Version
Leviticus 1-3

Sacrifices Burned Whole

The Lord called to Moses from the Tent of the Lord's presence and gave him the following rules for the Israelites to observe when they offer their sacrifices.

When you offer an animal sacrifice, it may be one of your cattle or one of your sheep or goats. If you are offering one of your cattle as a burnt offering, you must bring a bull without any defects. You must present it at the entrance of the Tent of the Lord's presence so that the Lord will accept you. You shall put your hand on its head, and it will be accepted as a sacrifice to take away your sins. You shall kill the bull there, and the Aaronite priests shall present the blood to the Lord and then throw it against all four sides of the altar located at the entrance of the Tent. Then you shall skin the animal and cut it up, and the priests shall arrange firewood on the altar and light it. They shall put on the fire the pieces of the animal, including the head and the fat. You must wash the internal organs and the hind legs, and the officiating priest will burn the whole sacrifice on the altar. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord.

10 If you are offering one of your sheep or goats, it must be a male without any defects. 11 You shall kill it on the north side of the altar, and the priests shall throw its blood on all four sides of the altar. 12 After you cut it up, the officiating priest shall put on the fire all the parts, including the head and the fat. 13 You must wash the internal organs and the hind legs, and the priest will present the sacrifice to the Lord and burn all of it on the altar. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord.

14 If you are offering a bird as a burnt offering, it must be a dove or a pigeon. 15 The priest shall present it at the altar, wring its neck, and burn its head on the altar. Its blood shall be drained out against the side of the altar. 16 He shall remove the crop and its contents and throw them away on the east side of the altar where the ashes are put. 17 He shall take hold of its wings and tear its body open, without tearing the wings off, and then burn it whole on the altar. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord.

Grain Offerings

When any of you present an offering of grain to the Lord, you must first grind it into flour. You must put olive oil and incense on it and bring it to the Aaronite priests. The officiating priest shall take a handful of the flour and oil and all of the incense and burn it on the altar as a token that it has all been offered to the Lord. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord. The rest of the grain offering belongs to the priests; it is very holy, since it is taken from the food offered to the Lord.

If the offering is bread baked in an oven, it must be made without yeast. It may be thick loaves made of flour mixed with olive oil or thin cakes brushed with olive oil.

If the offering is bread cooked on a griddle, it is to be made of flour mixed with olive oil but without yeast. Crumble it up and pour the oil on it when you present it as an offering.

If the offering is bread cooked in a pan, it is to be made of flour and olive oil. Bring it as an offering to the Lord and present it to the priest, who will take it to the altar. The priest will take part of it as a token that it has all been offered to the Lord, and he will burn it on the altar. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord. 10 The rest of the offering belongs to the priests; it is very holy, since it is taken from the food offered to the Lord.

11 None of the grain offerings which you present to the Lord may be made with yeast; you must never use yeast or honey in food offered to the Lord. 12 An offering of the first grain that you harvest each year shall be brought to the Lord, but it is not to be burned on the altar. 13 Put salt on every grain offering, because salt represents the covenant between you and God. (You must put salt on all your offerings.) 14 When you bring to the Lord an offering of the first grain harvested, offer roasted grain or ground meal. 15 Add olive oil and put incense on it. 16 The priest will burn that part of the meal and oil that is to serve as a token, and also all the incense, as a food offering to the Lord.

Fellowship Offerings

When any of you offer one of your cattle as a fellowship offering, it is to be a bull or a cow without any defects. You shall put your hand on the head of the animal and kill it at the entrance of the Tent of the Lord's presence. The Aaronite priests shall throw the blood against all four sides of the altar and present the following parts of the animal as a food offering to the Lord: all the fat on the internal organs, the kidneys and the fat on them, and the best part of the liver. The priests shall burn all this on the altar along with the burnt offerings. The odor of this food offering is pleasing to the Lord.

If a sheep or goat is used as a fellowship offering, it may be male or female, but it must be without any defects. If you offer a sheep, you shall put your hand on its head and kill it in front of the Tent. The priests shall throw its blood against all four sides of the altar and present the following parts of the animal as a food offering to the Lord: the fat, the entire fat tail cut off near the backbone, all the fat covering the internal organs, 10 the kidneys and the fat on them, and the best part of the liver. 11 The officiating priest shall burn all this on the altar as a food offering to the Lord.

12 If you offer a goat, 13 you shall put your hand on its head and kill it in front of the Tent. The priests shall throw its blood against all four sides of the altar 14 and present the following parts as a food offering to the Lord: all the fat on the internal organs, 15 the kidneys and the fat on them, and the best part of the liver. 16 The priest shall burn all this on the altar as a food offering pleasing to the Lord. All the fat belongs to the Lord. 17 No Israelite may eat any fat or any blood; this is a rule to be kept forever by all Israelites wherever they live.

Mark 1:29-2:12

Jesus Heals Many People(A)

29 Jesus and his disciples, including James and John, left the synagogue and went straight to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and as soon as Jesus arrived, he was told about her. 31 He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them.

32 After the sun had set and evening had come, people brought to Jesus all the sick and those who had demons. 33 All the people of the town gathered in front of the house. 34 Jesus healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons. He would not let the demons say anything, because they knew who he was.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee(B)

35 Very early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed. 36 But Simon and his companions went out searching for him, 37 and when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

38 But Jesus answered, “We must go on to the other villages around here. I have to preach in them also, because that is why I came.”

39 (C)So he traveled all over Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and driving out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man(D)

40 A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. “If you want to,” he said, “you can make me clean.”[a]

41 Jesus was filled with pity,[b] and reached out and touched him. “I do want to,” he answered. “Be clean!” 42 At once the disease left the man, and he was clean. 43 Then Jesus spoke sternly to him and sent him away at once, 44 (E)after saying to him, “Listen, don't tell anyone about this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered.”

45 But the man went away and began to spread the news everywhere. Indeed, he talked so much that Jesus could not go into a town publicly. Instead, he stayed out in lonely places, and people came to him from everywhere.

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man(F)

A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum, and the news spread that he was at home. So many people came together that there was no room left, not even out in front of the door. Jesus was preaching the message to them when four men arrived, carrying a paralyzed man to Jesus. Because of the crowd, however, they could not get the man to him. So they made a hole in the roof right above the place where Jesus was. When they had made an opening, they let the man down, lying on his mat. Seeing how much faith they had, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My son, your sins are forgiven.”

Some teachers of the Law who were sitting there thought to themselves, “How does he dare talk like this? This is blasphemy! God is the only one who can forgive sins!”

At once Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he said to them, “Why do you think such things? Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’? 10 I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, 11 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

12 While they all watched, the man got up, picked up his mat, and hurried away. They were all completely amazed and praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Psalm 35:17-28

17 How much longer, Lord, will you just look on?
    Rescue me from their attacks;
    save my life from these lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the assembly of your people;
    I will praise you before them all.

19 (A)Don't let my enemies, those liars,
    gloat over my defeat.
Don't let those who hate me for no reason
    smirk with delight over my sorrow.

20 They do not speak in a friendly way;
    instead they invent all kinds of lies about peace-loving people.
21 They accuse me, shouting,
    “We saw what you did!”
22 But you, O Lord, have seen this.
    So don't be silent, Lord;
    don't keep yourself far away!
23 Rouse yourself, O Lord, and defend me;
    rise up, my God, and plead my cause.
24 You are righteous, O Lord, so declare me innocent;
    don't let my enemies gloat over me.
25 Don't let them say to themselves,
    “We are rid of him!
    That's just what we wanted!”

26 May those who gloat over my suffering
    be completely defeated and confused;
may those who claim to be better than I am
    be covered with shame and disgrace.

27 May those who want to see me acquitted
    shout for joy and say again and again,
“How great is the Lord!
    He is pleased with the success of his servant.”
28 Then I will proclaim your righteousness,
    and I will praise you all day long.

Proverbs 9:13-18

13 Stupidity is like a loud, ignorant, shameless woman.[a] 14 She sits at the door of her house or on a seat in the highest part of town, 15 and calls out to people passing by, who are minding their own business: 16 “Come in, ignorant people!” To the foolish she says, 17 “Stolen water is sweeter. Stolen bread tastes better.” 18 Her victims do not know that the people die who go to her house, that those who have already entered are now deep in the world of the dead.
