The Two Witnesses

11 Then there was given to me a [a](A)measuring rod like a staff; [b]and (B)someone said, “Get up and measure the [c]temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it. [d]Leave out the (C)courtyard which is outside the [e]temple and do not measure it, because (D)it has been given to the nations; and they will (E)trample (F)the holy city for (G)forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two (H)witnesses, and they will prophesy for (I)1,260 days, clothed in (J)sackcloth.” These are the (K)two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, (L)fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; and so if anyone wants to harm them, (M)he must be killed in this way. These have the power to (N)shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during (O)the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to (P)turn them into blood, and (Q)to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.

When they have finished their testimony, (R)the beast that comes up out of the (S)abyss will (T)make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie on the street of the (U)great city which [f]spiritually is called (V)Sodom and (W)Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. Those from (X)the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations will look at their dead [g]bodies for three and a half days, and [h](Y)will not allow their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb. 10 And (Z)those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will (AA)send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented (AB)those who live on the earth.

11 And after the three and a half days, (AC)the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them. 12 And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “(AD)Come up here.” And they (AE)went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And [i]at that time there was a great (AF)earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; [j]seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (AG)gave glory to the (AH)God of heaven.

14 The second (AI)woe has passed; behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet: Christ’s Reign Foreseen

15 Then the (AJ)seventh angel sounded; and there were (AK)loud voices in heaven, saying,

(AL)The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (AM)His [k]Christ; and (AN)He will reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders, who (AO)sit on their thrones before God, (AP)fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“We give You thanks, (AQ)Lord God, the Almighty, the One who is and who was, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to (AR)reign. 18 And (AS)the nations were enraged, and (AT)Your wrath came, and (AU)the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to [l]reward Your (AV)bond-servants the prophets and the [m]saints and those who fear Your name, (AW)the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 And (AX)the [n]temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and (AY)the ark of His covenant appeared in His [o]temple, and there were flashes of (AZ)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder, and an earthquake, and a (BA)great [p]hailstorm.

The Woman, Israel

12 A great (BB)sign appeared (BC)in heaven: (BD)a woman (BE)clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and she was pregnant and she *(BF)cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan

Then (BG)another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red (BH)dragon having (BI)seven heads and (BJ)ten horns, and on his heads were (BK)seven crowns. And his tail *swept away a (BL)third of the stars of heaven and (BM)hurled them to the earth. And the (BN)dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth (BO)he might devour her Child.

The Male Child, Christ

And (BP)she gave birth to a Son, a male, who is going to [q](BQ)rule all the [r]nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was (BR)caught up to God and to His throne. Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she *had a place prepared by God, so that there [s]she would be nourished for (BS)1,260 days.

The Angel, Michael

And there was war in heaven, (BT)Michael and his angels waging war with the (BU)dragon. The dragon and (BV)his angels waged war, and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great (BW)dragon was thrown down, the (BX)serpent of old who is called the devil and (BY)Satan, who (BZ)deceives the whole [t]world; he was (CA)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 Then I heard (CB)a loud voice in heaven, saying,

“Now the (CC)salvation, and the power, and the (CD)kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the (CE)accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 And they (CF)overcame him because of (CG)the blood of the Lamb and because of (CH)the word of their testimony, and they (CI)did not love their life even [u]when faced with death. 12 For this reason, (CJ)rejoice, you heavens and (CK)you who dwell in them. (CL)Woe to the earth and the sea, because (CM)the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only (CN)a short time.”

13 And when the (CO)dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted (CP)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 But the (CQ)two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly (CR)into the wilderness to her place, where she *was nourished for (CS)a time, times, and half a time, away from the presence of the serpent. 15 And the (CT)serpent hurled water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 [v]But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon had hurled out of his mouth. 17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to (CU)make war with the rest of her [w](CV)children, who (CW)keep the commandments of God and (CX)hold to the testimony of Jesus.

The Beast from the Sea

13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [x]seashore.

Then I saw a (CY)beast coming up out of the sea, having (CZ)ten horns and (DA)seven heads, and on his horns were (DB)ten crowns, and on his heads were (DC)blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw was (DD)like a leopard, and his feet were like those of (DE)a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of (DF)a lion. And the (DG)dragon gave him his power and his (DH)throne, and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been [y]fatally wounded, and his (DI)fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth (DJ)was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the (DK)dragon because he (DL)gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “(DM)Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” A mouth was given to him (DN)speaking [z]arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for (DO)forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, (DP)those who dwell in heaven.

It was also given to him to (DQ)make war with the [aa]saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over (DR)every tribe, people, language, and nation. All who (DS)live on the earth will worship him, everyone (DT)whose name has not been [ab]written (DU)since the foundation of the world in the (DV)book of life of (DW)the Lamb who has been slaughtered. (DX)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (DY)If anyone [ac]is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; (DZ)if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is (EA)the [ad]perseverance and the faith of the [ae]saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then (EB)I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had (EC)two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a (ED)dragon. 12 He (EE)exercises all the authority of the first beast [af](EF)in his presence. And he makes (EG)the earth and those who live on it (EH)worship the first beast, whose (EI)fatal wound was healed. 13 He (EJ)performs great signs, so that he even makes (EK)fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. 14 And he (EL)deceives (EM)those who live on the earth because of (EN)the signs which it was given him to perform [ag](EO)in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the (EP)wound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even [ah]speak and cause (EQ)all who do not (ER)worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, (ES)the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, [ai]to be given a (ET)mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the (EU)mark, either (EV)the name of the beast or (EW)the number of his name. 18 (EX)Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that (EY)of a [aj]man; and his number is [ak]six hundred and sixty-six.

The Lamb and the 144,000 on Mount Zion

14 Then I looked, and behold, (EZ)the Lamb was standing on (FA)Mount Zion, and with Him (FB)144,000 who had (FC)His name and the (FD)name of His Father written (FE)on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like (FF)the sound of many waters and like the (FG)sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of (FH)harpists playing on their harps. And they *sang [al](FI)a new song before the throne and before the (FJ)four living creatures and the (FK)elders; and (FL)no one was able to learn the song except the (FM)144,000 who had been (FN)purchased from the earth. (FO)These are the ones who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are celibate. These are the ones who (FP)follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been (FQ)purchased from mankind (FR)as first fruits to God and to the Lamb. And (FS)no lie was found in their mouths; they are (FT)blameless.

Vision of the Angel with the Gospel

And I saw another angel flying in (FU)midheaven with (FV)an eternal gospel to preach to (FW)those who [am]live on the earth, and to (FX)every nation, tribe, language, and people; and he said with a loud voice, “(FY)Fear God and (FZ)give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who (GA)made the heaven and the earth, and sea and (GB)springs of waters.”

And another angel, a second one, followed, saying, “[an](GC)Fallen, fallen is (GD)Babylon the great, she who has (GE)made all the nations drink of the (GF)wine of the [ao]passion of her sexual immorality.”

Doom for Worshipers of the Beast

Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone (GG)worships the beast and his (GH)image, and receives a (GI)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the (GJ)wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed [ap]in full strength (GK)in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with (GL)fire and [aq]brimstone in the presence of the (GM)holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the (GN)smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; (GO)they have no rest day and night, those who (GP)worship the beast and his (GQ)image, and [ar]whoever receives the (GR)mark of his name.” 12 Here is (GS)the [as]perseverance of the [at]saints who (GT)keep the commandments of God and [au](GU)their faith in Jesus.

13 And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write: ‘(GV)Blessed are the dead who (GW)die in the Lord from now on!’” “Yes,” (GX)says the Spirit, “so that they may (GY)rest from their labors, for their (GZ)deeds follow with them.”

The Harvest

14 Then I looked, and behold, a (HA)white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one (HB)like [av]a son of man, with a golden (HC)crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand. 15 And another angel (HD)came out of the [aw]temple, calling out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, “[ax](HE)Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the (HF)harvest of the earth [ay]is ripe.” 16 Then He who sat on the cloud [az]swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

17 And another angel (HG)came out of the [ba]temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, (HH)the one who has power over fire, came out from (HI)the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “[bb](HJ)Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters [bc]from the vine of the earth, (HK)because her grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel [bd]swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into (HL)the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And (HM)the wine press was trampled (HN)outside the city, and (HO)blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, [be]for a distance of [bf]1,600 stadia.

A Scene of Heaven

15 Then I saw (HP)another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, (HQ)seven angels who had (HR)seven plagues, which are (HS)the last, because in them the wrath of God is finished.

And I saw something like a (HT)sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who (HU)were victorious [bg]over the (HV)beast and (HW)his image and the (HX)number of his name, standing on the (HY)sea of glass, holding (HZ)harps of God. And they *sang the (IA)song of Moses, (IB)the bond-servant of God, and the (IC)song of the Lamb, saying,

(ID)Great and marvelous are Your works,
(IE)Lord God, the Almighty;
Righteous and true are Your ways,
(IF)King of the [bh]nations!
(IG)Who will not fear You, Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are holy;
For (IH)all the nations will come and worship before You,
For Your [bi](II)righteous acts have been revealed.”

After these things I looked, and (IJ)the [bj]temple of the (IK)tabernacle of testimony in heaven was opened, and the (IL)seven angels who had the seven plagues (IM)came out of the [bk]temple, clothed in [bl]linen, clean and bright, and (IN)their chests wrapped with golden sashes. And one of the (IO)four living creatures gave the (IP)seven angels seven (IQ)golden bowls full of the (IR)wrath of God, who (IS)lives forever and ever. And the [bm]temple was filled with (IT)smoke from the glory of God and from His power; and no one was able to enter the [bn]temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

The Bowls of Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from (IU)the [bo]temple, saying to the (IV)seven angels, “Go and (IW)pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl (IX)on the earth; and a harmful and painful (IY)sore [bp]afflicted the people (IZ)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The second angel poured out his bowl (JA)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living [bq]thing in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (JB)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (JC)became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “(JD)Righteous are You, (JE)the One who is and who was, O (JF)Holy One, because You (JG)judged these things; for they poured out (JH)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (JI)blood to drink. They [br]deserve it.” And I heard (JJ)the altar saying, “Yes, (JK)Lord God, the Almighty, (JL)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (JM)the sun, (JN)and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with [bs]fierce heat; and they (JO)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (JP)did not repent so as to (JQ)give Him glory.

10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (JR)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (JS)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they (JT)blasphemed the (JU)God of heaven because of their pain and their (JV)sores; and they (JW)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (JX)great river, the Euphrates; and (JY)its water was dried up, so that (JZ)the way would be prepared for the kings (KA)from the [bt]east.

Har-Magedon (Armageddon)

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (KB)dragon, and out of the mouth of the (KC)beast, and out of the mouth of the (KD)false prophet, three (KE)unclean spirits like (KF)frogs; 14 for they are (KG)spirits of demons, (KH)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (KI)entire [bu]world, to (KJ)gather them together for the war of the (KK)great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (KL)I am coming like a thief. (KM)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (KN)so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.”) 16 And they (KO)gathered them together to the place which (KP)in Hebrew is called (KQ)Har-Magedon.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (KR)the air, and a (KS)loud voice came out of the [bv](KT)temple from the throne, saying, “(KU)It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of (KV)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (KW)a great earthquake, (KX)such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. 19 (KY)The great city [bw]was split into three parts, and the cities of the [bx]nations fell. (KZ)Babylon the great was (LA)remembered in the sight of God, to give her (LB)the cup of the wine of [by]His fierce wrath. 20 And (LC)every island fled, and no mountains were found. 21 And (LD)huge [bz]hailstones, weighing about [ca]a talent each, *came down from heaven upon people; and people (LE)blasphemed God because of the (LF)plague of the hail, because [cb]the hailstone plague *was extremely [cc]severe.

The Doom of Babylon

17 (LG)Then one of the (LH)seven angels who had the (LI)seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you (LJ)the judgment of the (LK)great prostitute who (LL)sits on many waters, with whom (LM)the kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and (LN)those who live on the earth (LO)became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.” And (LP)he carried me away [cd](LQ)in the Spirit (LR)into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a (LS)scarlet beast, full of (LT)blasphemous names, having (LU)seven heads and ten horns. The woman (LV)was clothed in purple and scarlet, and [ce]adorned with gold, precious [cf]stones, and pearls, holding in her hand (LW)a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her sexual immorality, and on her forehead a name was written, [cg]a (LX)mystery: “(LY)BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF (LZ)THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” And I saw the woman drunk with (MA)the blood of the [ch]saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered [ci]greatly. And the angel said to me, “Why [cj]do you wonder? I will tell you the (MB)mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the (MC)seven heads and the ten horns.

(MD)The beast that you saw (ME)was, and is not, and is about to (MF)come up out of the (MG)abyss and [ck](MH)go to destruction. And (MI)those who live on the earth, (MJ)whose names have not been written in the book of life (MK)from the foundation of the world, will (ML)wonder when they see the beast, that he was, and is not, and will [cl]come. (MM)Here is the mind which has wisdom. The (MN)seven heads are seven mountains upon which the woman sits, 10 and they are seven (MO)kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. 11 The beast which (MP)was, and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he (MQ)goes to destruction. 12 The (MR)ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast (MS)for one hour. 13 These have (MT)one [cm]purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

Victory for the Lamb

14 These will wage (MU)war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will (MV)overcome them because He is (MW)Lord of lords and (MX)King of kings; and (MY)those who are with Him are the (MZ)called and chosen and faithful.”

15 And he *said to me, “The (NA)waters which you saw where the prostitute sits are (NB)peoples and multitudes, and nations and languages. 16 And the (NC)ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her (ND)desolate and (NE)naked, and will (NF)eat her flesh and will (NG)burn her up with fire. 17 For (NH)God has put it in their hearts to execute His [cn]purpose [co]by (NI)having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the (NJ)words of God will be fulfilled. 18 The woman whom you saw is (NK)the great city, which [cp]reigns over the kings of the earth.”

Babylon Is Fallen

18 After these things I saw another (NL)angel (NM)coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was (NN)illuminated from his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “[cq](NO)Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She (NP)has become a dwelling place of demons and a [cr]prison of every (NQ)unclean spirit, and a [cs]prison of every unclean and hateful bird. For all the nations have fallen because of the (NR)wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and (NS)the kings of the earth have committed acts of sexual immorality with her, and the (NT)merchants of the earth have become rich from the [ct]excessive wealth of her [cu](NU)luxury.”

I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “(NV)Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive any of her plagues; for her sins have [cv](NW)piled up as high as heaven, and God has (NX)remembered her offenses. (NY)Pay her back even as she has paid, and [cw]give back to her double according to her deeds; in the (NZ)cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. (OA)To the extent that she glorified herself and (OB)lived luxuriously, to the same extent give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘(OC)I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ For this reason (OD)in one day her plagues will come, [cx]plague and mourning and famine, and she will be (OE)burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her (OF)is strong.

Grief over Babylon

“And (OG)the kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and (OH)lived luxuriously with her, will (OI)weep and mourn over her when they (OJ)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (OK)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(OL)Woe, woe, (OM)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (ON)one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the (OO)merchants of the earth (OP)weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more— 12 cargo of (OQ)gold, silver, precious [cy]stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, [cz]bronze, iron, and marble; 13 cinnamon, [da]spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, [db]slaves, and (OR)human lives. 14 The fruit [dc]you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them. 15 The (OS)merchants of (OT)these things, who became rich from her, will (OU)stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘(OV)Woe, woe, (OW)the great city, she who (OX)was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and [dd]adorned with gold, precious [de]stones, and pearls; 17 for in (OY)one hour such great wealth has been laid (OZ)waste!’ And (PA)every shipmaster and every [df]passenger and sailor, and all who [dg]make their living by the sea, (PB)stood at a distance, 18 and were (PC)crying out as they (PD)saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘(PE)What city is like (PF)the great city?’ 19 And they threw (PG)dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘(PH)Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea (PI)became rich from her prosperity, for in (PJ)one hour she has been laid (PK)waste!’ 20 (PL)Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [dh]saints and (PM)apostles and prophets, because (PN)God has [di]pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then [dj]a (PO)strong angel (PP)picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, (PQ)the great city, be thrown down with violence, and (PR)will never be found again. 22 And (PS)the sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again; and no craftsman of any craft will ever be found in you again; and the (PT)sound of a mill will never be heard in you again; 23 and the light of a lamp will never shine in you again; and the (PU)voice of the groom and bride will never be heard in you again; for your (PV)merchants were the powerful people of the earth, because all the nations were deceived (PW)by your witchcraft. 24 And in her was found the (PX)blood of prophets and of [dk]saints, and of (PY)all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”

The Fourfold Hallelujah

19 After these things I heard something like a (PZ)loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

(QA)Hallelujah! (QB)Salvation, (QC)glory, and power belong to our God, (QD)because His (QE)judgments are (QF)true and righteous; for He has judged the (QG)great prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her sexual immorality, and He has (QH)avenged the blood of His bond-servants [dl]on her.” And a second time they said, “(QI)Hallelujah! (QJ)Her smoke rises forever and ever.” And the (QK)twenty-four elders and the (QL)four living creatures (QM)fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying, “(QN)Amen. (QO)Hallelujah!” And a voice came from the throne, saying,

(QP)Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, (QQ)you who fear Him, the small and the great.” Then I heard something like (QR)the voice of a great multitude and like (QS)the sound of many waters, and like the (QT)sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,

(QU)Hallelujah! For the (QV)Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.

Marriage of the Lamb

Let’s rejoice and be glad and (QW)give the glory to Him, because (QX)the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His [dm](QY)bride has prepared herself.” It was given to her to clothe herself in (QZ)fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the (RA)righteous acts of the [dn]saints.

Then (RB)he *said to me, “(RC)Write: ‘(RD)Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.’” And he *said to me, “(RE)These are the true words of God.” 10 Then (RF)I fell at his feet to worship him. (RG)But he *said to me, “[do]Do not do that; I am a (RH)fellow servant of yours and your brothers and sisters who (RI)hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

The Coming of Christ

11 And I saw (RJ)heaven opened, and behold, a (RK)white horse, and He who sat on it is called (RL)Faithful and True, and in (RM)righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His (RN)eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many (RO)crowns; and He has a (RP)name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a (RQ)robe dipped in blood, and His name is called (RR)The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in (RS)fine linen, (RT)white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 (RU)From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that (RV)with it He may strike down the nations, and He will [dp](RW)rule them with a rod of iron; and (RX)He treads the [dq]wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has (RY)a name written: “(RZ)KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

17 Then I saw [dr]an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to (SA)all the birds that fly in (SB)midheaven, “(SC)Come, assemble for the great feast of God, 18 so that you may (SD)eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, (SE)both free and slaves, and (SF)small and great.”

19 And I saw (SG)the beast and (SH)the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who (SI)sat on the horse, and against His army.

Doom of the Beast and False Prophet

20 And the beast was seized, and with him the (SJ)false prophet who (SK)performed the signs [ds](SL)in his presence, by which he (SM)deceived those who had received the (SN)mark of the beast and those who (SO)worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the (SP)lake of (SQ)fire, which burns with [dt]brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which (SR)came from the mouth of Him who (SS)sat on the horse, and (ST)all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Satan Bound

20 Then I saw (SU)an angel coming down from heaven, holding the (SV)key of the abyss and a great chain [du]in his hand. And he took hold of the (SW)dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and (SX)bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the (SY)abyss and shut it and (SZ)sealed it over him, so that he would (TA)not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

Then I saw (TB)thrones, and (TC)they sat on them, and (TD)judgment was given to them. And I saw (TE)the souls of those who had been beheaded because of [dv]their (TF)testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not (TG)worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the (TH)mark on their foreheads and on their hands; and they (TI)came to life and (TJ)reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. (TK)This is the first resurrection. (TL)Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the (TM)second death has no power, but they will be (TN)priests of God and of Christ, and will (TO)reign with Him for a thousand years.

Satan Freed and Doomed

When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be (TP)released from his prison, and will come out to (TQ)deceive the nations which are at the (TR)four corners of the earth, (TS)Gog and Magog, to (TT)gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the (TU)sand of the [dw]seashore. And they (TV)came up on the [dx]broad plain of the earth and surrounded the (TW)camp of the [dy]saints and the (TX)beloved city, and (TY)fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And (TZ)the devil who (UA)deceived them was thrown into the (UB)lake of fire and [dz]brimstone, where the (UC)beast and the (UD)false prophet are also; and they will be (UE)tormented day and night forever and ever.

Judgment at the Throne of God

11 Then I saw a great white (UF)throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose [ea]presence (UG)earth and heaven fled, and (UH)no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the (UI)great and the small, standing before the throne, and [eb](UJ)books were opened; and another [ec]book was opened, which is (UK)the book of life; and the dead (UL)were judged from the things which were written in the [ed]books, (UM)according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and (UN)Death and Hades (UO)gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them (UP)according to their deeds. 14 Then (UQ)Death and Hades were thrown into (UR)the lake of fire. This is the (US)second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if [ee]anyone’s name was not found written in (UT)the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The New Heaven and Earth

21 Then I saw (UU)a new heaven and a new earth; for (UV)the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw (UW)the holy city, (UX)new Jerusalem, (UY)coming down out of heaven from God, (UZ)prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, (VA)the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will (VB)dwell among them, and they shall be His [ef]people, and God Himself will be among them[eg], and He will (VC)wipe away every tear from their eyes; and (VD)there will no longer be any death; (VE)there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; (VF)the first things have passed away.”

And (VG)He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am (VH)making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for (VI)these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “[eh](VJ)It is done. I am the (VK)Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. (VL)I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the (VM)water of life, without cost. (VN)The one who overcomes will inherit these things, and (VO)I will be his God and he will be My son. (VP)But for the cowardly, and [ei]unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and sexually immoral persons, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in (VQ)the lake that burns with fire and [ej]brimstone, which is the (VR)second death.”

(VS)Then one of the seven angels who had the (VT)seven bowls, [ek]full of the (VU)seven last plagues, came and spoke with me, saying, “(VV)Come here, I will show you the (VW)bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

The New Jerusalem

10 And (VX)he carried me away [el](VY)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (VZ)the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having (WA)the glory of God. Her [em]brilliance was like a very valuable stone, like a (WB)stone of (WC)crystal-clear jasper. 12 [en]It had a great and high wall, [eo](WD)with twelve (WE)gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on the gates, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. 14 And the wall of the city had (WF)twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the (WG)twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 The one who spoke with me had a [ep]gold measuring (WH)rod to measure the city, its (WI)gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the [eq]rod, [er]twelve thousand stadia; its length, width, and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, [es]144 cubits, by (WJ)human [et]measurements, which are also (WK)angelic measurements. 18 The material of the wall was (WL)jasper; and the city was (WM)pure gold, like [eu]clear (WN)glass. 19 (WO)The foundation stones of the city wall were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was (WP)jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, (WQ)emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, (WR)sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve (WS)gates were twelve (WT)pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was (WU)pure gold, like transparent (WV)glass.

22 I saw (WW)no [ev]temple in it, for the (WX)Lord God the Almighty and the (WY)Lamb are its [ew]temple. 23 And the city (WZ)has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for (XA)the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the (XB)Lamb. 24 (XC)The nations will walk by its light, and the (XD)kings of the earth [ex]will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for (XE)there will be no night there) (XF)its gates (XG)will never be closed; 26 and (XH)they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and (XI)nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [ey]whose names are (XJ)written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The River and the Tree of Life

22 And (XK)he showed me a (XL)river of the (XM)water of life, [ez]clear (XN)as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [fa]the Lamb, in the middle of (XO)its street. (XP)On either side of the river was (XQ)the tree of life, bearing twelve [fb]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (XR)There will no longer be any curse; and (XS)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will (XT)serve Him; they will (XU)see His face, and His (XV)name will be on their (XW)foreheads. And (XX)there will no longer be any night; and they [fc]will not have need (XY)of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will (XZ)reign forever and ever.

And (YA)he said to me, “(YB)These words are faithful and true”; and the Lord, the (YC)God of the spirits of the prophets, (YD)sent His angel to show His bond-servants the things which must soon take place.

“And behold, (YE)I am coming quickly. (YF)Blessed is the one who [fd]keeps (YG)the words of the prophecy of this book.”

(YH)I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, (YI)I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. And (YJ)he *said to me, “[fe]Do not do that; I am a (YK)fellow servant of yours and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who [ff]keep the words of (YL)this book. Worship God!”

The Final Message

10 And he *said to me, “(YM)Do not seal up (YN)the words of the prophecy of this book, (YO)for the time is near. 11 (YP)Let the one who does wrong still do wrong, and the one who is filthy still be filthy; and let the one who is righteous still practice righteousness, and the one who is holy still keep himself holy.”

12 “Behold, (YQ)I am coming quickly, and My (YR)reward is with Me, (YS)to reward each one as his work [fg]deserves. 13 I am the (YT)Alpha and the Omega, (YU)the first and the last, (YV)the beginning and the end.”

14 Blessed are those who (YW)wash their robes, so that they will have the right to (YX)the tree of life, and may (YY)enter the city by the (YZ)gates. 15 (ZA)Outside are the (ZB)dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral persons, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

16 (ZC)I, Jesus, have sent (ZD)My angel to testify to you of these things [fh](ZE)for the churches. I am (ZF)the root and the (ZG)descendant of David, the bright (ZH)morning star.”

17 The (ZI)Spirit and the (ZJ)bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And (ZK)let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the (ZL)water of life without cost.

18 I testify to everyone who hears (ZM)the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone (ZN)adds to them, God will add to him (ZO)the plagues that are written in (ZP)this book; 19 and if anyone (ZQ)takes away from the (ZR)words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from (ZS)the tree of life and [fi]from the holy city, (ZT)which are written in this book.

20 He who (ZU)testifies to these things says, “Yes, (ZV)I am coming quickly.” Amen. (ZW)Come, Lord Jesus.

21 (ZX)The grace of the Lord Jesus be with [fj]all. Amen.

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(A) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(B) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(C) They will trample on the holy city(D) for 42 months.(E) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(F) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(G) clothed in sackcloth.”(H) They are “the two olive trees”(I) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[a](J) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(K) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(L) They have power to shut up the heavens(M) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(N) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(O) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(P) that comes up from the Abyss(Q) will attack them,(R) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(S)—which is figuratively called Sodom(T) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(U) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(V) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(W) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(X) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(Y) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(Z) the breath[b] of life from God entered them,(AA) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(AB) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(AC) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(AD) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(AE) to the God of heaven.(AF)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(AG)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(AH) and there were loud voices(AI) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(AJ)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(AK)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(AL) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(AM) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(AN) to you, Lord God Almighty,(AO)
the One who is and who was,(AP)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(AQ)
18 The nations were angry,(AR)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AS)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AT)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(AU)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(AV) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AW) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AX) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AY)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(AZ) appeared in heaven:(BA) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(BB) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(BC) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(BD) an enormous red dragon(BE) with seven heads(BF) and ten horns(BG) and seven crowns(BH) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(BI) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(BJ) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(BK) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[c](BL) And her child was snatched up(BM) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(BN)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(BO) and his angels fought against the dragon,(BP) and the dragon and his angels(BQ) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(BR) called the devil,(BS) or Satan,(BT) who leads the whole world astray.(BU) He was hurled to the earth,(BV) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(BW) say:

“Now have come the salvation(BX) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(BY)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(BZ) him
by the blood of the Lamb(CA)
and by the word of their testimony;(CB)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(CC)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(CD)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(CE) to the earth and the sea,(CF)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(CG) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(CH) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(CI) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(CJ) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(CK) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(CL) against the rest of her offspring(CM)—those who keep God’s commands(CN) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(CO)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[d] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.(CP) It had ten horns and seven heads,(CQ) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.(CR) The beast I saw resembled a leopard,(CS) but had feet like those of a bear(CT) and a mouth like that of a lion.(CU) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.(CV) One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.(CW) The whole world was filled with wonder(CX) and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like(CY) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies(CZ) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.(DA) It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.(DB) It was given power to wage war(DC) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.(DD) All inhabitants of the earth(DE) will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,(DF) the Lamb(DG) who was slain from the creation of the world.[e](DH)

Whoever has ears, let them hear.(DI)

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[f] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[g](DJ)

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness(DK) on the part of God’s people.(DL)

The Beast out of the Earth

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth.(DM) It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.(DN) 12 It exercised all the authority(DO) of the first beast on its behalf,(DP) and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,(DQ) whose fatal wound had been healed.(DR) 13 And it performed great signs,(DS) even causing fire to come down from heaven(DT) to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs(DU) it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived(DV) the inhabitants of the earth.(DW) It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.(DX) 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship(DY) the image to be killed.(DZ) 16 It also forced all people, great and small,(EA) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,(EB) 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,(EC) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.(ED)

18 This calls for wisdom.(EE) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[h](EF) That number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb,(EG) standing on Mount Zion,(EH) and with him 144,000(EI) who had his name and his Father’s name(EJ) written on their foreheads.(EK) And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters(EL) and like a loud peal of thunder.(EM) The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.(EN) And they sang a new song(EO) before the throne and before the four living creatures(EP) and the elders.(EQ) No one could learn the song except the 144,000(ER) who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins.(ES) They follow the Lamb wherever he goes.(ET) They were purchased from among mankind(EU) and offered as firstfruits(EV) to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths;(EW) they are blameless.(EX)

The Three Angels

Then I saw another angel flying in midair,(EY) and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth(EZ)—to every nation, tribe, language and people.(FA) He said in a loud voice, “Fear God(FB) and give him glory,(FC) because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made(FD) the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”(FE)

A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[i](FF) which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”(FG)

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast(FH) and its image(FI) and receives its mark on their forehead(FJ) or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,(FK) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.(FL) They will be tormented with burning sulfur(FM) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.(FN) There will be no rest day or night(FO) for those who worship the beast and its image,(FP) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”(FQ) 12 This calls for patient endurance(FR) on the part of the people of God(FS) who keep his commands(FT) and remain faithful to Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord(FU) from now on.”

“Yes,” says the Spirit,(FV) “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud,(FW) and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[j](FX) with a crown(FY) of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple(FZ) and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle(GA) and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest(GB) of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.(GC) 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar(GD) and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle(GE) and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.(GF) 20 They were trampled in the winepress(GG) outside the city,(GH) and blood(GI) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[k]

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

15 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign:(GJ) seven angels(GK) with the seven last plagues(GL)—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. And I saw what looked like a sea of glass(GM) glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious(GN) over the beast(GO) and its image(GP) and over the number of its name.(GQ) They held harps(GR) given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant(GS) Moses(GT) and of the Lamb:(GU)

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,(GV)
    Lord God Almighty.(GW)
Just and true are your ways,(GX)
    King of the nations.[l]
Who will not fear you, Lord,(GY)
and bring glory to your name?(GZ)
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,(HA)
for your righteous acts(HB) have been revealed.”[m]

After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple(HC)—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law(HD)—and it was opened.(HE) Out of the temple(HF) came the seven angels with the seven plagues.(HG) They were dressed in clean, shining linen(HH) and wore golden sashes around their chests.(HI) Then one of the four living creatures(HJ) gave to the seven angels(HK) seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever.(HL) And the temple was filled with smoke(HM) from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple(HN) until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple(HO) saying to the seven angels,(HP) “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”(HQ)

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,(HR) and ugly, festering sores(HS) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.(HT)

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.(HU)

The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water,(HV) and they became blood.(HW) Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:

“You are just in these judgments,(HX) O Holy One,(HY)
you who are and who were;(HZ)
for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,(IA)
and you have given them blood to drink(IB) as they deserve.”

And I heard the altar(IC) respond:

“Yes, Lord God Almighty,(ID)
true and just are your judgments.”(IE)

The fourth angel(IF) poured out his bowl on the sun,(IG) and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire.(IH) They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God,(II) who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent(IJ) and glorify him.(IK)

10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,(IL) and its kingdom was plunged into darkness.(IM) People gnawed their tongues in agony 11 and cursed(IN) the God of heaven(IO) because of their pains and their sores,(IP) but they refused to repent of what they had done.(IQ)

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,(IR) and its water was dried up to prepare the way(IS) for the kings from the East.(IT) 13 Then I saw three impure spirits(IU) that looked like frogs;(IV) they came out of the mouth of the dragon,(IW) out of the mouth of the beast(IX) and out of the mouth of the false prophet.(IY) 14 They are demonic spirits(IZ) that perform signs,(JA) and they go out to the kings of the whole world,(JB) to gather them for the battle(JC) on the great day(JD) of God Almighty.

15 “Look, I come like a thief!(JE) Blessed is the one who stays awake(JF) and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”(JG)

16 Then they gathered the kings together(JH) to the place that in Hebrew(JI) is called Armageddon.(JJ)

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,(JK) and out of the temple(JL) came a loud voice(JM) from the throne, saying, “It is done!”(JN) 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder(JO) and a severe earthquake.(JP) No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth,(JQ) so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city(JR) split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered(JS) Babylon the Great(JT) and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.(JU) 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.(JV) 21 From the sky huge hailstones,(JW) each weighing about a hundred pounds,[n] fell on people. And they cursed God(JX) on account of the plague of hail,(JY) because the plague was so terrible.

Babylon, the Prostitute on the Beast

17 One of the seven angels(JZ) who had the seven bowls(KA) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment(KB) of the great prostitute,(KC) who sits by many waters.(KD) With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”(KE)

Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit(KF) into a wilderness.(KG) There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet(KH) beast that was covered with blasphemous names(KI) and had seven heads and ten horns.(KJ) The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.(KK) She held a golden cup(KL) in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.(KM) The name written on her forehead was a mystery:(KN)

babylon the great(KO)

the mother of prostitutes(KP)

and of the abominations of the earth.

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people,(KQ) the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.

When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery(KR) of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.(KS) The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss(KT) and go to its destruction.(KU) The inhabitants of the earth(KV) whose names have not been written in the book of life(KW) from the creation of the world will be astonished(KX) when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.

“This calls for a mind with wisdom.(KY) The seven heads(KZ) are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not,(LA) is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

12 “The ten horns(LB) you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour(LC) will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.(LD) 14 They will wage war(LE) against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over(LF) them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings(LG)—and with him will be his called, chosen(LH) and faithful followers.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters(LI) you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.(LJ) 16 The beast and the ten horns(LK) you saw will hate the prostitute.(LL) They will bring her to ruin(LM) and leave her naked;(LN) they will eat her flesh(LO) and burn her with fire.(LP) 17 For God has put it into their hearts(LQ) to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,(LR) until God’s words are fulfilled.(LS) 18 The woman you saw is the great city(LT) that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel(LU) coming down from heaven.(LV) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(LW) With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[o](LX)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(LY)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(LZ)
For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(MA)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(MB)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(MC) from her excessive luxuries.”(MD)

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’[p](ME)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(MF)
for her sins are piled up to heaven,(MG)
and God has remembered(MH) her crimes.
Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(MI) double(MJ) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(MK)
Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(ML)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[q]
    I will never mourn.’(MM)
Therefore in one day(MN) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(MO)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(MP) and shared her luxury(MQ) see the smoke of her burning,(MR) they will weep and mourn over her.(MS) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(MT) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(MU)
    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(MV) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(MW) of the earth will weep and mourn(MX) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(MY) 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(MZ) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(NA)

14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(NB) will stand far off,(NC) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(ND) 16 and cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(NE)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(NF)
17 In one hour(NG) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(NH)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(NI) will stand far off.(NJ) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(NK) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(NL)?’(NM) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(NN) and with weeping and mourning(NO) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(NP)
where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(NQ)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(NR)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(NS)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(NT) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(NU) and said:

“With such violence
the great city(NV) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(NW)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(NX)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(NY)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(NZ)
By your magic spell(OA) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(OB)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(OC)

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude(OD) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah!(OE)
Salvation(OF) and glory and power(OG) belong to our God,
for true and just are his judgments.(OH)
He has condemned the great prostitute(OI)
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”(OJ)

And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!(OK)
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”(OL)

The twenty-four elders(OM) and the four living creatures(ON) fell down(OO) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”(OP)

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,(OQ)
you who fear him,
    both great and small!”(OR)

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,(OS) like the roar of rushing waters(OT) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!(OU)
For our Lord God Almighty(OV) reigns.(OW)
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!(OX)
For the wedding of the Lamb(OY) has come,
and his bride(OZ) has made herself ready.
Fine linen,(PA) bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts(PB) of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me,(PC) “Write this:(PD) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!”(PE) And he added, “These are the true words of God.”(PF)

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.(PG) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!(PH) For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”(PI)

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open(PJ) and there before me was a white horse, whose rider(PK) is called Faithful and True.(PL) With justice he judges and wages war.(PM) 12 His eyes are like blazing fire,(PN) and on his head are many crowns.(PO) He has a name written on him(PP) that no one knows but he himself.(PQ) 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,(PR) and his name is the Word of God.(PS) 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,(PT) white(PU) and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword(PV) with which to strike down(PW) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[r](PX) He treads the winepress(PY) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:(PZ)

king of kings and lord of lords.(QA)

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds(QB) flying in midair,(QC) “Come,(QD) gather together for the great supper of God,(QE) 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,(QF) free and slave,(QG) great and small.”(QH)

19 Then I saw the beast(QI) and the kings of the earth(QJ) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse(QK) and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet(QL) who had performed the signs(QM) on its behalf.(QN) With these signs he had deluded(QO) those who had received the mark of the beast(QP) and worshiped its image.(QQ) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake(QR) of burning sulfur.(QS) 21 The rest were killed with the sword(QT) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,(QU) and all the birds(QV) gorged themselves on their flesh.

The Thousand Years

20 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven,(QW) having the key(QX) to the Abyss(QY) and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan,(QZ) and bound him for a thousand years.(RA) He threw him into the Abyss,(RB) and locked and sealed(RC) it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations(RD) anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

I saw thrones(RE) on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.(RF) And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded(RG) because of their testimony about Jesus(RH) and because of the word of God.(RI) They[s] had not worshiped the beast(RJ) or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands.(RK) They came to life and reigned(RL) with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection.(RM) Blessed(RN) and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death(RO) has no power over them, but they will be priests(RP) of God and of Christ and will reign with him(RQ) for a thousand years.

The Judgment of Satan

When the thousand years are over,(RR) Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations(RS) in the four corners of the earth(RT)—Gog and Magog(RU)—and to gather them for battle.(RV) In number they are like the sand on the seashore.(RW) They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded(RX) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.(RY) But fire came down from heaven(RZ) and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them,(SA) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,(SB) where the beast(SC) and the false prophet(SD) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.(SE)

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne(SF) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,(SG) and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,(SH) standing before the throne, and books were opened.(SI) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.(SJ) The dead were judged(SK) according to what they had done(SL) as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades(SM) gave up the dead(SN) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.(SO) 14 Then death(SP) and Hades(SQ) were thrown into the lake of fire.(SR) The lake of fire is the second death.(SS) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life(ST) was thrown into the lake of fire.

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[t](SU) for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,(SV) and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City,(SW) the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,(SX) prepared as a bride(SY) beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.(SZ) They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.(TA) ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.(TB) There will be no more death’[u](TC) or mourning or crying or pain,(TD) for the old order of things has passed away.”(TE)

He who was seated on the throne(TF) said, “I am making everything new!”(TG) Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”(TH)

He said to me: “It is done.(TI) I am the Alpha and the Omega,(TJ) the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost(TK) from the spring of the water of life.(TL) Those who are victorious(TM) will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.(TN) But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars(TO)—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.(TP) This is the second death.”(TQ)

The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb

One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues(TR) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride,(TS) the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away(TT) in the Spirit(TU) to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.(TV) 11 It shone with the glory of God,(TW) and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper,(TX) clear as crystal.(TY) 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates,(TZ) and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.(UA) 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations,(UB) and on them were the names of the twelve apostles(UC) of the Lamb.

15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod(UD) of gold to measure the city, its gates(UE) and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia[v] in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human(UF) measurement, and it was 144 cubits[w] thick.[x] 18 The wall was made of jasper,(UG) and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.(UH) 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone.(UI) The first foundation was jasper,(UJ) the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby,(UK) the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[y] 21 The twelve gates(UL) were twelve pearls,(UM) each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.(UN)

22 I did not see a temple(UO) in the city, because the Lord God Almighty(UP) and the Lamb(UQ) are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God(UR) gives it light,(US) and the Lamb(UT) is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.(UU) 25 On no day will its gates(UV) ever be shut,(UW) for there will be no night there.(UX) 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.(UY) 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful,(UZ) but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.(VA)

Eden Restored

22 Then the angel showed me the river(VB) of the water of life,(VC) as clear as crystal,(VD) flowing(VE) from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life,(VF) bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.(VG) No longer will there be any curse.(VH) The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.(VI) They will see his face,(VJ) and his name will be on their foreheads.(VK) There will be no more night.(VL) They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.(VM) And they will reign for ever and ever.(VN)

John and the Angel

The angel said to me,(VO) “These words are trustworthy and true.(VP) The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets,(VQ) sent his angel(VR) to show his servants the things that must soon take place.”

“Look, I am coming soon!(VS) Blessed(VT) is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.”(VU)

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.(VV) And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet(VW) of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll.(VX) Worship God!”(VY)

10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up(VZ) the words of the prophecy of this scroll,(WA) because the time is near.(WB) 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.”(WC)

Epilogue: Invitation and Warning

12 “Look, I am coming soon!(WD) My reward is with me,(WE) and I will give to each person according to what they have done.(WF) 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,(WG) the First and the Last,(WH) the Beginning and the End.(WI)

14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes,(WJ) that they may have the right to the tree of life(WK) and may go through the gates(WL) into the city.(WM) 15 Outside(WN) are the dogs,(WO) those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 “I, Jesus,(WP) have sent my angel(WQ) to give you[z] this testimony for the churches.(WR) I am the Root(WS) and the Offspring of David,(WT) and the bright Morning Star.”(WU)

17 The Spirit(WV) and the bride(WW) say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.(WX)

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll:(WY) If anyone adds anything to them,(WZ) God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll.(XA) 19 And if anyone takes words away(XB) from this scroll of prophecy,(XC) God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life(XD) and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.

20 He who testifies to these things(XE) says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”(XF)

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.(XG)

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people.(XH) Amen.
