    These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
  2. but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.
  3. “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us.
  4. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
  5. During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.
  6. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.
  7. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.
  8. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
  9. But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
  10. Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
  11. God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
  12. God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.
  13. “Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.
  14. “The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.’
  15. Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son,
  16. Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites,

    Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’”
  18. Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”
  19. And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
  20. Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way?
  21. The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.”
  22. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.
  23. “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
  24. Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.
  25. “Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.”
