He replied, ‘Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

‘“These people honour me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.”[a]

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.’

And he continued, ‘You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[b] your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, “Honour your father and mother,”[c] and, “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”[d] 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God) – 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.’

But He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:

(A)This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
(B)And in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the (C)tradition of men.”

He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (D)tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘(E)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(F)The one who speaks evil of father or mother, is [a]certainly to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is (G)Corban (that is, [b]given to God),’ 12 you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thereby invalidating the word of God by your (H)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (A)hypocrites, as it is written,

(B)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (C)doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of (D)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, (E)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (F)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[a] 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus (G)making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

  1. Mark 7:11 Or an offering

He replied, “Isaiah was right. He prophesied about you people who pretend to be good. He said,

“ ‘These people honor me by what they say.
    But their hearts are far away from me.
Their worship doesn’t mean anything to me.
    They teach nothing but human rules.’ (Isaiah 29:13)

You have let go of God’s commands. And you are holding on to teachings that people have made up.”

Jesus continued speaking, “You have a fine way of setting aside God’s commands! You do this so you can follow your own teachings. 10 Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother.’ (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16) He also said, ‘Anyone who asks for bad things to happen to their father or mother must be put to death.’ (Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) 11 But you allow people to say that what might have been used to help their parents is Corban. Corban means A Gift Set Apart for God. 12 So you no longer let them do anything for their parents. 13 You make the word of God useless by putting your own teachings in its place. And you do many things like this.”
