

1-5 When he finished speaking to the people, he entered Capernaum. A Roman captain there had a servant who was on his deathbed. He prized him highly and didn’t want to lose him. When he heard Jesus was back, he sent leaders from the Jewish community asking him to come and heal his servant. They came to Jesus and urged him to do it, saying, “He deserves this. He loves our people. He even built our meeting place.”
