The phrase goes back to Deut. 26:18, 19, where Israel as the Lord’s special people is privileged to represent Him and be the tangible means whereby praise, honor, and glory are given to the Lord (cf. Is. 43:7; Jer. 13:11; 33:9). Paul sees the church in this role (Titus 2:14), as does Peter (1 Pet. 2:9–12).
