Now this man would go up from his city (A)yearly (B)to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of armies in (C)Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the Lord there.

Hoshea Reigns over Israel

17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, (A)Hoshea the son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned for nine years. He did evil in the sight of the Lord, only not as the kings of Israel who preceded him. (B)Shalmaneser the king of Assyria marched (C)against him, and Hoshea became his servant and paid him tribute. But the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea, who had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and had then brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year; so the king of Assyria arrested him and confined him in prison.

Then the king of Assyria invaded the entire land, and went up to (D)Samaria and besieged it for three years.

Israel Captive

In the ninth year of Hoshea, (E)the king of Assyria captured Samaria and (F)led the people of Israel into exile to Assyria, and (G)settled them in Halah and Habor, on the river of (H)Gozan, and (I)in the cities of the Medes.

Why Israel Fell

Now (J)this came about because the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, (K)who had brought them up from the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; (L)and they had [a]feared other gods. They also [b](M)followed the [c]customs of the nations whom the Lord had driven out from the sons of Israel, and in the customs (N)of the kings of Israel which they had [d]introduced. And the sons of Israel [e]did things secretly against the Lord their God which were not right. Moreover, they built for themselves high places in all their towns, from (O)watchtower to fortified city. 10 And (P)they set up for themselves memorial stones and [f](Q)Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11 and there they burned incense on all the high places as the nations did that the Lord had taken into exile before them; and they did evil things, provoking the Lord. 12 They served idols, (R)concerning which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this thing.” 13 Yet the (S)Lord warned Israel and Judah [g](T)through all His prophets and (U)every seer, saying, “(V)Turn back from your evil ways and keep My commandments and My statutes in accordance with all the Law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you [h]through My servants the prophets.” 14 However, they did not listen, but (W)stiffened their neck [i]like their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15 (X)They rejected His statutes and (Y)His covenant which He made with their fathers, and His warnings which He [j]gave them. And (Z)they followed [k]idols and (AA)became empty, and followed the nations that surrounded them, about which the (AB)Lord had commanded them not to do as they did. 16 And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God and made for themselves cast metal images: (AC)two calves. And they (AD)made an [l]Asherah, and (AE)worshiped all the heavenly [m]lights, and (AF)served Baal. 17 Then (AG)they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and they (AH)practiced divination and interpreting omens, and (AI)gave themselves over to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him. 18 So the Lord was very angry with Israel, and He (AJ)removed them from His [n]sight; (AK)no one was left except the tribe of Judah.

19 (AL)Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God either, but they [o](AM)followed the [p]customs [q]which Israel had [r]introduced. 20 So the Lord rejected all the [s]descendants of Israel and afflicted them and (AN)handed them over to plunderers, until He had cast them [t]out of His sight.

21 When (AO)He had torn Israel from the house of David, (AP)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then (AQ)Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and misled them into a great sin. 22 And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he committed; they did not desist from them 23 (AR)until the Lord removed Israel from His sight, (AS)just as He had spoken through all His servants the prophets. (AT)So Israel went into exile from their own land to Assyria until this day.

Cities of Israel Filled with Strangers

24 (AU)Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, [u](AV)Avva, (AW)Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the sons of Israel. So they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities. 25 And at the beginning of their living there, they (AX)did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them that were killing some of them. 26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have taken into exile and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the custom of the God of the land; so He has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them because they do not know the custom of the God of the land.”

27 Then the king of Assyria issued commands, saying, “Take one of the priests there whom you led into [v]exile, and have [w]him go and live there; and have him teach them the custom of the God of the land.” 28 So one of the priests whom they had led into exile from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they were to fear the Lord.

29 But every nation was still making gods of its own, and they put them (AY)in the houses of the high places which the people of Samaria had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived. 30 (AZ)The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and (BA)the Sepharvites were burning their children in the fire to (BB)Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of (BC)Sepharvaim. 32 (BD)They also feared the Lord and [x](BE)appointed from their entire population priests of the high places, who acted for them in the houses of the high places. 33 They feared the Lord, yet they were serving their own gods in accordance with the custom of the nations from among whom they had been taken into exile.

34 To this day they act in accordance with the earlier customs: they do not fear the Lord, nor do they [y]follow their statutes, their ordinances, the Law, or the commandments which the Lord commanded the sons of Jacob, (BF)whom He named Israel. 35 The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them, saying, “(BG)You shall not fear other gods, nor (BH)bow down to them, nor (BI)serve them, nor sacrifice to them. 36 But the Lord, (BJ)who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and with (BK)an outstretched arm, (BL)Him you shall fear, and to Him you shall bow down, and to Him you shall sacrifice. 37 And the statutes, the ordinances, the Law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, (BM)you shall take care to do always; and you shall not fear other gods. 38 The covenant that I have made with you, (BN)you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. 39 But you shall fear the Lord your God; and He will save you from the hand of all your enemies.” 40 However, they did not listen, but they kept acting in accordance with their earlier custom. 41 (BO)So while these nations feared the Lord, they also served their [z]idols; their children likewise and their grandchildren, just as their fathers did, they do to this day.

Vision of the Angel with the Gospel

And I saw another angel flying in (A)midheaven with (B)an eternal gospel to preach to (C)those who [a]live on the earth, and to (D)every nation, tribe, language, and people; and he said with a loud voice, “(E)Fear God and (F)give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who (G)made the heaven and the earth, and sea and (H)springs of waters.”

And another angel, a second one, followed, saying, “[b](I)Fallen, fallen is (J)Babylon the great, she who has (K)made all the nations drink of the (L)wine of the [c]passion of her sexual immorality.”

Doom for Worshipers of the Beast

Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone (M)worships the beast and his (N)image, and receives a (O)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the (P)wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed [d]in full strength (Q)in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with (R)fire and [e]brimstone in the presence of the (S)holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the (T)smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; (U)they have no rest day and night, those who (V)worship the beast and his (W)image, and [f]whoever receives the (X)mark of his name.” 12 Here is (Y)the [g]perseverance of the [h]saints who (Z)keep the commandments of God and [i](AA)their faith in Jesus.

The Doom of Babylon

17 (A)Then one of the (B)seven angels who had the (C)seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you (D)the judgment of the (E)great prostitute who (F)sits on many waters, with whom (G)the kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and (H)those who live on the earth (I)became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.” And (J)he carried me away [a](K)in the Spirit (L)into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a (M)scarlet beast, full of (N)blasphemous names, having (O)seven heads and ten horns. The woman (P)was clothed in purple and scarlet, and [b]adorned with gold, precious [c]stones, and pearls, holding in her hand (Q)a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her sexual immorality, and on her forehead a name was written, [d]a (R)mystery: “(S)BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF (T)THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” And I saw the woman drunk with (U)the blood of the [e]saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered [f]greatly. And the angel said to me, “Why [g]do you wonder? I will tell you the (V)mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the (W)seven heads and the ten horns.

(X)The beast that you saw (Y)was, and is not, and is about to (Z)come up out of the (AA)abyss and [h](AB)go to destruction. And (AC)those who live on the earth, (AD)whose names have not been written in the book of life (AE)from the foundation of the world, will (AF)wonder when they see the beast, that he was, and is not, and will [i]come. (AG)Here is the mind which has wisdom. The (AH)seven heads are seven mountains upon which the woman sits, 10 and they are seven (AI)kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. 11 The beast which (AJ)was, and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he (AK)goes to destruction. 12 The (AL)ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast (AM)for one hour. 13 These have (AN)one [j]purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

Victory for the Lamb

14 These will wage (AO)war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will (AP)overcome them because He is (AQ)Lord of lords and (AR)King of kings; and (AS)those who are with Him are the (AT)called and chosen and faithful.”

15 And he *said to me, “The (AU)waters which you saw where the prostitute sits are (AV)peoples and multitudes, and nations and languages. 16 And the (AW)ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her (AX)desolate and (AY)naked, and will (AZ)eat her flesh and will (BA)burn her up with fire. 17 For (BB)God has put it in their hearts to execute His [k]purpose [l]by (BC)having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the (BD)words of God will be fulfilled. 18 The woman whom you saw is (BE)the great city, which [m]reigns over the kings of the earth.”

Babylon Is Fallen

18 After these things I saw another (BF)angel (BG)coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was (BH)illuminated from his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “[n](BI)Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She (BJ)has become a dwelling place of demons and a [o]prison of every (BK)unclean spirit, and a [p]prison of every unclean and hateful bird. For all the nations have fallen because of the (BL)wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and (BM)the kings of the earth have committed acts of sexual immorality with her, and the (BN)merchants of the earth have become rich from the [q]excessive wealth of her [r](BO)luxury.”

I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “(BP)Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive any of her plagues; for her sins have [s](BQ)piled up as high as heaven, and God has (BR)remembered her offenses. (BS)Pay her back even as she has paid, and [t]give back to her double according to her deeds; in the (BT)cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. (BU)To the extent that she glorified herself and (BV)lived luxuriously, to the same extent give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘(BW)I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ For this reason (BX)in one day her plagues will come, [u]plague and mourning and famine, and she will be (BY)burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her (BZ)is strong.

Grief over Babylon

“And (CA)the kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and (CB)lived luxuriously with her, will (CC)weep and mourn over her when they (CD)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (CE)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(CF)Woe, woe, (CG)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (CH)one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the (CI)merchants of the earth (CJ)weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more— 12 cargo of (CK)gold, silver, precious [v]stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, [w]bronze, iron, and marble; 13 cinnamon, [x]spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, [y]slaves, and (CL)human lives. 14 The fruit [z]you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them. 15 The (CM)merchants of (CN)these things, who became rich from her, will (CO)stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘(CP)Woe, woe, (CQ)the great city, she who (CR)was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and [aa]adorned with gold, precious [ab]stones, and pearls; 17 for in (CS)one hour such great wealth has been laid (CT)waste!’ And (CU)every shipmaster and every [ac]passenger and sailor, and all who [ad]make their living by the sea, (CV)stood at a distance, 18 and were (CW)crying out as they (CX)saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘(CY)What city is like (CZ)the great city?’ 19 And they threw (DA)dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘(DB)Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea (DC)became rich from her prosperity, for in (DD)one hour she has been laid (DE)waste!’ 20 (DF)Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [ae]saints and (DG)apostles and prophets, because (DH)God has [af]pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then [ag]a (DI)strong angel (DJ)picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, (DK)the great city, be thrown down with violence, and (DL)will never be found again. 22 And (DM)the sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again; and no craftsman of any craft will ever be found in you again; and the (DN)sound of a mill will never be heard in you again; 23 and the light of a lamp will never shine in you again; and the (DO)voice of the groom and bride will never be heard in you again; for your (DP)merchants were the powerful people of the earth, because all the nations were deceived (DQ)by your witchcraft. 24 And in her was found the (DR)blood of prophets and of [ah]saints, and of (DS)all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”

The Fourfold Hallelujah

19 After these things I heard something like a (DT)loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

(DU)Hallelujah! (DV)Salvation, (DW)glory, and power belong to our God, (DX)because His (DY)judgments are (DZ)true and righteous; for He has judged the (EA)great prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her sexual immorality, and He has (EB)avenged the blood of His bond-servants [ai]on her.” And a second time they said, “(EC)Hallelujah! (ED)Her smoke rises forever and ever.” And the (EE)twenty-four elders and the (EF)four living creatures (EG)fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying, “(EH)Amen. (EI)Hallelujah!” And a voice came from the throne, saying,

(EJ)Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, (EK)you who fear Him, the small and the great.” Then I heard something like (EL)the voice of a great multitude and like (EM)the sound of many waters, and like the (EN)sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,

(EO)Hallelujah! For the (EP)Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.
