Philippians 3

Do Not Trust in Who You Are or What You Can Do
3 Further, my brothers and sisters, be joyful because you belong to the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write about some important matters to you again. If you know about them, you will have a safe path to follow. 2 Watch out for those dogs. They are people who do evil things. When they circumcise, it is nothing more than a useless cutting of the body. 3 But we have been truly circumcised. We serve God by the power of his Spirit. We boast about what Christ Jesus has done. We don’t put our trust in who we are or what we can do. 4 I have many reasons to trust in who I am and what I have done. Someone else may think they have reasons to trust in these things. But I have even more.
5 I was circumcised on the eighth day. I am part of the people of Israel. I am from the tribe of Benjamin. I am a pure Hebrew. As far as the law is concerned, I am a Pharisee. 6 As far as being committed is concerned, I opposed and attacked the church. As far as keeping the law is concerned, I kept it perfectly.
7 I thought things like that were really something great. But now I consider them to be nothing because of Christ. 8 Even more, I consider everything to be nothing compared to knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. To know him is worth much more than anything else. Because of him I have lost everything. But I consider all of it to be garbage so I can know Christ better. 9 I want to be joined to him. Being right with God does not come from my obeying the law. It comes because I believe in Christ. It comes from God because of faith. 10 I want to know Christ better. Yes, I want to know the power that raised him from the dead. I want to join him in his sufferings. I want to become like him by sharing in his death. 11 Then by God’s grace I will rise from the dead.
12 I have not yet received all these things. I have not yet reached my goal. Christ Jesus took hold of me so that I could reach that goal. So I keep pushing myself forward to reach it. 13 Brothers and sisters, I don’t consider that I have taken hold of it yet. But here is the one thing I do. I forget what is behind me. I push hard toward what is ahead of me. 14 I push myself forward toward the goal to win the prize. God has appointed me to win it. The heavenly prize is Christ Jesus himself.
Following Paul’s Example
15 So all of us who are grown up in the faith should see things this way. Maybe you think differently about something. But God will make it clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already reached.
17 Brothers and sisters, join together in following my example. You have us as a model. So pay close attention to those who live as we do. 18 I have told you these things many times before. Now I tell you again with tears in my eyes. Many people live like enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 The only thing they have coming to them is death. Their stomach is their god. They brag about what they should be ashamed of. They think only about earthly things. 20 But we are citizens of heaven. And we can hardly wait for a Savior from there. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He has the power to bring everything under his control. By his power he will change our earthly bodies. They will become like his glorious body.

3 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

The Message
To Know Him Personally
3 And that’s about it, friends. Be glad in God!
I don’t mind repeating what I have written in earlier letters, and I hope you don’t mind hearing it again. Better safe than sorry—so here goes.
2-6 Steer clear of the barking dogs, those religious busybodies, all bark and no bite. All they’re interested in is appearances—knife-happy circumcisers, I call them. The real believers are the ones the Spirit of God leads to work away at this ministry, filling the air with Christ’s praise as we do it. We couldn’t carry this off by our own efforts, and we know it—even though we can list what many might think are impressive credentials. You know my pedigree: a legitimate birth, circumcised on the eighth day; an Israelite from the elite tribe of Benjamin; a strict and devout adherent to God’s law; a fiery defender of the purity of my religion, even to the point of persecuting the church; a meticulous observer of everything set down in God’s law Book.
7-9 The very credentials these people are waving around as something special, I’m tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God’s righteousness.
10-11 I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself. If there was any way to get in on the resurrection from the dead, I wanted to do it.
Focused on the Goal
12-14 I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.
15-16 So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.
17-19 Stick with me, friends. Keep track of those you see running this same course, headed for this same goal. There are many out there taking other paths, choosing other goals, and trying to get you to go along with them. I’ve warned you of them many times; sadly, I’m having to do it again. All they want is easy street. They hate Christ’s Cross. But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods; belches are their praise; all they can think of is their appetites.
20-21 But there’s far more to life for us. We’re citizens of high heaven! We’re waiting the arrival of the Savior, the Master, Jesus Christ, who will transform our earthy bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He’ll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him.

3 Was auch immer geschehen mag, meine lieben Brüder und Schwestern: Freut euch, weil ihr zum Herrn gehört! Ich werde nicht müde, euch immer wieder dasselbe zu sagen; weiß ich doch, dass es euch Gewissheit gibt.
2 Hütet euch aber vor allen, die versuchen, eure Gemeinde zu zerstören! Sie sind wie bösartige Hunde, diese falschen Lehrer, die euch einreden wollen, dass ihr euch beschneiden lassen müsst, um zu Gottes Volk zu gehören. Dann können sie euch auch gleich verstümmeln! 3 Denn die wahre Beschneidung findet nicht am Körper statt, sondern besteht darin, dass Gott uns seinen Geist geschenkt hat und wir ihm dienen. Wir sind stolz, zu Jesus Christus zu gehören, und verlassen uns nicht länger auf das, was wir selbst tun können.
4 Ich selbst könnte mich mit größerem Recht als manch anderer auf diese Vorzüge berufen, wenn es wirklich darauf ankäme: 5 Ich wurde am achten Tag nach meiner Geburt beschnitten, wie es das Gesetz vorschreibt. Ich stamme aus dem Volk Israel und sogar aus dem Stamm Benjamin. Von Geburt an bin ich Hebräer wie schon alle meine Vorfahren. Außerdem gehörte ich zu den Pharisäern, der Gruppe, die am strengsten darauf achtet, dass Gottes Gesetz eingehalten wird. 6 Ich setzte mich mit großem Eifer für Gott ein und verfolgte deshalb sogar die christliche Gemeinde. Die Regeln des Gesetzes erfüllte ich bis in alle Einzelheiten, so dass niemand mir etwas vorwerfen konnte.
7 Aber seit ich Christus kenne, ist für mich alles wertlos, was ich früher für so wichtig gehalten habe. 8 Denn das ist mir klar geworden: Gegenüber dem unvergleichlichen Gewinn, dass Jesus Christus mein Herr ist, hat alles andere seinen Wert verloren. Um seinetwillen habe ich das alles hinter mir gelassen; es ist für mich nur noch Dreck, wenn ich bloß Christus habe. 9 Mit ihm möchte ich um jeden Preis verbunden sein. Deshalb versuche ich jetzt nicht mehr, durch meine eigene Leistung und durch das genaue Befolgen des Gesetzes vor Gott zu bestehen. Was zählt, ist, dass ich durch den Glauben an Christus von Gott angenommen werde. Darauf will ich vertrauen. 10 Um Christus allein geht es mir. Ihn will ich immer besser kennen lernen: Ich will die Kraft seiner Auferstehung erfahren, aber auch seine Leiden möchte ich mit ihm teilen und mein Leben ganz für Gott aufgeben, so wie es Jesus am Kreuz getan hat[a]. 11 Dann werde ich auch mit allen, die an Christus glauben, von den Toten auferstehen.
Unterwegs zum Ziel
12 Dabei ist mir klar, dass ich dies alles noch lange nicht erreicht habe und ich noch nicht am Ziel bin. Doch ich setze alles daran, es zu ergreifen, weil ich von Jesus Christus ergriffen bin. 13 Wie gesagt, meine lieben Brüder und Schwestern, ich weiß genau: Noch bin ich nicht am Ziel angekommen. Aber eins steht fest: Ich will vergessen, was hinter mir liegt, und schaue nur noch auf das Ziel vor mir. 14 Mit aller Kraft laufe ich darauf zu, um den Siegespreis zu gewinnen, das Leben in Gottes Herrlichkeit. Denn dazu hat uns Gott durch Jesus Christus berufen.
15 Wir alle, die wir auf dem Weg zum Ziel sind[b], wollen uns so verhalten. Wenn ihr in dem einen oder anderen Punkt nicht meiner Meinung seid, wird Gott euch noch Klarheit und Einsicht schenken. 16 Doch an dem, was ihr schon erreicht habt, wollen wir auf jeden Fall festhalten. Bleibt nicht auf halbem Wege stehen!
17 Liebe Brüder und Schwestern, nehmt euch ein Beispiel an mir und an den Menschen, die so leben wie meine Mitarbeiter und ich. 18 Es gibt viele andere, die sich Christen nennen, aber durch ihr Leben erkennen lassen, dass sie Feinde des Kreuzes von Jesus Christus sind. Ich habe es euch schon oft gesagt, aber jetzt beschwöre ich euch sogar unter Tränen: Hütet euch vor ihnen!
19 Ihr Weg führt unausweichlich ins Verderben. Im Grunde leben sie nur für ihre Triebe und Begierden,[c] und statt sich dafür zu schämen, sind sie auch noch stolz darauf. Sie denken an nichts anderes als an das Leben auf dieser Erde. 20 Wir dagegen haben unsere Heimat im Himmel. Von dort erwarten wir auch Jesus Christus, unseren Herrn und Retter. 21 Dann wird er unseren hinfälligen, sterblichen Leib verwandeln und ihn dem herrlichen, unvergänglichen Leib gleich werden lassen, den er selbst nach seiner Auferstehung empfangen hat. Denn Christus hat die Macht, alles seiner Herrschaft zu unterwerfen.

3 Por lo demás, hermanos, gozaos en el Señor. Para mí no es molestia el escribiros las mismas cosas, y para vosotros es útil.
2 Guardaos de los perros, guardaos de los malos obreros, guardaos de los que mutilan el cuerpo. 3 Nosotros somos la circuncisión, los que en espíritu servimos a Dios y nos gloriamos en Cristo Jesús, no teniendo confianza en la carne, 4 aunque yo tengo también de qué confiar en la carne. Si alguno piensa que tiene de qué confiar en la carne, yo más: 5 circuncidado al octavo día, del linaje de Israel, de la tribu de Benjamín, hebreo de hebreos; en cuanto a la Ley, fariseo; 6 en cuanto a celo, perseguidor de la iglesia; en cuanto a la justicia que se basa en la Ley, irreprochable.
7 Pero cuantas cosas eran para mí ganancia, las he estimado como pérdida por amor de Cristo. 8 Y ciertamente, aun estimo todas las cosas como pérdida por la excelencia del conocimiento de Cristo Jesús, mi Señor. Por amor a él lo he perdido todo y lo tengo por basura, para ganar a Cristo 9 y ser hallado en él, no teniendo mi propia justicia, que se basa en la Ley, sino la que se adquiere por la fe en Cristo, la justicia que procede de Dios y se basa en la fe. 10 Quiero conocerlo a él y el poder de su resurrección, y participar de sus padecimientos hasta llegar a ser semejante a él en su muerte, 11 si es que en alguna manera logro llegar a la resurrección de entre los muertos.
12 No que lo haya alcanzado ya, ni que ya sea perfecto; sino que prosigo, por ver si logro asir aquello para lo cual fui también asido por Cristo Jesús. 13 Hermanos, yo mismo no pretendo haberlo ya alcanzado; pero una cosa hago: olvidando ciertamente lo que queda atrás y extendiéndome a lo que está delante, 14 prosigo a la meta, al premio del supremo llamamiento de Dios en Cristo Jesús.
15 Así que, todos los que somos perfectos, esto mismo sintamos; y si otra cosa sentís, esto también os lo revelará Dios. 16 Pero en aquello a que hemos llegado, sigamos una misma regla, sintamos una misma cosa.
17 Hermanos, sed imitadores de mí y mirad a los que así se conducen según el ejemplo que tenéis en nosotros, 18 porque por ahí andan muchos, de los cuales os dije muchas veces, y aun ahora lo digo llorando, que son enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. 19 El fin de ellos será la perdición. Su dios es el vientre, su gloria es aquello que debería avergonzarlos, y sólo piensan en lo terrenal. 20 Pero nuestra ciudadanía está en los cielos, de donde también esperamos al Salvador, al Señor Jesucristo. 21 Él transformará nuestro cuerpo mortal en un cuerpo glorioso semejante al suyo, por el poder con el cual puede también sujetar a sí mismo todas las cosas.
