Rom 11:5

11:5 a remnant, chosen by grace. In Elijah’s time there was wholesale apostasy, and yet the presence of a remnant of the faithful indicated that God had not fully and finally rejected His people. Paul’s thinking about the remnant is rooted in the teaching of Isaiah, whose son Shear-jashub’s name means “a remnant shall return” (Is. 7:3 and text note; cf. 9:27; Is. 1:9; 6:13; 10:20–22; 11:11–16).
