Liberation from Captivity Promised

30 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘(A)Write all the words which I have spoken to you in a book. For behold, (B)days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will (C)restore the fortunes of My people (D)Israel and Judah.’ The Lord says, ‘I will also (E)bring them back to the land that I gave to their forefathers, and they shall take possession of it.’”

Now these are the words which the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah:

“For this is what the Lord says:

[a]I have heard a sound of (F)terror,
Of fear, and there is no peace.
Ask now, and see
If a male can give birth.
Why do I see every man
With his hands on his waist, (G)as a woman in childbirth?
And why have all faces turned pale?
Woe, for that (H)day is great,
There is (I)none like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s (J)distress,
Yet he will be (K)saved from it.

‘It shall come about on that day,’ declares the Lord of armies, ‘that I will (L)break his yoke from [b]their necks and will tear to pieces [c]their (M)restraints; and strangers will no longer (N)make [d]them their slaves. But they shall serve the Lord their God and (O)David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 And (P)do not fear, Jacob My servant,’ declares the Lord,
‘And do not be dismayed, Israel;
For behold, I am going to save you (Q)from far away,
And your [e]descendants from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return and be (R)at peace, without anxiety,
And (S)no one will make him afraid.
11 For (T)I am with you,’ declares the Lord, ‘to save you;
For I will completely (U)destroy all the nations where I have scattered you,
Only I will (V)not destroy you completely.
But I will (W)discipline you fairly
And will by no means leave you unpunished.’

12 “For this is what the Lord says:
‘Your broken limb is irreparable,
And your (X)wound is incurable.
13 There is no one to plead your cause;
No healing for your sore,
(Y)No recovery for you.
14 All your (Z)lovers have forgotten you,
They do not seek you;
For I have (AA)wounded you with the wound of an enemy,
With the (AB)punishment of a (AC)cruel one,
Because your (AD)wrongdoing is great,
And your (AE)sins are numerous.
15 Why do you cry out over your injury?
Your pain is incurable.
Because your wrongdoing is great
And your sins are numerous,
I have done these things to you.
16 Therefore all who (AF)devour you will be devoured;
And all your adversaries, every one of them, (AG)will go into captivity;
And those who plunder you will become plunder,
And all who plunder you I will turn into plunder.
17 For I will [f]restore you to [g](AH)health
And I will heal you of your wounds,’ declares the Lord,
‘Because they have called you an (AI)outcast, saying:
“It is Zion; no one [h]cares for her.”’

Restoration of Jacob

18 “This is what the Lord says:
‘Behold, I will (AJ)restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
And (AK)have compassion on his dwellings;
And the (AL)city will be rebuilt on its ruins,
And the (AM)palace will stand on its rightful place.
19 From them will come a (AN)song of thanksgiving
And the voices of those who [i](AO)celebrate;
And I will (AP)multiply them and they will not decrease;
I will (AQ)honor them and they will not be insignificant.
20 [j]Their children also will be as before,
And [k]their congregation will be (AR)established before Me;
And I will punish all [l]their oppressors.
21 [m]Their (AS)leader shall be one of them,
And [n]their ruler will come out from [o]their midst;
And I will (AT)bring him near and he shall approach Me;
For [p]who would dare to risk his life to (AU)approach Me?’ declares the Lord.
22 ‘You shall be (AV)My people,
And I will be your God.’”

23 Behold, the (AW)tempest of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth,
A [q]sweeping tempest;
It will whirl upon the head of the wicked.
24 The (AX)fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
Until He has performed and accomplished
The intent of His heart.
In the (AY)latter days you will understand this.

Israel’s Mourning Turned to Joy

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the (AZ)God of all the (BA)families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”

This is what the Lord says:
“The people who survived the sword
(BB)Found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when it went to (BC)find its rest.”
The Lord appeared to [r]him [s]long ago, saying,
“I have (BD)loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore I have drawn you out with (BE)kindness.
(BF)I will build you again and you will be rebuilt,
Virgin of Israel!
You will [t]take up your (BG)tambourines again,
And go out to the dances of the (BH)revelers.
Again you will (BI)plant vineyards
On the [u]hills of Samaria;
The planters will plant
And will [v]enjoy the fruit.
For there will be a day when watchmen
On the hills of Ephraim call out,
‘Arise, and (BJ)let’s go up to Zion,
To the Lord our God.’”

For this is what the Lord says:
(BK)Sing aloud with joy for Jacob,
And be joyful with the [w](BL)chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
Lord, (BM)save Your people,
The (BN)remnant of Israel!’
Behold, I am (BO)bringing them from the north country,
And I will (BP)gather them from the remote parts of the earth,
Among them those who are (BQ)blind and those who (BR)limp,
The pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
They will return here as a great assembly.
(BS)They will come with weeping,
And by pleading I will bring them;
I will lead them by (BT)streams of waters,
On a straight path on which they will (BU)not stumble;
For I am a (BV)father to Israel,
And Ephraim is (BW)My firstborn.”

10 Hear the word of the Lord, you nations,
And declare it in the (BX)coastlands far away,
And say, “He who scattered Israel will (BY)gather him,
And He will keep him as a (BZ)shepherd keeps his flock.”
11 For the Lord has (CA)ransomed Jacob
And redeemed him from the hand of him who was (CB)stronger than he.
12 “They will (CC)come and shout for joy on the (CD)height of Zion,
And they will be (CE)radiant over the [x]bounty of the Lord
Over the (CF)grain, the new wine, the oil,
And over the young of the (CG)flock and the herd.
And their life will be like a (CH)watered garden,
And they will (CI)never languish again.
13 Then the virgin will rejoice in the (CJ)dance,
And the young men and the old together;
For I will (CK)turn their mourning into joy
And comfort them, and give them (CL)joy for their sorrow.
14 I will refresh the soul of the priests with [y]abundance,
And My people will be (CM)satisfied with My goodness,” declares the Lord.

15 This is what the Lord says:
(CN)A voice is heard in (CO)Ramah,
Lamenting and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She (CP)refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because (CQ)they are no more.”

16 This is what the Lord says:

(CR)Restrain your voice from weeping
And your eyes from tears;
For your (CS)work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord,
“And they will (CT)return from the land of the enemy.
17 There is (CU)hope for your future,” declares the Lord,
“And your children will return to their own territory.
18 I have certainly heard Ephraim (CV)grieving,
‘You have (CW)disciplined me, and I was corrected,
Like an untrained (CX)calf;
(CY)Bring me back that I may be restored,
For You are the Lord my God.
19 For after I turned back, I (CZ)repented;
And after I was instructed, I [z](DA)slapped my thigh;
I was (DB)ashamed and also humiliated
Because I bore the shame of my youth.’
20 Is (DC)Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a delightful child?
Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him,
I certainly still remember him;
Therefore My [aa](DD)heart yearns for him;
I will certainly (DE)have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.

21 “Set up roadmarks for yourself,
Place guideposts for yourself;
(DF)Direct your [ab]mind to the highway,
The way by which you went.
(DG)Return, O virgin of Israel,
Return to these your cities.
22 How long will you waver,
You (DH)rebellious daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
A woman will shelter a man.”

23 This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Once again they will speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities when I (DI)restore their fortunes,

‘The Lord bless you, O (DJ)place of righteousness,
O (DK)holy hill!’

24 Judah and all its cities will (DL)live together in it, the farmers and those who travel with flocks. 25 (DM)For I give plenty of water to the weary ones, and [ac]refresh everyone who languishes.” 26 At this I (DN)awoke and looked, and my (DO)sleep had been pleasant to me.

A New Covenant

27 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will (DP)sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of mankind and the seed of animals. 28 And just as I have (DQ)watched over them to (DR)uproot them, tear them down, ruin, destroy, and bring disaster on them, so I will watch over them to (DS)build and to plant them,” declares the Lord.

29 “In those days they will no longer say,
(DT)The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
[ad]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt.’

30 But (DU)everyone will die for his own wrongdoing; each person who eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will become blunt.

31 (DV)Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a (DW)new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the (DX)covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I (DY)took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My (DZ)covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “For (EA)this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “(EB)I will put My law within them and write it on their heart; and (EC)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will (ED)not teach again, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all (EE)know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will (EF)forgive their wrongdoing, and their (EG)sin I will no longer remember.”

35 This is what the Lord says,
He who (EH)gives the sun for light by day
And the [ae]fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
Who (EI)stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
(EJ)The Lord of armies is His name:
36 (EK)If [af]this fixed order departs
From Me,” declares the Lord,
“Then the descendants of Israel also will (EL)cease
To be a nation before Me [ag]forever.”
37 This is what the Lord says:
(EM)If the heavens above can be measured
And the foundations of the earth searched out below,
Then I will also (EN)reject all the descendants of Israel
For everything that they have done,” declares the Lord.

38 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the (EO)city will be rebuilt for the Lord from the (EP)Tower of Hananel to the (EQ)Corner Gate. 39 The (ER)measuring line will go out farther straight ahead, to the hill Gareb; then it will turn to Goah. 40 And (ES)the entire valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook (ET)Kidron to the corner of the (EU)Horse Gate toward the east, shall be (EV)holy to the Lord; it will not be uprooted or overthrown ever again.”

Jeremiah Imprisoned

32 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the (EW)tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. Now at that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was imprisoned in the (EX)courtyard of the guard, which was at the house of the king of Judah, because Zedekiah king of Judah had (EY)imprisoned him, saying, “Why do you (EZ)prophesy, saying, ‘(FA)This is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (FB)hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will take it; and Zedekiah king of Judah will (FC)not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but he will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon, and he will (FD)speak with him [ah]face to face and see him eye to eye. Then he will (FE)take Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I visit him,” declares the Lord. “If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will (FF)not succeed”’?”

And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, “Buy for yourself my field which is at (FG)Anathoth, for you have the (FH)right of redemption to buy it.”’ Then my uncle’s son Hanamel came to me in the (FI)courtyard of the guard in accordance with the word of the Lord and said to me, ‘Buy my field, please, that is at (FJ)Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for you have the right of possession and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the (FK)word of the Lord.

“So I bought the field which was in Anathoth from Hanamel my uncle’s son, and I (FL)weighed out the silver for him, seventeen (FM)shekels of silver. 10 And I [ai](FN)signed and (FO)sealed the deed, and (FP)called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took the deeds of purchase, both the sealed copy containing the (FQ)terms and conditions and the open copy; 12 and I gave the deed of purchase to (FR)Baruch the son of (FS)Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of Hanamel my uncle’s son and in the sight of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, in the sight of all the Jews who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard. 13 And I commanded Baruch in their sight, saying, 14 ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Take these deeds, this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, so that they may [aj]last a long time.” 15 For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “(FT)Houses and fields and vineyards will again be purchased in this land.”’

Jeremiah Prays and God Explains

16 “After giving the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I (FU)prayed to the Lord, saying, 17 (FV)Oh, Lord [ak]God! Behold, You Yourself have (FW)made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! (FX)Nothing is too difficult for You, 18 who (FY)shows mercy to thousands, but (FZ)repays the wrongdoing of fathers into the laps of their children after them, (GA)great and (GB)mighty God. The (GC)Lord of armies is His name; 19 (GD)great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose (GE)eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of mankind, (GF)giving to everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds; 20 who has (GG)accomplished signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and even to this day both in Israel and among mankind; and You have (GH)made a name for Yourself, as at this day. 21 You (GI)brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders, and with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror; 22 and You gave them this land, which You (GJ)swore to their forefathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 They (GK)came in and took possession of it, but they (GL)did not obey Your voice or (GM)walk in Your Law; they did not do [al]anything that You commanded them to do; therefore You have made (GN)all this disaster happen to them. 24 Behold, the (GO)assault ramps have reached the city to take it; and the city has been (GP)handed over to the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the (GQ)sword, the famine, and the plague; and what You have spoken has (GR)come to pass; and behold, You see it. 25 Yet You have said to me, Lord [am]God, “Buy for yourself the field with money and call in witnesses”—although the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans.’”

26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 27 “Behold, I am the Lord, the (GS)God of all flesh; is anything (GT)too difficult for Me?” 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (GU)hand this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it. 29 And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will enter and (GV)set this city on fire and burn it, with the (GW)houses where people have offered incense to Baal on their roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger. 30 For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been doing only (GX)evil in My sight since their youth; for the sons of Israel have been only (GY)provoking Me to anger by the work of their hands,” declares the Lord. 31 “Indeed this city has been to Me a (GZ)provocation of My anger and My wrath since the day that they built it, even to this day, so that it should be (HA)removed from My sight, 32 because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah which they have done to provoke Me to anger—they, their (HB)kings, their leaders, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 They have turned their back to Me and not their face; though I taught them, (HC)teaching again and again, they would not listen to accept discipline. 34 But they (HD)put their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. 35 They built the (HE)high places of Baal that are in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to make their sons and their daughters pass through the fire to (HF)Molech, which I had not commanded them, nor had it [an]entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to mislead Judah to sin.

36 “Now therefore the Lord God of Israel says the following concerning this city of which you say, ‘It has been (HG)handed over to the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by plague’: 37 Behold, I am going to (HH)gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My anger, in My wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them back to this place and (HI)have them live in safety. 38 They shall be (HJ)My people, and I will be their God; 39 and I will (HK)give them one heart and one way, so that they will fear Me always, for their own (HL)good and for the good of their children after them. 40 I will make an (HM)everlasting covenant with them that I will (HN)not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will (HO)put the fear of Me in their hearts, so that they will not turn away from Me. 41 I will (HP)rejoice over them to do them good and will [ao]faithfully (HQ)plant them in this land with (HR)all My heart and all My soul. 42 For this is what the Lord says: ‘(HS)Just as I brought all this great disaster on this people, so I am going to (HT)bring on them all the good that I am promising them. 43 And (HU)fields will be purchased in this land of which you say, “(HV)It is a desolation, without man or animal; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans.” 44 People will buy fields for money, [ap](HW)sign and seal [aq]deeds, and call in witnesses in the (HX)land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the [ar]Negev; for I will (HY)restore their fortunes,’ declares the Lord.”

Restoration Promised

33 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the second time, while he was still (HZ)confined in the courtyard of the guard, saying, “This is what (IA)the Lord says, He who made [as]the earth, the Lord who formed it to create it, He whose name is the (IB)Lord: (IC)Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you (ID)great and [at]mighty things, (IE)which you do not know.’ For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says concerning the (IF)houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah which have been torn down to make a defense against the (IG)assault ramps and the sword: ‘While they are coming to (IH)fight the Chaldeans and to fill [au]their houses with the bodies of people whom I have struck down in My anger and My wrath, and I have (II)hidden My face from this city because of all their wickedness: Behold, I am going to bring to it (IJ)healing and a remedy, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them an (IK)abundance of peace and truth. And I will (IL)restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and will (IM)rebuild them as they were at first. And I will (IN)cleanse them from all their wrongdoing by which they have sinned against Me, and I will forgive all their wrongdoings by which they have sinned against Me and revolted against Me. [av]It will be to Me a (IO)name of joy, praise, and glory before (IP)all the nations of the earth, which will hear of all the (IQ)good that I do for them, and they will be (IR)frightened and tremble because of all the good and all the peace that I make for it.’

10 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Yet again there will be heard in this place, of which you say, “It is a (IS)waste, without man and without animal,” that is, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are (IT)deserted, without man and without inhabitant and without animal, 11 the voice of (IU)joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who say,

(IV)Give thanks to the Lord of armies,
For the Lord is good,
For His mercy is everlasting,”

as they bring a (IW)thanksgiving offering into the house of the Lord. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were at first,’ says the Lord.

12 “This is what the Lord of armies says: ‘There will again be in this place which is waste, (IX)without man or animal, and in all its cities, a pasture for shepherds who rest their (IY)flocks. 13 In the (IZ)cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, in the cities of the Negev, in the land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks will again (JA)pass under the hands of the one who counts them,’ says the Lord.

The Davidic Kingdom

14 ‘Behold, (JB)days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will (JC)fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will make a (JD)righteous Branch of David sprout; and He shall execute (JE)justice and righteousness on the earth. 16 In those days (JF)Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety; and this is the name by which it will be called: the (JG)Lord is our righteousness.’ 17 For this is what the Lord says: ‘[aw]David shall (JH)not lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; 18 [ax]and the (JI)Levitical priests shall not lack a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to (JJ)prepare sacrifices [ay]continually.’”

19 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 20 “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can (JK)break My covenant for the day and My covenant for the night, so that day and night do not occur at their proper time, 21 then (JL)My covenant with David My servant may also be broken, so that he will not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, My ministers. 22 As the (JM)heavenly [az]lights cannot be counted, and the (JN)sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will (JO)multiply the [ba]descendants of My servant David and the (JP)Levites who serve Me.’”

23 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 24 “Have you not observed what these people have asserted, saying, ‘The (JQ)two families which the Lord chose, He has (JR)rejected them’? So they (JS)despise My people as no longer being a nation [bb]in their sight. 25 This is what the Lord says: ‘If My (JT)covenant for day and night does not continue, and I have (JU)not established the [bc]fixed patterns of heaven and earth, 26 then I would (JV)reject the [bd]descendants of Jacob and David My servant, so as not to take from his [be]descendants (JW)rulers over the [bf]descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will (JX)restore their fortunes and have (JY)mercy on them.’”

Restoration of Israel

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write(A) in a book all the words I have spoken to you. The days(B) are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will bring(C) my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[a] and restore(D) them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the Lord.”

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Cries of fear(E) are heard—
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    Can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,(F)
    every face turned deathly pale?(G)
How awful that day(H) will be!
    No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble(I) for Jacob,
    but he will be saved(J) out of it.

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
    ‘I will break the yoke(K) off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;(L)
    no longer will foreigners enslave them.(M)
Instead, they will serve the Lord their God
    and David(N) their king,(O)
    whom I will raise up for them.

10 “‘So do not be afraid,(P) Jacob my servant;(Q)
    do not be dismayed, Israel,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will surely save(R) you out of a distant place,
    your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,(S)
    and no one will make him afraid.(T)
11 I am with you(U) and will save you,’
    declares the Lord.
‘Though I completely destroy all the nations
    among which I scatter you,
    I will not completely destroy(V) you.
I will discipline(W) you but only in due measure;
    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’(X)

12 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wound(Y) is incurable,
    your injury beyond healing.(Z)
13 There is no one to plead your cause,(AA)
    no remedy for your sore,
    no healing(AB) for you.
14 All your allies(AC) have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you.
I have struck you as an enemy(AD) would
    and punished you as would the cruel,(AE)
because your guilt is so great
    and your sins(AF) so many.
15 Why do you cry out over your wound,
    your pain that has no cure?(AG)
Because of your great guilt and many sins
    I have done these things to you.(AH)

16 “‘But all who devour(AI) you will be devoured;
    all your enemies will go into exile.(AJ)
Those who plunder(AK) you will be plundered;
    all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
17 But I will restore you to health
    and heal(AL) your wounds,’
declares the Lord,
‘because you are called an outcast,(AM)
    Zion for whom no one cares.’(AN)

18 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘I will restore the fortunes(AO) of Jacob’s tents(AP)
    and have compassion(AQ) on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt(AR) on her ruins,
    and the palace will stand in its proper place.
19 From them will come songs(AS) of thanksgiving(AT)
    and the sound of rejoicing.(AU)
I will add to their numbers,(AV)
    and they will not be decreased;
I will bring them honor,(AW)
    and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children(AX) will be as in days of old,
    and their community will be established(AY) before me;
    I will punish(AZ) all who oppress them.
21 Their leader(BA) will be one of their own;
    their ruler will arise from among them.(BB)
I will bring him near(BC) and he will come close to me—
    for who is he who will devote himself
    to be close to me?’
declares the Lord.
22 “‘So you will be my people,(BD)
    and I will be your God.(BE)’”

23 See, the storm(BF) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a driving wind swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger(BG) of the Lord will not turn back(BH)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand(BI) this.

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God(BJ) of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”

This is what the Lord says:

“The people who survive the sword
    will find favor(BK) in the wilderness;
    I will come to give rest(BL) to Israel.”

The Lord appeared to us in the past,[b] saying:

“I have loved(BM) you with an everlasting love;
    I have drawn(BN) you with unfailing kindness.
I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin(BO) Israel, will be rebuilt.(BP)
Again you will take up your timbrels(BQ)
    and go out to dance(BR) with the joyful.(BS)
Again you will plant(BT) vineyards
    on the hills of Samaria;(BU)
the farmers will plant them
    and enjoy their fruit.(BV)
There will be a day when watchmen(BW) cry out
    on the hills of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”(BX)

This is what the Lord says:

“Sing(BY) with joy for Jacob;
    shout for the foremost(BZ) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
    Lord, save(CA) your people,
    the remnant(CB) of Israel.’
See, I will bring them from the land of the north(CC)
    and gather(CD) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(CE) and the lame,(CF)
    expectant mothers and women in labor;
    a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;(CG)
    they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(CH) them beside streams of water(CI)
    on a level(CJ) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(CK)
    and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
    proclaim it in distant coastlands:(CL)
‘He who scattered(CM) Israel will gather(CN) them
    and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(CO)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
    and redeem(CP) them from the hand of those stronger(CQ) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(CR) on the heights(CS) of Zion;
    they will rejoice in the bounty(CT) of the Lord
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(CU)
    the young of the flocks(CV) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(CW)
    and they will sorrow(CX) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
    young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(CY) into gladness;
    I will give them comfort(CZ) and joy(DA) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(DB) the priests(DC) with abundance,
    and my people will be filled with my bounty,(DD)
declares the Lord.

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,(DE)
    mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,(DF)
    because they are no more.”(DG)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping
    and your eyes from tears,(DH)
for your work will be rewarded,(DI)
declares the Lord.
    “They will return(DJ) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(DK) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
    “Your children(DL) will return to their own land.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
    ‘You disciplined(DM) me like an unruly calf,(DN)
    and I have been disciplined.
Restore(DO) me, and I will return,
    because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(DP)
    I repented;
after I came to understand,
    I beat(DQ) my breast.
I was ashamed(DR) and humiliated
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(DS)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
    the child(DT) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
    I still remember(DU) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
    I have great compassion(DV) for him,”
declares the Lord.

21 “Set up road signs;
    put up guideposts.(DW)
Take note of the highway,(DX)
    the road that you take.
Return,(DY) Virgin(DZ) Israel,
    return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(EA)
    unfaithful(EB) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(EC) on earth—
    the woman will return to[c](ED) the man.”

23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[d](EE) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(EF) you, you prosperous city,(EG) you sacred mountain.’(EH) 24 People will live(EI) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(EJ) 25 I will refresh the weary(EK) and satisfy the faint.”(EL)

26 At this I awoke(EM) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.

27 “The days are coming,”(EN) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(EO) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(EP) over them to uproot(EQ) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(ER) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(ES) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(ET) have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(EU)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(EV) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(EW)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(EX)
    I made with their ancestors(EY)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,(EZ)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(FA) to[e] them,[f]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(FB)
    and write it on their hearts.(FC)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(FD)
34 No longer will they teach(FE) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(FF) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(FG) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins(FH) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(FI) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(FJ)
who stirs up the sea(FK)
    so that its waves roar(FL)
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(FM)
36 “Only if these decrees(FN) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(FO) ever cease
    being a nation before me.”

37 This is what the Lord says:

“Only if the heavens above can be measured(FP)
    and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(FQ) all the descendants of Israel
    because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.

38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(FR) for me from the Tower of Hananel(FS) to the Corner Gate.(FT) 39 The measuring line(FU) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(FV) where dead bodies(FW) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(FX) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(FY) will be holy(FZ) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(GA) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(GB) year of Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(GC) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(GD) in the courtyard of the guard(GE) in the royal palace of Judah.

Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(GF) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(GG) it. Zedekiah(GH) king of Judah will not escape(GI) the Babylonians[g](GJ) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. He will take(GK) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(GL) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(GM)

Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(GN) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(GO) to buy it.’

“Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(GP) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’

“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; so I bought the field(GQ) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[h] of silver.(GR) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(GS) had it witnessed,(GT) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruch(GU) son of Neriah,(GV) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed(GW) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(GX)

16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(GY) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:

17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(GZ) you have made the heavens and the earth(HA) by your great power and outstretched arm.(HB) Nothing is too hard(HC) for you. 18 You show love(HD) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(HE) of their children(HF) after them. Great and mighty God,(HG) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(HH) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(HI) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(HJ) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(HK) 20 You performed signs and wonders(HL) in Egypt(HM) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(HN) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(HO) and an outstretched arm(HP) and with great terror.(HQ) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(HR) 23 They came in and took possession(HS) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(HT) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(HU) on them.

24 “See how the siege ramps(HV) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(HW) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said(HX) has happened,(HY) as you now see. 25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field(HZ) with silver and have the transaction witnessed.(IA)’”

26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(IB) Is anything too hard for me?(IC) 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar(ID) king of Babylon, who will capture it.(IE) 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,(IF) along with the houses(IG) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings(IH) to other gods.(II)

30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;(IJ) indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger(IK) with what their hands have made,(IL) declares the Lord. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city(IM) has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove(IN) it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked(IO) me by all the evil(IP) they have done—they, their kings and officials,(IQ) their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs(IR) to me and not their faces; though I taught(IS) them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.(IT) 34 They set up their vile images(IU) in the house that bears my Name(IV) and defiled(IW) it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(IX) to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek,(IY) though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind(IZ)—that they should do such a detestable(JA) thing and so make Judah sin.(JB)

36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague(JC) it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather(JD) them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger(JE) and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.(JF) 38 They will be my people,(JG) and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness(JH) of heart and action, so that they will always fear(JI) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant(JJ) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire(JK) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.(JL) 41 I will rejoice(JM) in doing them good(JN) and will assuredly plant(JO) them in this land with all my heart and soul.(JP)

42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity(JQ) on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised(JR) them. 43 Once more fields will be bought(JS) in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate(JT) waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds(JU) will be signed, sealed and witnessed(JV) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(JW) because I will restore(JX) their fortunes,[i] declares the Lord.”

Promise of Restoration

33 While Jeremiah was still confined(JY) in the courtyard(JZ) of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time:(KA) “This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth,(KB) the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is his name:(KC) ‘Call(KD) to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable(KE) things you do not know.’ For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says about the houses in this city and the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used against the siege(KF) ramps(KG) and the sword in the fight with the Babylonians[j]: ‘They will be filled with the dead bodies of the people I will slay in my anger and wrath.(KH) I will hide my face(KI) from this city because of all its wickedness.

“‘Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal(KJ) my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace(KK) and security. I will bring Judah(KL) and Israel back from captivity[k](KM) and will rebuild(KN) them as they were before.(KO) I will cleanse(KP) them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive(KQ) all their sins of rebellion against me. Then this city will bring me renown,(KR) joy, praise(KS) and honor(KT) before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble(KU) at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.’

10 “This is what the Lord says: ‘You say about this place, “It is a desolate waste, without people or animals.”(KV) Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted,(KW) inhabited by neither people nor animals, there will be heard once more 11 the sounds of joy and gladness,(KX) the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings(KY) to the house of the Lord, saying,

“Give thanks to the Lord Almighty,
    for the Lord is good;(KZ)
    his love endures forever.”(LA)

For I will restore the fortunes(LB) of the land as they were before,(LC)’ says the Lord.

12 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In this place, desolate(LD) and without people or animals(LE)—in all its towns there will again be pastures for shepherds to rest their flocks.(LF) 13 In the towns of the hill(LG) country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(LH) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hand(LI) of the one who counts them,’ says the Lord.

14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise(LJ) I made to the people of Israel and Judah.

15 “‘In those days and at that time
    I will make a righteous(LK) Branch(LL) sprout from David’s line;(LM)
    he will do what is just and right in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved(LN)
    and Jerusalem will live in safety.(LO)
This is the name by which it[l] will be called:(LP)
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’(LQ)

17 For this is what the Lord says: ‘David will never fail(LR) to have a man to sit on the throne of Israel, 18 nor will the Levitical(LS) priests(LT) ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices.(LU)’”

19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day(LV) and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time,(LW) 21 then my covenant(LX) with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites(LY) who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.(LZ) 22 I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless(MA) as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’”

23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms[m](MB) he chose’? So they despise(MC) my people and no longer regard them as a nation.(MD) 25 This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not made my covenant with day and night(ME) and established the laws(MF) of heaven and earth,(MG) 26 then I will reject(MH) the descendants of Jacob(MI) and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes[n](MJ) and have compassion(MK) on them.’”
