15 This is what the Lord says:
(A)A voice is heard in (B)Ramah,
Lamenting and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She (C)refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because (D)they are no more.”

16 This is what the Lord says:

(E)Restrain your voice from weeping
And your eyes from tears;
For your (F)work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord,
“And they will (G)return from the land of the enemy.
17 There is (H)hope for your future,” declares the Lord,
“And your children will return to their own territory.
18 I have certainly heard Ephraim (I)grieving,
‘You have (J)disciplined me, and I was corrected,
Like an untrained (K)calf;
(L)Bring me back that I may be restored,
For You are the Lord my God.
19 For after I turned back, I (M)repented;
And after I was instructed, I [a](N)slapped my thigh;
I was (O)ashamed and also humiliated
Because I bore the shame of my youth.’
20 Is (P)Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a delightful child?
Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him,
I certainly still remember him;
Therefore My [b](Q)heart yearns for him;
I will certainly (R)have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.

21 “Set up roadmarks for yourself,
Place guideposts for yourself;
(S)Direct your [c]mind to the highway,
The way by which you went.
(T)Return, O virgin of Israel,
Return to these your cities.
22 How long will you waver,
You (U)rebellious daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
A woman will shelter a man.”

23 This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Once again they will speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities when I (V)restore their fortunes,

‘The Lord bless you, O (W)place of righteousness,
O (X)holy hill!’

24 Judah and all its cities will (Y)live together in it, the farmers and those who travel with flocks. 25 (Z)For I give plenty of water to the weary ones, and [d]refresh everyone who languishes.” 26 At this I (AA)awoke and looked, and my (AB)sleep had been pleasant to me.

A New Covenant

27 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will (AC)sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of mankind and the seed of animals. 28 And just as I have (AD)watched over them to (AE)uproot them, tear them down, ruin, destroy, and bring disaster on them, so I will watch over them to (AF)build and to plant them,” declares the Lord.

29 “In those days they will no longer say,
(AG)The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
[e]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt.’

30 But (AH)everyone will die for his own wrongdoing; each person who eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will become blunt.

31 (AI)Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a (AJ)new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the (AK)covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I (AL)took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My (AM)covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “For (AN)this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “(AO)I will put My law within them and write it on their heart; and (AP)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will (AQ)not teach again, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all (AR)know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will (AS)forgive their wrongdoing, and their (AT)sin I will no longer remember.”

35 This is what the Lord says,
He who (AU)gives the sun for light by day
And the [f]fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
Who (AV)stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
(AW)The Lord of armies is His name:
36 (AX)If [g]this fixed order departs
From Me,” declares the Lord,
“Then the descendants of Israel also will (AY)cease
To be a nation before Me [h]forever.”
37 This is what the Lord says:
(AZ)If the heavens above can be measured
And the foundations of the earth searched out below,
Then I will also (BA)reject all the descendants of Israel
For everything that they have done,” declares the Lord.

38 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the (BB)city will be rebuilt for the Lord from the (BC)Tower of Hananel to the (BD)Corner Gate. 39 The (BE)measuring line will go out farther straight ahead, to the hill Gareb; then it will turn to Goah. 40 And (BF)the entire valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook (BG)Kidron to the corner of the (BH)Horse Gate toward the east, shall be (BI)holy to the Lord; it will not be uprooted or overthrown ever again.”

23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[b](AA) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(AB) you, you prosperous city,(AC) you sacred mountain.’(AD) 24 People will live(AE) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(AF) 25 I will refresh the weary(AG) and satisfy the faint.”(AH)

26 At this I awoke(AI) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.

27 “The days are coming,”(AJ) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(AK) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(AL) over them to uproot(AM) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(AN) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(AO) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(AP) have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(AQ)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(AR) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(AS)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(AT)
    I made with their ancestors(AU)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,(AV)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(AW) to[c] them,[d]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(AX)
    and write it on their hearts.(AY)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(AZ)
34 No longer will they teach(BA) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(BB) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(BC) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins(BD) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(BE) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(BF)
who stirs up the sea(BG)
    so that its waves roar(BH)
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(BI)
36 “Only if these decrees(BJ) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(BK) ever cease

37 This is what the Lord says:

The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Prophecy against Elam

34 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning (A)Elam, (B)at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying:

35 “This is what the Lord of armies says:
‘Behold, I am going to (C)break the bow of Elam,
The [a]finest of their might.
36 I will bring upon Elam the (D)four winds
From the four ends of heaven,
And will (E)scatter them to all these winds;
And there will be no nation
To which the outcasts of Elam will not go.
37 So I will [b]shatter Elam before their enemies
And before those who seek their lives;
And I will (F)bring disaster upon them,
Even My (G)fierce anger,’ declares the Lord,
‘And I will (H)send the sword after them
Until I have consumed them.
38 Then I will set My throne in Elam,
And eliminate from there the king and officials,’
Declares the Lord.
39 ‘But it will come about in the last days
That I will (I)restore the fortunes of Elam,’”
Declares the Lord.

Prophecy against Babylon

50 The word which the Lord spoke concerning (J)Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet:

(K)Declare and proclaim among the nations.
Proclaim it and (L)lift up a flag,
Do not conceal it. Say,
(M)Babylon has been captured,
(N)Bel has been put to shame, [c]Marduk has been [d]shattered;
Her (O)idols have been put to shame, her images have been shattered.’

For a nation has come up against her from the (P)north; it will make her land (Q)an object of horror, and there will be (R)no inhabitant in it. Whether people or animals, they have wandered off, they have gone!

“In those days and at that time,” declares the Lord, “the sons of Israel will come, they and the sons of Judah (S)as well; they will go along (T)weeping as they go, and it will be (U)the Lord their God whom they will seek. They will (V)ask for the way to Zion, turning their faces [e]in its direction; [f]they [g]will come so that they may join themselves to the Lord in an (W)everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.

“My people have become (X)lost sheep;
(Y)Their shepherds have led them astray.
They have made them turn aside on the (Z)mountains.
They have gone from mountain to hill,
They have forgotten their (AA)resting place.
All who found them have devoured them;
And their adversaries have said, ‘(AB)We are not guilty,
Since they have sinned against the Lord who is the (AC)habitation of righteousness,
The Lord, the (AD)hope of their fathers.’

“Wander away from the (AE)midst of Babylon
And [h]go out from the land of the Chaldeans;
Be like male goats [i]at the head of the flock.
For behold, I am going to (AF)rouse and bring up against Babylon
A contingent of great nations from the land of the north,
And they will draw up their battle lines against her;
From there she will be taken captive.
Their arrows will be like [j]an expert warrior
Who does not return empty-handed.
10 [k](AG)Chaldea will become plunder;
All who plunder her will have enough,” declares the Lord.

11 “Because you are glad, because you are jubilant,
You who (AH)pillage My heritage,
Because you skip about [l]like a threshing (AI)heifer
And neigh like [m]stallions,
12 Your (AJ)mother [n]will be greatly ashamed,
She who gave you birth [o]will be humiliated.
Behold, she will be the least of the nations,
A (AK)wilderness, a dry land and a desert.
13 Because of the wrath of the Lord she will (AL)not be inhabited,
But she will be (AM)completely desolate;
Everyone who passes by Babylon (AN)will be horrified
And will hiss because of all her wounds.
14 Draw up your battle lines against Babylon on every side,
All of you who [p]bend the bow;
Shoot at her, do not spare your arrows,
For she has (AO)sinned against the Lord.
15 Raise your battle cry against her on every side!
She has (AP)given [q]herself up, her towers have fallen,
Her (AQ)walls have been torn down.
For this is the (AR)vengeance of the Lord:
Take vengeance on her;
(AS)As she has done to others, so do to her.
16 Eliminate the (AT)sower from Babylon
And the one who wields the sickle at the time of harvest;
From [r]the (AU)sword of the oppressor
(AV)Each of them will turn back to his own people
And each of them will flee to his own land.

17 “Israel is a (AW)scattered [s]flock, the (AX)lions have driven them away. The first one who devoured him was the (AY)king of Assyria, and this last one who has gnawed his bones is (AZ)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 18 Therefore this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I (BA)punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will (BB)bring Israel back to his pasture and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and his [t]desire will be satisfied in the (BC)hill country of Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days and at that time,’ declares the Lord, ‘search will be made for the wrongdoing of Israel, but (BD)there will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will forgive those (BE)whom I leave as a remnant.’

21 “Against the land of [u]Merathaim, go up against it,
And against the inhabitants of [v](BF)Pekod.
Kill and [w]completely destroy them,” declares the Lord,
“And do according to everything that I have commanded you.
22 The (BG)noise of battle is in the land,
And great destruction.
23 How the (BH)hammer of the whole earth
Has been cut off and broken!
How Babylon has become
An object of horror among the nations!
24 I (BI)set a trap for you and you were also (BJ)caught, Babylon,
While you yourself were not aware;
You have been found and also seized
Because you have engaged in (BK)conflict with the Lord.”
25 The Lord has opened His armory
And has brought out the (BL)weapons of His indignation,
For it is a (BM)work of the Lord [x]God of armies
In the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come to her from the [y]farthest border;
(BN)Open up her barns,
Pile her up like heaps of grain
And [z](BO)completely destroy her,
Let nothing be left to her.
27 (BP)Put all her bulls to the sword;
Let them (BQ)go down to the slaughter!
Woe be upon them, for their (BR)day has come,
The time of their punishment.

28 There is a (BS)sound of fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon,
To declare in Zion the (BT)vengeance of the Lord our God,
Vengeance for His (BU)temple.

29 “Summon [aa]many against Babylon,
All those who [ab]bend the bow:
Encamp against her on every side,
Let there be no escape[ac].
Repay her according to her work;
(BV)According to all that she has done, so do to her;
For she has become (BW)arrogant against the Lord,
Against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore her (BX)young men will fall in her streets,
And all her men of war will (BY)perish on that day,” declares the Lord.
31 “Behold, (BZ)I am against you, [ad]arrogant one,”
Declares the Lord [ae]God of armies,
“For your day has come,
The time [af]when I will punish you.
32 The [ag](CA)arrogant one will stumble and fall
With no one to raise him up;
And I will (CB)set fire to his cities,
And it will devour all his surroundings.”

33 This is what the Lord of armies says:
“The sons of Israel are oppressed,
And the sons of Judah as well;
And (CC)all who took them captive have held them firmly,
They have refused to let them go.
34 Their (CD)Redeemer is strong, (CE)the Lord of armies is His name;
He will vigorously (CF)plead their case
So that He may (CG)bring rest to their land,
But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A (CH)sword against the Chaldeans,” declares the Lord,
“And against the inhabitants of Babylon
And against her (CI)leaders and her (CJ)wise men!
36 A sword against the (CK)oracle priests, and they will become fools!
A sword against her (CL)warriors, and they will be [ah](CM)shattered!
37 A sword against [ai]their (CN)horses, against [aj]their chariots,
And against all the [ak](CO)foreigners who are in the midst of her,
And they will become (CP)women!
A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered!
38 A [al](CQ)drought on her waters, and they will be dried up!
For it is a land of (CR)idols,
And they go insane at frightful images.

39 “Therefore the (CS)desert creatures will live there with the jackals;
The ostriches also will live in it.
It will (CT)never again be inhabited
Nor lived in from generation to generation.
40 As when God overthrew (CU)Sodom
And Gomorrah with its neighbors,” declares the Lord,
“No one will live there,
Nor will [am]anyone of mankind reside in it.

41 “Behold, a people is coming (CV)from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Will be roused from the remote parts of the earth.
42 They (CW)seize their bow and javelin;
They are (CX)cruel and have no mercy.
Their (CY)voice roars like the sea;
And they ride on (CZ)horses,
(DA)Drawn up like a man for the battle
Against you, daughter of Babylon.
43 The (DB)king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands hang limp;
(DC)Distress has gripped him,
Agony like a woman in childbirth.

44 (DD)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase them away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is (DE)chosen. For who is (DF)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can (DG)stand against Me?” 45 Therefore hear the (DH)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Babylon, and His purposes which He has in mind against the land of the Chaldeans: (DI)they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture desolate because of them. 46 At the [an]shout, “Babylon has been conquered!” the (DJ)earth quakes, and an (DK)outcry is heard among the nations.

Babylon Judged for Sins against Israel

51 This is what the Lord says:

“Behold, I am going to stir up
[ao]The (DL)spirit of a destroyer against Babylon
And against the inhabitants of [ap]Leb-kamai.
I will send [aq]foreigners to Babylon so that they may (DM)winnow her
And devastate her land;
For they will be opposed to her on every side
On the day of her disaster.
Let not [ar]him who [as](DN)bends his bow [at]bend it,
Nor let him rise up in his (DO)coat of armor.
Do not spare her young men;
Devote all her army to destruction.
They will fall down [au]dead in the land of the Chaldeans,
And (DP)pierced through in their streets.”

For (DQ)neither Israel nor Judah has been [av]forsaken
By his God, the Lord of armies,
Although their land is (DR)full of guilt
[aw]Before the Holy One of Israel.
(DS)Flee from the midst of Babylon,
And each of you save his life!
Do not (DT)perish in her [ax]punishment,
For this is the (DU)Lords time of vengeance;
He is going to (DV)repay to her what she deserves.
Babylon has been a golden (DW)cup in the hand of the Lord,
Intoxicating all the earth.
The (DX)nations have drunk of her wine;
Therefore the nations are (DY)going insane.
Suddenly (DZ)Babylon has fallen and been broken;
(EA)Wail over her!
(EB)Bring [ay]balm for her pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.
We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
Abandon her and (EC)let’s each go to his own country,
For her judgment has (ED)reached to heaven
And it rises to the clouds.
10 The Lord has (EE)brought [az]about our vindication;
Come and let’s (EF)recount in Zion
The work of the Lord our God!

11 (EG)Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes,
Because His plan is against Babylon to destroy it;
For it is the (EH)vengeance of the Lord, vengeance for His temple.
12 (EI)Lift up a signal flag against the walls of Babylon;
Post a strong guard,
Station [ba]sentries,
Set up an ambush!
For the Lord has both (EJ)planned and performed
What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 You who (EK)live by many waters,
Abundant in (EL)treasures,
Your end has come,
The [bb]measure of your [bc](EM)end.
14 The (EN)Lord of armies has sworn by Himself:
“I will certainly fill you with a [bd]population like (EO)locusts,
And they will cry out with shouts of victory over you.”

A Message About Elam

34 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam,(A) early in the reign of Zedekiah(B) king of Judah:

35 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“See, I will break the bow(C) of Elam,
    the mainstay of their might.
36 I will bring against Elam the four winds(D)
    from the four quarters of heaven;(E)
I will scatter them to the four winds,
    and there will not be a nation
    where Elam’s exiles do not go.
37 I will shatter Elam before their foes,
    before those who want to kill them;
I will bring disaster on them,
    even my fierce anger,”(F)
declares the Lord.
“I will pursue them with the sword(G)
    until I have made an end of them.
38 I will set my throne in Elam
    and destroy her king and officials,”
declares the Lord.

39 “Yet I will restore(H) the fortunes of Elam
    in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

A Message About Babylon(I)

50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(J) and the land of the Babylonians[a]:

“Announce and proclaim(K) among the nations,
    lift up a banner(L) and proclaim it;
    keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(M)
    Bel(N) will be put to shame,(O)
    Marduk(P) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
    and her idols(Q) filled with terror.’
A nation from the north(R) will attack her
    and lay waste her land.
No one will live(S) in it;
    both people and animals(T) will flee away.

“In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(U)
    will go in tears(V) to seek(W) the Lord their God.
They will ask the way(X) to Zion
    and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(Y) and bind themselves to the Lord
    in an everlasting covenant(Z)
    that will not be forgotten.

“My people have been lost sheep;(AA)
    their shepherds(AB) have led them astray(AC)
    and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(AD)
    and forgot their own resting place.(AE)
Whoever found them devoured(AF) them;
    their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(AG)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
    the Lord, the hope(AH) of their ancestors.’

“Flee(AI) out of Babylon;(AJ)
    leave the land of the Babylonians,
    and be like the goats that lead the flock.
For I will stir(AK) up and bring against Babylon
    an alliance of great nations(AL) from the land of the north.(AM)
They will take up their positions against her,
    and from the north she will be captured.(AN)
Their arrows(AO) will be like skilled warriors
    who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[b] will be plundered;(AP)
    all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.

11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
    you who pillage my inheritance,(AQ)
because you frolic like a heifer(AR) threshing grain
    and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
    she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(AS)
She will be the least of the nations—
    a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(AT)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
    but will be completely desolate.(AU)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(AV)
    they will scoff(AW) because of all her wounds.(AX)

14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
    all you who draw the bow.(AY)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(AZ)
    for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(BA) against her on every side!
    She surrenders, her towers fall,
    her walls(BB) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(BC) of the Lord,
    take vengeance on her;
    do to her(BD) as she has done to others.(BE)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
    and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(BF) of the oppressor
    let everyone return to their own people,(BG)
    let everyone flee to their own land.(BH)

17 “Israel is a scattered flock(BI)
    that lions(BJ) have chased away.
The first to devour(BK) them
    was the king(BL) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(BM)
    was Nebuchadnezzar(BN) king(BO) of Babylon.”

18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
    as I punished the king(BP) of Assyria.(BQ)
19 But I will bring(BR) Israel back to their own pasture,
    and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(BS)
    on the hills(BT) of Ephraim and Gilead.(BU)
20 In those days, at that time,”
    declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
    but there will be none,(BV)
and for the sins(BW) of Judah,
    but none will be found,
    for I will forgive(BX) the remnant(BY) I spare.

21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
    and those who live in Pekod.(BZ)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[c] them,”
declares the Lord.
    “Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(CA) of battle is in the land,
    the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
    is the hammer(CB) of the whole earth!(CC)
How desolate(CD) is Babylon
    among the nations!
24 I set a trap(CE) for you, Babylon,
    and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(CF)
    because you opposed(CG) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
    and brought out the weapons(CH) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
    in the land of the Babylonians.(CI)
26 Come against her from afar.(CJ)
    Break open her granaries;
    pile her up like heaps of grain.(CK)
Completely destroy(CL) her
    and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(CM)
    let them go down to the slaughter!(CN)
Woe to them! For their day(CO) has come,
    the time(CP) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(CQ) and refugees from Babylon
    declaring in Zion(CR)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(CS)
    vengeance for his temple.(CT)

29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
    all those who draw the bow.(CU)
Encamp all around her;
    let no one escape.(CV)
Repay(CW) her for her deeds;(CX)
    do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(CY) the Lord,
    the Holy One(CZ) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(DA) will fall in the streets;
    all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(DB) you, you arrogant one,”
    declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(DC) has come,
    the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(DD) one will stumble and fall(DE)
    and no one will help her up;(DF)
I will kindle a fire(DG) in her towns
    that will consume all who are around her.”

33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“The people of Israel are oppressed,(DH)
    and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
    refusing to let them go.(DI)
34 Yet their Redeemer(DJ) is strong;
    the Lord Almighty(DK) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(DL)
    so that he may bring rest(DM) to their land,
    but unrest to those who live in Babylon.

35 “A sword(DN) against the Babylonians!”(DO)
    declares the Lord
“against those who live in Babylon
    and against her officials and wise(DP) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
    They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(DQ)
    They will be filled with terror.(DR)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(DS)
    and all the foreigners in her ranks!
    They will become weaklings.(DT)
A sword against her treasures!(DU)
    They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[d] her waters!(DV)
    They will dry(DW) up.
For it is a land of idols,(DX)
    idols that will go mad with terror.

39 “So desert creatures(DY) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.(DZ)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(EA)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.(EB)

41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(EC)
    a great nation and many kings
    are being stirred(ED) up from the ends of the earth.(EE)
42 They are armed with bows(EF) and spears;
    they are cruel(EG) and without mercy.(EH)
They sound like the roaring sea(EI)
    as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(EJ)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
    and his hands hang limp.(EK)
Anguish has gripped him,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(EL)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(EM)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen(EN) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(EO)
    And what shepherd can stand against me?”

45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
    what he has purposed(EP) against the land of the Babylonians:(EQ)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(ER)
    its cry(ES) will resound among the nations.

51 This is what the Lord says:

“See, I will stir(ET) up the spirit of a destroyer
    against Babylon(EU) and the people of Leb Kamai.[e]
I will send foreigners(EV) to Babylon
    to winnow(EW) her and to devastate her land;
they will oppose her on every side
    in the day(EX) of her disaster.
Let not the archer string his bow,(EY)
    nor let him put on his armor.(EZ)
Do not spare her young men;
    completely destroy[f] her army.
They will fall(FA) down slain in Babylon,[g]
    fatally wounded in her streets.(FB)
For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken(FC)
    by their God, the Lord Almighty,
though their land[h] is full of guilt(FD)
    before the Holy One of Israel.

“Flee(FE) from Babylon!
    Run for your lives!
    Do not be destroyed because of her sins.(FF)
It is time(FG) for the Lord’s vengeance;(FH)
    he will repay(FI) her what she deserves.
Babylon was a gold cup(FJ) in the Lord’s hand;
    she made the whole earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
    therefore they have now gone mad.
Babylon will suddenly fall(FK) and be broken.
    Wail over her!
Get balm(FL) for her pain;
    perhaps she can be healed.

“‘We would have healed Babylon,
    but she cannot be healed;
let us leave(FM) her and each go to our own land,
    for her judgment(FN) reaches to the skies,
    it rises as high as the heavens.’

10 “‘The Lord has vindicated(FO) us;
    come, let us tell in Zion
    what the Lord our God has done.’(FP)

11 “Sharpen the arrows,(FQ)
    take up the shields!(FR)
The Lord has stirred up the kings(FS) of the Medes,(FT)
    because his purpose(FU) is to destroy Babylon.
The Lord will take vengeance,(FV)
    vengeance for his temple.(FW)
12 Lift up a banner(FX) against the walls of Babylon!
    Reinforce the guard,
station the watchmen,(FY)
    prepare an ambush!(FZ)
The Lord will carry out his purpose,(GA)
    his decree against the people of Babylon.
13 You who live by many waters(GB)
    and are rich in treasures,(GC)
your end has come,
    the time for you to be destroyed.(GD)
14 The Lord Almighty has sworn by himself:(GE)
    I will surely fill you with troops, as with a swarm of locusts,(GF)
    and they will shout(GG) in triumph over you.
