The Beast from the Sea

13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [a]seashore.

Then I saw a (A)beast coming up out of the sea, having (B)ten horns and (C)seven heads, and on his horns were (D)ten crowns, and on his heads were (E)blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw was (F)like a leopard, and his feet were like those of (G)a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of (H)a lion. And the (I)dragon gave him his power and his (J)throne, and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been [b]fatally wounded, and his (K)fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth (L)was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the (M)dragon because he (N)gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “(O)Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” A mouth was given to him (P)speaking [c]arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for (Q)forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, (R)those who dwell in heaven.

It was also given to him to (S)make war with the [d]saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over (T)every tribe, people, language, and nation. All who (U)live on the earth will worship him, everyone (V)whose name has not been [e]written (W)since the foundation of the world in the (X)book of life of (Y)the Lamb who has been slaughtered. (Z)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (AA)If anyone [f]is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; (AB)if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is (AC)the [g]perseverance and the faith of the [h]saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then (AD)I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had (AE)two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a (AF)dragon. 12 He (AG)exercises all the authority of the first beast [i](AH)in his presence. And he makes (AI)the earth and those who live on it (AJ)worship the first beast, whose (AK)fatal wound was healed. 13 He (AL)performs great signs, so that he even makes (AM)fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. 14 And he (AN)deceives (AO)those who live on the earth because of (AP)the signs which it was given him to perform [j](AQ)in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the (AR)wound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even [k]speak and cause (AS)all who do not (AT)worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, (AU)the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, [l]to be given a (AV)mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the (AW)mark, either (AX)the name of the beast or (AY)the number of his name. 18 (AZ)Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that (BA)of a [m]man; and his number is [n]six hundred and sixty-six.

Rulers Denounced

And I said,

(A)Hear now, you [a]leaders of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel:
Is it not for you to (B)know justice?
You who hate good and love evil,
Who (C)tear off their skin from them
And their flesh from their bones,
Who (D)eat the flesh of my people,
Strip off their skin from them,
Smash their bones,
And (E)chop them up as for the pot,
And as meat in a cauldron!”
Then they will (F)cry out to the Lord,
But He will not answer them.
Instead, He will (G)hide His face from them at that time
Because they have (H)practiced evil deeds.

This is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who (I)lead my people astray:

When they have something to bite with their teeth,
They (J)cry out, “Peace!”
But against him who puts nothing in their mouths
They declare holy war.
Therefore it will be (K)night for you—without vision,
And darkness for you—without divination.
The (L)sun will go down on the prophets,
And the day will become dark over them.
The seers will be (M)put to shame,
And the (N)diviners will be ashamed.
Indeed, they will all (O)cover their [b]lips
Because there is (P)no answer from God.
On the other hand, (Q)I am filled with power—
With the Spirit of the Lord
And with justice and courage
To (R)make known to Jacob his rebellious act,
And to Israel his sin.
Now hear this, you (S)heads of the house of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel,
Who (T)despise justice
And twist everything that is straight,
10 Who (U)build Zion with bloodshed,
And Jerusalem with malice.
11 Her leaders pronounce (V)judgment for a bribe,
Her (W)priests teach for pay,
And her prophets divine for money.
Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,
(X)Is the Lord not in our midst?
Catastrophe will not come upon us.”
12 Therefore on account of you,
(Y)Zion will be plowed like a field,
(Z)Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins,
And the (AA)mountain of the [c]temple will become high places of a forest.

Peaceful Latter Days

And it will come about in the (AB)last days
That the (AC)mountain of the house of the Lord
Will be established [d]as the chief of the mountains.
It will be raised above the hills,
And the (AD)peoples will stream to it.
(AE)Many nations will come and say,
(AF)Come and let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord
And to the house of the God of Jacob,
So that (AG)He may teach us about His ways,
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For (AH)from Zion will go forth the law,
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
And He will (AI)judge between many peoples
And render decisions for mighty, [e]distant nations.
Then they will beat their swords (AJ)into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation will not lift a sword against nation,
And never again will they [f]train for war.
Instead, each of them will (AK)sit under his vine
And under his fig tree,
With (AL)no one to make them afraid,
Because the (AM)mouth of the Lord of armies has spoken.
Though all the peoples walk,
Each in the (AN)name of his god,
As for us, (AO)we will walk
In the name of the (AP)Lord our God forever and ever.

“On that day,” declares the Lord,
“I will assemble those who (AQ)limp
And (AR)gather the scattered,
Those whom I have afflicted.
I will make those who limp a (AS)remnant,
And those who [g]have strayed a mighty nation,
And the (AT)Lord will reign over them on Mount Zion
From now on and forever.
As for you, [h](AU)tower of the flock,
[i]Hill of the daughter of Zion,
To you it will come—
Yes, the (AV)former dominion will come,
The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.

“Now, why do you (AW)cry out loudly?
Is there no king among you,
Or has your (AX)counselor perished,
That agony has gripped you like a woman in childbirth?
10 (AY)Writhe and scream,
Daughter of Zion,
Like a woman in childbirth;
For now you will (AZ)go out of the city,
Live in the field,
And go to Babylon.
(BA)There you will be rescued,
(BB)There the Lord will redeem you
From the hand of your enemies.
11 And now (BC)many nations have been assembled against you
Who say, ‘Let her be defiled,
And let our eyes [j]gloat over Zion!’
12 But they do not (BD)know the thoughts of the Lord,
And they do not understand His plan;
For He has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 Arise and (BE)thresh, daughter of Zion,
For I will make your horn iron,
And I will make your hoofs bronze,
So that you may (BF)pulverize many peoples,
And (BG)dedicate to the Lord their unjust profit,
And their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.
