Psalm 40-42

God Sustains His Servant.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

40 I (A)waited [a]patiently for the Lord;
And He reached down to me and (B)heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the (C)pit of [b]destruction, out of the mud;
And (D)He set my feet on a rock, (E)making my footsteps firm.
He put a (F)new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will (G)see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.

How (H)blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust,
And (I)has not turned to the [c]proud, nor to those who (J)become involved in falsehood.
Many, Lord my God, are (K)the wonders which You have done,
And Your (L)thoughts toward us;
There is no one to compare with You.
If I would declare and speak of them,
They (M)would be too numerous to count.

(N)You have not desired [d]sacrifice and meal offering;
You have [e]opened my ears;
You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
It is [f]written of me in the scroll of the book.
(O)I delight to do Your will, my God;
(P)Your Law is within my [g]heart.”

I have (Q)proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation;
Behold, I will (R)not restrain my lips,
Lord, (S)You know.
10 I have (T)not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;
I have (U)spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.

11 You, Lord, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
[h]Your (V)mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me.
12 For evils beyond number have (W)surrounded me;
My (X)guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are (Y)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my (Z)heart has [i]failed me.

13 (AA)Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me;
(AB)Hurry, Lord, to help me.
14 May those be (AC)ashamed and humiliated together
Who (AD)seek my [j]life to destroy it;
May those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight [k]in my hurt.
15 May those (AE)be [l]appalled because of their shame
Who (AF)say to me, “Aha, aha!”
16 (AG)May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
May those who love Your salvation continually (AH)say,
“The Lord be exalted!”
17 But (AI)I am afflicted and needy;
(AJ)May the Lord be mindful of me.
You are my help and my savior;
Do not delay, my God.

The Psalmist in Sickness Complains of Enemies and False Friends.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

41 Blessed is one who (AK)considers the [m]helpless;
The Lord will save him (AL)on a day of [n]trouble.
The Lord will (AM)protect him and keep him alive,
And he will be called [o](AN)blessed upon the earth;
And (AO)do not turn him over to the desire of his enemies.
The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You [p]restore him to health.

As for me, I said, “Lord, be gracious to me;
(AP)Heal my soul, for (AQ)I have sinned against You.”
My enemies (AR)speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
And [q]when he comes to see me, he (AS)speaks [r]empty words;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he tells it.
All who hate me whisper together against me;
They (AT)plot my harm against me, saying,
“A wicked thing is poured out [s]upon him,
So that when he lies down, he will (AU)not get up again.”
Even my [t](AV)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

10 But You, Lord, be gracious to me and (AW)raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that (AX)You are pleased with me,
Because (AY)my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.
12 As for me, (AZ)You uphold me in my integrity,
And You place me (BA)in Your presence forever.

13 (BB)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

BOOK 2

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

For the music director. A [u]Maskil of the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer [v]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul [w](BC)pants for You, God.
My soul (BD)thirsts for God, for the (BE)living God;
When shall I come and [x](BF)appear before God?
My (BG)tears have been my food day and night,
While they (BH)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
I remember these things and (BI)pour out my soul within me.
For I (BJ)used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God,
With a voice of (BK)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

(BL)Why are you [y](BM)in despair, my soul?
And why are you (BN)restless within me?
(BO)Wait for God, for I will [z]again praise [aa]Him
For the [ab](BP)help of His [ac]presence, my God.
My soul is [ad]in despair within me;
Therefore I (BQ)remember You from (BR)the land of the Jordan
And the [ae]peaks of (BS)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your (BT)breakers and Your waves have passed over me.
The Lord will (BU)send His goodness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me (BV)in the night,
A prayer to (BW)the God of my life.

I will say to God (BX)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go about (BY)mourning [af]because of the (BZ)oppression of the enemy?”
10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries taunt me,
While they (CA)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 (CB)Why are you [ag]in despair, my soul?
And why are you restless within me?
Wait for God, for I will again praise [ah]Him
For the [ai]help of His presence, my God.

Acts 27:1-26

Paul Is Sent to Rome

27 Now when it was decided that (A)we (B)would sail for (C)Italy, they proceeded to turn Paul and some other prisoners over to a centurion of the Augustan [a](D)cohort, named Julius. And we boarded an Adramyttian ship that was about to sail to the regions along the coast of [b](E)Asia, and put out to sea accompanied by (F)Aristarchus, a (G)Macedonian of (H)Thessalonica. The next day we put in at (I)Sidon; and Julius (J)treated Paul with consideration and (K)allowed him to go to his friends and receive care. From there we put out to sea and sailed under the shelter of (L)Cyprus, because (M)the winds were contrary. When we had sailed through the sea along the coast of (N)Cilicia and (O)Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia. There the centurion found an (P)Alexandrian ship sailing for (Q)Italy, and he put us aboard it. When we had sailed slowly for a good many days, and with difficulty had arrived off Cnidus, (R)since the wind did not permit us to go farther, we sailed under the shelter of (S)Crete, off Salmone; and with difficulty (T)sailing past it, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.

When considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, since even (U)the [c]fast was already over, Paul started admonishing them, 10 saying to them, “Men, I perceive that the voyage will certainly be with (V)damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” 11 But the centurion was more persuaded by the (W)pilot and the [d]captain of the ship than by what was being said by Paul. 12 The harbor was not suitable for wintering, so the majority reached a decision to put out to sea from there, if somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of (X)Crete facing southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there.

13 [e]When a moderate south wind came up, thinking that they had attained their purpose, they weighed anchor and began (Y)sailing along (Z)Crete, closer to shore.

Shipwreck

14 But before very long a violent wind, called [f]Euraquilo, (AA)rushed down from [g]the land; 15 and when the ship was caught in it and could not head up into the wind, we gave up and let ourselves be driven by the wind. 16 Running under the shelter of a small island called Cauda, we were able to get the ship’s [h]boat under control only with difficulty. 17 After they had hoisted it up, they used [i]supporting cables in undergirding the ship; and fearing that they might (AB)run aground on the shallows of Syrtis, they let down the [j]sea anchor and let themselves be driven along in this way. 18 The next day as we were being violently tossed by the storm, [k]they began to (AC)jettison the cargo; 19 and on the third day they threw the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands. 20 Since neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was assailing us, from then on all hope of our being saved was slowly abandoned.

21 [l]When many had lost their appetites, Paul then stood among them and said, “[m](AD)Men, you should have followed my advice and not have set sail from (AE)Crete, and thereby spared yourselves this (AF)damage and loss. 22 And yet now I urge you to (AG)keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For this very night (AH)an angel of the God to whom I belong, (AI)whom I also serve, (AJ)came to me, 24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; (AK)you must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has graciously granted you (AL)all those who are sailing with you.’ 25 Therefore, (AM)keep up your courage, men, for I believe God that [n]it will turn out exactly as I have been told. 26 But we must (AN)run aground on a certain (AO)island.”
