New English Translation (NET)
Version
Genesis 42:18-43:34

18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do as I say[a] and you will live,[b] for I fear God.[c] 19 If you are honest men, leave one of your brothers confined here in prison[d] while the rest of you go[e] and take grain back for your hungry families.[f] 20 But you must bring[g] your youngest brother to me. Then[h] your words will be verified[i] and you will not die.” They did as he said.[j]

21 They said to one another,[k] “Surely we’re being punished[l] because of our brother, because we saw how distressed he was[m] when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen. That is why this distress[n] has come on us!” 22 Reuben said to them, “Didn’t I say to you, ‘Don’t sin against the boy,’ but you wouldn’t listen? So now we must pay for shedding his blood!”[o] 23 (Now[p] they did not know that Joseph could understand them,[q] for he was speaking through an interpreter.)[r] 24 He turned away from them and wept. When he turned around and spoke to them again,[s] he had Simeon taken[t] from them and tied up[u] before their eyes.

25 Then Joseph gave orders to fill[v] their bags with grain, to return each man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. His orders were carried out.[w] 26 So they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.[x]

27 When one of them[y] opened his sack to get feed for his donkey at their resting place,[z] he saw his money in the mouth of his sack.[aa] 28 He said to his brothers, “My money was returned! Here it is in my sack!” They were dismayed;[ab] they turned trembling to one another[ac] and said, “What in the world has God done to us?”[ad]

29 They returned to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan and told him all the things that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us and treated us[ae] as if we were[af] spying on the land. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies! 32 We are from a family of twelve brothers; we are the sons of one father.[ag] One is no longer alive,[ah] and the youngest is with our father at this time[ai] in the land of Canaan.’

33 “Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘This is how I will find out if you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain[aj] for your hungry households and go. 34 But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know[ak] that you are honest men and not spies.[al] Then I will give your brother back to you and you may move about freely in the land.’”[am]

35 When they were emptying their sacks, there was each man’s bag of money in his sack! When they and their father saw the bags of money, they were afraid. 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You are making me childless! Joseph is gone.[an] Simeon is gone.[ao] And now you want to take[ap] Benjamin! Everything is against me.”

37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may[aq] put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my care[ar] and I will bring him back to you.” 38 But Jacob[as] replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left.[at] If an accident happens to him on the journey you have to make, then you will bring down my gray hair[au] in sorrow to the grave.”[av]

The Second Journey to Egypt

43 Now the famine was severe in the land.[aw] When they finished eating the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Return, buy us a little more food.”

But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned[ax] us, ‘You will not see my face[ay] unless your brother is with you.’ If you send[az] our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy food for you. But if you will not send him, we won’t go down there because the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.’”

Israel said, “Why did you bring this trouble[ba] on me by telling[bb] the man you had one more brother?”

They replied, “The man questioned us[bc] thoroughly[bd] about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’[be] So we answered him in this way.[bf] How could we possibly know[bg] that he would say,[bh] ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Then Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me and we will go immediately.[bi] Then we will live[bj] and not die—we and you and our little ones. I myself pledge security[bk] for him; you may hold me liable. If I do not bring him back to you and place him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.[bl] 10 But if we had not delayed, we could have traveled there and back[bm] twice by now!”

11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and take a gift down to the man—a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds. 12 Take double the money with you;[bn] you must take back[bo] the money that was returned in the mouths of your sacks—perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take your brother too, and go right away[bp] to the man.[bq] 14 May the Sovereign God[br] grant you mercy before the man so that he may release[bs] your other brother[bt] and Benjamin! As for me, if I lose my children I lose them.”[bu]

15 So the men took these gifts, and they took double the money with them, along with Benjamin. Then they hurried down to Egypt[bv] and stood before Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the servant who was over his household, “Bring the men to the house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for the men will eat with me at noon.” 17 The man did just as Joseph said; he[bw] brought the men into Joseph’s house.[bx]

18 But the men were afraid when they were brought to Joseph’s house. They said, “We are being brought in because of[by] the money that was returned in our sacks last time.[bz] He wants to capture us,[ca] make us slaves, and take[cb] our donkeys!” 19 So they approached the man who was in charge of Joseph’s household and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. 20 They said, “My lord, we did indeed come down[cc] the first time[cd] to buy food. 21 But when we came to the place where we spent the night, we opened our sacks and each of us found his money—the full amount[ce]—in the mouth of his sack. So we have returned it.[cf] 22 We have brought additional money with us to buy food. We do not know who put the money in our sacks!”

23 “Everything is fine,”[cg] the man in charge of Joseph’s household told them. “Don’t be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks.[ch] I had your money.”[ci] Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24 The servant in charge[cj] brought the men into Joseph’s house. He gave them water, and they washed their feet. Then he gave food to their donkeys. 25 They got their gifts ready for Joseph’s arrival[ck] at noon, for they had heard[cl] that they were to have a meal[cm] there.

26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside,[cn] and they bowed down to the ground before him. 27 He asked them how they were doing.[co] Then he said, “Is your aging father well, the one you spoke about? Is he still alive?” 28 “Your servant our father is well,” they replied. “He is still alive.” They bowed down in humility.[cp]

29 When Joseph looked up[cq] and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, he said, “Is this your youngest brother, whom you told me about?” Then he said, “May God be gracious to you, my son.”[cr] 30 Joseph hurried out, for he was overcome by affection for his brother[cs] and was at the point of tears.[ct] So he went to his room and wept there.

31 Then he washed his face and came out. With composure he said,[cu] “Set out the food.” 32 They set a place for him, a separate place for his brothers,[cv] and another for the Egyptians who were eating with him. (The Egyptians are not able to eat with Hebrews, for the Egyptians think it is disgusting[cw] to do so.)[cx] 33 They sat before him, arranged by order of birth, beginning with the firstborn and ending with the youngest.[cy] The men looked at each other in astonishment.[cz] 34 He gave them portions of the food set before him,[da] but the portion for Benjamin was five times greater than the portions for any of the others. They drank with Joseph until they all became drunk.[db]

Matthew 13:47-14:12

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea that caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, they pulled it ashore, sat down, and put the good fish into containers and threw the bad away. 49 It will be this way at the end of the age. Angels will come and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace,[a] where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They replied, “Yes.” 52 Then he said to them, “Therefore every expert in the law[b] who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and old.”

Rejection at Nazareth

53 Now when[c] Jesus finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Then[d] he came to his hometown[e] and began to teach the people[f] in their synagogue.[g] They[h] were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers? 55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother named Mary?[i] And aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 And aren’t all his sisters here with us? So where did he get all this?” 57 And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 At that time Herod the tetrarch[j] heard reports about Jesus, and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.” For Herod had arrested John, bound him,[k] and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had repeatedly told[l] him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”[m] Although[n] Herod[o] wanted to kill John,[p] he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet. But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, so much that he promised[q] with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Instructed by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Although it grieved the king,[r] because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given. 10 So[s] he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His[t] head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 Then John’s[u] disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.

Psalm 18:16-36

16 He reached down[a] from above and took hold of me;
he pulled me from the surging water.[b]
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy,[c]
from those who hate me,
for they were too strong for me.
18 They confronted[d] me in my day of calamity,
but the Lord helped me.[e]
19 He brought me out into a wide open place;
he delivered me because he was pleased with me.[f]
20 The Lord repaid[g] me for my godly deeds;[h]
he rewarded[i] my blameless behavior.[j]
21 For I have obeyed the Lord’s commands;[k]
I have not rebelled against my God.[l]
22 For I am aware of all his regulations,[m]
and I do not reject his rules.[n]
23 I was innocent before him,
and kept myself from sinning.[o]
24 The Lord rewarded me for my godly deeds;[p]
he took notice of my blameless behavior.[q]
25 You prove to be loyal[r] to one who is faithful;[s]
you prove to be trustworthy[t] to one who is innocent.[u]
26 You prove to be reliable[v] to one who is blameless,
but you prove to be deceptive[w] to one who is perverse.[x]
27 For you deliver oppressed[y] people,
but you bring down those who have a proud look.[z]
28 Indeed,[aa] you light my lamp, Lord.[ab]
My God[ac] illuminates the darkness around me.[ad]
29 Indeed,[ae] with your help[af] I can charge against[ag] an army;[ah]
by my God’s power[ai] I can jump over a wall.[aj]
30 The one true God acts in a faithful manner;[ak]
the Lord’s promise[al] is reliable.[am]
He is a shield to all who take shelter[an] in him.
31 Indeed,[ao] who is God besides the Lord?
Who is a protector[ap] besides our God?[aq]
32 The one true God[ar] gives[as] me strength;[at]
he removes[au] the obstacles in my way.[av]
33 He gives me the agility of a deer;[aw]
he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.[ax]
34 He trains my hands for battle;[ay]
my arms can bend even the strongest bow.[az]
35 You give me your protective shield;[ba]
your right hand supports me.[bb]
Your willingness to help[bc] enables me to prevail.[bd]
36 You widen my path;[be]
my feet[bf] do not slip.

Proverbs 4:7-10

Wisdom is supreme[a]—so[b] acquire wisdom,
and whatever you acquire,[c] acquire understanding![d]
Esteem her highly[e] and she will exalt you;
she will honor you if you embrace her.
She will place a fair[f] garland on your head;
she will bestow a beautiful crown[g] on you.”
10 Listen, my child,[h] and accept my words,
so that[i] the years of your life will be many.[j]
