John 1-6
New International Version

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(D) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) 4 In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) 7 He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S)— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

14 The Word became flesh(U) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(V) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(W) and truth.(X)

15 (John testified(Y) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Z) 16 Out of his fullness(AA) we have all received grace(AB) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(AC) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(AD) 18 No one has ever seen God,(AE) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](AF) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(BW) Jesus’ mother(BX) was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[l](BY) why do you involve me?”(BZ) Jesus replied. “My hour(CA) has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”(CB)

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(CC) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[m]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(CD) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(CE) through which he revealed his glory;(CF) and his disciples believed in him.(CG)

12 After this he went down to Capernaum(CH) with his mother(CI) and brothers(CJ) and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(CK)

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(CL) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(CM) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(CN) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(CO) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(CP) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[n](CQ)

18 The Jews(CR) then responded to him, “What sign(CS) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(CT)

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(CU)

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(CV) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(CW) Then they believed the scripture(CX) and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(CY) many people saw the signs(CZ) he was performing and believed(DA) in his name.[o] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(DB) for he knew what was in each person.(DC)

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(DD) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(DE) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(DF) we know(DG) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(DH) you are doing if God were not with him.”(DI)

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[p]”(DJ)

4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(DK) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[q] gives birth to spirit.(DL) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[r] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[s](DM)

9 “How can this be?”(DN) Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(DO) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(DP) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(DQ) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(DR) except the one who came from heaven(DS)—the Son of Man.[t](DT) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(DU) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[u](DV) 15 that everyone who believes(DW) may have eternal life in him.”[v](DX)

16 For God so loved(DY) the world that he gave(DZ) his one and only Son,(EA) that whoever believes(EB) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(EC) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(ED) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(EE) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(EF) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(EG) 19 This is the verdict: Light(EH) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(EI) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(EJ) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

John Testifies Again About Jesus

22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(EK) 23 Now John(EL) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(EM) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(EN) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(EO) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(EP) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(EQ) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(ER) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(ES) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[w]

31 The one who comes from above(ET) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(EU) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(EV) but no one accepts his testimony.(EW) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(EX) speaks the words of God, for God[x] gives the Spirit(EY) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(EZ) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(FA) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(FB)— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea(FC) and went back once more to Galilee.

4 Now he had to go through Samaria.(FD) 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(FE) 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(FF) 8 (His disciples had gone into the town(FG) to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(FH) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[y])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(FI)

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(FJ) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(FK) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(FL) welling up to eternal life.”(FM)

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(FN) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(FO) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(FP) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(FQ)

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(FR) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(FS) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(FT) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(FU) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(FV) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(FW) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(FX) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(FY) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(FZ)

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned(GA) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(GB) Could this be the Messiah?”(GC) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(GD) eat something.”

32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(GE) that you know nothing about.”

33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(GF) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(GG) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(GH) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(GI) a crop for eternal life,(GJ) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(GK) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Many Samaritans Believe

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(GL) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(GM) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.

42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(GN)

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43 After the two days(GO) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(GP) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(GQ) for they also had been there.

46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(GR) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(GS) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(GT) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(GU) believed.

54 This was the second sign(GV) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

The Healing at the Pool

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(GW) a pool, which in Aramaic(GX) is called Bethesda[z] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [aa] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(GY) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(GZ) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(HA) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(HB)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(HC) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(HD) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(HE) is always at his work(HF) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(HG) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(HH)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(HI) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(HJ) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(HK) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(HL) even so the Son gives life(HM) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(HN) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(HO)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(HP) has eternal life(HQ) and will not be judged(HR) but has crossed over from death to life.(HS) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(HT) when the dead will hear(HU) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(HV) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(HW) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(HX) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(HY) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(HZ) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(IA) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(IB)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(IC) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(ID) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(IE) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(IF) but I mention it that you may be saved.(IG) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(IH) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(II) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(IJ)—testify that the Father has sent me.(IK) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(IL) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(IM) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(IN) for you do not believe(IO) the one he sent.(IP) 39 You study[ab] the Scriptures(IQ) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(IR) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(IS) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(IT) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(IU) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[ac]?(IV)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(IW) on whom your hopes are set.(IX) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(IY) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(IZ)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(JA)

6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(JB) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(JC) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(JD) was near.

5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(JE) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[ad] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(JF) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(JG)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(JH) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(JI) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(JJ) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(JK) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(JL)

Jesus Walks on the Water(JM)

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[ae] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(JN) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(JO) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(JP) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(JQ) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(JR) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(JS) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(JT) when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(JU) not because you saw the signs(JV) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(JW) to eternal life,(JX) which the Son of Man(JY) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(JZ) of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(KA) in the one he has sent.”(KB)

30 So they asked him, “What sign(KC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(KD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(KE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[af]”(KF)

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(KG) and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(KH)

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(KI) the bread of life.(KJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(KK) in me will never be thirsty.(KL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(KM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

Miracle at Cana

First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

13 (CY)The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus (CZ)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (DA)And within the temple grounds He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a whip of [ar]cords, and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling (DB)the doves He said, “Take these things away from here; stop making (DC)My Father’s house a [as]place of business!” 17 His (DD)disciples remembered that it was written: “(DE)Zeal for Your house will consume me.” 18 (DF)The Jews then said to Him, “(DG)What sign do You show us [at]as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “(DH)Destroy this [au]temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 (DI)The Jews then said, “It took (DJ)forty-six years to build this [av]temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking about (DK)the [aw]temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His (DL)disciples (DM)remembered that He said this; and they believed (DN)the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

The New Birth

4 Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of (DZ)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter (EA)the kingdom of God. 6 (EB)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born [ba]again.’ 8 (EC)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “You are (ED)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, (EE)we speak of what we know and (EF)testify of what we have seen, and (EG)you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 (EH)No one has ascended into heaven, except (EI)He who descended from heaven: (EJ)the Son of Man. 14 And just as (EK)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must (EL)the Son of Man (EM)be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who [bb]believes will (EN)have eternal life in Him.

John the Baptist’s Last Testimony

22 After these things Jesus and His (FA)disciples came into the land of Judea; and there He was spending time with them and (FB)baptizing. 23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there; and people were coming and being baptized— 24 for (FC)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25 Then a matter of dispute developed on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about [bd](FD)purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “(FE)Rabbi, He who was with you (FF)beyond the Jordan, to whom you (FG)have testified—behold, He is baptizing and all the people are coming to Him.” 27 John replied, “(FH)A person can receive not even one thing unless it (FI)has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves [be]are my witnesses that I said, ‘(FJ)I am not the [bf]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is (FK)the groom; but the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly because of the groom’s voice. So this (FL)joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must [bg]increase, but I must [bh]decrease.

31 “(FM)He who comes from above is above all; (FN)the one who is only from the earth is of the earth and speaks of the earth. (FO)He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 What He has seen and heard, of this He (FP)testifies; and (FQ)no one accepts His testimony. 33 The one who has accepted His testimony (FR)has certified that God is true. 34 For He whom God (FS)sent speaks the words of God; (FT)for He does not give the Spirit [bi]sparingly. 35 (FU)The Father loves the Son and (FV)has entrusted all things to His hand. 36 The one who (FW)believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who (FX)does not [bj]obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

Jesus Goes to Galilee

4 So then, when (FY)the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that [bk]He was making and (FZ)baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although (GA)Jesus Himself was not baptizing; rather, His (GB)disciples were), 3 He left (GC)Judea and went away (GD)again to Galilee. 4 And He had to pass through (GE)Samaria. 5 So He *came to a city of (GF)Samaria called Sychar, near (GG)the parcel of land that (GH)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired from His journey, was just sitting by the well. It was about [bl]the sixth hour.

The Woman of Samaria

7 A woman of Samaria *came to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His (GI)disciples had gone away to (GJ)the city to buy food. 9 So the (GK)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (GL)Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (GM)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[bm]Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this (GN)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (GO)gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (GP)shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to (GQ)eternal life.”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[bn]Sir, (GR)give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[bo]Sir, I perceive that You are (GS)a prophet. 20 (GT)Our fathers worshiped on (GU)this mountain, and yet you Jews say that (GV)in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Believe Me, woman, that [bp](GW)a time is coming when you will worship the Father (GX)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 (GY)You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because (GZ)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But [bq](HA)a time is coming, and [br]even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (HB)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be [bs]His worshipers. 24 God is [bt]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (HC)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (HD)Messiah is coming ((HE)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “(HF)I am He, the One speaking to you.”

27 And at this point His (HG)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (HH)who told me all the things that I have done; (HI)this is not the [bu]Christ, is He?” 30 They left the city and were coming to Him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(HJ)Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (HK)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (HL)do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (HM)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields, that they are white (HN)for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving (HO)wages and is gathering (HP)fruit for (HQ)eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘(HR)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have [bv]come into their labor.”

The Samaritans

39 Now from (HS)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(HT)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to [bw]Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is (HU)the Savior of the world.”

43 And after (HV)the two days, He departed from there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that (HW)a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, only because (HX)they had seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing an Official’s Son

46 Therefore He came again to (HY)Cana of Galilee, (HZ)where He had made the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (IA)Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come (IB)from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and began asking Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see [bx](IC)signs and (ID)wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “[by]Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, “(IE)Go; your son [bz]is alive.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went home. 51 And as he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his [ca]son was [cb]alive. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the [cc]seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son is alive”; and he himself believed, and (IF)his entire household. 54 This is again a (IG)second [cd]sign that Jesus performed when He had (IH)come from Judea into Galilee.

The Healing at Bethesda

5 After these things there was (II)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Now in Jerusalem, by (IJ)the Sheep Gate, there is a pool which (IK)in [ce]Hebrew is called [cf]Bethesda, having five [cg]porticoes. 3 In these porticoes lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, limping, or [ch]paralyzed.[ci] 5 Now a man was there who had been [cj]ill for thirty-eight years. 6 Jesus, upon seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition for a long time, *said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus *said to him, “(IL)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.

(IM)Now it was a Sabbath on that day. 10 So (IN)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is a Sabbath, and (IO)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (IP)sin anymore, (IQ)so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and informed (IR)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason (IS)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father [ck]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Jesus’ Equality with God

18 For this reason therefore (IT)the Jews (IU)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (IV)making Himself equal with God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (IW)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [cl]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. 20 (IX)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (IY)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (IZ)gives them life, so (JA)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (JB)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (JC)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and (JD)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (JE)does not come into judgment, but has (JF)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, [cm](JG)a time is coming and [cn]even now has arrived, when (JH)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (JI)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He (JJ)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (JK)execute judgment, because He is [co]the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for [cp](JL)a time is coming when (JM)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: (JN)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

30 “(JO)I can do nothing [cq]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and (JP)My judgment is [cr]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but (JQ)the will of Him who sent Me.

31 “(JR)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [cs]true. 32 There is (JS)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (JT)has testified to the truth. 34 But (JU)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (JV)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (JW)were willing to rejoice for [ct]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (JX)the works which the Father has given Me (JY)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (JZ)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me, (KA)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (KB)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (KC)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

39 [cu](KD)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (KE)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (KF)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [cv]receive Me; (KG)if another comes in his own name, you will [cw]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [cx](KH)accept [cy]glory from one another and you do not seek (KI)the [cz]glory that is from (KJ)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (KK)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (KL)he wrote about Me. 47 But (KM)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Five Thousand Men Fed

6 After these things (KN)Jesus went away to the other side of (KO)the Sea of Galilee (or (KP)Tiberias). 2 A large crowd was following Him, because they were watching the [da](KQ)signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 But (KR)Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. 4 Now (KS)the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to (KT)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?” 6 But He was saying this only to (KU)test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do. 7 (KV)Philip answered Him, “(KW)Two hundred [db]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!” 8 One of His (KX)disciples, (KY)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two (KZ)fish; but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was (LA)plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about [dc](LB)five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (LC)after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the (LD)fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His (LE)disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve (LF)baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the [dd]sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the (LG)Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Water

15 So Jesus, aware that they [de]intended to come and take Him by force (LH)to make Him king, (LI)withdrew again to (LJ)the mountain by Himself, alone.

16 Now when evening came, His (LK)disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea (LL)to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 In addition, the sea began getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about [df]twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He *said to them, “It is I; [dg](LM)do not be afraid.” 21 So they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day (LN)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there except one, and that Jesus (LO)had not gotten into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had departed alone. 23 Other small boats came from (LP)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the (LQ)Lord (LR)had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and (LS)came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “(LT)Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Words to the People

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you (LU)seek Me, not because you saw [dh](LV)signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not (LW)work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for (LX)eternal life, which (LY)the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, (LZ)has set His [di]seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is (MA)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He (MB)has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “(MC)What then are You doing as a (MD)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work are You performing? 31 (ME)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘(MF)He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is [dj]that which (MG)comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always (MH)give us this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, “(MI)I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me (MJ)will never be thirsty. 36 But (MK)I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe. 37 (ML)Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. 38 For (MM)I have come down from heaven, (MN)not to do My own will, but (MO)the will of Him who (MP)sent Me. 39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of (MQ)everything that He has given Me I will (MR)lose nothing, but will (MS)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who (MT)sees the Son and (MU)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will (MV)raise him up on the last day.”

Words to the Jews

41 (MW)So then the Jews were complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that (MX)came down out of heaven.” 42 And they were saying, “(MY)Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (MZ)we know? How does He now say, ‘(NA)I have come down out of heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (NB)draws him; and I will (NC)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (ND)in the Prophets: ‘(NE)And they shall all be (NF)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 (NG)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes (NH)has eternal life. 48 (NI)I am the bread of life. 49 (NJ)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that (NK)comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and (NL)not die. 51 (NM)I am the living bread that (NN)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, (NO)he will live forever; and the bread which I will give (NP)for the life of the world also is (NQ)My flesh.”

52 (NR)Then the Jews (NS)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (NT)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (NU)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (NV)remains in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the (NW)living Father (NX)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that (NY)came down out of heaven, not as (NZ)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread (OA)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (OB)in the synagogue as He taught (OC)in Capernaum.

60 So then many of His (OD)disciples, when they heard this, said, “(OE)This statement is very [dk]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (OF)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this [dl](OG)offensive to you? 62 What then if you see (OH)the Son of Man (OI)ascending to where He was before? 63 (OJ)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; (OK)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. 64 But there are (OL)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (OM)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (ON)who it was who would [dm]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (OO)told you that no one can come to Me unless (OP)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

66 As a result of this many of His (OQ)disciples (OR)left, and would no longer walk with Him. 67 So Jesus said to (OS)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” 68 (OT)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (OU)words of eternal life. 69 And we have already believed and have come to know that You are (OV)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “(OW)Did I Myself not choose you, (OX)the twelve? And yet one of you is (OY)a devil.” 71 Now He meant Judas (OZ)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, (PA)one of (PB)the twelve, [dn]was going to betray Him.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

7 After these things Jesus (PC)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because (PD)the Jews (PE)were seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, (PF)the Feast of Booths, was near. 3 So His (PG)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your (PH)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret [do]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For not even His (PI)brothers believed in Him. 6 So Jesus *said to them, “(PJ)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. 7 (PK)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that (PL)its deeds are evil. 8 Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because (PM)My time has not yet fully arrived.” 9 Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10 But when His (PN)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. 11 (PO)So the Jews (PP)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: (PQ)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” 13 However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for (PR)fear of [dp]the Jews.

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to (PS)teach. 15 (PT)The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man (PU)become learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “(PV)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. 17 (PW)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself (PX)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 “(PY)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you (PZ)seeking to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “(QA)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (QB)one [dq]deed, and you all are astonished. 22 For this reason (QC)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from (QD)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 (QE)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath? 24 Do not (QF)judge by the outward appearance, but judge [dr]with righteous judgment.”

25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this man not the one whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (QG)The rulers do not really know that this is the [ds]Christ, do they? 27 However, (QH)we know where this man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (QI)teaching and saying, “(QJ)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (QK)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (QL)I do know Him, because (QM)I am from Him, and (QN)He sent Me.” 30 So they (QO)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (QP)hour had not yet come. 31 But (QQ)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(QR)When the [dt]Christ comes, He will not perform more [du](QS)signs than those which this man has done, will He?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (QT)officers to (QU)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “(QV)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (QW)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (QX)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (QY)The Jews then said to one another, “(QZ)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (RA)the Dispersion among (RB)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, ‘(RC)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on (RD)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “(RE)If anyone is thirsty, [dv]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (RF)as the Scripture said, ‘[dw]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (RG)living water.’” 39 But this He said (RH)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (RI)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (RJ)glorified.

People’s Division over Jesus

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (RK)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [dx]Christ.” But others were saying, “(RL)Surely the [dy]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (RM)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (RN)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (RO)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (RP)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (RQ)officers answered, “(RR)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(RS)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (RT)Not one of (RU)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (RV)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 “(RW)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(RX)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[dz]And everyone went to his home.

The Adulterous Woman

8 But Jesus went to (RY)the Mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and (RZ)He sat down and began teaching them. 3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the Law, (SA)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 Now they were saying this to (SB)test Him, (SC)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 When they persisted in asking Him, (SD)He straightened up and said to them, “(SE)He who is without sin among you, let him be the (SF)first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. 10 And (SG)straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, [ea]Lord.” And Jesus said, “(SH)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not (SI)sin any longer.”]]

Jesus Is the Light of the World

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “(SJ)I am the Light of the world; (SK)the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “(SL)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not [eb]true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “(SM)Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is [ec]true, because I know (SN)where I came from and where I am going; but (SO)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (SP)You judge [ed]according to the flesh; (SQ)I am not judging anyone. 16 But even (SR)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in (SS)your Law it has been written that the testimony of (ST)two people is [ee]true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and (SU)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; (SV)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke [ef]in (SW)the treasury, as (SX)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because (SY)His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and (SZ)you will look for Me, and (TA)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (TB)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘(TC)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “(TD)You are from below, I am from above; (TE)you are of this world, (TF)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (TG)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [eg](TH)I am, (TI)you will die in your sins.” 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “[eh]What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but (TJ)He who sent Me is true; and (TK)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (TL)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [ei](TM)I am, and (TN)I do nothing [ej]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (TO)He [ek]has not left Me alone, for (TP)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He said these things, (TQ)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “(TR)If you continue in My word, then you are truly My (TS)disciples; 32 and (TT)you will know the truth, and (TU)the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(TV)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, (TW)everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now (TX)the slave does not remain in the house forever; (TY)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (TZ)sets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know that you are (UA)Abraham’s descendants; yet (UB)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word [el]has no place in you. 38 I speak of the things which I have seen [em]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (UC)your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is (UD)our father.” Jesus *said to them, “(UE)If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, (UF)you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has (UG)told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of (UH)your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; (UI)we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, (UJ)you would love Me, (UK)for I came forth from God and am here; for I have (UL)not even come [en]on My own, but [eo](UM)He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand [ep](UN)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (UO)listen to My word. 44 (UP)You are of (UQ)your father the devil, and (UR)you want to do the desires of your father. (US)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (UT)there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells [eq]a lie, he (UU)speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of [er]lies. 45 But because (UV)I say the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (UW)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (UX)The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 (UY)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a (UZ)Samaritan, and You (VA)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (VB)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (VC)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (VD)follows My word, he will never (VE)see death.” 52 (VF)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (VG)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone (VH)follows My word, he will never (VI)taste of death.’ 53 You (VJ)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “(VK)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (VL)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (VM)you have not come to know Him, (VN)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (VO)a liar like you; (VP)but I do know Him, and I (VQ)follow His word. 56 (VR)Your father Abraham was (VS)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 (VT)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham [es]was born, [et](VU)I am.” 59 Therefore they (VV)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (VW)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

9 As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “(VX)Rabbi, who sinned, (VY)this man or his (VZ)parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was (WA)so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me (WB)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am (WC)the Light of the world.” 6 When He had said this, He (WD)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in (WE)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and (WF)washed, and (WG)came back seeing. 8 So the neighbors, and those who previously saw [eu]him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to (WH)sit and beg?” 9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” [ev]The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (WI)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”

Controversy over the Man

13 They *brought [ew]the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. 14 (WJ)Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (WK)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He (WL)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such [ex](WM)signs?” And (WN)there was dissension among them. 17 So they *said (WO)again to the man who was blind, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a (WP)prophet.”

18 (WQ)The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, 19 and they questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents then answered and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they (WR)were afraid of the [ey]Jews; for the Jews (WS)had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be [ez]Christ, (WT)he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue. 23 It was for this reason that his parents said, “(WU)He is of age; ask him.”

24 So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(WV)Give glory to God; we know that (WW)this man is a sinner.” 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “(WX)I told you already and you did not (WY)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?” 28 They spoke abusively to him and said, “You are His disciple, but (WZ)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (XA)we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes! 31 We know that (XB)God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is [fa]God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. 32 [fb]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 (XC)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “(XD)You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?” So they [fc](XE)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity

35 Jesus heard that they had [fd](XF)put him out, and upon finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (XG)Son of Man?” 36 He answered [fe]by saying, “And (XH)who is He, [ff]Sir, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and (XI)He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And he (XJ)worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, “(XK)For judgment I came into this world, so that (XL)those who do not see may see, and (XM)those who see may become blind.” 40 Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, “(XN)We are not blind too, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “(XO)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, ‘(XP)We see,’ your sin remains.

Parable of the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is (XQ)a thief and a robber. 2 But the one who enters by the door is (XR)a shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to (XS)his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and (XT)leads them out. 4 When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know (XU)his voice. 5 However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know (XV)the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus told them this (XW)figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them [fg]meant.

7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly I say to you, I am (XX)the door of the sheep. 8 All those who came before Me are (XY)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 (XZ)I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they (YA)would have life, and [fh]have it abundantly.

11 “(YB)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (YC)lays down His life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a (YD)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep. 14 (YE)I am the good shepherd, and (YF)I know My own, and My own know Me, 15 just as (YG)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (YH)I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And I have (YI)other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become (YJ)one flock, with (YK)one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I (YL)lay down My life so that I may take it back. 18 (YM)No one has taken it away from Me, but I (YN)lay it down on My own. 19 (YP)Dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He (YQ)has a demon and (YR)is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who is (YS)demon-possessed. (YT)A demon cannot open the eyes of those who are blind, can it?”

Jesus Asserts His Deity

22 At that time the [fi]Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of (YU)Solomon. 24 (YV)The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long [fj]will You keep us in suspense? If You are the [fk]Christ, tell us (YW)plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “(YX)I told you, and you do not believe; (YY)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because (YZ)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (ZA)listen to My voice, and (ZB)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them (ZC)eternal life, and they will never perish; and (ZD)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [fl]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (ZE)I and the Father are [fm]one.”

31 The Jews (ZF)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus replied to them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “We are not stoning You for a good work, but for (ZG)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (ZH)make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (ZI)your (ZJ)Law: ‘(ZK)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be nullified), 36 are you saying of Him whom the Father (ZL)sanctified and (ZM)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(ZN)I am the Son of God’? 37 (ZO)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe (ZP)the works, so that you may [fn]know and understand that (ZQ)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (ZR)they were seeking again to arrest Him, and (ZS)He eluded their grasp.

40 And He went away (ZT)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there. 41 Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no (ZU)sign, yet (ZV)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And (ZW)many believed in Him there.

The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of (ZX)Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister (ZY)Martha. 2 And it was the Mary who (ZZ)anointed (AAA)the Lord with [fo]ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “(AAB)Lord, behold, (AAC)he whom You love is sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not [fp]meant for death, but is for (AAD)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5 (Now Jesus loved (AAE)Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) 6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, “(AAF)Let’s go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples *said to Him, “(AAG)Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking (AAH)to stone You, and yet You are going there again?” 9 Jesus replied, “(AAI)Are there not twelve hours in the day? Philip and Nathanael

43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found (BC)Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now (BD)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found (BE)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom (BF)Moses in the law, and also the (BG)prophets, wrote—Jesus (BH)of Nazareth, the (BI)son of Joseph.”

48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, (BL)You are the Son of God! You are (BM)the King of Israel!”

50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (BN)hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Water Turned to Wine

2 On the third day there was a (BO)wedding in (BP)Cana of Galilee, and the (BQ)mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

4 Jesus said to her, (BR)“Woman, (BS)what does your concern have to do with Me? (BT)My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, (BU)according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted (BV)the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

11 This (BW)beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, (BX)and [p]manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to (BY)Capernaum, He, His mother, (BZ)His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(CA)

13 (CB)Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 (CC)And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers [q]doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make (CD)My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, (CE)“Zeal for Your house [r]has eaten Me up.”

18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, (CF)“What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”

19 Jesus answered and said to them, (CG)“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”

21 But He was speaking (CH)of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, (CI)His disciples remembered that He had said this [s]to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.

The Discerner of Hearts

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the (CJ)signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He (CK)knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for (CL)He knew what was in man.

The New Birth

3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 (CM)This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for (CN)no one can do these signs that You do unless (CO)God is with him.”

3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (CP)unless one is born [t]again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (CQ)unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is (CR)flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 (CS)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, (CT)“How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 (CU)Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and (CV)you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 (CW)No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man [u]who is in heaven. 14 (CX)And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so (CY)must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever (CZ)believes in Him should [v]not perish but (DA)have eternal life. 16 (DB)For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten (DC)Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 (DD)For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 (DE)“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, (DF)that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For (DG)everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been (DH)done in God.”

John the Baptist Exalts Christ

22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them (DI)and baptized. 23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near (DJ)Salim, because there was much water there. (DK)And they came and were baptized. 24 For (DL)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, (DM)to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all (DN)are coming to Him!”

27 John answered and said, (DO)“A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, (DP)‘I am not the Christ,’ but, (DQ)‘I have been sent before Him.’ 29 (DR)He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but (DS)the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 (DT)He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 (DU)He who comes from above (DV)is above all; (DW)he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. (DX)He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 And (DY)what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony (DZ)has certified that God is true. 34 (EA)For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit (EB)by measure. 35 (EC)The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. 36 (ED)He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the (EE)wrath of God abides on him.”

A Samaritan Woman Meets Her Messiah

4 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and (EF)baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria.

5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that (EG)Jacob (EH)gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For (EI)Jews have no dealings with (EJ)Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the (EK)gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (EL)living water.”

11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but (EM)whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him (EN)will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 (EO)The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, (EP)I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on (EQ)this mountain, and you Jews say that in (ER)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming (ES)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship (ET)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for (EU)salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will (EV)worship the Father in (EW)spirit (EX)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 (EY)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah (EZ)is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, (FA)He will tell us all things.”

26 Jesus said to her, (FB)“I who speak to you am He.”

The Whitened Harvest

27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man (FC)who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”

32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”

33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”

34 Jesus said to them, (FD)“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (FE)finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes (FF)the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, (FG)for they are already white for harvest! 36 (FH)And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that (FI)both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: (FJ)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; (FK)others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

The Savior of the World

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him (FL)because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own (FM)word.

42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for (FN)we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [w]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

Welcome at Galilee

43 Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. 44 For (FO)Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (FP)having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; (FQ)for they also had gone to the feast.

A Nobleman’s Son Healed

46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee (FR)where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain [x]nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, (FS)“Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”

49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”

50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”

52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.

54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda

5 After (FT)this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus (FU)went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem (FV)by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [y]Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [z]paralyzed, [aa]waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

8 Jesus said to him, (FW)“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

And (FX)that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; (FY)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”

12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was (FZ)healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. (GA)Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Honor the Father and the Son

16 For this reason the Jews (GB)persecuted Jesus, [ab]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, (GC)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

18 Therefore the Jews (GD)sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, (GE)making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (GF)the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For (GG)the Father loves the Son, and (GH)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, (GI)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but (GJ)has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (GK)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, (GL)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, (GM)but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when (GN)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For (GO)as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have (GP)life in Himself, 27 and (GQ)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, (GR)because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will (GS)hear His voice 29 (GT)and come forth—(GU)those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 (GV)I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because (GW)I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

The Fourfold Witness

31 (GX)“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not [ac]true. 32 (GY)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, (GZ)and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and (HA)shining lamp, and (HB)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But (HC)I have a greater witness than John’s; for (HD)the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very (HE)works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, (HF)has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, (HG)nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 (HH)You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and (HI)these are they which testify of Me. 40 (HJ)But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

41 (HK)“I do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 (HL)How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek (HM)the honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; (HN)there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; (HO)for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you (HP)do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Feeding the Five Thousand(HQ)

6 After (HR)these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of (HS)Tiberias. 2 Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were (HT)diseased.[ad] 3 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

4 (HU)Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. 5 (HV)Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to (HW)Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” 6 But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

7 Philip answered Him, (HX)“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”

8 One of His disciples, (HY)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, (HZ)but what are they among so many?”

10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them [ae]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly (IA)the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea(IB)

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (IC)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

16 (ID)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [af]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (IE)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (IF)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

The Bread from Heaven

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [ag]that one [ah]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (IG)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (IH)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (II)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (IJ)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, (IK)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

30 Therefore they said to Him, (IL)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (IM)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (IN)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (IO)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 (IP)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

35 And Jesus said to them, (IQ)“I am the bread of life. (IR)He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never (IS)thirst. 36 (IT)But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet (IU)do not believe. 37 (IV)All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and (IW)the one who comes to Me I will [ai]by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, (IX)not to do My own will, (IY)but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, (IZ)that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, (JA)that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Rejected by His Own

41 The Jews then [aj]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, (JB)“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [ak]“Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 (JC)No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (JD)draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, (JE)‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ (JF)Therefore everyone who [al]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (JG)Not that anyone has seen the Father, (JH)except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, (JI)he who believes [am]in Me has everlasting life. 48 (JJ)I am the bread of life. 49 (JK)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 (JL)This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread (JM)which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and (JN)the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

52 The Jews therefore (JO)quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless (JP)you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 (JQ)Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is [an]food indeed, and My blood is [ao]drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (JR)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 (JS)This is the bread which came down from heaven—not (JT)as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Turn Away

60 (JU)Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [ap]hard saying; who can understand it?”

61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [aq]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [ar]offend you? 62 (JV)What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 (JW)It is the Spirit who gives life; the (JX)flesh profits nothing. The (JY)words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But (JZ)there are some of you who do not believe.” For (KA)Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore (KB)I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”

66 (KC)From that time many of His disciples went [as]back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (KD)the words of eternal life. 69 (KE)Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [at]Christ, the Son of the living God.”

70 Jesus answered them, (KF)“Did I not choose you, the twelve, (KG)and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of (KH)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would (KI)betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus’ Brothers Disbelieve

7 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, (KJ)because the [au]Jews sought to kill Him. 2 (KK)Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 (KL)His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For (KM)even His (KN)brothers did not believe in Him.

6 Then Jesus said to them, (KO)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 (KP)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me (KQ)because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not [av]yet going up to this feast, (KR)for My time has not yet fully come.” 9 When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

The Heavenly Scholar

10 But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then (KS)the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” 12 And (KT)there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. (KU)Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” 13 However, no one spoke openly of Him (KV)for fear of the Jews.

14 Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and (KW)taught. 15 (KX)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

16 [aw]Jesus answered them and said, (KY)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 (KZ)If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. 18 (LA)He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who (LB)seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and (LC)no unrighteousness is in Him. 19 (LD)Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? (LE)Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20 The people answered and said, (LF)“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 (LG)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, (LH)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because (LI)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 (LJ)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Could This Be the Christ?

25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to (LK)kill? 26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. (LL)Do the rulers know indeed that this is [ax]truly the Christ? 27 (LM)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, (LN)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and (LO)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me (LP)is true, (LQ)whom you do not know. 29 [ay]But (LR)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 Therefore (LS)they sought to take Him; but (LT)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And (LU)many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [az]to them, (LV)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (LW)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (LX)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (LY)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (LZ)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (MA)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (MB)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (MC)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (MD)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (ME)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [ba]believing in Him would receive; for the [bb]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (MF)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [bc]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (MG)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (MH)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (MI)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (MJ)where David was?” 43 So (MK)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (ML)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (MM)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (MN)(he who came to [bd]Jesus [be]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (MO)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (MP)no prophet [bf]has arisen out of Galilee.”

An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

Jesus the Light of the World

8 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 Now [bh]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and (MQ)taught them. 3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, [bi]this woman was caught in (MR)adultery, in the very act. 5 (MS)Now [bj]Moses, in the law, commanded us [bk]that such should be stoned. But what do You [bl]say?” 6 This they said, testing Him, that they (MT)might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, [bm]as though He did not hear.

7 So when they continued asking Him, He [bn]raised Himself up and said to them, (MU)“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Then those who heard it, (MV)being[bo] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up [bp]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers [bq]of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, Lord.”

And Jesus said to her, (MW)“Neither do I condemn you; go [br]and (MX)sin no more.”

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, (MY)“I am the light of the world. He who (MZ)follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus Defends His Self-Witness

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, (NA)“You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not [bs]true.”

14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but (NB)you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15 (NC)You judge according to the flesh; (ND)I judge no one. 16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for (NE)I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17 (NF)It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and (NG)the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

19 Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”

Jesus answered, (NH)“You know neither Me nor My Father. (NI)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

20 These words Jesus spoke in (NJ)the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and (NK)no one laid hands on Him, for (NL)His hour had not yet come.

Jesus Predicts His Departure

21 Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and (NM)you will seek Me, and (NN)will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”

22 So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

23 And He said to them, (NO)“You are from beneath; I am from above. (NP)You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 (NQ)Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; (NR)for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

25 Then they said to Him, “Who are You?”

And Jesus said to them, “Just what I (NS)have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but (NT)He who sent Me is true; and (NU)I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.”

27 They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.

28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you (NV)lift[bt] up the Son of Man, (NW)then you will know that I am He, and (NX)that I do nothing of Myself; but (NY)as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And (NZ)He who sent Me is with Me. (OA)The Father has not left Me alone, (OB)for I always do those things that please Him.” 30 As He spoke these words, (OC)many believed in Him.

The Truth Shall Make You Free

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you (OD)abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the (OE)truth, and (OF)the truth shall make you free.”

33 They answered Him, (OG)“We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (OH)whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And (OI)a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 (OJ)Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s

37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but (OK)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 (OL)I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have [bu]seen with your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, (OM)“Abraham is our father.”

Jesus said to them, (ON)“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 (OO)But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth (OP)which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.”

Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; (OQ)we have one Father—God.”

42 Jesus said to them, (OR)“If God were your Father, you would love Me, for (OS)I proceeded forth and came from God; (OT)nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 (OU)Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 (OV)You are of your father the devil, and the (OW)desires of your father you want to (OX)do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and (OY)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (OZ)He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I AM

48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and (PA)have a demon?”

49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and (PB)you dishonor Me. 50 And (PC)I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, (PD)if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (PE)have a demon! (PF)Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. (PG)Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, (PH)“If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. (PI)It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [bv]your God. 55 Yet (PJ)you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and (PK)keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham (PL)rejoiced to see My day, (PM)and he saw it and was glad.”

57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (PN)before Abraham was, (PO)I AM.”

59 Then (PP)they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, (PQ)going[bw] through the midst of them, and so passed by.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight

9 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, (PR)who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, (PS)but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 (PT)I[bx] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is (PU)day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, (PV)I am the light of the world.”

6 When He had said these things, (PW)He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash (PX)in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So (PY)he went and washed, and came back seeing.

8 Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was [by]blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”

9 Some said, “This is he.” Others said, [bz]“He is like him.”

He said, “I am he.”

10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered and said, (PZ)“A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [ca]the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”

12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”

He said, “I do not know.”

The Pharisees Excommunicate the Healed Man

13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not [cb]keep the Sabbath.”

Others said, (QA)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (QB)there was a division among them.

17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?”

He said, (QC)“He is a prophet.”

18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because (QD)they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he (QE)would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, (QF)“Give God the glory! (QG)We know that this Man is a sinner.”

25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

26 Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”

28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God (QH)spoke to (QI)Moses; as for this fellow, (QJ)we do not know where He is from.”

30 The man answered and said to them, (QK)“Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that (QL)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 (QM)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

34 They answered and said to him, (QN)“You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they [cc]cast him out.

True Vision and True Blindness

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had (QO)found him, He said to him, “Do you (QP)believe in (QQ)the Son of [cd]God?”

36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”

37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and (QR)it is He who is talking with you.”

38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he (QS)worshiped Him.

39 And Jesus said, (QT)“For judgment I have come into this world, (QU)that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”

40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, (QV)and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”

41 Jesus said to them, (QW)“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

Jesus the True Shepherd

10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by (QX)name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a (QY)stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

Jesus the Good Shepherd

7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came [ce]before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 (QZ)I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

11 (RA)“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a [cf]hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (RB)leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and (RC)I know My sheep, and (RD)am known by My own. 15 (RE)As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; (RF)and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And (RG)other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; (RH)and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

17 “Therefore My Father (RI)loves Me, (RJ)because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I (RK)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (RL)This command I have received from My Father.”

19 Therefore (RM)there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, (RN)“He has a demon and is [cg]mad. Why do you listen to Him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. (RO)Can a demon (RP)open the eyes of the blind?”

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (RQ)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [ch]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (RR)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (RS)bear witness of Me. 26 But (RT)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [ci]as I said to you. 27 (RU)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (RV)My Father, (RW)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (RX)I and My Father are one.”

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Then (RY)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (RZ)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (SA)make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (SB)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (SC)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (SD)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (SE)whom the Father sanctified and (SF)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (SG)because I said, ‘I am (SH)the Son of God’? 37 (SI)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (SJ)believe the works, that you may know and [cj]believe (SK)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (SL)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The Believers Beyond Jordan

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (SM)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (SN)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of (SO)Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (SP)It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

4 When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when He heard that he was sick, (SQ)He stayed two more days in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”

8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to (SR)stone You, and are You going there again?”

9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? (SS)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the (ST)light of this world. 10 But (SU)if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus (SV)sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

12 Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”

16 Then (SW)Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [ck]two miles away. 19 And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that (SX)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha said to Him, (SY)“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25 Jesus said to her, “I am (SZ)the resurrection and the life. (TA)He who believes in Me, though he may (TB)die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, (TC)I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy

28 And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but [cl]was in the place where Martha met Him. 31 (TD)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, [cm]saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she (TE)fell down at His feet, saying to Him, (TF)“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”

They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35 (TG)Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

37 And some of them said, “Could not this Man, (TH)who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”

Lazarus Raised from the Dead

38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a (TI)stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would (TJ)see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone [cn]from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but (TK)because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with (TL)graveclothes, and (TM)his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus(TN)

45 Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, (TO)and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and (TP)told them the things Jesus did. 47 (TQ)Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, (TR)“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. 48 If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”

49 And one of them, (TS)Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 (TT)nor do you consider that it is expedient for [co]us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (TU)not for that nation only, but (TV)also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

53 Then, from that day on, they plotted to (TW)put Him to death. 54 (TX)Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called (TY)Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.

55 (TZ)And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to (UA)purify themselves. 56 (UB)Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?” 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might (UC)seize Him.

The Anointing at Bethany(UD)

12 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, (UE)where Lazarus was [cp]who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 (UF)There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then (UG)Mary took a pound of very costly oil of (UH)spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

4 But one of His disciples, (UI)Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for [cq]three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (UJ)had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; [cr]she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 For (UK)the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, (UL)whom He had raised from the dead. 10 (UM)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 (UN)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry(UO)

12 (UP)The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:

“Hosanna!
(UQ)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”

14 (UR)Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

15 “Fear(US) not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

16 (UT)His disciples did not understand these things at first; (UU)but when Jesus was glorified, (UV)then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.

17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 (UW)For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, (UX)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

The Fruitful Grain of Wheat

20 Now there (UY)were certain Greeks among those (UZ)who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, (VA)who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 But Jesus answered them, saying, (VB)“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (VC)unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [cs]grain. 25 (VD)He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (VE)follow Me; and (VF)where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross

27 (VG)“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? (VH)But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”

(VI)Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

30 Jesus answered and said, (VJ)“This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now (VK)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, (VL)if I am [ct]lifted up from the earth, will draw (VM)all peoples to Myself.” 33 (VN)This He said, signifying by what death He would die.

34 The people answered Him, (VO)“We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (VP)the light is with you. (VQ)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (VR)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (VS)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (VT)was hidden from them.

Who Has Believed Our Report?

37 But although He had done so many (VU)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:

(VV)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

40 “He(VW) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(VX)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”

41 (VY)These things Isaiah said [cu]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Walk in the Light

42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (VZ)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (WA)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Then Jesus cried out and said, (WB)“He who believes in Me, (WC)believes not in Me (WD)but in Him who sent Me. 45 And (WE)he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (WF)I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not [cv]believe, (WG)I do not judge him; for (WH)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (WI)He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—(WJ)the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For (WK)I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, (WL)what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I (WM)speak.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

13 Now (WN)before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (WO)His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He (WP)loved them to the end.

2 And [cw]supper being ended, (WQ)the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing (WR)that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He (WS)had come from God and (WT)was going to God, 4 (WU)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, (WV)“Lord, are You washing my feet?”

7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you (WW)do not understand now, (WX)but you will know after this.”

8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, (WY)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (WZ)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For (XA)He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [cx]know what I have done to you? 13 (XB)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 (XC)If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (XD)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For (XE)I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 (XF)Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 (XG)If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Jesus Identifies His Betrayer(XH)

18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the (XI)Scripture may be fulfilled, (XJ)‘He who eats [cy]bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 (XK)Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20 (XL)Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

21 (XM)When Jesus had said these things, (XN)He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (XO)one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

23 Now (XP)there was [cz]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 Then, leaning [da]back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to (XQ)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 (XR)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because (XS)Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, (XT)“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and (XU)God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and (XV)glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a (XW)little while longer. You will seek Me; (XX)and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 (XY)A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (XZ)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”

Jesus answered him, “Where I (YA)am going you cannot follow Me now, but (YB)you shall follow Me afterward.”

37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will (YC)lay down my life for Your sake.”

38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not (YD)crow till you have denied Me three times.

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let (YE)not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [db]mansions; if it were not so, [dc]I would have told you. (YF)I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, (YG)I will come again and receive you to Myself; that (YH)where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

5 (YI)Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said to him, “I am (YJ)the way, (YK)the truth, and (YL)the life. (YM)No one comes to the Father (YN)except through Me.

The Father Revealed

7 (YO)“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? (YP)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (YQ)I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you (YR)I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, (YS)or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

12 (YT)“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 (YU)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be (YV)glorified in the Son. 14 If you [dd]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 (YW)“If you love Me, [de]keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and (YX)He will give you another [df]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 (YY)the Spirit of truth, (YZ)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you (ZA)and will be in you. 18 (ZB)I will not leave you orphans; (ZC)I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but (ZD)you will see Me. (ZE)Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that (ZF)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 (ZG)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [dg]manifest Myself to him.”

22 (ZH)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, (ZI)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and (ZJ)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But (ZK)the [dh]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will (ZL)send in My name, (ZM)He will teach you all things, and bring to your (ZN)remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 (ZO)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me (ZP)say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because [di]I said, (ZQ)‘I am going to the Father,’ for (ZR)My Father is greater than I.

29 “And (ZS)now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, (ZT)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has (ZU)nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and (ZV)as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 (ZW)Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [dj]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear (ZX)more fruit. 3 (ZY)You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 (ZZ)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much (AAA)fruit; for without Me you can do (AAB)nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, (AAC)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words (AAD)abide in you, (AAE)you[dk] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 (AAF)By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; (AAG)so you will be My disciples.

Love and Joy Perfected

9 “As the Father (AAH)loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 (AAI)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and (AAJ)that your joy may be full. 12 (AAK)This is My (AAL)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (AAM)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (AAN)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (AAO)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (AAP)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (AAQ)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (AAR)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 (AAS)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (AAT)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (AAU)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (AAV)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (AAW)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (AAX)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (AAY)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (AAZ)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (ABA)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (ABB)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (ABC)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (ABD)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (ABE)“But when the [dl]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (ABF)He will testify of Me. 27 And (ABG)you also will bear witness, because (ABH)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (ABI)should not be made to stumble. 2 (ABJ)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (ABK)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And (ABL)these things they will do [dm]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when [dn]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

5 “But now I (ABM)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, (ABN)sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (ABO)if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has (ABP)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 (ABQ)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (ABR)of righteousness, (ABS)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (ABT)of judgment, because (ABU)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (ABV)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (ABW)the Spirit of truth, has come, (ABX)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (ABY)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (ABZ)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [do]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (ACA)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (ACB)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [dp]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (ACC)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (ACD)joy. 21 (ACE)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (ACF)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (ACG)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (ACH)that your joy may be (ACI)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (ACJ)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (ACK)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (ACL)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (ACM)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (ACN)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (ACO)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (ACP)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (ACQ)each to his [dq]own, and will leave Me alone. And (ACR)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (ACS)in Me you may have peace. (ACT)In the world you [dr]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (ACU)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (ACV)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 (ACW)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [ds]should give eternal life to as many (ACX)as You have given Him. 3 And (ACY)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (ACZ)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (ADA)whom You have sent. 4 (ADB)I have glorified You on the earth. (ADC)I have finished the work (ADD)which You have given Me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together [dt]with Yourself, with the glory (ADE)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

6 (ADF)“I have [du]manifested Your name to the men (ADG)whom You have given Me out of the world. (ADH)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 For I have given to them the words (ADI)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (ADJ)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (ADK)You sent Me.

9 “I pray for them. (ADL)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (ADM)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (ADN)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Jesus Prays for All Believers

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AEN)

Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who (AEU)betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (AEV)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (AEW)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (AEX)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (AEY)they led Him away to (AEZ)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (AFA)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (AFB)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [ed]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(AFC)

15 (AFD)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (AFE)another[ee] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (AFF)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (AFG)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (AFH)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (AFI)in synagogues and (AFJ)in the temple, where [ef]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (AFK)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (AFL)struck[eg] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (AFM)Then Annas sent Him bound to (AFN)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (AFO)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (AFP)immediately a rooster crowed.

In Pilate’s Court(AFQ)

28 (AFR)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (AFS)But they themselves did not go into the [eh]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (AFT)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [ei]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”

Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (AFU)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (AFV)signifying by what death He would die.

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (AGD)“I find no fault in Him at all.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(AGE)

39 (AGF)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 (AGG)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (AGH)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AGI)

19 So then (AGJ)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [ek]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (AGK)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate’s Decision

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (AGP)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [em]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (AGQ)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (AGR)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (AGS)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (AGT)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (AGU)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (AGV)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (AGW)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [en]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(AGX)

17 (AGY)And He, bearing His cross, (AGZ)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (AHA)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (AHB)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (AHC)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (AHE)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (AHF)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (AHG)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (AHH)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (AHI)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [eo]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (AHJ)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (AHK)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AHL)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (AHM)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (AHN)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (AHO)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AHP)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (AHQ)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (AHR)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (AHS)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (AHT)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AHU)

38 (AHV)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AHW)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AHX)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AHY)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AHZ)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AIA)there they laid Jesus, (AIB)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(AIC)

3 (AIH)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (AII)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and (AIJ)the [ep]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the (AIK)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not [eq]know the (AIL)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (AIM)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (AIN)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (AIO)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

She turned and said to [er]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (AJD)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (AJE)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (AJF)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [eu]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (AJG)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (AJH)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (AJI)but these are written that (AJJ)you may believe that Jesus (AJK)is the Christ, the Son of God, (AJL)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (AJM)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, (AJN)Thomas called the Twin, (AJO)Nathanael of (AJP)Cana in Galilee, (AJQ)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [ev]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (AJR)did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then (AJS)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

6 And He said to them, (AJT)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

7 Therefore (AJU)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (AJV)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (AJW)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [ew]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [ex]love You.”

He said to him, (AJX)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [ey]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [ez]love You.”

(AJY)He said to him, “Tend My (AJZ)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [fa]Jonah, do you [fb]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (AKA)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (AKB)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (AKC)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (AKD)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (AKE)whom Jesus loved following, (AKF)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [fc]will that he remain (AKG)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (AKH)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (AKI)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (AKJ)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
