Israel’s Mourning Turned to Joy
31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the (A)God of all the (B)families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”
2 This is what the Lord says:
“The people who survived the sword
(C)Found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when it went to (D)find its rest.”
3 The Lord appeared to [a]him [b]long ago, saying,
“I have (E)loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore I have drawn you out with (F)kindness.
4 (G)I will build you again and you will be rebuilt,
Virgin of Israel!
You will [c]take up your (H)tambourines again,
And go out to the dances of the (I)revelers.
5 Again you will (J)plant vineyards
On the [d]hills of Samaria;
The planters will plant
And will [e]enjoy the fruit.
6 For there will be a day when watchmen
On the hills of Ephraim call out,
‘Arise, and (K)let’s go up to Zion,
To the Lord our God.’”
7 For this is what the Lord says:
“(L)Sing aloud with joy for Jacob,
And be joyful with the [f](M)chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘Lord, (N)save Your people,
The (O)remnant of Israel!’
8 Behold, I am (P)bringing them from the north country,
And I will (Q)gather them from the remote parts of the earth,
Among them those who are (R)blind and those who (S)limp,
The pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
They will return here as a great assembly.
9 (T)They will come with weeping,
And by pleading I will bring them;
I will lead them by (U)streams of waters,
On a straight path on which they will (V)not stumble;
For I am a (W)father to Israel,
And Ephraim is (X)My firstborn.”
10 Hear the word of the Lord, you nations,
And declare it in the (Y)coastlands far away,
And say, “He who scattered Israel will (Z)gather him,
And He will keep him as a (AA)shepherd keeps his flock.”
11 For the Lord has (AB)ransomed Jacob
And redeemed him from the hand of him who was (AC)stronger than he.
12 “They will (AD)come and shout for joy on the (AE)height of Zion,
And they will be (AF)radiant over the [g]bounty of the Lord—
Over the (AG)grain, the new wine, the oil,
And over the young of the (AH)flock and the herd.
And their life will be like a (AI)watered garden,
And they will (AJ)never languish again.
13 Then the virgin will rejoice in the (AK)dance,
And the young men and the old together;
For I will (AL)turn their mourning into joy
And comfort them, and give them (AM)joy for their sorrow.
14 I will refresh the soul of the priests with [h]abundance,
And My people will be (AN)satisfied with My goodness,” declares the Lord.
15 This is what the Lord says:
“(AO)A voice is heard in (AP)Ramah,
Lamenting and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She (AQ)refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because (AR)they are no more.”
16 This is what the Lord says:
“(AS)Restrain your voice from weeping
And your eyes from tears;
For your (AT)work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord,
“And they will (AU)return from the land of the enemy.
17 There is (AV)hope for your future,” declares the Lord,
“And your children will return to their own territory.
18 I have certainly heard Ephraim (AW)grieving,
‘You have (AX)disciplined me, and I was corrected,
Like an untrained (AY)calf;
(AZ)Bring me back that I may be restored,
For You are the Lord my God.
19 For after I turned back, I (BA)repented;
And after I was instructed, I [i](BB)slapped my thigh;
I was (BC)ashamed and also humiliated
Because I bore the shame of my youth.’
20 Is (BD)Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a delightful child?
Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him,
I certainly still remember him;
Therefore My [j](BE)heart yearns for him;
I will certainly (BF)have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.
21 “Set up roadmarks for yourself,
Place guideposts for yourself;
(BG)Direct your [k]mind to the highway,
The way by which you went.
(BH)Return, O virgin of Israel,
Return to these your cities.
22 How long will you waver,
You (BI)rebellious daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
A woman will shelter a man.”
23 This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Once again they will speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities when I (BJ)restore their fortunes,
24 Judah and all its cities will (BM)live together in it, the farmers and those who travel with flocks. 25 (BN)For I give plenty of water to the weary ones, and [l]refresh everyone who languishes.” 26 At this I (BO)awoke and looked, and my (BP)sleep had been pleasant to me.
A New Covenant
27 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will (BQ)sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of mankind and the seed of animals. 28 And just as I have (BR)watched over them to (BS)uproot them, tear them down, ruin, destroy, and bring disaster on them, so I will watch over them to (BT)build and to plant them,” declares the Lord.
29 “In those days they will no longer say,
‘(BU)The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
[m]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt.’
30 But (BV)everyone will die for his own wrongdoing; each person who eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will become blunt.
31 “(BW)Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a (BX)new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the (BY)covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I (BZ)took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My (CA)covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “For (CB)this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “(CC)I will put My law within them and write it on their heart; and (CD)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will (CE)not teach again, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all (CF)know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will (CG)forgive their wrongdoing, and their (CH)sin I will no longer remember.”
35 This is what the Lord says,
He who (CI)gives the sun for light by day
And the [n]fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
Who (CJ)stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
(CK)The Lord of armies is His name:
36 “(CL)If [o]this fixed order departs
From Me,” declares the Lord,
“Then the descendants of Israel also will (CM)cease
To be a nation before Me [p]forever.”
37 This is what the Lord says:
“(CN)If the heavens above can be measured
And the foundations of the earth searched out below,
Then I will also (CO)reject all the descendants of Israel
For everything that they have done,” declares the Lord.
38 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the (CP)city will be rebuilt for the Lord from the (CQ)Tower of Hananel to the (CR)Corner Gate. 39 The (CS)measuring line will go out farther straight ahead, to the hill Gareb; then it will turn to Goah. 40 And (CT)the entire valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook (CU)Kidron to the corner of the (CV)Horse Gate toward the east, shall be (CW)holy to the Lord; it will not be uprooted or overthrown ever again.”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
32 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the (CX)tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 Now at that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was imprisoned in the (CY)courtyard of the guard, which was at the house of the king of Judah, 3 because Zedekiah king of Judah had (CZ)imprisoned him, saying, “Why do you (DA)prophesy, saying, ‘(DB)This is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (DC)hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will take it; 4 and Zedekiah king of Judah will (DD)not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but he will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon, and he will (DE)speak with him [q]face to face and see him eye to eye. 5 Then he will (DF)take Zedekiah to Babylon, and he will be there until I visit him,” declares the Lord. “If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will (DG)not succeed”’?”
6 And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 7 ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, “Buy for yourself my field which is at (DH)Anathoth, for you have the (DI)right of redemption to buy it.”’ 8 Then my uncle’s son Hanamel came to me in the (DJ)courtyard of the guard in accordance with the word of the Lord and said to me, ‘Buy my field, please, that is at (DK)Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for you have the right of possession and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the (DL)word of the Lord.
9 “So I bought the field which was in Anathoth from Hanamel my uncle’s son, and I (DM)weighed out the silver for him, seventeen (DN)shekels of silver. 10 And I [r](DO)signed and (DP)sealed the deed, and (DQ)called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took the deeds of purchase, both the sealed copy containing the (DR)terms and conditions and the open copy; 12 and I gave the deed of purchase to (DS)Baruch the son of (DT)Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of Hanamel my uncle’s son and in the sight of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, in the sight of all the Jews who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard. 13 And I commanded Baruch in their sight, saying, 14 ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Take these deeds, this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, so that they may [s]last a long time.” 15 For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “(DU)Houses and fields and vineyards will again be purchased in this land.”’
Jeremiah Prays and God Explains
16 “After giving the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I (DV)prayed to the Lord, saying, 17 ‘(DW)Oh, Lord [t]God! Behold, You Yourself have (DX)made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! (DY)Nothing is too difficult for You, 18 who (DZ)shows mercy to thousands, but (EA)repays the wrongdoing of fathers into the laps of their children after them, (EB)great and (EC)mighty God. The (ED)Lord of armies is His name; 19 (EE)great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose (EF)eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of mankind, (EG)giving to everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds; 20 who has (EH)accomplished signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and even to this day both in Israel and among mankind; and You have (EI)made a name for Yourself, as at this day. 21 You (EJ)brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders, and with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror; 22 and You gave them this land, which You (EK)swore to their forefathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 They (EL)came in and took possession of it, but they (EM)did not obey Your voice or (EN)walk in Your Law; they did not do [u]anything that You commanded them to do; therefore You have made (EO)all this disaster happen to them. 24 Behold, the (EP)assault ramps have reached the city to take it; and the city has been (EQ)handed over to the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the (ER)sword, the famine, and the plague; and what You have spoken has (ES)come to pass; and behold, You see it. 25 Yet You have said to me, Lord [v]God, “Buy for yourself the field with money and call in witnesses”—although the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans.’”
26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 27 “Behold, I am the Lord, the (ET)God of all flesh; is anything (EU)too difficult for Me?” 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am going to (EV)hand this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it. 29 And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will enter and (EW)set this city on fire and burn it, with the (EX)houses where people have offered incense to Baal on their roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger. 30 For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been doing only (EY)evil in My sight since their youth; for the sons of Israel have been only (EZ)provoking Me to anger by the work of their hands,” declares the Lord. 31 “Indeed this city has been to Me a (FA)provocation of My anger and My wrath since the day that they built it, even to this day, so that it should be (FB)removed from My sight, 32 because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah which they have done to provoke Me to anger—they, their (FC)kings, their leaders, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 They have turned their back to Me and not their face; though I taught them, (FD)teaching again and again, they would not listen to accept discipline. 34 But they (FE)put their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. 35 They built the (FF)high places of Baal that are in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to make their sons and their daughters pass through the fire to (FG)Molech, which I had not commanded them, nor had it [w]entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to mislead Judah to sin.
36 “Now therefore the Lord God of Israel says the following concerning this city of which you say, ‘It has been (FH)handed over to the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by plague’: 37 Behold, I am going to (FI)gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My anger, in My wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them back to this place and (FJ)have them live in safety. 38 They shall be (FK)My people, and I will be their God; 39 and I will (FL)give them one heart and one way, so that they will fear Me always, for their own (FM)good and for the good of their children after them. 40 I will make an (FN)everlasting covenant with them that I will (FO)not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will (FP)put the fear of Me in their hearts, so that they will not turn away from Me. 41 I will (FQ)rejoice over them to do them good and will [x]faithfully (FR)plant them in this land with (FS)all My heart and all My soul. 42 For this is what the Lord says: ‘(FT)Just as I brought all this great disaster on this people, so I am going to (FU)bring on them all the good that I am promising them. 43 And (FV)fields will be purchased in this land of which you say, “(FW)It is a desolation, without man or animal; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans.” 44 People will buy fields for money, [y](FX)sign and seal [z]deeds, and call in witnesses in the (FY)land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the [aa]Negev; for I will (FZ)restore their fortunes,’ declares the Lord.”

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God(A) of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”
2 This is what the Lord says:
“The people who survive the sword
will find favor(B) in the wilderness;
I will come to give rest(C) to Israel.”
3 The Lord appeared to us in the past,[a] saying:
“I have loved(D) you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn(E) you with unfailing kindness.
4 I will build you up again,
and you, Virgin(F) Israel, will be rebuilt.(G)
Again you will take up your timbrels(H)
and go out to dance(I) with the joyful.(J)
5 Again you will plant(K) vineyards
on the hills of Samaria;(L)
the farmers will plant them
and enjoy their fruit.(M)
6 There will be a day when watchmen(N) cry out
on the hills of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Zion,
to the Lord our God.’”(O)
7 This is what the Lord says:
“Sing(P) with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost(Q) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
‘Lord, save(R) your people,
the remnant(S) of Israel.’
8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north(T)
and gather(U) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(V) and the lame,(W)
expectant mothers and women in labor;
a great throng will return.
9 They will come with weeping;(X)
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(Y) them beside streams of water(Z)
on a level(AA) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(AB)
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:(AC)
‘He who scattered(AD) Israel will gather(AE) them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(AF)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
and redeem(AG) them from the hand of those stronger(AH) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(AI) on the heights(AJ) of Zion;
they will rejoice in the bounty(AK) of the Lord—
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(AL)
the young of the flocks(AM) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(AN)
and they will sorrow(AO) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(AP) into gladness;
I will give them comfort(AQ) and joy(AR) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(AS) the priests(AT) with abundance,
and my people will be filled with my bounty,(AU)”
declares the Lord.
15 This is what the Lord says:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,(AV)
mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,(AW)
because they are no more.”(AX)
16 This is what the Lord says:
“Restrain your voice from weeping
and your eyes from tears,(AY)
for your work will be rewarded,(AZ)”
declares the Lord.
“They will return(BA) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(BB) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
“Your children(BC) will return to their own land.
18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
‘You disciplined(BD) me like an unruly calf,(BE)
and I have been disciplined.
Restore(BF) me, and I will return,
because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(BG)
I repented;
after I came to understand,
I beat(BH) my breast.
I was ashamed(BI) and humiliated
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(BJ)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
the child(BK) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
I still remember(BL) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
I have great compassion(BM) for him,”
declares the Lord.
21 “Set up road signs;
put up guideposts.(BN)
Take note of the highway,(BO)
the road that you take.
Return,(BP) Virgin(BQ) Israel,
return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(BR)
unfaithful(BS) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(BT) on earth—
the woman will return to[b](BU) the man.”
23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[c](BV) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(BW) you, you prosperous city,(BX) you sacred mountain.’(BY) 24 People will live(BZ) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(CA) 25 I will refresh the weary(CB) and satisfy the faint.”(CC)
26 At this I awoke(CD) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.
27 “The days are coming,”(CE) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(CF) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(CG) over them to uproot(CH) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(CI) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(CJ) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,
30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(CM) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.
31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will make a new covenant(CN)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(CO)
I made with their ancestors(CP)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,(CQ)
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband(CR) to[d] them,[e]”
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(CS)
and write it on their hearts.(CT)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(CU)
34 No longer will they teach(CV) their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(CW) me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(CX) their wickedness
and will remember their sins(CY) no more.”
35 This is what the Lord says,
he who appoints(CZ) the sun
to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
to shine by night,(DA)
who stirs up the sea(DB)
so that its waves roar(DC)—
the Lord Almighty is his name:(DD)
36 “Only if these decrees(DE) vanish from my sight,”
declares the Lord,
“will Israel(DF) ever cease
being a nation before me.”
37 This is what the Lord says:
“Only if the heavens above can be measured(DG)
and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(DH) all the descendants of Israel
because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.
38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(DI) for me from the Tower of Hananel(DJ) to the Corner Gate.(DK) 39 The measuring line(DL) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(DM) where dead bodies(DN) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(DO) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(DP) will be holy(DQ) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”
Jeremiah Buys a Field
32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(DR) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(DS) year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(DT) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(DU) in the courtyard of the guard(DV) in the royal palace of Judah.
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(DW) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(DX) it. 4 Zedekiah(DY) king of Judah will not escape(DZ) the Babylonians[f](EA) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. 5 He will take(EB) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(EC) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(ED)
6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(EE) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(EF) to buy it.’
8 “Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(EG) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’
“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; 9 so I bought the field(EH) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[g] of silver.(EI) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(EJ) had it witnessed,(EK) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruch(EL) son of Neriah,(EM) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed(EN) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(EO)
16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(EP) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:
17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(EQ) you have made the heavens and the earth(ER) by your great power and outstretched arm.(ES) Nothing is too hard(ET) for you. 18 You show love(EU) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(EV) of their children(EW) after them. Great and mighty God,(EX) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(EY) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(EZ) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(FA) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(FB) 20 You performed signs and wonders(FC) in Egypt(FD) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(FE) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(FF) and an outstretched arm(FG) and with great terror.(FH) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(FI) 23 They came in and took possession(FJ) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(FK) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(FL) on them.
24 “See how the siege ramps(FM) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(FN) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said(FO) has happened,(FP) as you now see. 25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field(FQ) with silver and have the transaction witnessed.(FR)’”
26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(FS) Is anything too hard for me?(FT) 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar(FU) king of Babylon, who will capture it.(FV) 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,(FW) along with the houses(FX) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings(FY) to other gods.(FZ)
30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;(GA) indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger(GB) with what their hands have made,(GC) declares the Lord. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city(GD) has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove(GE) it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked(GF) me by all the evil(GG) they have done—they, their kings and officials,(GH) their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs(GI) to me and not their faces; though I taught(GJ) them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.(GK) 34 They set up their vile images(GL) in the house that bears my Name(GM) and defiled(GN) it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(GO) to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek,(GP) though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind(GQ)—that they should do such a detestable(GR) thing and so make Judah sin.(GS)
36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague(GT) it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather(GU) them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger(GV) and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.(GW) 38 They will be my people,(GX) and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness(GY) of heart and action, so that they will always fear(GZ) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant(HA) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire(HB) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.(HC) 41 I will rejoice(HD) in doing them good(HE) and will assuredly plant(HF) them in this land with all my heart and soul.(HG)
42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity(HH) on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised(HI) them. 43 Once more fields will be bought(HJ) in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate(HK) waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds(HL) will be signed, sealed and witnessed(HM) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(HN) because I will restore(HO) their fortunes,[h] declares the Lord.”

Testing the Spirits
4 (A)Beloved, do not believe every (B)spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because (C)many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: (D)every spirit that (E)confesses that (F)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that (G)does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the (H)antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and (I)now it is already in the world. 4 You are from God, (J)little children, and (K)have overcome them; because (L)greater is He who is in you than (M)he who is in the world. 5 (N)They are from the world, therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 (O)We are from God. (P)The one who knows God listens to us; (Q)the one who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know (R)the spirit of truth and (S)the spirit of error.
God Is Love

On Denying the Incarnation
4 Dear friends,(A) do not believe every spirit,(B) but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.(C) 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(D) is from God,(E) 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(F) which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.(G)
4 You, dear children,(H) are from God and have overcome them,(I) because the one who is in you(J) is greater than the one who is in the world.(K) 5 They are from the world(L) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.(M) This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth(N) and the spirit of falsehood.(O)
God’s Love and Ours
7 Dear friends, let us love one another,(P) for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God(Q) and knows God.(R) 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.(S) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son(T) into the world that we might live through him.(U) 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us(V) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.(W) 11 Dear friends,(X) since God so loved us,(Y) we also ought to love one another.(Z) 12 No one has ever seen God;(AA) but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.(AB)
13 This is how we know(AC) that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.(AD) 14 And we have seen and testify(AE) that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.(AF) 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God,(AG) God lives in them and they in God.(AH) 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love.(AI) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.(AJ) 17 This is how love is made complete(AK) among us so that we will have confidence(AL) on the day of judgment:(AM) In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,(AN) because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love because he first loved us.(AO) 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister(AP) is a liar.(AQ) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,(AR) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.(AS) 21 And he has given us this command:(AT) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.(AU)
