Ezequiel 5-9

5 Y tú, hijo de hombre, tómate un cuchillo agudo, toma una navaja de barbero, y hazla pasar sobre tu cabeza y tu barba; toma después una balanza de pesar y divide los cabellos. 2 Una tercera parte quemarás a fuego en medio de la ciudad, cuando se cumplan los días del asedio; y tomarás una tercera parte y la cortarás con espada alrededor de la ciudad; y una tercera parte esparcirás al viento, y yo desenvainaré espada en pos de ellos. 3 Tomarás también de allí unos pocos en número, y los atarás en la falda de tu manto. 4 Y tomarás otra vez de ellos, y los echarás en medio del fuego, y en el fuego los quemarás; de allí saldrá el fuego a toda la casa de Israel.

5 Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Esta es Jerusalén; la puse en medio de las naciones y de las tierras alrededor de ella. 6 Y ella cambió mis decretos y mis ordenanzas en impiedad más que las naciones, y más que las tierras que están alrededor de ella; porque desecharon mis decretos y mis mandamientos, y no anduvieron en ellos.

7 Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová: ¿Por haberos multiplicado más que las naciones que están alrededor de vosotros, no habéis andado en mis mandamientos, ni habéis guardado mis leyes? Ni aun según las leyes de las naciones que están alrededor de vosotros habéis andado. 8 Así, pues, ha dicho Jehová el Señor: He aquí yo estoy contra ti; sí, yo, y haré juicios en medio de ti ante los ojos de las naciones. 9 Y haré en ti lo que nunca hice, ni jamás haré cosa semejante, a causa de todas tus abominaciones. 10 Por eso los padres comerán a los hijos(A) en medio de ti, y los hijos comerán a sus padres; y haré en ti juicios, y esparciré a todos los vientos todo lo que quedare de ti. 11 Por tanto, vivo yo, dice Jehová el Señor, ciertamente por haber profanado mi santuario con todas tus abominaciones, te quebrantaré yo también; mi ojo no perdonará, ni tampoco tendré yo misericordia. 12 Una tercera parte de ti morirá de pestilencia y será consumida de hambre en medio de ti; y una tercera parte caerá a espada alrededor de ti; y una tercera parte esparciré a todos los vientos, y tras ellos desenvainaré espada.

13 Y se cumplirá mi furor y saciaré en ellos mi enojo, y tomaré satisfacción; y sabrán que yo Jehová he hablado en mi celo, cuando cumpla en ellos mi enojo. 14 Y te convertiré en soledad y en oprobio entre las naciones que están alrededor de ti, a los ojos de todo transeúnte. 15 Y serás oprobio y escarnio y escarmiento y espanto a las naciones que están alrededor de ti, cuando yo haga en ti juicios con furor e indignación, y en reprensiones de ira. Yo Jehová he hablado. 16 Cuando arroje yo sobre ellos las perniciosas saetas del hambre, que serán para destrucción, las cuales enviaré para destruiros, entonces aumentaré el hambre sobre vosotros, y quebrantaré entre vosotros el sustento del pan. 17 Enviaré, pues, sobre vosotros hambre, y bestias feroces que te destruyan; y pestilencia y sangre pasarán por en medio de ti, y enviaré sobre ti espada.(B) Yo Jehová he hablado.

Profecía contra los montes de Israel

6 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Hijo de hombre, pon tu rostro hacia los montes de Israel, y profetiza contra ellos. 3 Y dirás: Montes de Israel, oíd palabra de Jehová el Señor: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor a los montes y a los collados, a los arroyos y a los valles: He aquí que yo, yo haré venir sobre vosotros espada, y destruiré vuestros lugares altos. 4 Vuestros altares serán asolados, y vuestras imágenes del sol serán quebradas; y haré que caigan vuestros muertos delante de vuestros ídolos. 5 Y pondré los cuerpos muertos de los hijos de Israel delante de sus ídolos, y vuestros huesos esparciré en derredor de vuestros altares. 6 Dondequiera que habitéis, serán desiertas las ciudades, y los lugares altos serán asolados, para que sean asolados y se hagan desiertos vuestros altares; y vuestros ídolos serán quebrados y acabarán, vuestras imágenes del sol serán destruidas, y vuestras obras serán deshechas. 7 Y los muertos caerán en medio de vosotros; y sabréis que yo soy Jehová.

8 Mas dejaré un resto, de modo que tengáis entre las naciones algunos que escapen de la espada, cuando seáis esparcidos por las tierras. 9 Y los que de vosotros escaparen se acordarán de mí entre las naciones en las cuales serán cautivos; porque yo me quebranté a causa de su corazón fornicario que se apartó de mí, y a causa de sus ojos que fornicaron tras sus ídolos; y se avergonzarán de sí mismos, a causa de los males que hicieron en todas sus abominaciones. 10 Y sabrán que yo soy Jehová; no en vano dije que les había de hacer este mal.

11 Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Palmotea con tus manos, y golpea con tu pie, y di: ¡Ay, por todas las grandes abominaciones de la casa de Israel! porque con espada y con hambre y con pestilencia caerán. 12 El que esté lejos morirá de pestilencia, el que esté cerca caerá a espada, y el que quede y sea asediado morirá de hambre; así cumpliré en ellos mi enojo. 13 Y sabréis que yo soy Jehová, cuando sus muertos estén en medio de sus ídolos, en derredor de sus altares, sobre todo collado alto, en todas las cumbres de los montes, debajo de todo árbol frondoso y debajo de toda encina espesa, lugares donde ofrecieron incienso a todos sus ídolos. 14 Y extenderé mi mano contra ellos, y dondequiera que habiten haré la tierra más asolada y devastada que el desierto hacia Diblat; y conocerán que yo soy Jehová.

El fin viene

7 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Tú, hijo de hombre, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor a la tierra de Israel: El fin, el fin viene sobre los cuatro extremos de la tierra. 3 Ahora será el fin sobre ti, y enviaré sobre ti mi furor, y te juzgaré según tus caminos; y pondré sobre ti todas tus abominaciones. 4 Y mi ojo no te perdonará, ni tendré misericordia; antes pondré sobre ti tus caminos, y en medio de ti estarán tus abominaciones; y sabréis que yo soy Jehová.

5 Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Un mal, he aquí que viene un mal. 6 Viene el fin, el fin viene; se ha despertado contra ti; he aquí que viene. 7 La mañana viene para ti, oh morador de la tierra; el tiempo viene, cercano está el día; día de tumulto, y no de alegría, sobre los montes. 8 Ahora pronto derramaré mi ira sobre ti, y cumpliré en ti mi furor, y te juzgaré según tus caminos; y pondré sobre ti tus abominaciones. 9 Y mi ojo no perdonará, ni tendré misericordia; según tus caminos pondré sobre ti, y en medio de ti estarán tus abominaciones; y sabréis que yo Jehová soy el que castiga.

10 He aquí el día, he aquí que viene; ha salido la mañana; ha florecido la vara, ha reverdecido la soberbia. 11 La violencia se ha levantado en vara de maldad; ninguno quedará de ellos, ni de su multitud, ni uno de los suyos, ni habrá entre ellos quien se lamente. 12 El tiempo ha venido, se acercó el día; el que compra, no se alegre, y el que vende, no llore, porque la ira está sobre toda la multitud. 13 Porque el que vende no volverá a lo vendido, aunque queden vivos; porque la visión sobre toda la multitud no se revocará, y a causa de su iniquidad ninguno podrá amparar su vida.

14 Tocarán trompeta, y prepararán todas las cosas, y no habrá quien vaya a la batalla; porque mi ira está sobre toda la multitud. 15 De fuera espada, de dentro pestilencia y hambre; el que esté en el campo morirá a espada, y al que esté en la ciudad lo consumirá el hambre y la pestilencia. 16 Y los que escapen de ellos huirán y estarán sobre los montes como palomas de los valles, gimiendo todos, cada uno por su iniquidad. 17 Toda mano se debilitará, y toda rodilla será débil como el agua. 18 Se ceñirán también de cilicio, y les cubrirá terror; en todo rostro habrá vergüenza, y todas sus cabezas estarán rapadas. 19 Arrojarán su plata en las calles, y su oro será desechado; ni su plata ni su oro podrá librarlos en el día del furor de Jehová; no saciarán su alma, ni llenarán sus entrañas, porque ha sido tropiezo para su maldad. 20 Por cuanto convirtieron la gloria de su ornamento en soberbia, e hicieron de ello las imágenes de sus abominables ídolos, por eso se lo convertí en cosa repugnante. 21 En mano de extraños la entregué para ser saqueada, y será presa de los impíos de la tierra, y la profanarán. 22 Y apartaré de ellos mi rostro, y será violado mi lugar secreto; pues entrarán en él invasores y lo profanarán.

23 Haz una cadena, porque la tierra está llena de delitos de sangre, y la ciudad está llena de violencia. 24 Traeré, por tanto, los más perversos de las naciones, los cuales poseerán las casas de ellos; y haré cesar la soberbia de los poderosos, y sus santuarios serán profanados. 25 Destrucción viene; y buscarán la paz, y no la habrá. 26 Quebrantamiento vendrá sobre quebrantamiento, y habrá rumor sobre rumor; y buscarán respuesta del profeta, mas la ley se alejará del sacerdote, y de los ancianos el consejo. 27 El rey se enlutará, y el príncipe se vestirá de tristeza, y las manos del pueblo de la tierra temblarán; según su camino haré con ellos, y con los juicios de ellos los juzgaré; y sabrán que yo soy Jehová.

Visión de las abominaciones en Jerusalén

8 En el sexto año, en el mes sexto, a los cinco días del mes, aconteció que estaba yo sentado en mi casa, y los ancianos de Judá estaban sentados delante de mí, y allí se posó sobre mí la mano de Jehová el Señor. 2 Y miré, y he aquí una figura que parecía de hombre; desde sus lomos para abajo, fuego; y desde sus lomos para arriba parecía resplandor, el aspecto de bronce refulgente.(C) 3 Y aquella figura extendió la mano, y me tomó por las guedejas de mi cabeza; y el Espíritu me alzó entre el cielo y la tierra, y me llevó en visiones de Dios a Jerusalén, a la entrada de la puerta de adentro que mira hacia el norte, donde estaba la habitación de la imagen del celo, la que provoca a celos. 4 Y he aquí, allí estaba la gloria del Dios de Israel, como la visión que yo había visto en el campo.(D)

5 Y me dijo: Hijo de hombre, alza ahora tus ojos hacia el lado del norte. Y alcé mis ojos hacia el norte, y he aquí al norte, junto a la puerta del altar, aquella imagen del celo en la entrada. 6 Me dijo entonces: Hijo de hombre, ¿no ves lo que estos hacen, las grandes abominaciones que la casa de Israel hace aquí para alejarme de mi santuario? Pero vuélvete aún, y verás abominaciones mayores.

7 Y me llevó a la entrada del atrio, y miré, y he aquí en la pared un agujero. 8 Y me dijo: Hijo de hombre, cava ahora en la pared. Y cavé en la pared, y he aquí una puerta. 9 Me dijo luego: Entra, y ve las malvadas abominaciones que estos hacen allí. 10 Entré, pues, y miré; y he aquí toda forma de reptiles y bestias abominables, y todos los ídolos de la casa de Israel, que estaban pintados en la pared por todo alrededor. 11 Y delante de ellos estaban setenta varones de los ancianos de la casa de Israel, y Jaazanías hijo de Safán en medio de ellos, cada uno con su incensario en su mano; y subía una nube espesa de incienso. 12 Y me dijo: Hijo de hombre, ¿has visto las cosas que los ancianos de la casa de Israel hacen en tinieblas, cada uno en sus cámaras pintadas de imágenes? Porque dicen ellos: No nos ve Jehová; Jehová ha abandonado la tierra. 13 Me dijo después: Vuélvete aún, verás abominaciones mayores que hacen estos.

14 Y me llevó a la entrada de la puerta de la casa de Jehová, que está al norte; y he aquí mujeres que estaban allí sentadas endechando a Tamuz. 15 Luego me dijo: ¿No ves, hijo de hombre? Vuélvete aún, verás abominaciones mayores que estas.

16 Y me llevó al atrio de adentro de la casa de Jehová; y he aquí junto a la entrada del templo de Jehová, entre la entrada y el altar, como veinticinco varones, sus espaldas vueltas al templo de Jehová y sus rostros hacia el oriente, y adoraban al sol, postrándose hacia el oriente. 17 Y me dijo: ¿No has visto, hijo de hombre? ¿Es cosa liviana para la casa de Judá hacer las abominaciones que hacen aquí? Después que han llenado de maldad la tierra, se volvieron a mí para irritarme; he aquí que aplican el ramo a sus narices. 18 Pues también yo procederé con furor; no perdonará mi ojo, ni tendré misericordia; y gritarán a mis oídos con gran voz, y no los oiré.

Visión de la muerte de los culpables

9 Clamó en mis oídos con gran voz, diciendo: Los verdugos de la ciudad han llegado, y cada uno trae en su mano su instrumento para destruir. 2 Y he aquí que seis varones venían del camino de la puerta de arriba que mira hacia el norte, y cada uno traía en su mano su instrumento para destruir. Y entre ellos había un varón vestido de lino, el cual traía a su cintura un tintero de escribano; y entrados, se pararon junto al altar de bronce.

3 Y la gloria del Dios de Israel se elevó de encima del querubín, sobre el cual había estado, al umbral de la casa; y llamó Jehová al varón vestido de lino, que tenía a su cintura el tintero de escribano, 4 y le dijo Jehová: Pasa por en medio de la ciudad, por en medio de Jerusalén, y ponles una señal en la frente(E) a los hombres que gimen y que claman a causa de todas las abominaciones que se hacen en medio de ella. 5 Y a los otros dijo, oyéndolo yo: Pasad por la ciudad en pos de él, y matad; no perdone vuestro ojo, ni tengáis misericordia. 6 Matad a viejos, jóvenes y vírgenes, niños y mujeres, hasta que no quede ninguno; pero a todo aquel sobre el cual hubiere señal, no os acercaréis; y comenzaréis por mi santuario. Comenzaron, pues, desde los varones ancianos que estaban delante del templo. 7 Y les dijo: Contaminad la casa, y llenad los atrios de muertos; salid. Y salieron, y mataron en la ciudad. 8 Aconteció que cuando ellos iban matando y quedé yo solo, me postré sobre mi rostro, y clamé y dije: ¡Ah, Señor Jehová! ¿destruirás a todo el remanente de Israel derramando tu furor sobre Jerusalén?

9 Y me dijo: La maldad de la casa de Israel y de Judá es grande sobremanera, pues la tierra está llena de sangre, y la ciudad está llena de perversidad; porque han dicho: Ha abandonado Jehová la tierra, y Jehová no ve. 10 Así, pues, haré yo; mi ojo no perdonará, ni tendré misericordia; haré recaer el camino de ellos sobre sus propias cabezas.

11 Y he aquí que el varón vestido de lino, que tenía el tintero a su cintura, respondió una palabra, diciendo: He hecho conforme a todo lo que me mandaste.

Jerusalem’s Desolation Foretold

5 “As for you, son of man, take a (A)sharp sword; take and [a]use it as a barber’s razor on your head and beard. Then take (B)scales for weighing and divide [b]the hair. 2 A third you shall burn in the fire at the center of the city, when the (C)days of the siege are completed. Then you shall take a third and strike it with the sword all around [c]the city, and a third you shall scatter to the wind; for I will (D)unsheathe a sword behind them. 3 Take also a few hairs in number from [d]them and bind them in the hems of your robes. 4 Take again some of them and throw them into the fire and burn them in the fire; from it a fire will [e]spread to all the house of Israel.

5 “This is what the Lord [f]God says: ‘This is (E)Jerusalem; I have placed her at the (F)center of the nations, with lands around her. 6 But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes (G)more than the lands which surround her; for they have (H)rejected My ordinances and have not walked [g]in My statutes.’ 7 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you have (I)more turmoil than the nations that surround you and have not walked in My statutes, nor executed My ordinances, nor acted in accordance with the ordinances of the nations around you,’ 8 therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I, even I, am (J)against you, and I will (K)execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations. 9 And because of all your abominations I will do among you what I have (L)not done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10 Therefore, (M)fathers will eat their sons among you, and sons will eat their fathers; for I will execute judgments on you and (N)scatter all your remnant to every wind. 11 Therefore as I live,’ declares the Lord God, ‘Because you have (O)defiled My sanctuary with all your (P)detestable idols and with all your abominations, I definitely will also withdraw and My eye will have no pity, and I also will not spare. 12 A third of you will die by (Q)plague or perish by famine among you, a third will fall by the sword around you, and a third I will (R)scatter to every wind, and I will (S)unsheathe a sword behind them.

13 ‘Then My anger will be spent and I will satisfy My wrath on them, and I will be (T)appeased; then they will know that I, the Lord, have (U)spoken in My zeal, when I have spent My wrath upon them. 14 Moreover, I will make you a site of ruins and a (V)disgrace among the nations that surround you, in the sight of everyone who passes by. 15 So [h]it will be a disgrace, an object of abuse, a (W)warning, and an object of horror to the nations that surround you when I (X)execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and raging reprimands. I, the Lord, have spoken. 16 When I send against them the [i]deadly arrows of famine which [j]were for the destruction of those whom I will send to destroy you, then I will also intensify the famine upon you and break off your [k]provision of bread. 17 (Y)I will send on you famine and vicious animals, and they will bereave you of children; (Z)plague and bloodshed also will pass through you, and I will bring the sword on you. I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

Idolatrous Worship Denounced

6 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face toward the (AA)mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them 3 and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord [l]God! This is what the Lord [m]God says to the mountains, the hills, the ravines, and the valleys: “Behold, I Myself am going to bring a sword against you, and (AB)I will destroy your high places. 4 So your (AC)altars will become deserted and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will make your slain fall in front of your idols. 5 I will also lay the dead bodies of the sons of Israel in front of their idols; and I will scatter your (AD)bones around your altars. 6 [n]Everywhere you live, (AE)cities will be in ruins and the high places will be deserted, so that your altars will be in ruins and [o]deserted, your (AF)idols will be broken and brought to an end, your incense altars will be cut down, and your works wiped out. 7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the Lord.

8 “However, I will leave a (AG)remnant, in that you will have those who (AH)escaped the sword among the nations when you are scattered among the countries. 9 Then those of you who escape will (AI)remember Me among the nations to which they will be taken captive, how I have [p](AJ)been hurt by their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which committed infidelity with their idols; and they will (AK)loathe themselves in their own sight for the evils which they have committed, for all their abominations. 10 Then they will know that I am the Lord; I have not said in vain that I would inflict this disaster on them.”’

11 “This is what the Lord [q]God says: ‘Clap your hands, (AL)stamp your foot and say, “(AM)Woe, because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, which will fall by the (AN)sword, famine, and plague! 12 Anyone who is (AO)far away will die by the plague, anyone who is near will fall by the sword, and anyone who remains and is spared from these will die by the famine. So I will (AP)expend My wrath on them. 13 Then you will know that I am the Lord, when their (AQ)dead are among their idols around their altars, on (AR)every high hill, on all the tops of the mountains, under every leafy tree and under every massive oak with thick branches—the places where they offered a soothing aroma to all their idols. 14 So through all their dwelling places I will (AS)stretch out My hand against them and make the land more desolate and waste than the wilderness toward Diblah; so they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Punishment for Wickedness Foretold

7 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “And you, son of man, this is what the Lord [r]God says to the land of Israel: ‘An (AT)end! The end is coming on the four corners of the land. 3 Now the end is upon you, for I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and [s]bring all your abominations upon you. 4 And My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you, but I will [t](AU)bring your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will (AV)know that I am the Lord!’

5 “This is what the Lord [u]God says: ‘A (AW)disaster, a unique disaster, behold, it is coming! 6 An end [v]is coming; the end has come! It has (AX)awakened against you; behold, it has come! 7 Your [w]doom has come to you, you inhabitant of the land. The (AY)time has come, the (AZ)day is near—panic rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. 8 Now I will shortly (BA)pour out My wrath on you and expend My anger against you; I will (BB)judge you according to your ways and [x]bring on you all your abominations. 9 My eye will have no pity nor will I spare you. I will [y]repay you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst; then you will know that I, the Lord, am striking.

10 ‘Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your [z]doom has gone forth; the (BC)rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed. 11 Violence [aa]has grown into a rod of (BD)wickedness. None of them shall remain, none of their [ab]people, none of their (BE)wealth, nor anything eminent among them. 12 The (BF)time has come, the day has arrived. Let neither the (BG)buyer rejoice nor the seller mourn; for (BH)wrath is against all their multitude. 13 Indeed, the seller will not [ac](BI)regain [ad]what he sold as long as [ae]they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not [af]be averted, nor will any of them maintain his life by his wrongdoing.

14 ‘They have (BJ)blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all [ag]their multitude. 15 The (BK)sword is outside the city and the plague and the famine are within. Anyone who is in the field will die by the sword, while famine and the plague will consume those in the city. 16 Even when their survivors (BL)escape, they will be on the mountains like (BM)doves of the valleys, all of them (BN)moaning, each over his own wrongdoing. 17 All (BO)hands will hang limp, and all [ah]knees will drip with water. 18 They will (BP)put on sackcloth and (BQ)shuddering will overwhelm them; and shame will be on all faces, and a [ai](BR)bald patch on all their heads. 19 They will (BS)fling their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an abhorrent thing; their (BT)silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their [aj]appetite, nor can they fill their stomachs, because their wrongdoing has become a cause of stumbling.

The Temple Profaned

20 Moreover, they transformed the splendor of His jewels into pride, and (BU)they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an abhorrent thing to them. 21 And I will hand it over to the (BV)foreigners as plunder, and to the wicked of the earth as spoils; and they will profane it. 22 I will also turn My (BW)face away from them, and they will profane My treasure; then robbers will enter and profane it.

23 ‘(BX)Make the [ak]chain, for the land is full of [al](BY)bloody crimes, and the city is (BZ)full of violence. 24 Therefore, I will bring the worst of the (CA)nations, and they will take possession of their houses. I will also put an end to the (CB)pride of the strong ones, and their (CC)holy places will be profaned. 25 When anguish comes, they will seek (CD)peace, but there will be none. 26 (CE)Disaster will come upon disaster and (CF)rumor will be added to rumor; then they will seek a (CG)vision from a prophet, but the (CH)Law will be lost from the priest, and (CI)counsel from the elders. 27 The king will mourn, the prince will be (CJ)clothed in horror, and the hands of the people of the land will [am]tremble. I will deal with them because of their conduct, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Vision of Abominations in Jerusalem

8 Now it came about in the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, as I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah sitting before me, that the hand of the Lord [an]God fell upon me there. 2 Then I looked, and behold, something like the appearance of [ao]a man; from His waist and downward there was the (CK)appearance of fire, and from His waist and upward like the appearance of a glow, like (CL)gleaming [ap]metal. 3 And He extended the form of a hand and took me by the hair of my head; and the (CM)Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the [aq]north gate of the inner courtyard, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which (CN)provokes to jealousy, was located. 4 And behold, the (CO)glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance which I saw in the plain.

5 Then He said to me, “Son of man, (CP)raise your eyes now toward the north.” So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this (CQ)idol of jealousy at the entrance. 6 And He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great (CR)abominations which the house of Israel are committing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations!”

7 Then He brought me to the entrance of the courtyard, and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall. 8 And He said to me, “Son of man, now (CS)dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and behold, an entrance. 9 Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations that they are committing here.” 10 So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of crawling things and animals and detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around. 11 And standing in front of them were (CT)seventy (CU)elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, each man with his (CV)censer in his hand; and the fragrance of the cloud of incense was rising. 12 Then He said to me, “Do you see, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the rooms of his carved images? For they say, ‘(CW)The Lord does not see us; the Lord has (CX)abandoned the land.’” 13 And He said to me, “Yet you will see still greater abominations which they are committing!”

14 Then He brought me to the entrance of the (CY)gate of the Lord’s house which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for [ar]Tammuz. 15 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Yet you will see still greater abominations than these!”

16 Then He brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lord’s house. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their (CZ)backs to the temple of the Lord while their faces were toward the east; and (DA)they were [as]prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun. 17 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it a trivial thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have committed here, that they have (DB)filled the land with violence and (DC)provoked Me to anger repeatedly? Yet behold, they are [at]putting the twig to their nose! 18 Therefore, I indeed will deal in wrath. My eye will have no pity nor will I spare; and (DD)though they cry out in My ears with a loud voice, yet I will not listen to them.”

The Vision of Slaughter

9 Then He cried out in my [au]presence with a loud (DE)voice, saying, “Come forward, you [av]executioners of the city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand.” 2 And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his smashing weapon in his hand; and among them was (DF)one man clothed in linen with a scribe’s kit at his waist. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

3 Then the (DG)glory of the God of Israel ascended from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the [aw]temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose waist was the scribe’s kit. 4 And the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and make a (DH)mark on the foreheads of the people who (DI)groan and sigh over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.” 5 But to the others He said in my [ax]presence, “Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity and do not spare. 6 [ay]Utterly (DJ)kill old men, young men, female virgins, little children, and women, but do not (DK)touch any person on whom is the mark; and you shall (DL)start from My sanctuary.” So they started with the [az]elders who were before the [ba]temple. 7 He also said to them, “(DM)Defile the [bb]temple and fill the courtyards with the dead. Go out!” So they went out and struck and killed the people in the city. 8 And as they were striking the people and I alone was left, I (DN)fell on my face and cried out, [bc]saying, “(DO)Oh, Lord [bd]God! Are You going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel [be]by pouring out Your wrath on Jerusalem?”

9 Then He said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is very, very great, and the land is (DP)filled with blood, and the city is (DQ)full of perversion; for (DR)they say, ‘The Lord has abandoned the land, and the Lord does not see!’ 10 But as for Me, (DS)My eye will have no pity nor will I spare, but (DT)I will bring their conduct upon their heads.”

11 Then behold, the man clothed in linen, at whose waist was the scribe’s kit, [bf]reported, saying, “I have done just as You have commanded me.”
