4:1–25 Paul confirms his argument that justification is by grace through faith in Christ (3:22–25) by an appeal to the life of Abraham. As spiritual father of the Jews (v. 1), Abraham provides a test case for Paul’s doctrine. If he can show that Abraham was justified by faith, his earlier exposition becomes irrefutable in a Jewish context.
