  33. Love the Lord Your God

    These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
  34. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
  35. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
  36. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
  37. If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.
  38. He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land—your grain, new wine and olive oil—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.
  39. Fear the Lord

    And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
  40. Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.
  41. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.
  42. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.
  43. Love and Obey the Lord

    Love the Lord your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.

  445. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
  446. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
  447. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

  449. Love for Enemies

    “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
  450. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
  451. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
  452. because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
  453. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
  454. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

  456. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
  457. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
  458. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
  459. The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.
  460. “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’
  461. “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
  462. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
  463. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
  464. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

  474. Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

    It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
  475. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
  476. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
  477. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
  478. Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

    “If you love me, keep my commands.
  479. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
  480. Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
  481. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

  485. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
  486. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
  487. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
  488. This is my command: Love each other.
  489. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
  490. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
  491. I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
  492. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

  496. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
  497. Jesus Reinstates Peter

    When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
  498. Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
  499. The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
  500. Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)
