From Adam to Noah

5 This is the written account(A) of Adam’s family line.(B)

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.(C) 2 He created them(D) male and female(E) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[a] when they were created.

3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;(F) and he named him Seth.(G) 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.(H)

6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[b] of Enosh.(I) 7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.(J) 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.(K) 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.(L) 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.(M) 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.(N) 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God(O) 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God;(P) then he was no more, because God took him away.(Q)

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.(R) 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[c](S) and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.(T)” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old,(U) he became the father of Shem,(V) Ham and Japheth.(W)

Wickedness in the World

6 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth(X) and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God(Y) saw that the daughters(Z) of humans were beautiful,(AA) and they married(AB) any of them they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit(AC) will not contend with[d] humans forever,(AD) for they are mortal[e];(AE) their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

4 The Nephilim(AF) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans(AG) and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.(AH)

5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth,(AI) and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.(AJ) 6 The Lord regretted(AK) that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth(AL) the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.(AM)” 8 But Noah(AN) found favor in the eyes of the Lord.(AO)

Noah and the Flood

9 This is the account(AP) of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless(AQ) among the people of his time,(AR) and he walked faithfully with God.(AS) 10 Noah had three sons: Shem,(AT) Ham and Japheth.(AU)

11 Now the earth was corrupt(AV) in God’s sight and was full of violence.(AW) 12 God saw how corrupt(AX) the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.(AY) 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy(AZ) both them and the earth.(BA) 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress[f] wood;(BB) make rooms in it and coat it with pitch(BC) inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.[g] 16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit[h] high all around.[i] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters(BD) on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.(BE) 18 But I will establish my covenant with you,(BF) and you will enter the ark(BG)—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.(BH) 20 Two(BI) of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind(BJ) of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.(BK) 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.(BL)

7 The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family,(BM) because I have found you righteous(BN) in this generation. 2 Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean(BO) animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3 and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive(BP) throughout the earth. 4 Seven days from now I will send rain(BQ) on the earth(BR) for forty days(BS) and forty nights,(BT) and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.(BU)”

5 And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.(BV)

6 Noah was six hundred years old(BW) when the floodwaters came on the earth. 7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives entered the ark(BX) to escape the waters of the flood. 8 Pairs of clean and unclean(BY) animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground, 9 male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah.(BZ) 10 And after the seven days(CA) the floodwaters came on the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life,(CB) on the seventeenth day of the second month(CC)—on that day all the springs of the great deep(CD) burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens(CE) were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.(CF)

13 On that very day Noah and his sons,(CG) Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.(CH) 14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind,(CI) everything with wings. 15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.(CJ) 16 The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah.(CK) Then the Lord shut him in.

17 For forty days(CL) the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered.(CM) 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.[j][k] (CN) 21 Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.(CO) 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life(CP) in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth.(CQ) Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.(CR)

24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.(CS)

The Family of Adam(A)

5 This is the book of the (B)genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in (C)the likeness of God. 2 He created them (D)male and female, and (E)blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son (F)in his own likeness, after his image, and (G)named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, (H)the days of Adam were eight hundred years; (I)and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; (J)and he died.

6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot (K)Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.

9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot [a]Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died.

12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.

15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.

18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot (L)Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.

21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch (M)walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And (N)Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God (O)took him.

25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.

28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name (P)Noah,[b] saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground (Q)which the Lord has cursed.” 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.

32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot (R)Shem, Ham, (S)and Japheth.

The Wickedness and Judgment of Man

6 Now it came to pass, (T)when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they (U)took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

3 And the Lord said, (V)“My Spirit shall not (W)strive[c] with man forever, (X)for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” 4 There were [d]giants on the earth in those (Y)days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

5 Then [e]the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every (Z)intent[f] of the thoughts of his heart was only evil [g]continually. 6 And (AA)the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and (AB)He was grieved in His (AC)heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will (AD)destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah (AE)found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah Pleases God

9 This is the genealogy of Noah. (AF)Noah was a just man, [h]perfect in his generations. Noah (AG)walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: (AH)Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt (AI)before God, and the earth was (AJ)filled with violence. 12 So God (AK)looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for (AL)all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

The Ark Prepared(AM)

13 And God said to Noah, (AN)“The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; (AO)and behold, (AP)I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make [i]rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred [j]cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 (AQ)And behold, I Myself am bringing (AR)floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall (AS)die. 18 But I will establish My (AT)covenant with you; and (AU)you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring (AV)two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind (AW)will come to you to keep them alive. 21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.”

22 (AX)Thus Noah did; (AY)according to all that (AZ)God commanded him, so he did.

The Great Flood(BA)

7 Then the (BB)Lord said to Noah, (BC)“Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that (BD)you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2 You shall take with you seven each of every (BE)clean animal, a male and his female; (BF)two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3 also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep [k]the species alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after (BG)seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth (BH)forty days and forty nights, and I will [l]destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” 5 (BI)And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. 6 Noah was (BJ)six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.

7 (BK)So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, 9 two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on (BL)that day all (BM)the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the (BN)windows of heaven were opened. 12 (BO)And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13 On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark— 14 (BP)they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every (BQ)sort. 15 And they (BR)went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in (BS)as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.

17 (BT)Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, (BU)and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21 (BV)And all flesh died that moved on [m]the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All in (BW)whose nostrils was the breath [n]of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. 23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only (BX)Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. 24 (BY)And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.

28 Now Lamech lived 182 years, and fathered a son. 29 And he named him Noah, saying, “This one will give us comfort from our work and from the hard labor of our hands caused by (G)the ground which the Lord has cursed.” 30 Then Lamech lived 595 years after he fathered Noah, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32 Now after Noah was (H)five hundred years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The Corruption of Mankind

6 Now it came about, when mankind began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were [b]beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “(I)My Spirit will not [c]remain with man forever, [d](J)because he is also flesh; [e]nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The [f](K)Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that (L)every intent of the thoughts of [g]their hearts was only evil continually. 6 So (M)the Lord was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was (N)grieved [h]in His heart. 7 Then the Lord said, “(O)I will wipe out mankind whom I have created from the face of the land; mankind, and animals as well, and crawling things, and the birds of the sky. For (P)I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But (Q)Noah (R)found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a (S)righteous man, [i](T)blameless in his generation. Noah (U)walked with God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was (V)corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was (W)filled with violence. 12 And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for [j](X)humanity had corrupted its way upon the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, “(Y)The end of [k]humanity has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of [l]people; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of [m]gopher wood; you shall make the ark with compartments, and [n]cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be [o]three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a [p]window for the ark, and finish it to a [q]cubit from [r]the top; and put the door of the ark on the side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 Now behold, (Z)I Myself am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 But I will establish (AA)My covenant with you; and (AB)you shall enter the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 (AC)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 (AD)Of the birds according to their kind, and of the animals according to their kind, of every crawling thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of every (AE)food that is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and them.” 22 (AF)So Noah did these things; according to everything that God had commanded him, so he did.

The Flood

7 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be (AG)righteous before Me in this generation. 2 You shall take [s]with you [t]seven pairs of every (AH)clean animal, a male and his female; and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and his female; 3 also of the birds of the sky, [u]seven pairs, male and female, to keep their [v]offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after (AI)seven more days, I will send rain on the earth for (AJ)forty days and forty nights; and I will wipe out from the face of the land (AK)every living thing that I have made.” 5 So (AL)Noah acted in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him.

6 Now Noah was (AM)six hundred years old when the flood of water [w]came upon the earth. 7 Then (AN)Noah and his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8 (AO)Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that crawls on the ground, 9 they all went into the ark to Noah [x]by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 Now it came about after (AP)the seven days, that the waters of the flood [y]came upon the earth. 11 In the (AQ)six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all (AR)the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the [z]floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 (AS)The rain [aa]fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On this very same day (AT)Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to [ab]their kind, and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, [ac]all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, (AU)by twos of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed the door behind him.

The Descendants of Adam

5 This is the written account of the descendants of Adam. When God created human beings,[a] he made them to be like himself. 2 He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.”

3 When Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of a son who was just like him—in his very image. He named his son Seth. 4 After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

6 When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of[b] Enosh. 7 After the birth of[c] Enosh, Seth lived another 807 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 8 Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.

9 When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After the birth of Kenan, Enosh lived another 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 11 Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After the birth of Mahalalel, Kenan lived another 840 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 14 Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16 After the birth of Jared, Mahalalel lived another 830 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 17 Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After the birth of Enoch, Jared lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 20 Jared lived 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 Enoch lived 365 years, 24 walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.

25 When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After the birth of Lamech, Methuselah lived another 782 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 27 Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech was 182 years old, he became the father of a son. 29 Lamech named his son Noah, for he said, “May he bring us relief[d] from our work and the painful labor of farming this ground that the Lord has cursed.” 30 After the birth of Noah, Lamech lived another 595 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 31 Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

A World Gone Wrong

6 Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them. 2 The sons of God saw the beautiful women[e] and took any they wanted as their wives. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with[f] humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”

4 In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.

5 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. 6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. 7 And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” 8 But Noah found favor with the Lord.

The Story of Noah

9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God. 10 Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. 12 God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. 13 So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!

14 “Build a large boat[g] from cypress wood[h] and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. 15 Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.[i] 16 Leave an 18-inch opening[j] below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.

17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. 18 But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 19 Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood. 20 Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive. 21 And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.”

22 So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.

The Flood Covers the Earth

7 When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. 2 Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice,[k] and take one pair of each of the others. 3 Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. 4 Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.”

5 So Noah did everything as the Lord commanded him.

6 Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth. 7 He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives. 8 With them were all the various kinds of animals—those approved for eating and for sacrifice and those that were not—along with all the birds and the small animals that scurry along the ground. 9 They entered the boat in pairs, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. 10 After seven days, the waters of the flood came and covered the earth.

11 When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky. 12 The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights.

13 That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives. 14 With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal—domestic and wild, large and small—along with birds of every kind. 15 Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes. 16 A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord closed the door behind them.

17 For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth. 18 As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface. 19 Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth, 20 rising more than twenty-two feet[l] above the highest peaks. 21 All the living things on earth died—birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people. 22 Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died. 23 God wiped out every living thing on the earth—people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat. 24 And the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days.

The Family Tree of the Human Race

5 1-2 This is the family tree of the human race: When God created the human race, he made it godlike, with a nature akin to God. He created both male and female and blessed them, the whole human race.

3-5 When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son who was just like him, his very spirit and image, and named him Seth. After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, having more sons and daughters. Adam lived a total of 930 years. And he died.

6-8 When Seth was 105 years old, he had Enosh. After Seth had Enosh, he lived another 807 years, having more sons and daughters. Seth lived a total of 912 years. And he died.

18-20 When Jared was 162 years old, he had Enoch. After he had Enoch, he lived another 800 years, having more sons and daughters. Jared lived a total of 962 years. And he died.

21-23 When Enoch was sixty-five years old, he had Methuselah. Enoch walked steadily with God. After he had Methuselah, he lived another 300 years, having more sons and daughters. Enoch lived a total of 365 years.

24 Enoch walked steadily with God. And then one day he was simply gone: God took him.

25-27 When Methuselah was 187 years old, he had Lamech. After he had Lamech, he lived another 782 years. Methuselah lived a total of 969 years. And he died.

28-31 When Lamech was 182 years old, he had a son. He named him Noah, saying, “This one will give us a break from the hard work of farming the ground that God cursed.” After Lamech had Noah, he lived another 595 years, having more sons and daughters. Lamech lived a total of 777 years. And he died.

32 When Noah was 500 years old, he had Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Giants in the Land

6 1-2 When the human race began to increase, with more and more daughters being born, the sons of God noticed that the daughters of men were beautiful. They looked them over and picked out wives for themselves.

3 Then God said, “I’m not going to breathe life into men and women endlessly. Eventually they’re going to die; from now on they can expect a life span of 120 years.”

4 This was back in the days (and also later) when there were giants in the land. The giants came from the union of the sons of God and the daughters of men. These were the mighty men of ancient lore, the famous ones.

Noah and His Sons

5-7 God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night. God was sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart. God said, “I’ll get rid of my ruined creation, make a clean sweep: people, animals, snakes and bugs, birds—the works. I’m sorry I made them.”

8 But Noah was different. God liked what he saw in Noah.

9-10 This is the story of Noah: Noah was a good man, a man of integrity in his community. Noah walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11-12 As far as God was concerned, the Earth had become a sewer; there was violence everywhere. God took one look and saw how bad it was, everyone corrupt and corrupting—life itself corrupt to the core.

13 God said to Noah, “It’s all over. It’s the end of the human race. The violence is everywhere; I’m making a clean sweep.

14-16 “Build yourself a ship from teakwood. Make rooms in it. Coat it with pitch inside and out. Make it 450 feet long, seventy-five feet wide, and forty-five feet high. Build a roof for it and put in a window eighteen inches from the top; put in a door on the side of the ship; and make three decks, lower, middle, and upper.

17 “I’m going to bring a flood on the Earth that will destroy everything alive under Heaven. Total destruction.

18-21 “But I’m going to establish a covenant with you: You’ll board the ship, and your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives will come on board with you. You are also to take two of each living creature, a male and a female, on board the ship, to preserve their lives with you: two of every species of bird, mammal, and reptile—two of everything so as to preserve their lives along with yours. Also get all the food you’ll need and store it up for you and them.”

22 Noah did everything God commanded him to do.

7 Next God said to Noah, “Now board the ship, you and all your family—out of everyone in this generation, you’re the righteous one.

2-4 “Take on board with you seven pairs of every clean animal, a male and a female; one pair of every unclean animal, a male and a female; and seven pairs of every kind of bird, a male and a female, to insure their survival on Earth. In just seven days I will pour rain on Earth for forty days and forty nights. I’ll make a clean sweep of everything that I’ve made.”

5 Noah did everything God commanded him.

6-10 Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters covered the Earth. Noah and his wife and sons and their wives boarded the ship to escape the flood. Clean and unclean animals, birds, and all the crawling creatures came in pairs to Noah and to the ship, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. In seven days the floodwaters came.

11-12 It was the six-hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month that it happened: all the underground springs erupted and all the windows of Heaven were thrown open. Rain poured for forty days and forty nights.

13-16 That’s the day Noah and his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, accompanied by his wife and his sons’ wives, boarded the ship. And with them every kind of wild and domestic animal, right down to all the kinds of creatures that crawl and all kinds of birds and anything that flies. They came to Noah and to the ship in pairs—everything and anything that had the breath of life in it, male and female of every creature came just as God had commanded Noah. Then God shut the door behind him.

17-23 The flood continued forty days and the waters rose and lifted the ship high over the Earth. The waters kept rising, the flood deepened on the Earth, the ship floated on the surface. The flood got worse until all the highest mountains were covered—the high-water mark reached twenty feet above the crest of the mountains. Everything died. Anything that moved—dead. Birds, farm animals, wild animals, the entire teeming exuberance of life—dead. And all people—dead. Every living, breathing creature that lived on dry land died; he wiped out the whole works—people and animals, crawling creatures and flying birds, every last one of them, gone. Only Noah and his company on the ship lived.

24 The floodwaters took over for 150 days.
