Signs of Christ’s Return
24 (A)Jesus (B)left the temple area and was going on His way [a]when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. 2 But He responded and said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, (C)not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”
3 And as He was sitting on (D)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of (E)Your coming, and of the [b]end of the age?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “(F)See to it that no one [c]misleads you. 5 For (G)many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the [d]Christ,’ and they will [e]mislead many people. 6 And you will be hearing of (H)wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. 7 For (I)nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be (J)famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 (K)But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.
9 “(L)Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and (M)you will be hated by all nations because of My name. 10 And at that time many will [f](N)fall away, and they will [g]betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many (O)false prophets will rise up and [h]mislead many people. 12 And because lawlessness is increased, [i]most people’s love will become cold. 13 (P)But the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved. 14 This (Q)gospel of the kingdom (R)shall be preached in the whole [j](S)world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Perilous Times
15 “Therefore when you see the (T)abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in (U)the holy place—[k](V)let the [l]reader understand— 16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 [m]Whoever is on (W)the [n]housetop must not go down to get things out of his house. 18 And [o]whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 But (X)woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 Moreover, pray that [p]when you flee, it will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be a (Y)great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will again. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no [q]life would have been saved; but for (Z)the sake of the [r]elect those days will be cut short. 23 (AA)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the [s]Christ,’ or ‘He is over here,’ do not believe him. 24 For false christs and (AB)false prophets will arise and will provide great [t](AC)signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even (AD)the [u]elect. 25 Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. 27 (AE)For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will the (AF)coming of the (AG)Son of Man [v]be. 28 (AH)Wherever the corpse is, there the [w]vultures will gather.
The Glorious Return
29 “But immediately after the (AI)tribulation of those days (AJ)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and (AK)the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then (AL)the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see (AM)the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And (AN)He will send forth His angels with (AO)a great trumpet blast, and they will gather together His [x](AP)elect from (AQ)the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
Parable of the Fig Tree
32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so you too, when you see all these things, [y]recognize that [z]He is near, right (AR)at the [aa]door. 34 Truly I say to you, (AS)this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 (AT)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
36 “But (AU)about that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37 For [ab]the (AV)coming of the Son of Man will be (AW)just like the days of Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (AX)marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that (AY)Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not [ac]understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the (AZ)coming of the Son of Man be. 40 At that time there will be two men in the field; one [ad]will be taken and one [ae]will be left. 41 (BA)Two women will be grinding at the [af](BB)mill; one [ag]will be taken and one [ah]will be left.
Be Ready for His Coming
42 “Therefore (BC)be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 But [ai]be sure of this, that (BD)if the head of the house had known (BE)at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44 For this reason (BF)you must be ready as well; for (BG)the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.
45 “(BH)Who then is the (BI)faithful and (BJ)sensible slave whom his [aj]master (BK)put in charge of his household slaves, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his [ak]master finds so doing when he comes. 47 Truly I say to you that (BL)he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My [al]master [am]is not coming for a long time,’ 49 and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and he eats and drinks with those habitually drunk; 50 then the [an]master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect, and at an hour that he does not know, 51 and he will [ao]cut him in two and assign [ap]him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be (BM)weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Parable of Ten Virgins
25 “Then (BN)the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their (BO)lamps and went out to meet the groom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were (BP)prudent. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take extra oil with them; 4 but the (BQ)prudent ones took oil in flasks with their lamps. 5 Now while the groom was delaying, they all became drowsy and began to sleep. 6 But at midnight [aq]there finally was a shout: ‘Behold, the groom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. 8 But the foolish virgins said to the prudent ones, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 However, the (BR)prudent ones answered, ‘No, there most certainly would not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 But while they were [ar]on their way to buy the oil, the groom came, and those who were (BS)ready went in with him to (BT)the wedding feast; and (BU)the door was shut. 11 Yet later, the other virgins also came, saying, ‘(BV)Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 (BW)Be on the alert then, because you do not know the day nor the hour.
Parable of the Talents
14 “(BX)For it is just like a man (BY)about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five [as](BZ)talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he (CA)went on his journey. 16 The one who had received the five (CB)talents immediately went and did business with them, and earned five more talents. 17 In the same way the one who had received the two talents earned two more. 18 But he who received the one talent went away and dug a hole in the ground, and hid his [at]master’s money.
19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *(CC)settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five (CD)talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have earned five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (CE)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will (CF)put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your [au]master.’
22 “Also the one who had received the two (CG)talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have earned two more talents.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (CH)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your master.’
24 “Now the one who had received the one (CI)talent also came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed. 25 And I was afraid, so I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you still have what is yours.’
26 “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You [av]worthless, lazy slave! Did you know that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter seed? 27 Then you ought to have [aw]put my money in the bank, and [ax]on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. 28 Therefore: take the talent away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’
29 “(CJ)For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 And throw the worthless slave into (CK)the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
The Judgment
31 “But when (CL)the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then (CM)He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 And all the nations will be (CN)gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, (CO)just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep (CP)on His right, but the goats (CQ)on the left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, (CR)inherit the kingdom prepared for you (CS)from the foundation of the world. 35 For (CT)I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; (CU)I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 (CV)naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you (CW)visited Me; (CX)I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You as a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And (CY)the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, (CZ)to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘(DA)Depart from Me, you accursed people, into the (DB)eternal fire which has been prepared for (DC)the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or as a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not [ay]take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for Me, either.’ 46 These will go away into (DD)eternal punishment, but the righteous into (DE)eternal life.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
26 (DF)When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, 2 “(DG)You know that after two days (DH)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be (DI)handed over for crucifixion.”
3 (DJ)At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in (DK)the courtyard of the high priest named (DL)Caiaphas; 4 and they (DM)plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, (DN)otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”
The Precious Ointment
6 (DO)Now when Jesus was in (DP)Bethany, at the home of Simon [az]the Leper, 7 (DQ)a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very expensive perfume, and she poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table. 8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this perfume could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering the woman? For she has done a good deed for Me. 11 For you always have (DR)the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it (DS)to prepare Me for burial. 13 Truly I say to you, (DT)wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Judas’ Bargain
14 (DU)Then one of the twelve, named (DV)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me [ba]to [bb](DW)betray Him to you?” And (DX)they set out for him thirty [bc]pieces of silver. 16 And from then on he looked for a good opportunity to [bd]betray [be]Jesus.
17 (DY)Now on the first day of [bf](DZ)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and [bg]asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to (EA)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “(EB)My time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
The Last Passover
20 (EC)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the [bh]twelve. 21 And as they were eating, He said, “(ED)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, “(EE)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is going away (EF)just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (EG)It would have been good [bi]for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And (EH)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, (EI)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, “(EJ)You have said it yourself.”
The Lord’s Supper Instituted
26 (EK)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and [bj](EL)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for (EM)this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for (EN)many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it with you, new, in My Father’s kingdom.”
30 (EO)And after singing a [bk]hymn, they went out to (EP)the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all [bl](EQ)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘(ER)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be (ES)scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, (ET)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter replied to Him, “Even if they all [bm]fall away because of You, I will never fall away!” 34 Jesus said to him, “(EU)Truly I say to you that (EV)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “(EW)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” All the disciples said the same thing as well.
The Garden of Gethsemane
36 (EX)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called [bn](EY)Gethsemane, and *told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took (EZ)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, “(FA)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (FB)keep watch with Me.”
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (FC)this cup pass from Me; (FD)yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (FE)keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 (FF)Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; (FG)the spirit is [bo]willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup (FH)cannot pass away unless I drink from it, (FI)Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “[bp]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (FJ)the hour [bq]is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”
Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
47 (FK)And while He was still speaking, behold, (FL)Judas, one of the twelve, came [br]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign previously, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him.” 49 And immediately Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, (FM)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 But Jesus said to him, “(FN)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.
51 And behold, (FO)one of those who were with Jesus [bs]reached and drew his (FP)sword, and struck the (FQ)slave of the high priest and [bt]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (FR)all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [bu](FS)legions of (FT)angels? 54 How then would (FU)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”
55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a man inciting a revolt? (FV)Every day I used to sit within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that (FW)the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.
Jesus before Caiaphas
57 (FX)Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to (FY)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But (FZ)Peter was following Him at a distance, as far as the (GA)courtyard of the high priest, and he came inside and sat down with the [bv](GB)officers to see the outcome.
59 Now the chief priests and the entire [bw](GC)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (GD)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(GE)I am able to destroy the [bx]temple of God and to rebuild it [by]in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 63 But (GF)Jesus kept silent. (GG)And the high priest said to Him, “I (GH)place You under oath by (GI)the living God, to tell us whether You are the [bz]Christ, (GJ)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, “(GK)You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see (GL)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (GM)coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 Then the high priest (GN)tore his [ca]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “(GO)He deserves death!”
67 (GP)Then they (GQ)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [cb]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(GR)Prophesy to us, You [cc]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”
Peter’s Denials
69 (GS)Now Peter was sitting outside in the (GT)courtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, (GU)since even the way you talk [cd]gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had [ce]made: “(GV)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Judas’ Remorse
27 (GW)Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; 2 and they bound Him and led Him away, and (GX)handed Him over to (GY)Pilate the governor.
3 Then when (GZ)Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned (HA)the thirty [cf]pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? (HB)You shall see to it yourself!” 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into (HC)the temple sanctuary and left; and (HD)he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them in the temple treasury, since it is money paid for blood.” 7 And they conferred together and [cg]with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. 8 (HE)For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “(HF)And [ch]they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the One whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10 (HG)and [ci]they gave them for the Potter’s Field, just as the Lord directed me.”
Jesus before Pilate
11 (HH)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “So You are the (HI)King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “(HJ)It is as you say.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, (HK)He did not offer any answer. 13 Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?” 14 And still (HL)He did not answer him in regard to even a single [cj]charge, so the governor was greatly amazed.
15 (HM)Now at the Passover Feast the governor was accustomed to release for the [ck]people any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus (HN)who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was because of envy that [cl]they had handed Him over.
19 And (HO)while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that (HP)righteous Man; for [cm]last night I suffered greatly (HQ)in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to (HR)ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death. 21 And the governor [cn]said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate *said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus (HS)who is called Christ?” They all *said, “[co]Crucify Him!” 23 But he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, “[cp]Crucify Him!”
24 Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that (HT)a riot was starting, he took water and (HU)washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (HV)this Man’s blood; (HW)you yourselves shall see.” 25 And all the people replied, “(HX)His blood shall be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas [cq]for them; but after having Jesus (HY)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
27 (HZ)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into (IA)the [cr]Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman [cs](IB)cohort to Him. 28 And they stripped Him and (IC)put a red [ct]cloak on Him. 29 (ID)And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a [cu]reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “(IE)Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And (IF)they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. 31 (IG)And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
32 (IH)As they were coming out, they found a man of (II)Cyrene named Simon, [cv]whom they compelled to carry His [cw]cross.
The Crucifixion
33 (IJ)And when they came to a place called (IK)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (IL)they gave Him (IM)wine mixed with [cx]bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.
35 And when they had crucified Him, (IN)they divided His garments among themselves by casting [cy]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (IO)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [cz]which read, “(IP)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38 At that time two [da]rebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were [db]speaking abusively to Him, (IQ)shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “(IR)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (IS)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “(IT)He saved others; [dc]He cannot save Himself! (IU)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (IV)He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [dd]takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (IW)And the [de]rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

Jesus Is Buried
57 (JO)Now when it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock; and he rolled (JP)a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And (JQ)Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 Now on the next day, that is, the day which is after (JR)the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and they said, “Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said, ‘(JS)After three days I am rising.’ 64 Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a (JT)guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the tomb secure with (JU)the guard, (JV)sealing (JW)the stone.
Jesus Is Risen!
28 (JX)Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, (JY)Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb. 2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for (JZ)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away (KA)the stone, and sat upon it. 3 And (KB)his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 The guards shook from fear of him and became like dead men. 5 And the angel said to the women, “[dn](KC)Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for He has risen, (KD)just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you (KE)to Galilee. There you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”
8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to report to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them [do]and said, “[dp]Rejoice!” And they came up and took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus *said to them, “[dq](KF)Do not be afraid; go, bring word to (KG)My brothers to leave (KH)for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
11 Now while they were on their way, some of (KI)the men from the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13 and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to (KJ)the governor’s ears, we will appease him and [dr]keep you out of trouble.” 15 And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely (KK)spread among the Jews and is (KL)to this day.
The Great Commission
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded (KM)to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated to them. 17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but (KN)some [ds]were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “(KO)All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 [dt](KP)Go, therefore, and (KQ)make disciples of (KR)all the nations, (KS)baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to [du]follow all that I commanded you; and behold, (KT)I am with you [dv]always, to (KU)the end of the age.”

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)
24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(B) every one will be thrown down.”
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(C) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(D) and of the end of the age?”(E)
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(F) 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(G) 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(H) There will be famines(I) and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(J) and put to death,(K) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(L) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(M) will appear and deceive many people.(N) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(O) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(P) will be preached in the whole world(Q) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(R) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[a](S) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(T) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(U) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(V)
22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(W) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(X) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(Y) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.
26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(Z) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(AA) of the Son of Man.(AB) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(AC)
29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. 32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[e] is near, right at the door.(AI) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(AJ) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AK)
The Day and Hour Unknown(AL)(AM)
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.(AN) 37 As it was in the days of Noah,(AO) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(AP) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(AQ) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(AR) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(AS)
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(AT) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(AU) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(AV) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(AW) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(AX) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(AY) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(AZ) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(BA)
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(BB) ten virgins who took their lamps(BC) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(BD) 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(BE) 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(BF)
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes(BS) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(BT) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(BU) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(BV) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(BW) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(BX) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(BY) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(BZ) I was sick and you looked after me,(CA) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(CB)
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(CC)
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(CD) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(CE) prepared for the devil and his angels.(CF) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(CG)
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(CH)”(CI)
The Plot Against Jesus(CJ)
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(CK) he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover(CL) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(CM) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(CN) 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(CO) 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(CP) among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany(CQ)(CR)
6 While Jesus was in Bethany(CS) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[h](CT) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(CU) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(CV)
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(CW)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(CX) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(CY)(CZ)(DA)
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(DB) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(DC)
18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(DD) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(DE)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(DF) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(DG) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(DH) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(DI)
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(DJ) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup,(DK) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[i] covenant,(DL) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(DM) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(DN) in my Father’s kingdom.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(DP)
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(DQ) for it is written:
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(DS)
33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(DT)
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(DU) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Gethsemane(DV)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(EB) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(EC) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(ED)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(EE) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(EF)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(EG) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(EH) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[k](EI)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(EJ) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(EK)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(EL) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(EM) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(EN) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(EO) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(EP) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(EQ)
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(ER) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(ES) He entered and sat down with the guards(ET) to see the outcome.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(EU) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(EV) came forward.
Finally two(EW) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(EX)
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(EY)
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(EZ) by the living God:(FA) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(FB) the Son of God.”(FC)
64 “You have said so,”(FD) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(FE) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[l](FF)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(FG) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,”(FH) they answered.
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(FI) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(FJ)
Peter Disowns Jesus(FK)
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(FL) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(FM) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(FN) to Pilate the governor.(FO)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(FP) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(FQ) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(FR)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(FS) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(FT)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(FU) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(FV) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[m](FW)
Jesus Before Pilate(FX)
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(FY)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(FZ) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(GA) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(GB) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(GC) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[n] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(GD) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(GE) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(GF) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(GG) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(GH)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(GI) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(GJ) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(GK) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(GL) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(GM)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(GN)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(GO) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(GP)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(GQ) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(GR) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(GS) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(GT) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(GU)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(GV)
32 As they were going out,(GW) they met a man from Cyrene,(GX) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(GY) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(GZ) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(HA) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(HB) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(HC) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(HD) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(HE) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(HF) save yourself!(HG) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(HH) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(HI) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(HJ) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(HK) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(HL)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(HM) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[o] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[p](HN)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(HO) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(HP)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(HQ) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(HR) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[q] went into the holy city(HS) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(HT) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(HU)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(HV) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[r] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(HW)
The Burial of Jesus(HX)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(HY) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(HZ) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(IA) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(IB) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(IC) on the stone(ID) and posting the guard.(IE)
Jesus Has Risen(IF)
28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene(IG) and the other Mary(IH) went to look at the tomb.
2 There was a violent earthquake,(II) for an angel(IJ) of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone(IK) and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.(IL) 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,(IM) for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.(IN) Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.(IO) There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them.(IP) “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers(IQ) to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
The Guards’ Report
11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards(IR) went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
